Head Coach

Larry Reynolds, who has coached Division I and II championship teams at Long Beach State and Cal State San Bernardino, became the head coach of the men’s basketball program at California State University, Stanislaus, in June of 2009.

In his first season at Cal State Stanislaus, he helped the team to 10 wins for the first time since 2006-07 with a 10-17 overall record. Then in 2010-11, he guided the Warriors to their first appearance in the CCAA Tournament and posted 12-15 overall and 10-12 conference records.

Reynolds compiled an impressive record as a head coach for 10 seasons after a number of years as an assistant coach at UC Riverside and the University of San Francisco.

In five seasons at Long Beach State, he directed his teams to consecutive post-season playoff appearances from 2004-05 to 2006-07,

including a Big West Conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in his final year. Long Beach State rolled to a 24-8 record in 2006-07, and he was named Big West Conference Coach of the Year.

At Division II Cal State San Bernardino, Reynolds’ teams rolled up a dazzling 110-35 record over five seasons and made four consecutive NCAA West Regional appearances. His clubs won three CCAA championships (1999-2002), two West Region titles, and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight twice.

At Cal State San Bernardino, after a 12-15 first season, Reynolds turned the program around to post a 23-8 season in 1998-99 and won the West Region in 1999. The team advanced as far as the NCAA Championship quarterfinals.

CSUSB advanced to the 2001 West Regional title game and posted a 24-4 record that season. The following year, in 2002, Reynolds again led the Coyotes to an impressive 28-2 overall record before falling in the NCAA Championship quarterfinal game.

Reynolds was named CCAA Conference Coach of the Year four times and National Association of Basketball Coaches District Eight Coach of the Year in 1998-99.

From 1979 to 1995, Reynolds was an associate head coach at UC Riverside with John Masi. UCR won eight CCAA titles and made the NCAA tournament 10 times, including three Elite Eight appearances. In 1994, UCR advanced to the national championship game. During the 1995-96 and 96-97 seasons, Reynolds served as an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco.

Reynolds played at UC Riverside where he was a conference most valuable player in basketball. He graduated from UCR with a degree in urban studies in 1976 and earned his master’s degree in education from Azusa Pacific in 1993.

Coaching Staff

Ben Riley has been on the Cal State Stanislaus men’s bas-ketball coaching staff since 2009. Riley brought a wealth of experience to the Warriors as both a coach and a player.

Riley comes to CSUS after four years as head coach of the Lassen Community College men’s basketball squad. Riley led the team to a conference championship in 2007-08 and was named conference coach of the year for his and the team’s efforts. While at Lassen CC, Riley served for two years on the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches As-sociation executive board as the Golden Valley Conference representative.

Riley worked locally for three years as an assistant coach at Modesto Junior College from 2002 to 2005. Before that, Riley was a graduate assistant at University of Pacific to former Cal State Stanislaus head coach Bob Thomason, who has led the Pacific Tigers to multiple NCAA Division I Tournament appearances, Big West Conference championships, and has been named Big West Conference Coach of the Year on five occasions.

Riley had a prolific playing career as a high-scoring shooter at Mendocino College in Ukiah, and at NAIA-member College of Idaho. He led his College of Idaho team to a total of 48 wins in two years and an appearance in the NAIA National Championship Tournament. Riley set the single-season school record for 3-pointers by hitting 106 shots from behind the arc. At Mendocino College, Riley led all California community colleges with 27.3 points per game as a sophomore and set single season records in scoring with 763 points and in free-throws by making a 168.

Riley graduated from the University of Pacific in 2003 with a master’s degree in sports sciences. He received his bachelor’s degree in sports management from the College of Idaho in 2000.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the na-tion’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and wom-en’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volley-ball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 151 NCAA Championships (102 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II con-ference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). CCAA institutions have been very

successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, 10 softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 18 more in four other sports. Last year, UC San Diego won the softball championship and Cal State Monterey Bay captured the men’s golf national title. Kyle Sousa of Chico State also won an individual national championship in men’s golf. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference mem-bership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 60 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine , UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern Cali-fornia to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 15th year as the Commissioner.

