Avoca Beach 2015/2016

As we present Avoca Beach Annual report for 2015/2016 I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate club members Lachlan Tame and Riley Fitzsimmons on being selected in the Olympic Team to compete in Rio. This is an outstanding effort and we wish them every success.

On the beach this season we had a very busy time with a number of outstanding rescues and first aid situations dealt with. I would like to thank the Patrol Captains and the patrolling members for their vigilance in this area. It was good to see a number of members get involved in undertaking courses to upskill themselves, a factor that certainly assisted in a few of the major first aid incidents.

Congratulations to Nigel Ball on being named Jim Harpur Patrolman of the Year. He continues to donate his time and effort to ensure the safety of the public at Avoca Beach.

Avoca Beach Surf Club thanks sponsors for their support and we look forward to continued associations with them. Raine and Horne continue to support our Boat Section with the addition of Thompson Clarke Shipping Pty Ltd and Light Culture. Due to poor weather The Rocks to Rocks was postponed to early next season but Mark and Evette Moran are continuing their support. Avoca Dental’s support of Juniors continues and this year we welcome on as a Gold sponsor Avoca Beach Hotel & Resort.

Wyong Leagues Group’s ongoing support allows us to maintain our education programs and assists with vital First Aid Equipment. Also supporting as a gold sponsor is Kincumber Nautical Village aiding our successful ski group. Our silver and bronze sponsors continue to be valuable contributors to our club and those listed in our Annual Report are thanked for their support.

We acknowledge the help of Gosford Council, now Central Coast Council, for their ongoing support of Surf Life Saving on the coast. We assist council through provision of maintenance and painting of our facility in an effort to reduce burdens upon the sinking funds. This year we

replaced roller doors and the kitchen floor to assist. DHL and Surf Life Saving Australia have provided funds to support the club and Central Coast Branch continues to maintain their support of all clubs through funding and programs.

The past year has been difficult for the function team but they continually work hard to look for opportunities to support the club. Thanks go to Nicky Ford, Dave McAlpine, Kylie Hoban, Jack Leary, Deb Rendall and Hallie Bradbury for their assistance in this regard.

In surf sports we again had success but were restricted by some injuries and Olympic Trials in always putting our best teams forward. We won Branch in Nippers and Masters and were in the top 3 in opens. Our 17 years age group was again outstanding with great results at State and National titles and except for some bad luck could have come home with many more medals. It was fantastic to see Sam and Fletcher continue our dominance in winning the U19 double ski at Aussies and Finn Flaherty again have an outstanding titles. Well done also to our newest Honour Blazer recipients Eden, Levi and Fletcher on winning Gold at Aussies.

While our master’s contingent was smaller this year there were some notable performances with Sharon Brierty, Dave O’Grady and Dave Broadbent being the pick in the surf. In the boat area our Zuluz were outstanding, winning at all levels of competition this year. There were numerous outstanding efforts at all levels of competition and this is noted later in our Annual Report. Thanks to Damien Benson for his leadership in this area.

The Avoca Beach Executive has once again been very proactive and supportive this year. I thank Roger for the implementation of some financial procedures that will help move us forward. Deb has once again been invaluable in not only her Directorship but in assisting Dave with the functions arm of the club. Julie has moved forward within the sponsorship role while Brett has kept us current in lifesaving.

Kylie continues her administrative efforts in keeping members informed through the Shark Attack and the

efforts of Emma as bookkeeper has ensured a stable financial platform.

We continued with usual fundraising ventures again that provided the basis for raising funds. The Lizards were major supporters of the doorknock, once again coordinated by Jim. Glenn and Keith organised a successful golf day that was well supported by club members. The change in Golf Day to support Wyong Leagues was a positive step.

Bob Burns has kept the gym functioning well and we continue to look for improvements in this area. Special thanks also to Bob Dorrell, Duncan Smith, Gordo and Rob Hurrell who assisted in a number of installation and maintenance tasks around the club. Sandy Cooper continues to be a major asset with his technical expertise and assistance to the club.

In instruction and assessing: Mick Kendal, Andy Hoban, Jeff Barnes, Craig Anderson, Sharon Brierty, Andrew Duerdan and Garry Clarke have been the people supporting the development of lifesaving.

The coaches and officials continue to support our athletes with their efforts throughout the year, while The Ladies Auxiliary have once again been there to help raise funds and cater at events we run.

