DAY 1HANOIBe greeted by your personal guide on arrival and transfer to your hotel. Depending on arrival time optional activities can be arranged on this day.

DAY 2HANOI – SAPAEnjoy a guided city tour of Hanoi (celebrating its 1000th year anniversary in 2010), where its rich history will be unraveled and local life revealed. A traditional cyclo tour through the narrow ancient streets of the exotic Old Quarter is also a great

way to soak up the sights and sounds. In the evening board an overnight train to Lao Cai and Sapa near the Chinese border.

DAY 3 SAPA Arrive early in the morning and drive the remaining distance to Sapa. Gentle walks to challenging hikes can be arranged depending on fitness levels. With an expert local guide, navigate small paths through terraced valleys of rice and corn fields, passing by ethnic minority hill tribes ploughing their lands with water buffalo.

The ethnic hill tribes are proud of their culture and still maintain their traditions and way of living, including their own language and intricately embroidered, exotic clothing. In the evening you have the option of staying overnight with a local host family in Ta Van village or returning to the comfort of your hotel in Sapa town.

DAY 4 SAPA – HANOIToday visit the Red Dao people, stopping at a waterfall along the way. The Red Dao women wear colourful red embroidery and coins sewn on their clothing, with giant red scarves wrapped around their heads. Spend the afternoon at leisure in Sapa before returning to Lao Cai to board the overnight sleeper train back to Hanoi.

DAY 5 HANOI – HALONG BAYArrive early into Hanoi and use a day room to shower and freshen up before breakfast. Today you will drive east approximately four hours with your guide to Halong Bay. With more than a thousand limestone peaks rising up from its emerald waters, this area is one of five UNESCO World Heritage sites in Vietnam. Cruise onboard a traditional junk, explore limestone caves, relax on deck, kayak in secluded lagoons and visit local floating fishing villages.

MAI CHAU – AN ALTERNATIVE TO SAPA

A less touristy alternative to the more well known Sapa and only a four hour drive from Hanoi, Mai Chau Valley offers hiking and cycling opportunities through picturesque scenery, jungle covered limestone mountains, waterfalls, markets and many quiet ethnic minority villages.

Mai Chau Lodge is a boutique hotel offering the only accommodation of its kind in the region. The lodge originally opened in 2008 with 16 rooms and provides an outdoor swimming pool, indoor Roman style Jacuzzi and sauna. Plans are in place over the coming year to open an additional six plus deluxe stilt houses with superior interior design, overlooking the rice paddy fields.

A giant stalagmite cave also belongs to the Lodge, where barbeques, cocktail parties, dinners and themed dance performances are held.

Amongst other responsible travel initiatives, Mai Chau Lodge employs its staff from the local ethnic hill tribes, providing them with training and future prospects, in turn supporting the many families in the area.