A top-rated institution recognized for academic excellence, outstanding graduation rates, commitment to diversity, and championship athlet-ics, CSU Stanislaus was named one of “The Top Public Universities–Master’s” institutions in the West by U.S. News & World Report, one of the “Best 373 Colleges” in the nation by The Princeton Review as well as one of 120 “Best Value Colleges.”

Our unique way of thinking about education shows up in everything we do—from the one-on-one mentoring relationships students enjoy with faculty and staff to the renowned small class sizes we offer. It’s who we are. It’s one reason why so many of our alumni enjoy success beyond college. And it’s also why nearly 9,000 students continue to expand their intellectual, creative, and social horizons while seeking their degrees from CSU Stanislaus.

We are learning-centeredAt CSU Stanislaus, we believe in an open marketplace of fresh ideas where voices and opinions are freely exchanged both inside and outside the classroom. Our faculty members are professional educators who have built their careers on creating an ideal environment for learning. As experts in their fields, many are involved in active research projects that bring cutting-edge theories and practices straight into the class-room community.

Rigorous programsAt CSU Stanislaus, students are introduced to a wide range of quality pro-grams that will challenge minds, inspire hearts, and actually qualify stu-dents for something that fits their ambitions. We offer more than 1,000 courses all told in our six distinct colleges. We also offer 40 undergraduate programs, 29 graduate majors, five graduate certificate programs, and a host of teaching credentials.

Honors programAdvanced students discover their potential in our Honors Program, de-signed for students of unusual curiosity, energy, and academic capability representing all disciplines. Honor students take upper-level coursework central to their major or discipline and participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities and excursions culminating in a senior-year Capstone projects.

location. location. location.Situated in a park-like setting that is unique in the CSU system, new students are immedi-ately drawn to CSU Stanislaus by its tranquil and picturesque environment — the perfect backdrop for focused, serious study. We have 228 acres of lawns, bridges, waterfalls, and ponds that will make students feel as though they are walking through a private park on their way to class. Our campus is considered one of the most beautiful—and safest—public campuses in all of California, where nature coexists in harmony with the pleasing archi-tectural style of our buildings. Looking beyond the natural beauty, students find modern computer and research labs, a technologically enhanced library, and our latest addition, the Nora and Hashem Naraghi Hall of Science.

Fun is all around usTurlock is nestled between the awe-inspir-ing Sierra Nevada and the greater Bay Area in the rapidly developing Central Valley. The campus is only two hours away from San Francisco, Berkeley, Marin, and Palo Alto — the home of Silicon Valley. Moun-tain climbing, sailing, and water sports are nearby to enjoy.

CSU Stanislaus is only a short distance from Yosemite National Park, Monterey Bay, and Lake Tahoe—great for outdoor weekends,

holidays, and spring break. Sacramento, the seat of state government and the home of Old Town with its New Orleans vibe, is just an hour or so north.

CSU Stanislaus has again been recognized as one of the country’s best institutions for undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review. For the sixth consecutive year, CSU Stanislaus is featured in the 2012 edi-tion of the prestigious college guide “The Best 376 Colleges.” CSU Stanislaus is one of only two California State University campuses to receive this honor, and the only one to receive the recognition for six-straight years. Additionally, The Princeton Review recognized CSU Stanislaus as one of the best colleges in the West in its website feature, “2012 Best Colleges: Region by Region,” posted August 1, 2011, on www.PrincetonReview.com. Col-lectively, schools on the regions’ best lists represent just 25 percent of four-year colleges in the U.S.

Student lifeThere’s more to college than attending class, study-ing, or bubbling in answers on Scantron forms. At CSU Stanislaus , people experience a campus culture that fosters strong relationships between students, faculty, and administrators. Students make lifelong friends with their classmates, association and club members, fraternity brothers, and sorority sisters. Students become part of a vibrant campus life, where activities are plentiful. With close to 100 active student organi-zations and more than 9,000 potential friends at CSU Stanislaus, there is a niche for everyone.