Nippers remain a strong and successful group with another top placing at the State titles evidence of the efforts of many of the parents, coaches and managers. Matt has coordinated a strong team to develop the youth of the area.

Congratulations to all awardees at Club, Branch and State level. Thanks to all those that have been committed to moving the club forward over the past year.

Garry Clarke, President – Avoca Beach SLSC

Director oF aDMiniStrationAnother year finished with many trials and tribulations, great memories and achievements. Thank you to all club members for their efforts patrolling the beach this season, our members behind the scenes and our competitors.

Fantastic results at Branch, State and Aussies for all of our competitors. Our Nippers also had a fantastic year and our senior ranks are looking good for the future.

Thank you to our Ladies Auxiliary who continue to raise much needed funds for our lifesaving equipment.

Congratulations to Lachlan Tame and Riley Fitzsimmons for making the Olympic team for Rio this year. For me personally to have known you guys since you were in Nippers and to progress to being selected for the Olympic Games makes me feel really proud. I know that the whole club is behind you 100% and the buzz around the club is amazing, we all cannot wait to be watching you both compete and do your country proud. To the Tame and Fitzsimmons families enjoy this fantastic time.

Thank you to Kylie for your continued efforts again this season. The strong administrative position of the club is thanks to you. We all know that you have a paid position but you also put in many volunteer hours which are very much appreciated.

Thanks also to some behind the scene workers, Anita Jung, Emma Benson and Sam Jefferies, always there to lend a hand when needed.

To my fellow board members, thank you for another rewarding and enjoyable season. The Club could not function without your efforts and dedication. Special mention again to Garry Clarke, your tireless commitment to the Club is appreciated.

Cheers boys and girls, Deb Rendall, Director of Administration – Avoca Beach SLSC

It’s hard to believe another season has come and gone already. This year was possibly one of our biggest seasons with significant rescues, major first aids and shark sightings.

We started off the pre-season with the yearly Branch Lifesaving Conference. I would encourage any patrol member to attend these conferences each pre-season. This year was hard to top last years Guest speaker Trevor Hendy, but with many shark attacks along the NSW coast, our guest speaker was Barry Bruce, the CSIRO Shark expert. The data and misconceptions around shark behaviour and shark attacks had everyone glued to every word and slide/video shown. Truly a remarkable presentation by Barry.

Our off season is supposed to be a time to relax, enjoy other pursuits and have a break from lifesaving. Unfortunately though, people still get in trouble and require help, and I thank all those people who made themselves available on the clubs emergency callout list and who responded to taskings by NSW Police. One significant rescue was a few weeks prior to the season involving another rock fisherman on Fathers Day. Club members prepared the IRB and RWC for the responding members, with myself and crewman, Byron Chadwick raced to Winnie Bay on the jetski expecting to find another drowned fisherman. On arrival we found an Asian fisherman with a lifejacket (which saved his life) and holding a large Dolphin Fish. With a strong southerly and large swell we managed to get close enough for Byron to get the fisherman on board, untangle him from fishing line and return him to awaiting Ambulance at Copa. It was a very dangerous rescue so close to rocks and won the NSW Rescue of the Month. Thanks to all those members who were involved in some way towards the successful response and rescue.

Our core business is lifesaving, and it’s why this club exists today, and will continue to exist. But unfortunately it is at risk. As an active member, your commitment as an active member is to attend patrols, rostered patrols (unless prior arrangements made to be static). By not turning up

or getting a substitute for your patrol, places huge stress on the remaining members. Patrols are divided up with varying skillsets. If members don’t turn up we then risk being non-compliant with SLSNSW and place the public at risk by not having enough skilled lifesavers on patrol. For a club our size, the ratio of members who don’t turn up or get a substitute is extremely disappointing. Without the huge sacrifice of dedicated members volunteering extra additional hours, we simply would have had to close the beach on several occasions. For this reason, next season will see members advised they are in breach of their membership and risk being stood down if they miss two consecutive patrols.

With an aging patrol membership, predominately masters, it’s time the younger members (20-30yrs) stood up and took on some leadership roles on patrol. I am more than happy to help any member gain the awards required to become a vice captain or a patrol captain. This year we had Rochelle Duerden take on Patrol Captain and mentored by David O’Grady. Rochelle did an amazing job and earnt the respect from her patrol team. You’re never too young.

