1st Reunion 3-6 June 2010

Sixty Seven 87th

APSA members and 29

guests attended the 1st 87

th APSA reunion. The hospi-

tality room was set up in Monks Hall and this is where

people came to meet old comrades and meet new mem-

bers of the association. We shared many memories and

had three reunion dinners. On Thursday night 20 of us

went to the HofBrau Haus. We enjoyed an authentic

German dinner and a few drinks. There were numerous

toasts and several hearty souls did the chicken dance to

live music.

Friday was a busy day with the arrival of many

members and guests. Everyone enjoyed the pictures

and aircraft models that were set up in the hospitality

room. James Hampton displayed an original C-97 Stra-

tofreighter load adjustor which was in mint condition.

Our group of 30 dinned at the Montgomery Inn and en-

joyed an evening out together.

Bob Cepluch managed to keep the original sign from

building 147. The 87th

served in building 147 starting

in 1976. This sign was on display at the entrance to

Monks hall.

Saturday was very busy as the majority of the mem-

bers and guests arrived. The day started out with the

business meeting. We began with the pledge of alle-

giance. Charlie Hampton spoke to the members about

the reasons for starting the association and his apprecia-

tion for the founding members for the key roles they

played in starting up the association. Terry Scott read

the minutes from the last meeting; Bob Cepluch gave

the treasure’s report and addressed old business. Char-

lie Hampton and James Hampton read the constitution.

The By Laws were ready by Charlie Hampton, Terry

Scott, Harvey Hampton, Bob Cepluch, Dave Ludinich,

Tom McVey, Don Newbauer and Paul Webb.

We then opened the floor to proposed changes and

the members voted to incorporate a limit to the amount

of gifts and honorariums. The original constitution and

the modified By Laws were then voted on and adopted

by the members in attendance. A vote for the 1st and

2nd

place Newsletter articles was also conducted.

Trustees, officers and appointed governing members

were voted on. Dave Ludinich was elected as a Vice

President. Keith Bond, Don Fair, Ron Thomas and

Paul Webb were elected as trustees. Bob Cepluch,

Charlie Hampton, Harvey Hampton, James Hampton,

Tom McVey and Terry Scott will continue in their cur-

rent roles. The next reunion will be on 7-10 July, 2011,

at the Hope Hotel at WPAFB. Please mark

your calendars. Everyone then went out to various restaurants to

have lunch with fellow 87th

APS association members.

We all then reassembled back in Monks Hall. Every-

one greeted and mingled with all the reunion members

and drank a few cool ones.

Around 5 PM we began to prepare for the evening

dinner. The Honor Guard and all of the guest speakers

had arrived. The dinner started off at 6 PM with the

Honor Guard posting the colors. The MIA and POW

ceremony was lead by MSgt Mike Bailey. We then

proceeded to enjoy a buffet dinner and opened the cash

bar. Jim Hampton was our MC and Jim introduced the

guest speakers and help in the presentation of awards

and gifts.

Pete Yingling was the

first commander for the

87th

APS. Pete was also

our first guest speaker, he

told us about the early

days of the 87th

. Pete told

us that the 87th

was at one

time an active duty squa-

dron stationed in McCel-

lan AFB in California. Around 1976 the squadron was

transferred to the reserves. Members would join up at

Rickenbacker AFB and then report for duty at Wright

Patterson AFB. The unit worked out of building 147

which was reported to be an old wooden shack located

right next to base Ops.

Major John Marang is the

current commander for the 87th

APS. John became the com-

mander of the 87th

in May 2010.

His father, Richard Marang was

also present. We were all

touched as John told us that his

father was a former aerial por-

ter, who had served in the 40th

MAPS. The 40th

MAPS was merged with the 87th

APS

in 1994. John also gave us an update on the many tasks

and training requirements that the current members of

the 87th

have to now do in order to be ready for wartime

support.

Show on WLW-AM, pre-

sented his slide show

which showed pictures of

the solders whom are now

fighting in Iraq and Afg-

hanistan. Smittle also

touched on the military technology of Net Centric War-

fare, which integrates information gathered from satel-

lites above and from battle commanders on the ground.

. Cross Country Travelers We had a few long distance cross country travelers

come to the 1st reunion. Jeffrey Stamp drove from Rio

Rancho, New Mexico. Per Google maps this is 1,420

miles. Pete Yinging came from Gettysburg, PA, 456

miles. Glen Ruswinkle came from Roswell, GA, 452

miles. I think these travelers came the longest dis-

tances. Congratulations for coming so far to our reu-

nion. We hope you can make it back next year. I hope

that I didn’t miss anyone traveling over 400 miles.

MC Remarks It was a great honor and privilege to have been

asked to MC our first reunion. The dinner ceremony

was, being our first quite long. But we didn’t want to

leave anyone out and needed to cover all the bases.

From our first CO and 1st Sgt to the current CO and 1st

Sgt as well as many others.

The attendance numbers were a little lower than we

expected but that didn’t deter the officers and commit-

tees from forging ahead. We are in the early planning

stages of our next reunion in 2011. In all probability it

will be in the WPAFB area and hopefully on a UTA

weekend. Seeing guys and gals I hadn’t seen in 25

years was just fantastic. Hopefully by the next reunion

we will see a lot more.