Call us homeFor many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occupancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they

want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International educationCSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so students can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty factsCSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial AidWe don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students gradu-ate with a debt load substantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

InternshipsExperience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, businesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

President’s Message

Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics.

I am delighted to welcome you to California State University, Stanislaus and another year of War-rior Athletics.

Once again, the success of our student athletes on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the university’s reputation for excellence and its sixth-straight annual recognition in the Princ-

eton Review’s listing of Best Colleges in the United States. CSU Stanislaus is very proud to be the only CSU campus to receive this honor for six consecutive years.

In 2010-11, we had the pleasure of hosting three major championships: the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, the CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) soccer cham-pionships and the Track & Field conference championships. CSU Stanislaus is truly honored to have hosted these events and welcomed thousands of student-athletes and families from around the country to our campus.

Our Warrior Athletics teams and student-athletes continue to rank highly in the state and country. Our women’s soccer team re-cently participated in the CCAA championship tournament. In addition, two of our student athletes qualified for the NCAA track nationals, and seven were honored as NCAA All Americans.

However, Warrior success is not limited to athletics competitions—our student athletes also continue to realize success in their academic pursuits. Thirty-five student athletes had a grade point average (GPA) of 3.4 or higher, one of the strongest academic showings in the CCAA.

Thank you again for your interest in Warrior Athletics. I encourage you to visit our beautiful campus and encourage our fine athletes by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our teams.

Go Warriors!

Student Health Center The Student Health Center, with basic medi-cal procedures, health care and pharmacy, is available and are free to all students. Some Health Center proce-dures require a nominal fee for service generally at a rate much lower than at any outside facility. The Student Health Center should be utilized for all appropri-ate care during normal operating hours. The The Student Health Center does not have X-ray capability so specialized radiographic studies are performed off-campus. Standard x-rays in support of basic illness/injury service are provided free of charge to all students. More specialized x-ray studies – MRI, CT scans are at the students’ own expense or can be billed to students’ insurance as applicable. Athletic injuries beyond the scope of the athletic trainer are referred to the Student Health Center where they are further evaluated by a physician or family nurse practitioner. The Health Center is located just across the Warrior Lake bridge connecting the Athletics and Physical Education facilities to the rest of the campus. nCAA CHAMpS/life Skills

California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics became a member of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program in 2007-08. The mission of the NCAA is to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the campus educational program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. With this in mind, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program was created to support the student-athlete development initiatives of NCAA member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the context of higher education. In the process of achieving this mission, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program will: • Promote student-athletes’ ownership of their academic, athletic, career, personal and community responsibilities. • Meet the changing needs of student-athletes. • Promote respect for diversity and inclusion among student-athletes. • Assist student-athletes in identifying and applying transferable skills. • Enhance partnerships between the NCAA, member institutions and their com-munities for the purpose of education. • Foster an environment that encourages student-athletes to effectively access campus resources. • Encourage the development of character, integrity and leadership skills.

Participating institutions in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program are provided with instructional materials and supplemental resources which support a student-athlete’s development in five areas: academics, athletics, personal development, career develop-ment and community service.

Academic Advising & Support

The number one goal for the Intercollegiate Athletics program at California State University Stanislaus is that our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Admissions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direction of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Interim Director of Retention and Advising Fernando Beltran, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, determination and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligi-bility and most importantly, direct interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. Success in the classroom for student-athletes is a top priority for Warrior Athletics. Our department consis-

tently earns a 3.0 cu-mulative grade point average. Warrior student-athletes also achieve NCAA and CCAA Academic All American Awards, with more than 200 students earning Academic All-CCAA honors since 2006-07 (35 in 2010-11). Student athletes are strongly encouraged to visit both the Athletic Advisor and their chosen major department advisor/faculty each semester before registering for classes. The Advising Resource Center is located in Mary Stuart Rogers (MSR) 180, and ap-pointments can be made by calling (209) 667-3304. Leon Graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.A. in Psychology in 2001, obtained her M.A. in Educational Counseling and Student Services in 2002, and is currently enrolled as part of the first cohort of the Ed.D. program at CSU Stanislaus.