It was a busy season again, with some good swells, some bad bluebottle days and generally very busy beaches throughout summer. Australia Day was a day many members from the Parker and Penn Patrols will never forget. Around 1pm at the changeover of patrols, a visiting family from Sydney (about 20 in all) was around the rocks near the mermaid pools enjoying a nice day. Unfortunately a large swell arrived unannounced washing over 20 people across the rock platform injuring nearly all the tourists. With major breaks, concussion, cuts and abrasions, the bottom carpark resembled a war zone as injured bleeding people lay awaiting a fleet of 5 ambulances. The rookies were amazing, they comforted the injured, attended to the minor wounds whilst the senior members attended the injured and awaited the Ambulances. The incident won SLSNSW Rescue of the Month and the family were so grateful they donated $500 to the club. A great team effort by both the patrols, who still had to manage the patrons on the beach.

A very busy day for Avoca SLSC.

This season the club completed an amazing 7,147 patrol hours for the season, with 210 rescues, 2,843 preventative actions and 312 first aids cases. It was very pleasing to see some of our bright young competitors also contributing significantly to patrol hours. Special mention to Byron Chadwick 80.25hrs, Austin McAlpine 80hrs and Jordan Butler 76.5hrs. These young members stepped up on many occasions to help out when patrols were light on. Not to forget our club mainstays, who without their dedication to our club would have meant patrol breaches and risk to our clubs competition rights. Special thanks must go to Alan Moffitt 89.25hrs (and also patrols for Ocean Beach!), Sandy Cooper 79.25hrs, David O’Grady 75.25hrs, Nigel Ball 72.75hrs, Garry Clarke 67.75hrs. A special mention also to the Benson family who stayed back Christmas Day to keep our beach open, and everyone else who gave up some of their Christmas Day to patrol. A huge thank you. In total we had 23 members complete over 50 patrol hours which is an amazing effort.

It takes a lot of time and effort by the board and its sub committees to ensure the successful running of any club. To my fellow executive members, thankyou and your family, for the time you commit to our club. To the lifesaving board, Craig Anderson (Education), Karen Douglas (First Aid), David Babbage and Richard Green (I.R.B) and Sandy Cooper (Vice Captain), thank you all for keeping the lifesaving section running so smoothly. Your time is all valuable and you all contributed many additional hours to ensure our club has the best resources available. Much work is done behind the scenes by our administrator Kylie Hoban. Kylie has provided great support to our members and the lifesaving team with regular correspondence, SMS messages for patrols and the Shark Attack newsletter. Thanks Kylie, you’re a gem.

Club security remains a problem and we the members need to make an effort to shut the club up after we finish accessing it for equipment when training etc. This season we have had fuel stolen on at least 2 occasions because

the boat and ski sheds have been left open. There have been nights where the club is wide open at 9pm. We all have an invested interest to ensure the club is secure. Many private craft are stored, vital rescue equipment etc. which could easily be vandalised or stolen if the club is left open. The caretaker Richard has done an amazing job, but he can’t do it alone. We have also installed CCTV cameras in certain areas to help with club and member security. Please assist the executive in doing your small part to keep our club secure and shut the roller doors after you have removed or returned your equipment.

Finally, special thanks to my family, especially my wife Leanne for putting up with all the meetings, courses and lifesaving commitments I need to attend in my role at Club, Branch and State.

Cheers Boys & Girls, see you back on the beach soon.

Gordon joined Avoca Beach Club Nippers as a 3 year old in the 1979/1980 season and has continued active membership up until the present time.

He went right through the Nippers until a 13 year old and won the age point score every year competing at all carnivals and at Branch and State level each season achieving great results.

He continued his interest in the Nippers by being an Age Manager for the 7 years age group starting Daniel Shade off with his competitive career.

He gained his Surf Life Saving Certificate in 1989 and his Bronze in 1991. He also holds numerous other awards including ARC, First Aid, IRB Drivers, Jetski Drivers and has his Officials and Coaches Accreditation.

Over the years as a Patrol Member and Captain he has been involved in many rescues and has been a Lifeguard for over 20 years making him one of the most experienced patrol people in our Club.

He has also been involved in the Administrative area of the Club taking on several positions on the Committee, Director of Competition, Director of Finance and Carnival Entries Officer.

Gordon is also a willing worker and helper around the Club being the mainstay in the gym extensions and the new ski racks.

Gordon is a great mentor and coach to all our members, especially our younger members.

