2011-12 BOISE STATE WRESTLINGThe Bronco wrestling team will have the advantage of home floor as Boise State hosts the 2012 Pacific-12 Conference Wrestling Championships at Taco Bell Arena. This year’s tournament is scheduled for Feb. 26 (Sunday), 2011.

Last season, Boise State captured the sixth Pac-10 Conference team title in program history thanks to four individual champions and two runner-up finishes in the seven-team tournament held at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore. The Broncos finished with 140 team points, holding off Oregon State which tallied 137.5. Boise State also won Pac-10 crowns in 2000, 2002 and 2004, 2008 and 2009 and has finished either first or second as a team in 10 of the past 12 tournaments. The Broncos finished runner-up in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2010.

The Broncos return one of their four champions from last year’s tournament – Jason Chamberlain (149). Boise State also earned two runner-up finishes in 2011 as Levi Jones and J.T. Felix placed second at 141 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively. Felix will return for his sophomore season at Boise State in 2011-12.

The Pac-10 has expanded to the Pac-12 with the addition of Colorado and Utah, but the Pac-12 wrestling conference moved in the opposite direction, reducing its size to six teams with the loss of Cal State Fullerton’s wrestling program. Competing institutions for 2011-12 are Arizona State University in Tempe; Boise State University in Boise; Oregon State University in Corvallis; California-Poly San Luis Obispo in San Luis Obispo; California State University Bakersfield in Bakersfield and Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

The NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships heads to St. Louis, Mo., after being held in Philadelphia, Pa., last year. The three-day tournament (March 15-17, Thursday-Saturday) will be hosted at the Scottrade Center.

The NCAA will announce the number of national tournament spots allotted to the Pacific-12 Conference prior to the league championship tournament on Feb. 26. The all-time high for the Pac-12 wrestlers qualifying for the national tournament was 44 in 1997.

Boise State sent a school-record 10 student-athletes to the national tournament last season. Andrew Hochstrasser finished runner-up in the 133 pound title match while Jason Chamberlain took third in the 149 weight bracket and Adam Hall placed fifth in the 157 class. The three led the Boise State squad to its best finish at the NCAA Tournament, racking up 57.5 points which was good enough for ninth place. The Broncos have finished in the top 25 at nationals 10 of the past 13 years. Along with last year’s ninth-place finish, the other top-25 finishes include two 10th-place finishes in 1999 and 2001, an 11th place-finish in 2011, three 12th-place finishes in 2000, 2003 and 2009, a 19th-place finish in 2002 and two 24th-place finish in 2007 and 2008.

After nine years of guiding the Boise State wrestling program, Greg Randall has established himself as one of the top collegiate coaches in the country. Randall has led the Broncos to the top of the Pac-10 Conference four times, to go along with six top-25 finishes at the NCAA Championships. In his nine seasons since being

promoted to head coach, Randall’s teams have finished in the top-three at the conference tournament eight times, while taking home 23 individual Pac-10 titles. Randall’s league finishes include the 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2011 Pac-10 championships, runner-up finishes in 2003, 2005 and 2010, and a third-place finish in 2006. In 2011, Randall’s Broncos placed ninth at the NCAA Championships, the highest team finish in program history. The team had previously wrestled to an 11th-place finish in 2010, 12th-place finishes in 2003 and 2009, as well as 24th-place finishes in 2006 and 2008. Last season, the Broncos finished with a 10-3-1 record in dual meets including a 3-0-1 mark in conference matches. The 2009-10 season proved to be highly successful for Boise State once again, as the Broncos wrestled their way to a dominating 14-3 overall record. Despite going 7-0 against Pac-10 competition, however, the men would fall just two points short of securing their third consecutive Pac-10 team title. Boise State did manage to score individual conference championships at 157 pounds (Adam Hall) and 184 pounds (Kirk Smith), while also qualifying eight wrestlers to compete at the NCAA Championships. Under Randall’s guidance the Broncos continued to roll at nationals as Hall and Smith both wrestled their way to All-American honors. Smith garnered his second All-American honor with a second-place finish in the tournament. Hall, meanwhile, made his way through the

consolation bracket after a quarterfinals loss to secure a third-place finish and All-American status. The Broncos’ had an overwhelming amount of success during the 2008-09 campaign. Boise State’s season was capped with a 17-3 record, while Randall won his third Pac-10 Championship and led the Broncos to a 12th-place finish at the national tournament. Randall was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year after the Broncos shattered the conference championship scoring record with 172.5 team points. Boise State did so with six wrestlers earning individual conference titles, including: Andrew Hochstrasser (133 pounds), Jason Chamberlain (149), Tyler Sherfey (165), Nate Lee (174), Smith (184) and Brent Chriswell (197). Boise State had nine wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships, three of which (Hochstrasser, Sherfey and Chriswell) earned All-American honors with top-eight finishes in their respective weight classes. In 2007-08 Randall earned his first Pac-10 Coach of the Year award, which came in part to his team’s dominating performance at the league championships. Boise State scored the third-highest Pac-10 tournament score in history with 152.5 total points. With the win the Broncos also sent nine wrestlers on to the national

mEET ThE cOAchEStournament, which was highlighted by Kirk Smith’s eighth-place finish at 184 pounds. In 2006 Randall guided his first NCAA individual champion as a head coach with Ben Cherrington capturing the national title in the 157-pound weight class. Cherrington was the second wrestler Randall has helped to a first-place finish at the NCAA tournament. In 1999 as an assistant coach for the Broncos, Randall helped guide Kirk White to the 165-pound national title. Taking over the program following the 2001-02 season, Randall has led the Broncos to a dual match record of 98-32-1 the past eight seasons for a 75.4 winning percentage. In that time 10 of his wrestlers earned NCAA All-America honors while capturing 19 individual Pac-10 championships. Randall became just the third head wrestling coach in the past 41 years at Boise State when he was promoted to the head coaching position on April 5, 2002, following the retirement of longtime head coach Mike Young. Prior to taking over the top coaching position, Randall was known as one of the top assistants in the country, helping the Broncos to two Pac-10 championships and several top-20 finishes at the NCAA tournament during his 10 years under Young. His success as an assistant carried over in his first year at the helm of the Bronco program (2002-03) when he was named “Rookie Coach of the Year” by Amateur Wrestling News.

While the Boise State wrestling program has always been successful, it has seen unprecedented success over the past 11 seasons. During that time Boise State fans have seen some of the top team and individual performances in the program’s history with the Broncos winning five Pac-10 championships (2000, 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2009), while finishing runner-up for the league title five other years (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2010). Since Randall joined the Bronco wrestling program 19 years ago, 16 individuals have earned a total of 24 NCAA All-America awards. Current assistant coach Kirk White came away with three of those All-America awards (1999, which came en route to his national individual title, 2000 and 2001). Along with the three won by White, six other Broncos have also been multiple winners of the national honor. They are Larry Quisel (third in 1999 and second in 2000 at 157 pounds), Cash Edwards (seventh in 2000 and sixth in 2001 at 184 pounds), Ben VomBaur (fourth in 2002 and sixth in 2003 at 125 pounds), Smith (eighth in 2008 and second in 2010 at 184 pounds), Andrew Hochstrasser (fourth in 2009 and second in 2011 at 133 pounds) and Hall (third in 2010 and fifth in 2011 at 157 pounds). Broncos earning single NCAA All-America honors with Randall as an assistant or head coach include Nels Nelson (seventh in 1992 at 150 pounds), Rusty Cook (fourth in 2001 at 197 pounds), Charles Burton (third in 1996 at 167 pounds), Collin Robertson (sixth in 2003 at 149 pounds), Boe Rushton (third in 2003 at heavyweight),

mEET ThE cOAchESCherrington (first in 2005 at 157 pounds), Sherfey (eighth in 2009 at 165 pounds), Chriswell (sixth in 2009 at 197 pounds) and Jason Chamberlain (third in 2011 at 149 pounds). Burton went on to become Boise State’s first student-athlete to become a member of a United States Olympic team. The native of Meridian, Idaho, represented the United States at 2000 Sydney Games competing in the freestyle division, where he placed fifth in the 87-kilogram (187.25-pound) weight class. As a team at the NCAA Tournament, Boise State has finished among the top 25 teams 10 of the past 13 years. Along with their ninth-place finish in 2011, the Broncos also finished 11th in 2010, 12th in 2009, 24th in 2008, 24th in 2006, 12th in 2003, tied for 19th in 2002, 10th in 2001, 12th in 2000 and 10th in 1999. A 1987 graduate of the University of Iowa, Randall was a three-time NCAA All-American for legendary coach Dan Gable. In 2003 Randall had the honor to serve as an assistant to Gable for the U.S. World Cup wrestling team. Randall wrestled in the 134-pound weight class at Iowa, helping the Hawkeyes to four NCAA national championships. He was a three-time All-American, finishing runner-up for the national championship in