Research shows that students who are part of a learning community and a FYE program do better in their classes, are more active on campus, make friends more easily, and get to know faculty more personally than students who do not join such a program. The FYE program provides these benefits for you.

In the First Year Experience Program, you have the opportunity to join a learning community with other new students. The arena on the campus of California State University Stanislaus is home to the Warriors’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, the women’s volleyball team, department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as the Department of Kinesiology. On the first day of basketball practices for the 2010-11 season, new letters were installed on the building, renaming the gym to Ed & Bertha Fitz-patrick Arena. The arena was renamed for Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick, owners of Valley Lexus/Valley BMW in Modesto and other car dealerships in the Bay Area. The Fitzpatricks contributed $500,000 to the University in 2009. As a result, the California State University Board of Trustees has approved, at the recommendation of University President Ham Shirvani, that the campus’ Warrior Arena be renamed the Ed & Bertha Fitzpat-rick Arena. In 1999, the gymnasium took on the name Warrior Arena, 21 years after it was built on the east side of the campus. Fitzpatrick Arena has become one of the toughest places to play in the conference and is noted for its atmosphere and vocal fan support. Also in the Fall of 2009, the walk-way leading up to the Arena was named Hanny Way, in honor of Jim Hanny, who had been involved with CSU Stanislaus athletics since 1966. In 42 years of service at CSU Stanislaus, Hanny has served as the athletics director, chairman of physical education, coached basketball, golf, track & field, cross country and baseball. Hanny led the Warriors to 12 national championships and is a member of five different Athletics Halls of Fame. Adjacent to the Field House, which is home to physical education pro-fessors’ offices and the Warrior Fitness Center, is a full-size swimming pool. With the addition of the new Student Recreation Center, Warrior student-athletes have gain better access to the Fitness Center.

SRC & Athletics Facilities

The Student Recreation Complex at California State University Stan-islaus opened in August of 2009 prior to the start of the soccer season after students overwhelmingly approved a referendum to fund the construction of a student recreation complex in the spring of 2007.

The complex, located on the east side of campus at the corner of Geer Road and Christoffersen Parkway, features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art all-weather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project.

The Associated Students, Inc., University Student Union Board of Di-rectors and Student Athletic Advisory Committee leadership were involved in the planning for the project. A student oversight committee provided a voice in operation of the facilities.

The addition of a lighted intramural field provides CSU Stanislaus with its first dedicated facility for that program. Participation in intramurals has increased dramatically with the University’s steady enrollment growth and improved student-generated recreation programs.

In its first year, Warrior Stadium hosted the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships. The facility is schedule to host three major championships in 2010-11: the CCAA Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships, CCAA Track & Field Championships and

Welcome!

As Mayor of the City of Turlock, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to the campus of California State University Stanislaus for today’s home game.

Cal State Stanislaus continues to set the bar for excellence in academics and athletics. For 54 years War-rior Athletics has brought great pride to the City of Turlock, Cal State Stanislaus and the Central Valley.

President Shirvani, the Turlock Chamber of Commerce/ Convention and Visitors Bureau, City Council and I have been working hard to enhance the relationship between the City of Turlock and California State University Stanislaus. Warrior Athletics is a key part of our strategy to make Turlock a true college town.

As a graduate of Cal State Stanislaus (1981), I thank you on behalf of our student-athletes, coaches, administrative staff, alumni and friends of the University for attending today’s home contest. By purchasing a ticket to a home contest or special event and by joining the Warrior Athletic Club through a tax deductible donation to Warrior Athletics you are helping us provide the necessary additional financial resources to allow our student-athletes to succeed in the class room, court, field, diamond and track.

On behalf of our the student-athletes, coaches and staff I want again personally thank you for your support of Cal State Stanislaus.
