MILITARY RESERVE This 460 acre natural area is named for Fort Boise and the associated military maneuvers that were performed here between the 1860’s and 1940’s. The area served several purposes, including the staging of gunnery practice into the hills above. After the military halted its operations, the community recognized the importance of this area and the Boise Front for recreation and wildlife values. Boise City acquired title to the property from the Federal government for “recreation and public purposes”. It is managed as a recreation and wildlife reserve, with human activities allowed in ways that do not detract from the natural values.

CAMELSBACK/HULLS GULCH RESERVE These two city reserves are popular and busy. Hulls Gulch Reserve was spared from development in the early 1990’s with the help of concerned citizens and local and federal funding. With Hulls Creek as the back bone, wildlife fi nd the area to their liking as well. The ponds at the end of 9th St. were designed for fl ood control but also are a magnet for birds and other wildlife. The large pond is fenced to give the wildlife an area that is undisturbed by people and pets. Camels Back is undergoing a “face lift” with restoration efforts. Nearly 3 miles of trail are available on the hill while an effort is underway to close and rehabilitate the steep hill climbs that have been eroding. The two rare plants found in the reserve are also being protected by these efforts.

CASTLE ROCK AND TABLE ROCK RESERVESThese two geological landmarks located near the Old Idaho Penitentiary are steeped in history and beauty. Native Americans consider this area sacred. Native plant populations are found clinging to the slopes around Table Rock, providing a glimpse of what the entire Boise Front may have looked like at one time. Old quarry roads and the Table Rock tram route are now used as trails that provide a wide range of experiences and trail diffi culties. The views aren’t half bad either.

UPPER 8TH STREET TRAILSThe network of trails in the upper 8th Street area were built specifi cally for Off Highway Vehicles, (OHV’s) with access from the 8th Street Parking lot. The Hulls Gulch Interpretive Trail is in this area as well and is a Pedestrian Only trail. With this mix of trail uses it is important to respect others and share the trails.

The 2013 Boise State cross country season is set to begin Sept. 6, under the direction of new head coach Corey Ihmels and his staff.

RANKINGS The Bronco women and men enter the season ranked second and third, respectively, in the 2013 Mountain West Preseason Coaches’ Poll, after placing third and fourth, respectively, in 2012. The Bronco men hold tight to No. 9 in the 2013 USTFCCCA Preseason West Region poll, while the women sit at No. 10, the same positions they held at the end of 2012.

SCHEDULE Boise State will start its season at the Utah Open on Sept. 6 in Salt Lake City’s Murray Park. One week later they will compete at the Roger Curran Invitational (Sept. 14) at West Park in Nampa, Idaho, followed by a second Treasure Valley meet, the Coyote Twilight (Sept. 21) at Caldwell’s Brothers Park.

Moving on to the meat of their season, the Broncos head to Eugene, Ore., to compete in Oregon’s Bill Dellinger Invitational (Oct. 5) at Springfi eld Country Club, followed by the prestigious Pre-National Invitational hosted by Indiana State (Oct. 19) at LaVern Gibson Championship Course.

Postseason begins Nov. 1, heading to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete at the Mountain West Championships. Sacramento State will host the 2013 NCAA West Regional Championships Nov. 15 at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course (Sacramento, Calif.), followed by a return to the LaVern Gibson Championship Course for the NCAA National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., Nov. 23.

THE BRONCOS Ihmels inherits a solid group of student-athletes, including 14 seniors, 10 juniors, six sophomores and 13 freshmen between the men’s and women’s teams.

The Bronco women return two Mountain West All-Conference First Team honorees in senior Tessa Murray and junior Marisa VanderMalle, while returning four-time track and fi eld All-American, Emma Bates, after redshirting the 2012 cross country season.

In addition the Bronco women return a handful of strong seniors in Kate Jette, Lauren Lucas, Erin McLaughlin, Rici Morrill and Taryn Treadway who all ran as part of the team’s top-seven last season.

The Bronco men return 2010 USTFCCCA All-Region honoree, Jeff Howard for his senior season, as well as junior David Elliott, senior Drew O’donoghue-McDonald and senior Allan Schroeder who were key components to last season’s line-up.