1984 and 1986. As a junior in 1985 he placed fifth at the national tournament. Randall was a Big 10 Conference champion in 1985 and received the award for the “Most Falls in the Least of Amount of Time”. In 1985, 1986 and 1987 he was selected as a participant for the East-West All-Star Wrestling Classic. Following his 1987 season Randall received Iowa’s McGivern Award, which is presented each year to the team’s most courageous wrestler. Competing at the international level in 1989, Randall captured the gold medal for his weight class at the Pan American Games. He has also been a runner-up at the U.S. Open Nationals and placed second at the 1989 U.S. Olympic Festival. A four-time state high school champion in Iowa during his prep career, Randall was inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame located at the Wrestling Institute in Newton, Iowa, in March of 2002, and in the state of Iowa High School Hall of Fame in 1995. He is also a two-time junior national champion. Prior to joining the Bronco coaching staff, Randall was an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota. Randall, and his wife Chris, have three children – Rylee (15), Shea (14) and Brittlyn (9).

Assistant Coach - 16th Season Entering his 16th year as an assistant coach at Boise State, Chris Owens has played an instrumental role in the Bronco’s recent wrestling success. During that time Owens has helped Boise State to several individual and team championships as the Broncos continue to boast one of the top wrestling programs in the country.

He is also playing a key role in the future success of the team, helping sign some of the nation’s top high school wrestlers to national letters of intent at Boise State. In the past 21 seasons Owens has helped Boise State win Pac-10 Conference Championships in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2011, while finishing runner-up for the league title in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2010, and placing third at the 2006 tournament. Owens has also help direct the Broncos to nine top 25 team finishes at the NCAA National Wrestling Championships in the past 12 years, 29 individual Pac-10 titles, 83 individual appearances at the NCAA National Tournament and two individual national championships. Those national championships included Kirk White’s first-place finish in the 165-pound weight class at the 1999 NCAA Tournament, and Ben Cherrington’s first-place finish at the 2006 tournament in the 157-pound weight division. In 2010-11, Owens helped Boise State to one of its best season on record, sending a school-best, 10 student-athletes to the NCAA Tournament after winning another Pac-10 title. At the national tournament, the Broncos finished ninth with 57.5 points, a school record. Boise State’s recent string of success started in 1999 with a runner-up finish at the Pac-10 Tournament and a 10th place finish at nationals. That year Boise State won two individual titles at the league tournament and earned two All-America awards, including the school’s first national wrestling championship by White. Boise State followed up its 1999 success by winning its first Pac-10 Championship in 2000. Three Broncos won league titles that year and eight individuals advanced to the national collegiate tournament. At the NCAA Championships Boise State won three more All-America awards. Larry Quisel, who had placed third at 157 pounds in 1999, had the highest Bronco finish in 2000 with a runner-up performance in the same weight class. White also won his second national All-America award with a fifth place finish at 165 pounds, while Cash Edwards won his first All-America award with a seventh place finish at 184 pounds. As a team, Boise State scored 41.5 points to place 12th. The 2001 season saw a return to the top 10 at the NCAA Tournament as the Bronco team posted another 10th place finish and three more All-American awards.

White won his third individual national honor, Edwards his second and Rusty Cook his first All-America award in the 197-pound weight division. In 2002 Boise State was back on top of the league standings scoring 123 points to capture the team’s second Pac-10 Championship. Owens helped guide two Bronco wrestlers to individual league crowns as Jesse Brock and Collin Robertson won the 133 and 149-pound weight divisions, respectively. Eight Broncos advanced to the national tournament with 125-pounder Ben VomBaur the highlight for Boise State placing fourth in the 125-pound weight class. As a team, the Broncos placed 19th with 24 points. Owens helped Boise State to another top 20 finish at nationals in 2003 as the team placed 12th with 45 points. Nine Bronco wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Tournament, with three (VomBaur - 125 pounds, Robertson - 149 and Boe Rushton - heavyweight) coming away with All-American honors. In 2004, the Broncos captured their third league crown in six years and advanced five individuals to the NCAA National Tournament. Following another runner-up finish for the Pac-10 crown in 2005, five Broncos again advanced to the collegiate championships. Boise State enjoyed another successful trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2006 as Cherrington’s individual national championship (157 pounds) guided the team to a 24th place finish. Prior to the national tournament, Cherrington won his second Pac-10 title, and Scott Jorgensen became the first Bronco to win three individual conference championships (133 pounds).Owens helped coach the Broncos to its second consecutive Pac-10 Championship with a conference record 172.5 points in 2008-09. Hall and Smith also helped Boise State to its runner-up finish at the Pac-10 tournament as both wrestlers captured individual conference titles. Before becoming an assistant at Boise State, Owens was a member of the Oklahoma State University wrestling team, helping the Cowboys to the 1990 NCAA National Championship. During the 1990 season, Owens was named to the freshman All-American team. He also earned two All-American honors in 1990 and 1992 placing third and second, respectively, at the NCAA Tournament. mEET ThE cOAchEShis senior season at Oklahoma State, Owens was ranked number one in the nation at his weight class of 134 pounds. But a knee injury ended the season early for Owens. Owens finished his career at Oklahoma State with an overall record of 85-6 and helped the Cowboys to the 1992 Big Eight Conference Championship. Owens was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the St. Louis Open in 1990, and was runner-up at in his weight class at the prestigious Espoir National Tournament. A native of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Owens was the State of Idaho’s first four-time high school champion and finished his prep career undefeated with an overall record of 123-0. Owens and his wife Robyn have two children – Taylor (12) and Cade (7).


Kirk WhiteAssistant Coach - Sixth Season

One of the all-time greats in Boise State wrestling history, Kirk White is entering his sixth year as an assistant coach for the Broncos. The 1999 NCAA National Champion at 165 pounds, White earned a total of three All-America awards, and one league title while wrestling for Boise State.

Since completing his collegiate career in 2001, White has coached at many different levels while continuing his competitive career in Freestyle wrestling at the national and international level. As a sophomore in 1999, White burst on to the collegiate scene when he became the first Bronco to win an NCAA National Championship (165 pounds) in wrestling. He continued his collegiate success by earning two more NCAA All-America awards in 2000 and 2001 to become the only three-time NCAA Wrestling All-American in Boise State history. White posted a four-year record of 130-26 for an .833 winning percentage. Along with his coaching duties, White has continued to compete in Freestyle, winning several medals at international tournaments in his weight class of 74 kilos (163 pounds). During the 2006-07 season White captured the silver medal at the Sunkist International. One week later White avenged his loss to Scott Owen at Sunkist, handing him a 12-3 defeat to win the RealPro Wrestling West Regional. He also won the Clansmen International Gold Medal. Following surgery in February of 2007 to clean up an old knee injury, White came back four months later to compete in the World Team Trials. He won his first match before losing to No. 1-ranked Joe Heskett in the next round. In November of 2007, White was ranked ninth in the USA team rankings at 74kg (163 pounds). Injuries kept White out of the 2006 rankings, but prior to that he was ranked third in 2003, fourth in 2004 and second in 2005. At the 2003 World Cup hosted in Boise, White competed for World Team Select, helping his squad to the World Cup silver medal. In both 2003 and 2004, White represented the United States in the Pan-American Championships, where he won the silver medal on both occasions. He has earned prestigious USA National All-America Medals (top eight) in each of his five attempts (1999, 2002-05), including a second place finish in his most recent campaign (2005). In 2003 and 2005, White was a

USA National Team Member (top three at the US World Team Trials). In the 2004 Olympic Team Trials he finished fourth overall. White has also served as a resident athlete at the USA Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, a student assistant at Boise State in 2001-02, an assistant coach at Pacific Lutheran University in 2002-03 and Highline Community College in 2003-04, and as the head coach at Fife High School in Tacoma, Wash., during the 2004-05 season. White earned his bachelor’s degree in physical and secondary education from Boise State in May of 2000, and his master’s degree from Idaho State University in athletic administration in August of 2002.