As a senior competitor Gordon started in the Cadet Board Riding Display in Perth coming 4th. Over the years he has won many Branch titles in Open Belt, Surf Teams, Ski Relay, Board Rescue and Board Display.

At State level he has been successful in gaining a 2nd in the Open Belt, winning a Double Ski and numerous placings in Ski Relays. At the Australian level he won an Open Double Ski, Open Ski Relay, 4th in the Open Belt and at World level he came 1st in the Masters Ski Relay and 4th in the Masters Single Ski.

Over the years Gordon has entertained our members with his alter egos journalist and social commentator Ray Smith and surfer still trying to make the main event Rudi Zarrzoff.

He is totally committed to Surf Life Saving and in particular to Avoca Beach SLSC and his enthusiasm and mateship has created a great culture within our competitor ranks.

FinanciaL report For the year ended 30 april 2016

Director of Finance reportThe financial position of the club has strengthened with a surplus of $81,017, and increases in total current assets to $276,494 and members’ funds from $520,398 to $601,415.

The numbers reflect the positive cash flows from both commercial and member activities and ongoing investment in assets that support our members in competition and lifesaving activities. Notable asset purchases include new roller doors, surf boat and rowing equipment, skis and boards. The effort of members in raising funds and the contribution of sponsors to the purchase of this equipment is acknowledged. A Sport NSW grant enabled the purchase of mobi mats and beach wheelchairs that have improved access to the beach by disabled visitors.

The Jaws restaurant and bar income has been a major contributor to the increased profitability of the club over the past two years, accounting for approximately one third of total income. Income from the function centre which was almost fully booked in the first two years of operation (2008-2009) has declined from a reported peak of $150,124 in 2012 to $63,168 this year. This is expected to turn around with a change in management and increased bookings for the coming year. The cafe and kiosk continue to provide a reliable source of income. The total of non-employment expenses is the lowest for five years while employment expenses have increased from $43,282 in 2014 to $130,624 this year reflecting the increased commercial activity.

It is a privilege to serve this club as a volunteer. The business of running a surf club is complex with a mix of commercial and volunteer activities, changing regulations and government policy and technology. My main focus as incoming treasurer has been to review all aspects of the financial systems including the accounting software, bank accounts and financial services and prepare accurate budgets for the commercial entities. Changing from MYOB to Xero will enable integration with a range of online services including invoicing and point of sale systems to streamline and automate financial reporting and budgeting. All Directors now have direct access to the accounts and Xero’s detailed management reports.

This year we welcome Fortunity who by arrangement with Branch will offer pro-bono support as auditor and accountant to all clubs and we thank John Cheadle for his past support as auditor. Special thanks to Emma Denniss and Kylie Hoban for their bookkeeping and administrative support; Gordon Croker for the success of Jaws; Nicky Ford for driving functions bookings, Hallie Bradbury as bar manager; members of the executive over successive years whose decisions are reflected in the positive result; Deb Rendall who has taken on the critical role of licensee and Garry Clarke who as President provides inspiration in his tireless dedication to maintaining the smooth operation of all functions of the club.

The tradition continues, well done to all our competitors this season. For Avoca to continue into the future we still need volunteers. The club doesn’t function without these amazing people. For the past ten years the surf lifesaving movement have set competition requirements to fulfil at State and Australian titles – IRB and official shifts. On top of these requirements there are the placement of tents and the towing of gear trailers, all these requirements are for our kids to race, the end result of a seasons hard training. So in the future please step in and help where you can, don't just rely on other people to do these jobs. Many hands make light work!

So in saying this, I would like to thank the following people:

Gear Steward – Thanks to Trevor Tame for making sure the Gear trailers are road worthy. Thanks to Bobby Dorrell and Trevor Tame for making the new gear trailer for the skis.

Gear Trailers – Thanks to Barb and Richard Livingstone, Paul and Karen Hutchinson, Dave and Fiona Broadbent, Jeff and Nikki Beere and Greg and Lisa Flaherty for towing the gear trailers to Aussies.

State IRB Crew – Trevor Tame, Steve Jung, Phil Ayres, Jeff Beere and Alan Moffit.

Also, thanks to the Assistant Managers at State and Aussies – Nic Douch, Barb Livingstone, Sharon Brierty and Kellie Hayes.

eDUcation oFFicer reportAnother great year for the club with awards in various areas with thanks to our great team of trainers, assessors and facilitators. Great to see our nipper parents getting so involved with upskilling beyond the bronze medallion.

