Aquinas College had its origins in the Novitiate Normal School begun by the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids in 1886 in Traverse City. The Novitiate Normal School was transferred to Grand Rapids in 1911, and in 1922 it evolved into Sacred Heart (later Marywood) College.

In 1931, the College was renamed Catholic Junior College. In 1940 the two-year program at CJC was expanded into a four-year bachelor's degree program and the name of the College was changed to Aquinas College.

Aquinas College was originally located in downtown Grand Rapids. In 1945, the college bought the former Lowe Estate on East Fulton Street where it has remained until this day.

In August 2011, Aquinas College will kick off a year's worth of festivities celebrating its 125 years of Catholic Dominican post-secondary education in Michigan.

The celebration of the College's quasquicentennial (125th anniversary) will be highlighted by four signature events that will shine a spotlight on the values that have guided the College throughout its history: prayer, study, service, and community.

The Saints are looking for improvement in just about all aspects of their game and aim to vastly improve on their 2010 record. Head Coach Mark Fales is entering his 8th season at the helm and feels his team has what it takes to improve. The Saints advanced to the league tournament semi-finals with an overtime shootout victory against Madonna and then were beaten by Siena Heights to end the 2010 season. Coach Fales says, “We are pretty healthy right now and we have a talented and deep roster. We are led by some very good senior players and I feel we can go 16 to 18 players deep in our roster. Our goal is to win the WHAC and the post season tournament. The only question we have is weather we have the mental toughness and persistence to stay the course. Our regular season pre-league schedule is a tough one and should help us with that as I believe that great competition will bring out the best in us.” The Saints return outstanding seniors Jaime Tomaszewski and Kelsey Duley. Tomaszewski is an outstanding attacking midfielder and forward with great ball skills and an ability to find the net. “She is the most competitive player on our team and never quits” says Fales. Duley is an outstanding and very dependable goal keeper. “Kelsey is quite mature and does not get rattled. She has made some great saves for us and will continue to do so” Fales insists.

This year’s freshman class is filled with players Fales believes will contribute right away and two of those players are starters already. Maggie Keiffer, a defender/sweeper from Detroit Country Day, “has a motor that just does not quit and runs at high speed. She is a very gifted player that doesn’t mind mixing up a bit”, as Coach Fales puts it. Melissa Hogan, a forward from Coopersville, “is our other first year starter and she has quite a competitive will about her as well. This kid never quits on a ball and just when you think she has she is there to beat you again. There is a lot of fight in Melissa and we look for great things from her.” I am very positive about this year’s team, we have speed, we can score, and we can cover the net. I think our chemistry is good and I think time will tell us that this is a very good team. This is a fun bunch of kids and the addition of our new young coaches has been outstanding. They bring a lot of positive energy to our practices and games. We play on the best field in the conference and the way it is situated on our incredible campus is magic.

Mark Fales

Head Coach Mark Fales is eagerly awaiting the 2011 soccer season and his 8th year directing the women’s soccer program. With over 25 years of coaching, Fales knows what it takes to be a champion. Fales led the Saints to a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) championship in the 2007-08 season, followed by a second place finish two year ‘s ago. He has his sites on being a contender again this season and feels that he has the talent to make a run. Fales shakes his head as he recollects how he became involved in soccer. “There was no soccer being played when I was in high school. I competed in football and wrestling. When my son was five, I became involved with his youth program. I studied the game, went to as many clinics as I could and completed the Youth Sports Institute that Michigan State University offered in 1984. I have always prid-ed myself on being a hard worker and I became very involved in the Lansing area youth club programs.” After coaching a high school All-Star team against a team from France, Fales was offered the boy’s

varsity assistant coaching position at Lansing Eastern High School. After a few years at Lansing Eastern, he was offered the varsity boy’s and girl’s head coaching job at Lansing Catholic High School. Fales went on to coach for 15 years at Lansing Cath-olic High School. In 1995 Fales was offered the head coaching position at Olivet College. The program was in great need of mending and Fales began to build the program. His first team, with no time prior to being hired to re-cruit, ended the season with just 2 wins. The next two years the team played .500 ball and the fourth year won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic As-sociation (MIAA) championship. Those were busy years for Fales, who also continued to coach at Lansing Catholic Central during his year’s at Olivet College. He realized that he needed to spend more time with his family, so he resigned in 2000. It wasn’t long before Fales realized that he missed the day to day contact that goes along with being a coach. Coach Fales was very familiar with Aquinas College, as his son, Zach Fales was a standout goalie for the men’s soccer team. Ironically, former Aquinas head coach Abrahm Shearer had contacted Fales about one of his high school players. Fales says, “The timing was right. I was missing the game and Aquinas College had a coaching vacancy in their women’s program. I had always been so impressed with Aquinas College and after meeting with Athletic Director Terry Bocian, the rest was history. I met with the captains and we hit it off. Aquinas College is a gem in terms of so many facets. The education, the people, the facilities and the support. Grand Rapids is such a vibrant city and Lake Michigan is just a hop away.”

Jeannette Williams (1st year) Assistant Coach Jeannette Williams enters her first year with the AQ Saints. Williams graduated from Robert Morris University in Chicago, IL with a degree in Business Administration. A goalkeeper, Williams finished off her senior year at RMU with14 shutouts and led her team to the NAIA quarterfinals where they were defeated by No. 1 Ranked Lee University. She was two time player of the week in the CCAC and an All-American in the 2010-2011 season. Williams began coaching youth players at the age of 16 with Kentwood Soccer Club in her hometown of Kentwood, MI. She is now very excited to begin a career in coaching with the Saints. "I owe it to the amazing coaches I have had during my playing career. I would like to continue on teaching players what I was taught both on and off the field." This and a deep passion for the sport gives Williams the drive to coach soccer. Williams achieved and was issued a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National 'D' Coaching License in January of this year and is a welcome addition to the Saints.

Connie Rogers (1st year) Assistant Coach Connie Rogers returns to the Aquinas field in her first year of coaching after playing defense for the Saints. An Academic All-American and member of the 2007 WHAC conference championship team, Rogers is eager to provide support and collegiate experience to guide the squad to their own championship. During her playing years at Aquinas, Connie was a captain and standout conference player receiving WHAC All-Conference honors. In 2008, Rogers graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She coached at Forest Hills Eastern at both the junior varsity and varsity level. Rogers is excited to bring her wealth of competitive soccer experience back to her alma mater.