Tim Socha is in his sixth season as head strength and conditioning coach at Boise State. Socha joined the Bronco staff in May of 2006. Before coming to Boise State, Socha spent two seasons as the assistant director of strength and conditioning for football at the University

of Louisville, where he helped the Cardinals to a pair of bowl games and an overall 20-4 record. Socha worked three years at the University of Wyoming, where he served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach for football and was the head strength and conditioning coach for wrestling, track and field and cross country.

From 1999-2001 Socha was a graduate assistant at Auburn University, where he assisted with football, baseball and softball and served as the head strength and conditioning coach for men’s golf. Socha is a 1999 graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in kinesiology and a minor in coaching. He received a master’s of education in exercise physiology from Auburn in 2001. Socha was a four-year letter winner in football with the Minnesota Gophers (1995-98) and worked as a student assistant in strength and conditioning after his senior season. In 2009 Socha and wife Jessica had their first daughter, Alexa.

Dale Holste is in his 16th year as the equipment manager at Boise State. He joined the Boise State athletic department in 1996. Holste was named the Athletic Equipment Manager Association’s District 8 Equipment Manager of the Year in 2005 and currently serves as the president of District 8 of the AEMA.

Holste came to Boise State from Fort Hays State (Kan.) University, where he was the equipment manager and administrative assistant from 1990.

Prior to his stint at Fort Hays State, Holste worked at Mesa State (Colo.) College as an equipment manager from 1985-89. He has also served as an equipment manager at the Mile High Football Camp in Greeley, Colo., for the Denver Dynamite of the Arena Football League, as an intern for the Washington Redskins and for the Idaho Stallions of the Indoor Professional Football League. A native of Evergreen, Colo., Holste graduated from Fort Hays State in 1995. He is a certified member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association. Holste and his wife Nancy live in Boise and have five children – Emily, Becky, Lacey, Kaycie and Craig.

2010-11 – Jason Chamberlain put together the best season of his career in 2010-11 as he wrestled to a third-place finish at the NCAA tournament and earned All-American honors for the first time. After successfully winning the second Pac-10 Conference title of his career Chamberlain rolled with momentum into the national championships where he would earn a 5-1 record to clinch third-place at 149 pounds. After a decisive 13-4 win over Dane Johnson of Pittsburgh in the first round Chamberlain’s road would be well challenged, as he won three of his final five matches in overtime. He first beat Joseph Napoli (Lehigh) 6-4 in OT before knocking off Kevin LeValley (Bucknell) 4-3 in OT to earn a spot in the semifinals. Chamberlain’s run at a national title would fall in the round-of-four, though, as a 4-1 loss to Frank Molinaro (Penn State) bumped him to consolation action. In the consolation bracket Chamberlain would rebound with a 3-1 OT win against Jamal Parks of Oklahoma State in the consolation semifinals. With third-place resting on his final match Chamberlain continued to roll, beating Ganbayar Sanjaa of American by 3-0 decision to conclude the weekend. With the strong showing at nationals Chamberlain finished the season with a 29-2 overall record, including an 18-1 record in tournament competition. His dominant performance in tournament matches included going 3-0 at the Pac-10 tournament as he captured his second conference title in three years. Chamberlain opened the Pac-10 Championships with a 19-4 technical fall victory (5:19) over John Cardenas of Cal State Bakersfield. He would follow that with a 21-7 major decision win over Timmy Boone (Stanford) in the semifinals and a 5-2 decision against Scott Sakaguchi (Oregon State) in the finals. The tournament win marked the third of the season for Chamberlain, as he also won the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite and the Reno Tournament of Champions. He concluded the season with eight wins by major decision, while also winning twice by fall and twice by technical fall. Chamberlain ranked second on the team in total wins (29) and major decision victories (8).

2009-10 – Chamberlain earned his second consecutive NCAA tournament berth after finishing third at the 2010 Pac-10 Conference Championship. Chamberlain would wrestle well early on at nationals, but back-to-back losses in his fourth and fifth matches of the weekend would bounce him from the tournament. He opened the NCAA championships with a 9-5 decision over David Cheza of Michigan State. That was followed with a 10-2 major decision win over Brian Stephens (Virginia Tech) and a 5-2 win against Kevin LeValley of Bucknell. Chamberlain’s run would end there, however, as he lost to Lance Palmer of Ohio State by fall (1:14) and Kyle Borshoff of American, 5-3, to fall from tournament action. Chamberlain’s strong showing at nationals capped another solid year wrestling at 149 pounds for Boise State. Steady performance in conference duals earned Chamberlain the No. 1 seed at the Pac-10 tournament. But despite entering the conference championships as the favorite, Chamberlain suffered an upset in the semifinals to end his run at defending his 2009 Pac-10 title. After advancing through the quarterfinals with a 23-6 technical fall against John Cardenas of Cal State Bakersfield, Chamberlain was stunned by Nick Fisher of Cal Poly as Fisher pinned Chamberlain at the 4:24 mark of the semifinal match. Chamberlain managed to rebound from the loss by beating Oregon State’s Roger Pena, 6-1, in consolation action before dropping Nicholas Jordan of Cal State Fullerton by 12-3 major decision in the third-place match. Chamberlain finished the season 26-10 with a 12-4 record in dual competition. He started 16-of-17 duals for the Broncos at 149 pounds. He also tied for fourth in dual wins and tied for fifth in dual winning percentage. Chamberlain wrestled in two regular season tournaments, the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite and the Reno Tournament of Champions. He finished fourth at the Cliff Keen with a 4-2 record, and was second in Reno with a 4-1 record. Chamberlain finished the regular season ranked No. 6 by InterMat, which marked his highest ranking of the 2009-10 season.

2008-09 – Chamberlain experienced a great deal of success as a true freshman at Boise State, finishing the Pac-10 Conference tournament with a 4-0 record en route to winning his first individual conference championship. Following his conference title run, Chamberlain also earned a NCAA national tournament berth. At nationals, Chamberlain failed to get rolling, bowing out of the tournament with a 1-2 record. Despite a valient effort, Chamberlain fell in his first round match, 5-2, against Iowa State’s Mitch Mueller. His only win of the tournament came against Matt Cathell of Delaware State, 9-3, in the second round. His final loss of the weekend would come in heart breaking fashion, falling to Kyle Borshoff of American University, 3-2. On his way to capturing the 149-pound Pac-10 championship, Chamberlain pinned (3:48) Calvin Miller of Cal State Bakersfield to open tournament action. He followed with an 8-2 decision against Vincent Varela of Arizona State and a 4-0 decision against Teddy Astorga of Cal State Fullerton to put himself in a highly anticipated championship rematch. Chamberlain managed to avenge two regular season losses to Oregon State’s Heinrich Barnes in the championship match, earning a 6-5 decision to claim the Pac-10 crown. He finished the season with a 22-9 overall record, 10-6 in duals. He started 16 of 20 duals for the Broncos, including the last 14 duals at 149-pounds. Chamberlain finished the regular season ranked No. 16 nationally by USA Today/InterMat/NWCA. He recorded three major decisions, three technical falls and three pins throughout the season. He also captured one tournament title by winning the Body Bar tournament.

Freestyle – Chamberlain has qualified to compete at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, April 21-22, 2012. He joins former teamate Adam Hall as a competitor for a spot on the Olympic team at 145.5 pounds (66kg).

Throughout the summer following his freshman season at Boise State, Chamberlain qualified to represent the United States at the 2009 FILA Junior World Championships in Ankara, Turkey. He did so by winning the 66 kg (145.5 pound) weight class at the FILA Junior Teal Trials. During the summer prior to arriving at Boise State, Chamberlain competed in the Junior division of the FILA World Team Trails and placed third in his weight class at 145.5 pounds (66kg).

High School – There weren’t many things that Chamberlain didn’t accomplish during his illustrious high school wrestling career. While at Springville High School, he won four state championships and multiple national titles. The four-year varsity letter winner won a state title in each of his four seasons. He won the High School Junior national championship and ROTC championship as a junior and was the high school national champion as a senior. Chamberlain was also named team captain as a senior. His high school was Justin Judkins.

2010-11 – Chris Givens wrestled sparingly for Boise State during his redshirt junior season as he saw action in just one tournament and one dual. He finished the year with a 4-2 record thanks to a 4-1 finish at the Northern Colorado Old Chicago Open to place third at 197 pounds. His only dual match resulted in a loss.

2009-10 – Givens wrestled in just five matches for the Broncos as a redshirt sophomore at Boise State. He finished with a 2-3 record, having competed in two regular season

tournaments. His top finish came at the Utah Valley Open where he placed second after losing to Josh Wood (Utah Valley) by fall (1:47) in the title match.