Plenty of young club members also on board this season gaining their bronze medallion.

A huge thank you to our training team: Mick Kendal, Andy Hoban, Sharon Brierty, Garry Clarke, Jeff Barnes and Craig Anderson.

These club members give so much time season after season and are part of the reason ABSLSC is such a great club.

It would be great to see some new trainers come on board to lighten the load on our trainers. This season once again we had people wanting to do a bronze medallion course with no trainers available, so come on guys do a Training Officers course during the off season and let’s get the next season off to a flying start.

Thanks to all the staff behind the bar and in the kitchen that have helped make this possible. We hope that members and their guests, visitors and their families continue to support both Jaws and Sippers so that we can maintain these services to the club.

Our function/wedding bookings have dropped slightly this financial year, and as a result we have undergone some changes. We welcome back Nicky to lead our functions team and have recently seen an increase in the interest of Avoca Beach Surf Club, which will again take us back to being one of the Coast’s top function venues. This vital component of the club continues to be a great source of income.

We welcome and are very grateful to have the services of a new caretaker, Richard Hoare. You will often see Richard around the club mornings and evenings, he is doing a great job keeping the place clean and tidy, as well as carrying out some of our maintenance projects.

SpeciaL eVentS 2016Once again our Door Knock was a major success and we thank Jim McAtamney and Garry Clarke for organising this event. This year the fundraising brought in just over $14,500. Thanks also goes out to all members that contributed to its success, in particular The Lizards and Masters Groups who raised considerable amounts for the club.

The Golf Day was once again organised by Glenn O’Brien and Keith Ferrier. It was a very enjoyable day that was supported by Wyong Leagues Group. It was a pity that most of the players were from outside the club and we hope that more members can support this event next year.

We also had two band nights, organised by Kylie Hoban and Deb Rendall. While the first was not well supported, the second was a great success and hopefully we can add others to the calendar in the near future.

HoUSe coMMittee reportOur Bar and Jaws Bistro has continued to trade soundly as highlighted in the financial report this year.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Rod Butler, Rod was the creator and had the vision for the concept of Jaws, he has been a great loss for the club, for he was not just our licencee, he also played a huge role in the overall running of the function sector of the Club. Rod did an outstanding job with initiating the concept of Jaws, we wish him well.

The club has been very fortunate however to have gained the services of Deb Rendall as the new licencee this year. Deb is well known to us all and has been an exceptional club member for many years, holding many vital executive positions. Deb and her team are doing a great job.

Jaws continues to provide members and guests with greater access to our club and at the same time assists us with an excellent source of income to help meet the costs of running and maintaining the premises. The club is very fortunate and thanks must go to Gordon Crocker for his continued commitment to the Bistro, not only providing great value meals but also creating part time jobs for some of our junior members.

Page 22

Bar & FUnction reportThank you to everyone who assists with the functions and bar. Special thanks to our functions coordinator Nicky Ford and the team who assist with the wedding/functions. Avoca Beach Surf Club is still one of the premier venues on the Central Coast with bookings still strong. Other community groups also use the facility on a regular basis.

Jaws Bistro is going strong and is very popular with members, who would not want to sit on the veranda during summer in the afternoon and have that view. Sunday Sippers was popular this season with Kylie providing the food, those much loved burgers were certainly a hit and with drinks for members, at members prices, where else would you want to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Thank you to the bar managers for the last year, Deb Callaghan, Stephanie Rendall and Hallie Bradbury, the bar continues to run smoothly under your guidance. Thank you to everyone who has worked the bar for Jaws, we have a great team who are committed to providing great service to not only members but the public as well. Thank you to everyone who has stepped in to assist when we have been swamped over the last year.

Thank you to all the members who have supported Sunday Sippers and Jaws Bistro over the last season and we look forward to your continued support.

BoarD reportAs the announcer said at The Aussies – the Tradition of the Avoca board paddlers continues. To hear that over the speaker was very humbling knowing that Avoca is a very proud craft club. To be a part of the tradition in my 16th season as board coach is to say the least overwhelming. I look back at the greats in board paddling at Avoca knowing the likes of our youth and opens are still flying the Avoca flag HIGH!

The results this season show the depth, dedication and commitment that all the kids have given to their sport, their club, themselves and their families.

