Laurier’s women’s soccer team entered the season with the OUA 2009 Coach of the Year, Barry MacLean, hoping to capture another national championship.

The start was exactly what they were looking for, a 3-1 win over Waterloo, thanks to first year midfielder Amanda Mithrush who scored two goals along with Kelsey Abbott. The ladies Hawks continued winning, creating a five game winning streak defeating McMaster, Guelph, Brock and York. With many new players, the team solidified great chemistry early in the season. However, their streak was briefly interrupted by the Western Mustangs when neither teams were able score any goals.

Nonetheless, two more wins were rewarded to the Lady Hawks when they were matched once again against Brock and York. Julia Marchese netted two against Brock, along with one goal from Ali McKee, a 2010 OUA First Team All-Star, and Alyssa Lagonia, another 2010 OUA First Team All-Star, started the scoring against York with the game winning goal scored by midfielder Becca Issacs.

The purple and gold recorded their first, and only, loss of the season against Windsor, out shooting the Lancers 8-6 but unable to get any shots pass the Lancers’ goalie. This defeat did not get the ladies down as they came back even stronger against the Western Mustangs whom they tied earlier in the year. With a solid effort from the whole team, Heather Malizia, a 2009 CIS Second Team All-Canadian, scored all three markers for the Hawks. Laurier’s Co-captain, Tania Pedron, also on the 2010 OUA First Team All-Star, set-up Malizia for all three goals. A 0-0 draw occurred for the second time this season, this time against Windsor Lancers who were the only team to defeat the Golden Hawks in regular season. Out shooting the Lancers 17-4, the Hawks just could not seem to sneak any goals pass the Windsor’s goalie.

The Lady Hawks finished their season strong, with a three game winning streak. The start of the streak began with a 2-0 win over Guelph. Julia Marchese started the scoring early followed by Ali McKee. Mallory Woeller received the shutout. The sec-ond match against McMaster resulted in a 3-1 win, with goals scored by Alyssa Lagonia, Heather Malizia, and Ali McKee. The Golden Hawks dominated the game with 18 shots compared to McMaster’s five. The last game of their regular season earned Katrina Ward the 2-0 shutout against Waterloo. Brynn Metherall and Krista Cellucci scored one each; both having the most shots for Laurier with 4 apiece.

Securing a first-round bye, the ladies hosted Western in the quarter-final. The Hawks were first on the scoreboard when Julia Marchese redirected a Heather Malizia shot. The Mustangs would answer the goal just before the break. In the second, Western came back strong, giving themselves a 2-1 advantage. However, Laurier’s team co-captain, Tania Pedron, evened the match two minutes later by sniping the top right corner of the net on a free kick in the 18-yard box.

Nothing was resolved in overtime so the match went to a shoot out. Even on the first three shots, the Mustang’s fourth shot was saved by Mallory Woeller. Malizia then scored to put the Hawks up by one and Woeller solidified the win with one last save. Laurier defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 2-1 in the OUA semifinal to advance to the championship game where they took on the Queen's Gaels. Ali McKee headed in the game winner in the 78th minute to give the Hawks the provincial title, their second in three years.

Golden Hawks Staff

MacLean, who has previously coached both the men's and women's soccer teams, was an All-Canadian for the Golden Hawks men's soccer team in 1985. A former assistant coach to the National Under-20 men's team, Barry returned to Laurier to serve as the assistant coach for the women's soccer team beginning in 1992, when they captured their first National Championship. In 1995, MacLean took over as head coach for the women's team and directed them to their second National Championship title. In 1998, MacLean assumed the role of head coach of both the men's and women's teams, and in 1999, Barry's accomplishments at Laurier were recognized with his induction into the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame. In the 2000 & 2001 seasons, Barry coached the men's soccer team to back-to-back national titles.

BARRY MACLEAN - HEAD COACH

NIKI BUDALIC - ASSISTANT COACHThis is the second year that Budalic has been the assistant coach for the Golden Hawk Women’s Soccer team. A transfer student from NCAA division one power, James Madison, Budalic came to Laurier and instantly became the top goal scorer. His powerful shot helped the Golden Hawks win the 2001 CIS Championship. Budalic was also named on the OUA First Team All-Star in 2001 and 2002. In 2008, Laurier recognized this soccer veteran and inducted him into the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame. His creativity that was instrumental in leading the WLU attack in the early 2000s is now governed towards assisting his former head coach lead the Lady Hawks to victory.

KRISTEN CHALMERS- ASSISTANT COACH

This is the first year that Chalmers has been an assistant coach for the Golden Hawks instead of being on the field. The former midfielder graduated last season. She began playing for Laurier in 2006 and was awarded the Team Rookie of the Year for her amazing efforts and contribution to the team. From there on she continued improving, helping the team achieve the OUA Championship in 2008. Chalmers will now help her old teammates, and a lot of new faces, achieve victory with her former head coach of four years.