2008-09 – Givens wrestled in nine matches for Boise State during his redshirt freshman season with the Broncos. He wrestled in three duals and finished the season with a 1-8 overall record. Recorded a pin (6:25) against Dylan Snavely at the California Collegiate Open tournament.

2007-08 – Givens redshirted during the 2007-08 season, but did have success wrestling unattached in his limited action. Givens wrestled in two regular season tournaments, finishing with a 6-3 record. He wrestled in the amateur 197-pound division of the Cowboy Open, where he fell in the championship match, 3-0. Givens also wrestled at the Best of the West Tournament where he finished with a 3-2 record.

High School – Givens posted an overall record of 37-5 (88.1%) his senior season at Colony High School. He was named Colony High School wrestler of the year, the most valuable wrestler at the Mt. Baldy tournament, and finished runner-up in his weight class at the CIF state championships. Along with earning three varsity letters in wrestling, Givens was also a three year letterman in football where he earned first-team All-CIF honors as a defensive lineman. 2010-11 – Derek Toney saw action in 16 matches during his sophomore campaign with the Broncos, including appearances in three duals at 197 pounds. He finished the season with a 5-11 overall record. Toney’s top outing of the season came at the Clackamas Open where he finished with a 4-2 record. He competed at the Clackamas Open, the Northern Colorado Old Chicago Open, the Reno Tournament of Champions and the Utah Valley Open.

2009-10 – Toney wrestled sparingly during his first season at Boise State, seeing action in just one dual and five tournaments. He finished the season with a 3-9 overall record.

Toney did record two wins by fall.

Collegiate Career – Toney wrestled one year at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. He was the starting heavyweight and was named the team’s freshman of the year. His head coach was Sevond Cole.

High School – Toney earned four varsity wrestling and four varsity football letters at Reardan High School in Reardan, Wash. Toney finished high school with a 118-20 overall record. He won two state wrestling championships and also earned a third-place finish at the ISSI wrestling tournament in Australia. Toney also earned All-State honors as a defensive tackle. Toney was a member of the Future Farmers of America. His high school coach was Mark Leenhouts.

2008-09 (Redshirt Sophomore) - Chriswell went 13-1 in his first season as a member of the Bronco wrestling program, going 3-0 in tournament action.

Collegiate Career - Brent Chriswell first joined the Boise State wrestling program in 2008-09 after spending the previous two seasons at Arizona State and Purdue University. He redshirted the 2006-07 season at Purdue before transferring the ASU, where he would wrestle his way to the 2008 Pac-10 title and a NCAA tournament appearance. ASU announced the discontinuation of its wrestling program (ASU would later reinstate the program) following the 2007-08 season, which forced Chriswell to transfer to his third university in as many years.

High School - At South Kitsap High School, Chriswell was a two-time state champion. He compiled a three-year record of 107-3. As a senior Chriswell went undefeated (39-0) with 33 pins. His high school coach was Chad Nuss.

2010-11 – Michael Cuthbertson wrestled sparingly for Boise State during his second season competing for the Broncos, seeing action in five duals and two tournaments at 165 pounds. He opened the season by winning seven consecutive duals including two wins by major decision. He finished the season with an 8-5 overall record and a 3-2 record in dual competition. Cuthbertson wrestled to a second-place finish at the Northern Colorado Old Chicago Open where his only loss would come to teammate Kurt Swartz, 3-1 in overtime of the championship match. He also competed at the Reno Tournament of Champions. Cuthbertson also enjoyed success off the mat in 2010-11 as he was named Pac-10 Conference All-Academic First Team.

2009-10 – Cuthbertson had a solid redshirt freshman season for Boise State as he started 16-of-17 duals for the Broncos at 165 pounds. He ended the season with a strong showing at the Pac-10 Conference tournament where he placed fourth with a 2-2 record. Cuthbertson opened the conference championship with a 6-3 win over Joseph Granata of Cal State Bakersfield. He would fall next in the semifinals, however, with a 6-2 loss to Daniel Brascetta of Oregon State. Cuthbertson rebounded with an 8-2 decision over Steven Vasquez of Cal Poly to earn a spot in the third-place match. A 10-4 loss to Kyle Deberry of Arizona State would end his weekend with the fourth-place finish. Cuthbertson finished the season with a 17-15 overall record, which included an 8-9 record in dual matches. Cuthbertson wrestled in two regular season tournaments. His top finish came at the Reno Tournament where he placed fifth after recording a 3-2 record on the weekend.

2008-09 – Redshirted for Boise State. Cuthbertson wrestled in one tournament unattached, the California Collegiate Open, where he compiled a 3-1 record en route to a second-place finish. His only loss of the tournament came in a 4-2 decision against Robert Davis of Menlo College in the championship match.

High School – Cuthbertson joined the Bronco wrestling program boasting four consecutive Alabama high school state wrestling titles after a dominating career at Scottsboro High School. Cuthbertson was named team captain as a junior and senior. He was also named to the junior freestyle All-America team and the Wrestling USA Academic Team while at Scottsboro. Cuthbertson was also a member of the National Honor Society. His high school coach was Chris Staton.

Collegiate Career: Wrestled for two years at University of Nebraska-Omaha under coach Mike Denney where he earned second-and third-place finishes at the NCAA Division II Tournament. Ivanov was also a two-time Academic All-American during his time at UNO.

High School – Wrestled under coach Trevor Carritt at Lewis Central High School. Ivanov placed third in the 2008 Iowa State Tournament at 119 pounds finishing his senior year with a 54-1 record and was ranked fifth in the nation at 119 by Wrestling USA Magazine for Best 2008 High School Seniors. He Represented Team Iowa in the national meets in 2007 and 2008, where he was a double All-American at Junior Nationals, placing fifth in Greco Roman and fourth in freestyle.

2010-11 – Brian Owen did not wrestle in any matches for the Broncos during his redshirt sophomore season.

2009-10 – Redshirted the 2009-10 season for Boise State.

2008-09 – Owen spent most of the 2008-09 season wrestling for the Broncos at 125-pounds. He qualified for the NCAA tournament with an at-large bid after placing fourth at the Pac-10 tournament. Owen’s first NCAA tournament appearance was short lived,

as he fell in his first two matches to conclude his freshman season. Owen’s first loss came against No. 3 seed Angel Escobedo of Indiana, 5-0. His second loss came in a 9-6 decision against Nicholas Bedelyon of Kent State. At the Pac-10 tournament Owen went 2-2, losing both his matches to Marcos Orozco of UC Davis. After falling to Orozco, 4-1, in the opening round, Owen won two consecutive matches to earn a rematch with Orozco in the third-place match. Despite another hard fought effort, he eventually fell again to Orozco,

7-3. Owen’s two Pac-10 tournament wins came against Matt Sencenbaugh of Stanford, 5-3, and Jake Gonzales of Oregon State, 2-1. He finished the season with a 12-9 overall record, 6-5 in duals. He recorded two major decisions and one fall throughout the year. Owen spent six weeks ranked nationally in the top-20 by USA Today/InterMat/NWCA. He reached as high as No. 14 on Nov. 26. Owen recorded one tournament win throughout the season, winning the Body Bar tournament.

Freestyle – Owen placed third last summer at the FILA Junior World Team Trails and represented the United States at the Junior Pan-American games in Ecuador. Competing in the 132-pound (60kg) weight class, Owen placed third.

High School – Owen put the finishing touches on a stellar high school career with an undefeated season and a Washington state championship in 2008. He was the No. 2 ranked high school wrestler in the country at 119 pounds in his final season at University High School. Owen finished his career with a 124-4 record and two state titles. He also earned All State honors in academics twice (2007 and 2008). During the summer of 2007 Owen had great success at the junior national tournament. He finished second in the freestyle division and third in Greco-Roman. He is the brother of former Bronco volunteer assistant coach Tom Owen. His high school coach was Don Owen.

2010-11 – Isaac Romero competed in just two tournaments for Boise State during his first season competing for the Broncos. He went 3-3 on the season thanks in large part to a second-place finish at the Northern Colorado Old Chicago Open. Romero’s only loss at the Old Chicago Open came in a 5-2 decision to teammate Alan Bartelli in the championship match. He also went 0-2 at the Reno Tournament of Champions.

Dickinson State University – Romero wrestled at Dickenson State University in North Dakota under head coach Thad O’Donell before transferring to Boise State.