Aussie Titles

Aussies Youth – To go back to back in the under 15 boys Board Relay with three different young men this season was out of this world. Finn Flaherty, Eden McQueen and

Levi Kasun took gold in some sloppy south swell. The board final was just as exciting with all three boys making this final – the final result Eden bronze and Finn 5th. To win one gold medal at an Australian championships is an amazing achievement but Finn and Levi took out the U15 boys board rescue – this was Levi’s 1st ever Aussie Championships and he won 2 gold medals! Charlie Jeffries and Austin McAlpine also made the board rescue final and took out 5th place, this is a fantastic achievement. Finn and Austin also qualified for the U15 boys ironman final, with Finn finishing in the same position he did last year – 2nd, Finn finished 2nd to the same competitor from last year – you will get him next year Finn!

Other great results at the Youth were Eliza Giles making the U15 girls board final and then backing up with Willa Harvey and Taylor Bateman in the U15 girls board relay, finishing 10th.

Great results continued from the Youth into the U17, U19 and Open competition. Lily Cracknell, Emma Livingstone and Keeley Booth winning bronze in the U17 girls board relay plus a silver in the taplin relay. The U17 boys board relay of Beau Jeffries, Kane Douch and Byron Chadwick finished 6th in the final. The U19 girls consisting of Bridget Brosnan, Mya Harvey (U17) and Meg Matuschka (U17) qualified for the board relay final, as well as the taplin final – Bridget Brosnan, Ella Beere and Mya Harvey (U17). Individual board results were fantastic – Emma Livingstone and Lily Cracknell qualifying for the U17 board final with Lily finishing in 4th. Byron Chadwick qualified for the U17 boys board final and finished 6th.

State Titles

Leading into state the board squad were feeling confident, each and every one of them should be very happy with their results. Starting with our youth, these kids where outstanding. Both U14 boys (Jordan Butler, Matty Williams and Fletcher Armstrong) and girls (Zoe Clarke, Emily Benson and Willa Harvey) finished with a 2nd in their board relays. U15 boys finished 3rd with Finn Flaherty,

Thanks Beno, Board and Ironman Coach – Avoca Beach SLSC

BoarD report cont.Austin McAlpine and Levi Kasun, these same boys teamed up with the ever reliable Charlie Jeffries to win a bronze medal in the cameron relay. The U15 girls of Eliza Giles, Scout Walker and Taylor Bateman qualified for their board relay final, the U14 girls team of Zoe, Emily and Willa stepped up into the U15’s at State and also qualified for the U15 board relay final.

Individually Finn Flaherty was the stand out, winning the U15 ironman and 2nd in the board. Lily Cracknell claimed silver in the U17 ironperson. In the U17 area the board relays also had great success – U17 boys Beau Jeffries, Kane Douch and Byron Chadwick winning gold while the girls team of Emma Livingstone, Lily Cracknell and Meg Matuschka winning the silver medal. Emma and Lily teamed up with Keeley to finish with bronze in the taplin relay.

Individual board results – U14 boys all three boys (Jordan, Matty and Fletcher) made the board final with Jordy Butler in a monster effort finished 5th. Our U14 girls saw Zoe and Willa making the board final. Our U15 board finalists included Eliza and Levi, U17 boys Kane and Byron, U17 girls Lily and Emma.

The U17 boys taplin relay finished with a respectful 6th in the final – Beau Jeffries, Byron Chadwick and Nick Duell-Ferguson. Our U19’s excelled also – Bridget Brosnan qualified for the board and ironman finals, racing extremely well. Bridget then teamed up with two U17 girls Mya Harvey and Keeley Booth qualifying for the U19 board relay final.

Now our Open’s, well unfortunately leading into state injuries hit us hard resulting in most of them not being able to compete on the board until Aussies or worst not at all.

Other Special Events

Our new boat named the Johnny Mitchell was christened Easter Saturday 26th March 2016 in lovely weather conditions. Nathan Perry, the boat builder and his family and the Mitchell Clan minus a few with the Matriarch Nance Mitchell (who is 96) were in attendance. Master of Ceremonies Michael Tamblyn and President Garry Clarke along with many members made it a very memorable day. The boat has a purple stern for epilepsy awareness whom Maddison Mitchell is a sufferer. Maddi and Poppy John

both cut the ribbon together to crack the champagne over the boat.