Near the end of the reunion you may recall that I got

a little emotional. Looking around the room I spotted

my son Jimmy and his lovely wife Candace. Jim was

an 87th member late 70s/early 80s. And at the same

time for some reason, I thought of my late wife. She

lost her life in a tragic accident in October 1995. Killed

while crossing the street, it was a tragic time for my 8

children and me.

Maybe she was looking down over the reunion and

letting me know she was there. What ever the reason, I

got a lump in my throat and couldn’t speak. Unusual

for me. Once again it was a GREAT honor. Until next

Good times and a few drinks were enjoyed by members and guests in Monks Hall.


We had a buffet dinner, a cash bar, awards and a 50/50 raffle. There were three guest speakers.


A VIEWPOINT FROM A FIRST SERGEANT'S SIDE OF THE DESK

As I look back over my years as 87 APS First Sergeant, I recall what a great squadron it was

and still is. Those were very enlightening years for me and what made them that way was the PEOPLE in the squadron. During my 7 years as First Sergeant, I was very fortunate to have been able to serve in that position for the first three squ-adron commanders: LTC Carl (Pete) Yingling, LTC Donald Stallard and LTC Karl Schultz. All of the officers and enlisted were very special people. I noticed when I first joined the 87th in 1979 that all personnel were professional people. They wanted to be there! With very few excep-tions, there were no serious discipline problems. Given the number of personnel we had, that was an amazing fact. Sure, we had the occasional is-sues, but those problems were easily resolved. I can honestly say we had excellent mid level team chiefs and our senior leadership was always oper-ating in a mission with safety first mode. I don't recall much grumbling as sections were charged with performing the tasks assigned to them. When new members arrived, they were as-signed to a team chief and were soon working with their team as if they had been a part of it all along. What camaraderie we had! Our senior NCOs were well suited in their duties and could take a team of people anywhere and accomplish the tasks assigned. When a team came home, there was always a letter of commendation to follow from that faraway station. The world was aware of the 87th APS! I was very humbled and at the same time, very proud to be an 87 APS First Sergeant and I feel that each First Sergeant before and after me felt the same way. The First Sergeant position is not a popularity contest. Sometimes decisions had to be made that were based on completion of our

mission. I liked and respected every member of our great squadron equally. I still today talk of all 87th members with fond memories.

In summary, when I attended the First Ser-geant Academy, I can remember going into the building and seeing a big poster saying, simply:

I AM A FIRST SERGEANT

MY JOB IS PEOPLE EVERYONE IS MY BUSINESS

I know I and all other 87 APS First Sergeants feel that way.

We are planning a grill out for the

87th

APS guys and gals. We will be

serving burgers and hot dogs for

lunch.

Newsletter History In September, 2009, we established our newsletter

in order to communicate with members and to help

with membership drives. We reprint stories that we

receive from our members and publish our lists of

members.

In May 2010, we voted on the official name for

the newsletter. After two rounds we agreed upon the

87th

APSA News ‘N Views.

Votes for the top two articles were collected dur-

ing the business meeting on Saturday, 5 June, 2010.

Harvey Hampton won first prize and was presented

the rooster award. Harvey promised to return the

rooster to the next reunion so it can be a traditional

gift which will be presented at the next reunion. We

hear that Nancy is anxious for the next reunion and is

looking forward to having the rooster out of her

house. Hang in their Harvey, only 10 months to the

next reunion.

Presidents Message In March of 2009 Harvey and I walked in to the

Drawbridge Inn and told them we wanted to schedule

a Military Reunion. She said great how many people

are you expecting and I said 300. She said you don’t

know what your doing do you and I said no I don’t.

She said let’s start with 14 people. One hour later

we left the Hotel with a date and a contract for the

reunion and we hadn’t contacted one person. Our

work was cut out for us. We had fourteen months to

get this thing together. We soon enlisted help from

Jim Hampton, Bob Cepluch, Terry Scott and Tom

McVey and we were off and running.

I am happy to report to the membership that our

total attendance was 96 people. A far piece from my

original 300 but much better than 14. The reunion

was a great event and we want to thank all of you that

attended and made our first reunion a great success.

Everyone there had a wonderful time renewing old

friendships, laughing, golfing, socializing or just re-

miniscing. Our attendees stayed at the Drawbridge

Inn more than 50 room nights in total so the Associa-

tion was presented a $250.00 check from the North-

ern Kentucky Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. We

were surprised but happily accepted the check on be-

half of our members.

We also conducted the first business meeting of

the Association and held elections for Officers and

Trustees. I was elected President and wish to thank

the members that were present for the faith and con-

fidence in me to fill this position. Please know that

the business of the Association will always be con-

ducted with the best interests of our members as first

priority. I also want to thank the Officers and Trus-

tees that were elected and installed into their respec-

tive offices. Visit our web site to view the elected and

appointed officers and be sure to thank them for fill-

ing these positions.

We have many exciting things to plan and organ-

ize and you will be notified when we have more de-

tails. Committee assignments are being made. Jim

Hampton has agreed to be Chairman of the reunion

committee. Jim has already started planning the reu-

nion for next year and he may be calling on some of

you to help on this committee. Organizing a reunion

is a lot of work and Jim will appreciate your assis-

tance. The next reunion will be at the Hope Hotel on

7-8 July 2011. I asked Tom McVey to be Chairman

of the membership committee and he has agreed.

Tom will need help with this committee and may be

calling on some of you also. Contacting past mem-

bers of the 87th APS is where our membership comes

from so please help and spread the word. We cur-

rently have 90 members and would like to add 50 to

that number before the next reunion.