High School – He was a four-time varsity letter winner at Sunnyside High School in Sunnyside, Wash. where he compiled a 40-1 overall record as a senior. Romero captured a state championship, along with a freestyle state title, in his final high school season. He was also a three-time All-American. Romero was named to his high school dean’s list as well as the honor roll. His high school coach was George Paulus.

2010-11 – Josh Strait earned valuable experience during his redshirt sophomore campaign at Boise State, seeing action in two duals and four tournaments. He finished the year with a 13-6 overall record thanks in part to a 5-0 finish at the Northern Colorado Old Chicago Open. Strait won two matches by major decision at the Old Chicago Open en route to capturing the 141-pound title. He also wrestled at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite, the Reno Tournament of Champions and the Utah Valley Open. Strait also won the UVU Open with a 3-0 record on the weekend. Strait also enjoyed success off the mat in 2010-11 as he was named Pac-10 Conference All-Academic First Team.

2009-10 – Strait wrestled in four tournaments during his redshirt freshman season with the Broncos. He finished the spring with a 12-6 overall record. Strait earned third-place finishes at both the Inland NW Collegiate tournament and the Utah Valley Open. Strait was 5-1 at the Inland NW and 5-1 at the UVU Open.

2008-09 – Redshirted for Boise State last season. Strait did compete unattached at the California Collegiate Open. He finished the tournament with a 4-2 record. Strait earned one win by fall (6:34), which came against Ryan Berkley of Cal State Fullerton.

High School – Strait finished his highly decorated high school career with two state championships, a state runner-up and a third-place finish. He posted a career record of 158-11, including three 40 win seasons. Strait’s state titles came in his freshman and senior seasons, which he recorded 40-3 and 40-2 records, respectively. Strait is also a five time Cadet/Junior USA Wrestling All-American. He graduated high school as a National Honor Society member and ranked third in his class. His high school coach was Lonny Pahlke.

2009-10 – DeMuelle wrestled most of the season as a backup at 133 pounds for Boise State, but did step in to wrestle three duals for the Broncos. He also represented the Broncos at the Pac-10 tournament. DeMuelle finished his freshman season with a 2-8 record and a seventh-place finish at the conference championships.

High School – Benjamin DeMuelle joined the Boise State wrestling program after a successful senior season at Westview High School in San Diego, Calif. where he won the 125-pound CIF Championship. DeMuelle compiled an 83-20 record in three years of varsity action, which was capped by winning the CIF and the San Diego Sectionals Championship. His high school coach was Perry Watson.

High School – Was a three-time league champion at Colony High School under coach Jason Smith. Dixon was also a California Interscholastic Federation during his senior season and qualified for the state tournament. As a senior, Dixon notched a 55-4 record to end his career with a 112-18 mark. Selected as the varsity captain during his final two years at Colony.

2011 NCAA National Qualifier – Heavyweight

2010-11 – J.T. Felix experienced an up and down freshman campaign at Boise State that did culminate with a strong finish as he placed second at the Pac-10 Conference tournament and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. Felix would go 1-2 at nationals, but fought all three matches to within two point finishes. After opening the tournament with a 3-2 loss to Dominque Bradley (Missouri) he rebounded with a 3-2 win over Paul Snyder of Hofstra. Felix would see his consolation run end in his

next match however, with a 4-2 loss to Ricky Alcala of Indiana. Felix’s first trip to nationals came on the heels of an improbable run at the Pac-10 tournament in which he fell just short of pulling an upset in the heavyweight title match. After opening the weekend with a 2-1 win over Dylan Rush of Stanford, he punched his ticket to the finals with a 5-3 upset against Levi Cooper of Arizona State in the semifinals. His run at the conference title would fall just short, as a last minute takedown by Clayton Jack of Oregon State gave Jack a 6-4 advantage as time expired. His strong postseason showing capped a solid first season for Felix who ended the year with an 11-13 overall record. He went 3-6 in dual matches and 8-7 in tournament competition. Felix competed in two regular season tournaments; the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite and the Reno Tournament of Champions.

High School – Felix came to Boise State from Centennial High School in Corona, Calif. where he enjoyed a highly decorated high school career. As a senior he finished runner-up at the state championships, while also capturing a third-place finish at senior nationals. Felix was a four-time league champ and a two-time CIF champ. In the spring of 2010 he was named Inland Empire Athlete of the Year after compiling a 62-4 overall record. Along with wrestling, Felix also earned four varsity letters in football. As a junior helped the Centennial High School football team win a state championship. Felix graduated with Salutatorian honors with a 4.4 grade point average. His high school coach was Randy Campbell.

Shawn JonesRedshirt Sophomore - Weight class: 133Blackfoot, Idaho - Blackfoot High School

Major: Criminal Justice

2010-11 – Shawn Jones redshirted his sophomore campaign at Boise State but did compete unattached at the Cowboy Open where he wrestled to a 0-2 record.

High School – Jones arrives at Boise State with an incredible high school resume that boasts four state championships. He competed at Snake River High School in Blackfoot, Idaho where he compiled a 156-11 overall record in four years. Jones was a four-time varsity letter winner wrestling for head coach Jeff Gardner.

Jake SwartzRedshirt Sophomore - Weight class: 184

Auburn, Washington - Auburn High SchoolMajor: Accountancy

2010-11 – Jake Swartz put together a solid redshirt freshman campaign at Boise State as he became the primary starter at 174 pounds for the Broncos. Swartz made his first NCAA tournament appearance with an at-large selection after placing fifth at the Pac-10 Conference Championships. He would put together a 2-2 record at nationals to conclude the season. Swartz opened his run at NCAAs with an 8-2 decision over Matt Fullowan of Franklin & Marshall. He would suffer his first defeat just one match later however, with a loss by 8-2 decision to Colby Covington of Oregon State. In consolation action Swartz managed to bounce back with a 7-5 win against Rob Morrison of Rider, but would fall from tournament action in his next match with a 7-2 loss to Mike Benefiel of Oklahoma State.

Swartz concluded the season with a 20-16 overall record and a 14-8 record in tournament competition. His tournament record also included a 2-2 finish at the Pac-10 tournament. Swartz opened conference championship action with a pin of Mark Savalle of Cal State Fullerton at the 5:21 mark. A 10-2 loss to Covington and a 2-1 overtime loss to Eric Starks (Arizona State) pushed him to the fifth-place match though. Swartz managed to rebound with a 2-1 overtime win over Steven Vasquez (Cal Poly) in his final conference match. He finished the season four wins by fall and another two by major decision. Swartz also enjoyed his share of success off the mat as he received multiple academic honors. He was named Pac-10 Conference All-Academic Second Team and National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic.

2009-10 – Swartz wrestled unattached at four tournaments while redshirting for the Broncos. He finished the season with a 14-3 overall record after earning four top-four finishes. He earned tournament titles with first-place finishes at both the Utah Valley Open and the Clackamas Open. Swartz also placed third at the Inland NW Collegiate and fourth at the Southern Oregon Open.

High School – Swartz enjoyed an extremely successful high school career, which was highlighted by winning a Washington State High School Championship. He earned four varsity wrestling letters at Auburn High School in Auburn, Wash. His high school coach was John Aiken.

Major: Exercise Science

High School – Was a three-year letterwinner under coach Tim Coubler at Republic High school and Steve Glassey at Santiago High School in California. Bacon wrestled his way to a state championship his freshman year at 130 pounds. He followed the title-run with a second-place finish at the state tournament during his sophomore season. As a junior he earned his second state championship, this time at 149 pounds. Bacon is also a two-time winner of the Tri-State tournament, pitting the best wrestlers of Washington, Oregon and Idaho against each other. As a senior, Bacon earned third-place finishes at both the Super 32 Tournament and the Reno Tournament of Champions at 171 pounds.

2010-11 – Jake Briggs redshirted during his freshman campaign for Boise State. He did compete unattached at the Clackamas Open where he wrestled to a 4-1 record. Briggs earned one win by major decision.

High School – Briggs concluded his high school career with a 54-2 record during his senior season at Bella Vista High School in Orangevale, Calif. He won 46 or more matches in each of his four years of high school. As a junior Briggs compiled a 54-5 overall record. He had a strong showing at the 2009 Reno Tournament of Champions,

where he placed third. Briggs’ high school coach was Mike Lee.