Manning River Row and camp Howard Crokers a 50km row from Wingham Brush, lunch stop in Taree and then a row to Crokers near Old Bar…a fun weekend was had by all! The conditions were no entry fee, each crew must perform an act, poem or song around the camp fire on Saturday night.

Congratulations to Boaties of the Year – Brad Mitchell and Tabitha Raley. It was very hard to pick amongst so many close competitors, so a big thanks to Stan Priestly.

It is my 51st year with the Club and I am still loving it.

GYM reportAnother great year in and out of the club with all its members…A HUGE congratulations to everyone involved.

On the gym front the long awaited extensions are complete giving us much needed room with a growing club and home to new equipment that was kindly donated to the ABSLSC by Fitness First.

A new toggle swipe system was also installed to keep it OUR…it’s club GYM MEMBERS’ gym safer, secure to its users and making sure the gym was ONLY being used by its financial members.

As the club develops, the gym wants to strengthen and grow with all its members, in doing this we would like to know how and what changes we can make in the gym with its equipment.

So remember the gym is there for you…PLEASE look after it and yourself. Keep it safe and also tidy, PUMP UP. Hahahaha, next year season is just around the corner. 🏻

SKi reportAvoca Ski paddlers once again had a standout year with some great results for Avoca Beach surf club.

This season we had a large number of up and coming young ski paddlers in the club and they are all achieving fantastic results across all arenas of competition. None of these young clubbies could have been achieving and producing great results without the dedicated coaches and trainers who give up countless hours writing programs, standing on the beach and out in the water coaching in all types of weather, to ensure that all the competitors are given every chance of success. So to Richard Brierty, Norbs and Fez a very big thanks from us all.

The first major competition for the year started well for the open competitors at the Branch titles held at The Lakes Beach. The open guys dominated the single ski races with Ben, Brad, Pete, Gordo and Jack (coming out of retirement) taking the top places in the singles, doubles and relays, but most importantly the up and coming young ski paddlers (Keeley, Emma, Mya, Meg, Ella, Lily, Sam, Byron, Fletcher, Harry and Beau) being coached and encouraged by Richard, all performed fantastically for top places in their events.

State was contested once again at Umina in small surf and sunshine so it showed all our competitors skills and fitness. Finals day got underway with nearly all our competitors making the semis and finals. The Opens had a good carnival with Loccy, Riley, Pete, Rob, Gordo, Trent, Ben, Ella and Kaitlyn all performing well in their respective heats and finals. Keeley and Ella 4th and 5th in the open ski, Emma, Kaitlyn and Ella 2nd in the open ski relay, Kaitlyn and Ella 2nd open double, Kaitlyn and Loccy 3rd in the mixed double, Beau 1st U17 ski, Sam and Fletch 2nd U19 double, Sam 4th U19 ski and Emma 3rd U17 ski. A great result for the ski paddlers in the state competition.

Mooloolaba in Queensland proved to be a challenging and successful Aussie carnival this year with some outstanding results for our younger ski competitors. Our finalists

paddling for medals this year were made up mostly of our young guns with a gold to Sam and Fletcher in a thrilling finish to win the U19 double ski of which Avoca has a proud record in this event in past years. Ella and Rob contested the finals of the double ski. Byron, Harry and Beau scored silver in the U17 ski relay, and in the U17 single Harry scored a bronze medal with Beau leading for the entire race only to be caught in dead water and the entire ski field coming through on a wave to leave him with a hard fought 4th place (cruel surf racing). Riley and Kaitlyn grabbed a point for Avoca in the open mixed double and Ella paddled to a gold medal in the U17 single ski. The entire ski squad performed outstandingly against the best in the country in all of their heats, semi and final races and is a credit to their determination and skills set up by their coach.

To Paul Ferrier, Dick Brierty, Paul Chadwick, Paul Hutchinson, Pete McIntyre, Jeff Beere and Brad Harvey and anybody else who spent many hours handling for competitors and shifting craft back and forth around the beach to make it easier for our competitors we all thank you. And also thanks to the Livingstones and Pommie for towing the ski trailer. The supporting crowd of Avoca members at the finish line for the finals made these wins and places at Aussie finals even more memorable and shows the camaraderie of our club is above all others.

Trevor Tame, Ski Captain – Avoca Beach SLSC

MaSterS reportAnother successful year for Avoca Masters, led admirably by Shaz’s girls and guys (Sharon Brierty has been busily recruiting female and male master’s competitors and putting them through her education and training regime). So look out if you are over 30 and happen to walk the beach any Saturday or Sunday morning – you too could be roped in. Once again we held the Branch title aloft – it’s amazing how new and old masters come out of the woodwork to defend our title, especially on home soil.