On the men’s side, junior Aaron Back and senior Zach Wiles look to continue their important roles as top-seven runners from last season as well.

A strong upper-class will help to guide a talented sophomore and freshman corps for both the men and women, in goals of landing at the top of the conference and developing an NCAA National qualifying program on an annual basis.

Corey Ihmels enters his fi rst season with the Broncos as head coach of the Bronco men’s and women’s track and fi eld and cross country after taking over the position June 14, 2013.

Ihmels had spent his previous 11 years at Iowa State, his alma mater, including the last six as head coach.

With Ihmels at the helm, the Cyclones’ programs have risen to national prominence, fi nishing in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships six times. Of the 21 student-athletes to fi nish in the top fi ve individually at the NCAA Championships under his guidance, six won titles and seven fi nished runner-up.

Additionally, during his tenure, Iowa State has produced 51 NCAA All-Americans. Ihmels was named Big 12 Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year in both 2011 and 2012, after the Cyclones won the conference championship each year, the fi rst such titles in school history. Ihmels is also a three-time Midwest Regional

Cross Country Coach of the Year (2010-12), and was named Midwest Regional Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year in 2010.

In all, 29 Iowa State student-athletes earned Big 12 Conference Championships under his guidance, and 280 earned all-conference recognition. His student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom, garnering 40 Academic All-America awards and 244 Academic All-Big 12 accolades.

Prior to becoming head coach at Iowa State, he served as the head men’s cross country coach and assistant track and fi eld coach for the Cyclones for fi ve years. He joined the Cyclones from Arizona State, where he worked as a graduate assistant coach from 2000-01. Ihmels, a six-time All-American long-distance runner for Iowa State and the 1997 Big 12 Conference Indoor Athlete of the Year, was a member of the Cyclones’ 1994 NCAA championship cross country team.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Iowa State in 1997, and a master’s of education in curriculum and instruction from Arizona State in 2001. He and his wife Michelle have two children, son Wil and daughter Ruby.

Travis Hartke enters his fi rst season with the Broncos as the associate head cross country coach and assistant track and fi eld coach, as well as an operations manager. Hartke took over his position on July 16, 2013.

He comes to Boise State for his sixth season as an NCAA Division I assistant coach after serving fi ve years at Iowa State.

There his duties included assistant distance and cross country coach, meet director for cross country and indoor track and fi eld meets, distance recruiting coordinator and administrative duties. He has also had event management experience working as the Director of Camps for Happy Jack Running LLC; the championship meet director for the Big 12 Conference in 2008, 2010 and 2013; director for the Cyclone Wilderness Cross Country Camp; as well as the 2007 commissioner of the Iowa Games Track and Field Meet. He also aided ISU’s Lisa Koll to a 2007 NCAA championship title, a 2007 American collegiate record and a

2009 NCAA record in the 10000-meters.

Hartke spent time as a student-athlete competing in cross country and track and fi eld at North Central College in Naperville, Ill., while obtaining Bachelor of Arts degrees in physical education and psychology in 2006. In 2008 he added a Master of Science in kinesiology from Iowa State University. The Litchfi eld, Ill., native also holds a USATF Level 1 coaching certifi cation.

2012-13: INDOOR – Ran the 800m in two meets…had a best time of 1:53.74 in the Mountain West (MW) Championships 800m prelims…seventh in the MW 800m fi nals…OUTDOOR – Ran the 400m, 800m and 1500m…had a best of 49.96 in the 400m to place third at the Idaho-Utah Border Clash…had a best of 1:50.45 at the Oregon Relays (3rd place), earning the third-fastest outdoor 800m in school history…won the All-Idaho Cup 800m…sixth at the MW Championships in the 800m.

PARADISE VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE (2010-11) - Ran one season at Paradise Valley Community College...had a best of 1:56.81 in the 800-meters and 2:36.0 in the 1000m...qualifi ed for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships in the 1000-meters and 4x800m relay...ran in the 800m and 4x800m relay at the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships...a member of the seventh-place 4x800-meter relay at the 2010 NJCAA Indoor Championships.