Chris CastilloFreshman - Weight class: 149

Zillah, Washington - Zillah High SchoolMajor: Health Science

High School – Comes to Boise State as a four-time Washington State Wrestling Champion under coaches Mike Gonzalez and Mike Castillo at Zillah High School, making him only the seventh wrestler to win four state titles in the history of Washington interscholastic wrestling. He held a 167-2 career record including a 42-0 unbeaten mark during his senior season. Castillo was also a three-year letterwinner in football at Zillah.

Major: Education

High School – A graduate of McCall-Donnelly High School where he was a three-time wrestling letterwinner under head coach Scott Erekson. He won the 3A Idaho State Wrestling Championship as a junior at 160 pounds and finished runner-up during his senior season at the 171 weight class. Clark has earned national recognition as a three-time Judo All-American. Graduated high school with a 3.77 GPA.

Brennen ConnollyFreshman - Weight class: 174

Boise, Idaho - Mountain view High SchoolMajor: Mechanical Engineering

High School – Came to Boise State from Mountain View High School in Meridian where he wrestled for four years under the direction of head coach Cliff Laughlin. Placed in the 5A state tournament three separate times, capped off by a runner-up finish during his senior season. Connolly also played varsity lacrosse and football at Mountain View.

Casey GeorgeFreshman - Weight class: 141

Lewiston, Idaho - Lewiston High SchoolMajor: Business

High School – George comes to Boise State as a three-time 5A Idaho State Wrestling Champion. He earned four varsity letters wrestling for the Bengals at Lewiston High School under coach Dan Maurer. George finished 45-0 in his senior season to go 167-4 during his career. He is also a two-time Tri-State Champion as well as a two-time Greco National runner up.

Major: Business

High School – Wrestled four years at Nyssa High School under coach Luke Cleaver. Hartley finished in the top three at the state tournament every year of his career, which was highlighted by back-to-back 3A state championships at 119 pounds. He concluded his high school career with a 150-16 record, going 84-2 in his last two seasons. Graduated with a 3.85 GPA.

High School – A graduate of Union High School in Vancouver, Wash., where he earned four letters in wrestling under head coach John Godinho. Hu competed in the 3A wrestling tournament as a freshman, sophomore and a senior where he took fourth, sixth and third place, respectively.

High School – Mars was a three-time district champion while competing at Richland High School under head coach Scott Surplus. He finished his career with a sixth-place finish in the 4A state tournament as a senior. Mars Tallied a 119-41 record during his time at Richland.

2010-11 – Alec Robbie redshirted his first season with the Broncos.

High School – Robbie earned three varsity wrestling letters competing at Tesoro High School in Las Floras, Calif. He was first-team all-conference and honorable mention all-state as a senior. Robbie was named Orange County All-Star MVP, as well as first-team all-county. He also earned two varsity football letters at Tesoro HS. Robbie’s high school coach was Ken Workman.

High School – Holden Packard is a graduate of Mountain View High School where he wrestled for four years under head coach Cliff Laughlin. He is a three-time 5A Idaho State Wrestling Champion, winning the title during his freshman, junior and senior seasons. Packard excelled both on the mat and in the classroom, graduating with a 157-17 career record and a 3.75 GPA.

High Scool - Cole Rice comes to Boise State with a 173-18 high school record at Arlee High School under coaches Ken Hill and Dan Rics. He was a runner up in the state tournament as a sophomore before winning the title in both his junior and senior seasons. Rice holds Arlee school records for both career wins (173) and single-season wins (43). Graduated with a 3.86 GPA.

High School – Wooden joins the Broncos from Spring Creek High School in Spring Creek, Nev. where he was a four-time state champion. He finished his senior season with a 53-2 overall record, after winning at least 46 matches during his first three years. Wooden was named Elko County MVP three times in high school. He also excelled in the classroom, being named to the honor roll and academic all-state. His high school

coach was Wade Pherson.

Ben Cherrington capped a perfect season during his senior year of 2005-06 when he became just the second Boise State wrestler in school history to win an individual NCAA National Championship. Following an early-season injury which kept him out of the line-up until midway through his final season, Cherrington was unbeatable once he stepped back on the mat, posting a 20-0 record on his way to the 157-pound title at the NCAA Tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla. Cherrington dominated his opponents during his undefeated season, winning three matches by pin, three by technical fall and six by major decision. Along the way to his national collegiate title, Cherrington also recorded his second-straight Pac-10 Championship. His first came in in 2005 at the 149-pound weight class. Cherrington qualified for the NCAA National Tournament all four years of his collegiate career. His overall collegiate record was 93-32, including a mark of 54-8 for an .871 winning percentage his final two seasons.

Kirk White was the first Boise State wrestler to win a NCAA National Championship when he captured the 165-pound weight class in 1999. As a sophomore that year, White took collegiate wrestling by storm by winning the Pac-10 Championship, and then continuing his winning streak at the NCAA National Tournament. White dominated his opponents during his championship season, posting an overall record of 38-1. His only loss came at the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Dual. While he did not win another NCAA national title as a junior and senior, he did earn two more NCAA All-America awards to become the only three-time NCAA Wrestling All-American for the Broncos. White completed his four years at Boise State with an overall record of 130-26 for a winning percentage of .833. The breakdown of White’s season-by-season

results are 1997-98: 27-6 (81.8%); 1998-99: 38-1(97.4%); 1999-00: 20-8 (71.4%); 2000-01: 29-6 (82.9%). In September of 2007, White was inducted into the Boise State University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Charles Burton - 2000 United States Olympic Freestyle Team Member

Former Bronco wrestler Charles Burton made history in September of 2000, when he became the first Boise State University athlete to become a member of a United States Olympic Team. A native of Meridian, Idaho, Burton was a 1996 NCAA All-American at 167 pounds and completed his career at Boise State with 101 victories. He representated the United States at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games competing in the Freestyle division and placing fifth in the 87 kilogram (187.25 pound) weight class.

Burton’s overall record at the Sydney Games was 3-1. He won his first two Olympic matches by not allowing a single point by his opponents. In the quarterfinals Burton

held a 2-1 lead in the overtime period when Magomed Ibragimov of Macedonia scored a three-point throw to post a 4-2 win. Burton won the fifth-place match by injury default over Yang Hyun Mo of Korea. While competing in Freestyle, Burton won the 1997 University Freestyle National Championship, the bronze medal at the 1997 Pan American Games and a silver medal at the 1999 World Team Trials. He earned his spot on the 2000 Olympic Team when he defeated then-World Champion Les Gutches in a special wrestle-off. The two wrestlers split the first two matches before Burton defeated Gutches 5-0 in the third match to earn his roster position on the national team. In November of 2001, Burton was inducted into the Boise State University Athletic Hall of Fame.

When Mike Young retired as the Bronco wrestling head coach at the end of the 2001-02 season, he did so as one of, it not, the most successful coaches in the history of Boise State athletics. In 31 years guiding the Broncos, Young produced 12 conference championships, one national champion, 11 All-Americans and earned 12 conference Coach of the Year awards. Ten of his league titles and coach of the year awards came when Boise State was a member of the Big Sky Conference. The final two came in 2000 and 2002 when he led the Broncos to league crowns in the Pac-10 Conference. Kirk White was Young’s most successful individual wrestler, winning the 1999 NCAA National Championship in the 165-pound weight class and becoming the only three-time NCAA All-American. Young’s two most successful years at the NCAA National Tournament came in 1999 and 2000. The 1999 team posted the best finish in school history at the time, placing 10th. The next season Boise State finished 12th as three Broncos earned All-America

honors. Young also coached the first Boise State student-athlete to become a member of a United States Olympic Team. Charles Burton, who wrestled for Young and the Broncos in the late 1990s, competed in Freestyle at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, and placed fifth in the 85-kg weight class. Young began his Boise State career in 1970 as an assistant wrestling coach, and took over the head coaching position in 1972. In 1987 he was inducted into Boise State University’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

In an effort to continue the climb in competition, Boise State has outlined a plan to improve the infrastructure and fi nancial position of its athletic department. The project is called the “Initiative for Athletic Excellence.” It is a detailed plan that lays out the direction for the department and its facilities to ensure the Broncos’ continued growth and success.

In the last 13 years Boise State’s growth has led to the addition of women’s soccer in 1998, women’s swimming & diving in 2006-07 and softball in 2008-09. In recent years Boise State has built four competition facilities: the state-of-the-art Appleton Outdoor Tennis Center (2002), the Boas Soccer and Tennis Complex (2003), Jacksons Indoor Track (2003 - a joint effort with the city of Nampa) and the Mountain Cove Softball Complex (2008). In January of 2006 the Caven-Williams Sports Complex, a 97,000 square-foot indoor practice facility, was opened next to Bronco Stadium. The Boas Indoor Tennis Center also underwent signifi cant renovation with the replacement of the bubbles, while the Stueckle Sky Center expansion to Bronco Stadium which was fi nished in 2008. The stadium project includes a new press box, luxury suites, banquet halls, new ticket offi ce, a Bronco Shop, and much more. Seating capacity for football games increased to 33,500. In the summer of 2011, the 10,000-square foot Arguinchona Basketball Complex, including locker rooms, a theater-style fi lm room, lounges and study areas for men's and women's basektball, was completed.

Other future projects include a new outdoor track stadium and practice area; an updated Peterson PRECO Learning Center; a new home for the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame; and expansion of Bronco Stadium.

From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Now in its 13th year, the MW has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics.

The Mountain West has marked several achievements over its fi rst 12 years of existence, most notably becoming the fi rst to establish a sports television network dedicated solely to an intercollegiate athletic conference (The Mtn.). The Mountain West also was the fi rst to experiment with the coaches’ challenge in the college football instant replay system, and was the fi rst non-automatic-qualifying BCS conference to participate in four BCS bowl games, winning three. Additionally, the Mountain West was the fi rst conference to have a member institution with No. 1 overall picks in both the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year (Utah’s Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut, respectively in 2005). With San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg claiming the No. 1 pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the Mountain West is one of two conferences to have the No. 1 selection in each of the NFL, NBA and MLB drafts since the MW was founded in 1999. In 2011-12, the Mountain West will be among the fi rst conferences to implement a league-wide state-of-the art basketball instant replay system.

The Mountain West is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders three MW institutions (Air Force, newest member Boise State and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacifi c Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern fl avor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of TCU.

The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from a former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. TCU re-joined the group with its fi rst year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. Effective July 1, 2011, Boise State University became the newest member. California State University, Fresno and the University of Nevada, Reno will join the Mountain West effective July 1, 2012. Also on July 1, 2012, the University of Hawai‘i will become a football-only member of the Conference.

When the Mountain West offi cially began operations on July 1, 1999, the new league had in place a seven-year contract with ESPN, giving the broadcaster exclusive national television rights to MW football and men’s basketball, and three-year agreements to send the league’s football champion to the Liberty Bowl and a second team to the Las Vegas Bowl. Commissioner Craig Thompson also arranged a third bowl tie-in each of the fi rst three seasons (1999 Motor City, 2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans) before securing a four-year deal with the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco in 2002. Entering the 2011 season, the MW has four contracted bowl affi liations – the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, San Diego Country Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl and Gildan New Mexico Bowl.

An innovator in the postseason bowl structure, the MW engineered many “fi rsts,” as league teams have participated in fi ve inaugural bowl games (2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans, 2002 San Francisco (Emerald), 2005 Poinsettia, 2006 New Mexico), as well as placing the fi rst non-automatic-qualifying BCS team into a BCS bowl game with Utah’s appearance in the 2005 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

The Mountain West Conference does not sponsor competition for the sport of wrestling. As a result, the Bronco wrestling program is entering its 22nd season as an associate member of the Pacifi c-10 Conference for wrestling.

GYMNASTICS

The Mountain West Conference does not sponsor competition for the sport of gymnastics. As a result, the Bronco gymnastics program is entering only its third season as an independent team. The only other seasons they did not have a conference affi liate was in 1988 and 1994.


Craig Thompson was the Mountain West Conference’s fi rst employee when he was named Commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 13th season of competition in 2011-12, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for Mountain West institutions and student-athletes to be successful both academically and athletically.

Since the Mountain West opened its doors on January 4, 1999, Thompson has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW has fl ourished under the guidance of Commissioner Thompson and continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. He has been instrumental in negotiating nearly $230 million in television revenue and has been an innovator in the postseason bowl structure as MW teams have participated in fi ve inaugural bowl games. Thompson also has positioned the Mountain West for the future with the additions of Boise State University on July 1, 2011 and California State University, Fresno and the University of Nevada, Reno on July 1, 2012. The University of Hawai`i will join the league as a football-only member beginning July 1, 2012.

His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS Sports Network and Comcast to become the fi rst major collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its athletic programs, as well as conference news. This vision has guaranteed greater levels of television exposure for all MW sports and has resoundingly met the fundamental goals of preferred start times, competition on select days of the week and enhanced revenue. In the summer of 2006, the centerpiece of this historic relationship was realized with the launch of The Mtn. – MountainWest Sports Network - the fi rst sports network dedicated to serving a single collegiate athletic conference. The Mtn. is jointly owned by CBS Sports Network and Comcast and operated by Comcast SportsNet.

Thompson has been instrumental in strengthening the position of the Mountain West in the current Bowl Championship Series (BCS) structure. In 2006, he spearheaded an effort that resulted in better access for the MW and more than doubled the annual BCS revenue on an annual basis for non-automatic-qualifying conferences. The MW has been steadfast in its efforts to fi nd a way to make the BCS system fair for all universities.

Through its fi rst 12 years of competition, the Mountain West has participated in 46 bowl games. The MW claimed the 2010 Bowl Challenge Cup after sending fi ve teams into postseason action and fi nishing with a 4-1 (.800) mark. It was the fourth time in seven years the MW posted the best win percentage among the 11 FBS conferences. The MW claimed the 2009 and 2007 Challenge Cups after fi nishing both seasons with a 4-1 (.800) records. The league earned its fi rst Cup after registering a 2-1 mark in bowl

competition during the 2004 season. The Mountain West is the only conference to win the Bowl Challenge Cup four times since the award’s inception in 2002.

Prior to his current role, Thompson served as the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for nearly eight years and as the only commissioner of the American South Conference prior to the merger of the two leagues in 1991.

During his eight years at the Sun Belt, he spent the majority of his time addressing national trends and challenges in intercollegiate athletics, television exposure, issues relating to conference membership and promoting corporate involvement. In 1997-98, the Sun Belt instituted a comprehensive sportsmanship policy, which earned Thompson designation as a 1998 Sports Ethics Fellow by the Institute for International Sport. Under Thompson’s leadership, the Sun Belt was active in expansion as it continued to strengthen its posture nationally, adding Florida International University and the University of Denver.

Thompson is an integral part of the national landscape in intercollegiate athletics, holding many prestigious NCAA posts. He is currently on the NCAA Football Board of Directors and a member of the BCS administration. Thompson also is a member of the College Football Offi ciating Board of Managers, LLC, and a consultant for the Task Force on Commercial Activity in Intercollegiate Athletics. He also has served on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee (1995-2000) and was appointed Chair of the committee in July 1999, completing his term September 1, 2000.

Over the tenure of his career, Thompson has been a member of the Executive Committee and the Director’s Cup Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), as well as the governing NCAA Council and various Council subcommittees. He has also played a prominent role in hosting numerous men’s and women’s NCAA postseason basketball tournaments in St. Louis, Atlanta, New Orleans and Denver.

Prior to its merger with the Sun Belt, Thompson served as the fi rst and only commissioner of the American South Conference, which boasted an NCAA national champion in women’s basketball during its fi rst year. The American South also gained immediate national cable television exposure on ESPN and sent numerous teams into NCAA postseason play during the conference’s four-year history.

Preceding his move to commissioner, Thompson served four years as the Director of Communications for the Metro Conference in Atlanta. While at the Metro, he directed the communications operations and administered conference championship events. Thompson originated the Metro Conference Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association, began a weekly radio program with over 300 affi liate stations, and originated a weekly satellite video program involving all Metro institutions. He also took on administrative duties such as coordination of offi cials, scheduling of tournament and regular-season play, and handling of legislative rules interpretations.

Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. Following graduation, he spent two years as assistant sports information director at Kansas State University, earning numerous CoSIDA publication awards. He then spent three years as director of public relations and promotions for the NBA’s Kansas City Kings.

Thompson and his wife, Carla, have a son (Ted) and a daughter (Emma).

COACH SOCHA’S PHILOSOPHY

Head strength and conditioning coach Tim Socha’s philosophy is that student-athletes are not only going to train hard, but that they are going to do the correct exercises that help them excel in their sport. The staff uses variation in the training programs to enhance the student-athletes’ ability to adapt and improve. The variation involves both multi-joint and multi-plane training. Flexibility, core strength and proprioceptive training also is included in all programs. Through all of the training, sport specifi city is emphasized, and the one thing that will never be forgotten is that hard work is what wins championships.

All 19 Boise State varsity athletic teams utilize the strength and conditioning center. Each team has a sport-specifi c program designed to help each student-athlete increase his or her athletic potential and decrease the chance of injury. Boise State coaches take pride in the fact that their student-athletes are some of the best conditioned in the nation. The facility is fully equipped with many different machines, as well as various free weight equipment.


ATHLETIC TRAINING FACILITIESBoise State student-athletes receive top-quality care under the direction of five full-time certifi ed athletic trainers and six graduate assistant athletic trainers who are also certifi ed. In addition, there is a large number of student trainers serving all of the Broncos’ sports medicine needs. Boise State has three fully equipped training rooms at Bronco Stadium, the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex, and at Taco Bell Arena for the convenience of its student-athletes.

Our teams’ doctors are conveniently located on the university campus. The Idaho Sports Medicine Institute (ISMI), established in 1979, is part of the Bronco Stadium complex. The ISMI staff is comprised of board-certifi ed and fellowship trained orthopedic surgeons and family medicine physicians specializing in sports medicine, athletic trainers, physical therapists and an exercise physiologist. Drs. George Wade, Kirk Lewis, Scot Scheffel, Michael Gustavel, Jennifer Miller, Patrick Dawson and Tamara Simpson along with their staff provide specialized care to patients with active lifestyles. ACADEMIC SUPPORT PROGRAMBoise State University and the Department of Athletics are committed to supporting Bronco student-athletes’ pursuit of excellence on and off the fi eld of competition. The Bronco Academic Support Program helps all student-athletes take advantage of the many personal and educational opportunities available at Boise State.

The Bronco Academic Support staff works closely with student-athletes, coaches and the university community to meet the unique educational and personal needs of student-athletes competing at the highest level of college athletics. The Bronco Academic Support staff offers general academic counseling to student-athletes and works on monitoring NCAA, conference and Boise State academic requirements. In addition, the staff works with many university academic resources to implement a wide range of academic support programs to meet the challenge of balancing athletic and academic commitments.

The heart of the Academic Support Program is the Peterson-PRECO Learning Center. Conveniently located on the south side of Taco Bell Arena, this 6,000 square-foot academic facility for student-athletes houses a supervised 24-computer lab, tutorial study rooms, fi ve academic counselors’ offi ces, two large study areas, as well as individual and small group study rooms.

The purpose of the BroncoLIFE program is to provide opportunities that will encourage personal investment and enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience at Boise State University.

regarding resume preparation, job search strategies, interview skills, and graduate school planning

● Programming was provided in collaboration with the BSU Career Center, Varsity B Club and Career Athletes

Community Service● Student-athletes volunteered over 1,500 hours to the community● Events and partnering organizations included Go On, Lift Up

America, Make-A-Wish, reading at local schools, Operation School Bell, Serving Up Wishes, St. Luke's Children's Hospital.


Boise State University is Idaho’s metropolitan research university, located in the state’s main population center and capital city, a hub of government, business, the arts, health care, industry and technology. The campus is the home of 11 Idaho Professor of the Year honorees since 1990, the national award-winning Talking Broncos student debate and speech team and the two-time Tostitos Fiesta Bowl champion Bronco football team. Boise State has the fastest growing research program in Idaho and is the largest university in the state, with an enrollment of 19,993 students.

The university offers more than 165 fi elds of interest. Undergraduate, graduate and technical programs are available in seven colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Education, Engineering, Graduate Studies, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences and Public Affairs. Students also can study abroad, participate in one of the largest internship programs in the Northwest, and work with professors on biomedical research to fi ght cancer, arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease, among others.

Helping the student advance in the classroom, Boise State University guarantees help to keep incoming freshmen on track academically with "Finish in Four," a program to meet their four-year graduation goals.

Campus life offers adventure and activity. More than 200 student organizations, beautiful residence halls along the Boise River Greenbelt and a state-of-the-art Student Recreation Center provide opportunities for both individual development and fun. More than one million visitors come to campus annually for Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning speakers, Bronco football, the Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Celebration and other events. Boise State is located less than an hour from skiing, whitewater rafting and a host of other outdoor recreational opportunities.

Boise State generates $330 million in economic impact on the state in jobs, earnings and sales while educating the work force of tomorrow.

Lyle Smith, long-time football coach and administrator from 1946-81

Dr. Robert Kustra is president of Boise State University, the largest public university in Idaho, with an enrollment of more than 20,000 students served by 2,800 faculty and staff.

Now in his ninth year, he leads the university in a time of dynamic growth in student enrollment, new construction, fundraising and research. Long heralded for its devotion to classroom teaching, Boise State has expanded its mission to become an emerging metropolitan research university of distinction.

His administration has been marked by an emphasis on research, upgrading admissions standards, improving the undergraduate experience, and increasing the number of graduate and doctoral programs, especially in science and engineering. Faculty awards and grants for research at Boise State have nearly tripled during his tenure to $50 million. Dr. Kustra also championed Boise State’s inclusion in the Mountain West Conference this year.

Dr. Kustra led the most ambitious fundraising campaign in university history that reached its goal in 2011. Destination Distinction raised more than $175 million in private support for faculty, student scholarships, programs and campus infrastructure. He is also instrumental in the current fundraising drive to expand seating in Bronco Stadium.

With a long and distinguished career in public service in Illinois, Dr. Kustra served two terms as lieutenant governor, following 10 years in the legislature. He also chaired the Illinois Board of Higher Education, responsible for funding and oversight of the state’s nine public universities.

Prior to joining Boise State, Dr. Kustra served as president of Eastern Kentucky University and the Midwestern Higher Education Commission.

DR. ROBERT W. KUSTRA, Boise State President

He has held faculty positions at the University of Illinois-Springfield, Loyola University of Chicago, the University of Illinois-Chicago, and Northwestern University.

Dr. Kustra represents the Mountain West Conference on the NCAA Board of Directors as well as serving as a member of the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee. He previously represented the Western Athletic Conference on the NCAA Division I executive committee and board of directors. He served on the Presidential Task Force on the Future of Intercollegiate Athletics. He also served as a Governor-appointed Commissioner to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education from 2009-11. In 2007, he was inducted into the Idaho Hall of Fame and was named the Most Infl uential Person in the Treasure Valley by The Idaho Statesman.

Dr. Kustra hosts a weekly radio show, Reader’s Corner, for the National Public Radio affi liate in Boise.

Dr. Kustra holds degrees from Benedictine College and Southern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He and his wife, Kathy, have two grown children, three grandsons, and treasure the memory of their son, Steve.

After being hired as Director of Athletics on December 1, 2011, Mark Coyle offi cially joined Boise State University to lead its 19-sport athletics department on January 5, 2012.

Coyle came to Boise State from the University of Kentucky, where he served as the Deputy Director of Athletics.

In this role, Coyle oversaw the day-to-day operations of an $83 million, self-suffi cient, 22-sport athletics department. He served as the sport administrator for men's basketball and volleyball, and also handled the management of scheduling contracts for football and men's basketball.

While at Kentucky, fundraising reached record levels in annual seat donations and capital pledges, improving facilities for multiple programs, including football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, men's and women's track and fi eld, softball, baseball and rifl e.

During his time at Kentucky, the athletics department's operating budget increased $28 million. Additionally, Coyle oversaw the day-to-day management of the multi-media rights agreement with IMG College, valued at more than $78 million.

Coyle joined the University of Kentucky from the University of Minnesota, where he served nearly four years in a number of capacities, most recently as Associate Athletics Director for External Relations. In this role, he oversaw the corporate sponsorship and suite sales of Gopher Sports Properties, marketing and promotions, athletics communications, video services, the ticket office, licensing and gophersports.com.

As a member of Minnesota's executive management team, Coyle was responsible for assisting with the supervision of the day-to-day operations of the department, including creating and implementing the athletics budget, hiring coaches, administrators and staff.

Prior to joining Minnesota, Coyle was the Vice President of the Collegiate Sports Division at Host Communications, Inc. Coyle helped manage multi-media marketing rights agreements with several Division I universities and conferences, including the University of Kentucky, the University of Texas, Florida State University, the University of Tennessee, the University of Notre Dame and the Southeastern Conference.

Coyle (11/11/68) received his bachelor's degree in English from Drake University in 1991. He earned his master's degree in teaching from Drake University in 1992 and a master's degree in sports administration from Florida State University in 1993.

He is married to Krystan, who is a doctor of physical therapy, and they have three children - Grace, Nicholas and Benjamin.