I would like to personally thank Dave Babbage and Alan Moffitt for their support at State by spending two days in an IRB. Also to be commended are Robyn McCloghry and Slim Peebles for officiating and allowing our masters to compete. Without officials we do not compete. So a big Thank You from all the Masters competitors.

Coolangatta Gold

The year started on the Gold Coast with the Coolangatta Gold. Well done to David O’Grady for placing 3rd in the 50+ category. A special mentin to David Broadbent, David was first and second for the majority of the event unfortunately sickness and a lack of training leading up to the event took their toll and he finished in 5th. Well done to Mark Felton for also finishing 6th in the same age group. Congratulations to Jeff Smith, Steve Hudson, Mandy Matuschka and Jason Knowles for winning the mixed over 35 team event. Congratulations also to the girls team comprising Sharon Brierty, Rachel Bateman and two colleagues from North Avoca for winning the over 35 long course female team event.

Pacific Palms/Killcare/Fingal

Unfortunately these popular Master’s competitions were cancelled or postponed due to strong surf this year. We are all hoping they reappear on the calendar next year as they provide a great environment for our newer and less experienced masters to experience competition.

Branch Masters, Avoca Beach – 1st

It was a great turn up at Avoca Beach for Branch Masters, a day Avoca was dominant in so many age groups. The girls had a wonderful day at Branch and brought home fantastic results: Sharon Brierty, Wendy Norman, Julie Fitzsimmons, Alice Laurence, Rachel Bateman, Kristy McQueen, Nikki Drobot were just some of the eager competitors that did us proud. The girls were impressive in and out of the water, their enthusiasm and support is always a highlight of the carnival.

The guys had great results, especially impressive were: Garth Hunter, Corey Myers, Gary Gee, Dave Broadbent,

Dave O’Grady, Mark Felton, Ben Hamilton, Michael Hunter – all Branch Champions, with Gordon Jones, Jim McAtamney, Graham Ball, Nigel Ball, Steve Jung, Chris Parker, bringing home medals.

State Masters, Umina Beach Avoca Beach – 10th in the state

There was a good contingent of racers at State this year. A large proportion of our girls finished in either 4th, 5th or 6th place earning us valuable points and helping the club to finish 10th overall. They are on the verge of medalling and another year under Sharon’s guidance and I am sure they will be winning medals. David Broadbent continued his return to health and the opportunity to mix it with the 50 plus crowd to take home a swag of medals. Gordon Jones and the Gee brothers also enjoyed a successful State titles. It was also good to see one of the superstars of the open era, Chris Parker competing and medalling. A special mention to Steve Jung a long time master’s competitor, back on the dais with a 2nd in the sprint relay. aVoca BeacH acceSS For aLLThe ability to access and enjoy the beach presents many challenges for people with disabilities who require the use of a wheelchair. In order to address this, Avoca Beach surf club teamed up with Peta Hardy, occupational therapist and director of Coast Rehab, in order to gain grant funding to purchase and trial beach access equipment. The grant was funded by the Department of Sport and Recreation and Lifetime Care and Support and aimed to improve access to sport and recreation for people with disabilities. The grant funded 20 metres of Mobi mat pathway plus two extra beach chairs, one for children requiring extra support and one for people with spinal cord injuries who can self-propel.

During the season, thanks to willing volunteer life savers, the Mobi Mat pathway was rolled out each patrol. The aim of the Mobi mat was to provide a smoother pathway over the soft sand. This enables people using wheelchairs, mobility aids and prams to travel more easily over the soft sand to the firm sand. Implementation of the matting involved training with lifesavers during each patrol. Throughout the season the matting was rolled out with the flags and taken in for storage at the end of each patrol. Many thanks are extended to all the willing members who happily engaged with the project and rolled the mat in and out each weekend.

Avoca Beach Access for All Facebook page was developed to share awareness of the project and increase disability awareness. This campaign has gained interest and prompted other beach access campaigns around the Central Coast and Australia. Feedback from visitors to the beach was extremely positive and there was considerable community interest and support. Avoca Beach surf club members should be extremely proud of the example they have set in their willingness to assist people with disabilities share in the enjoyment of the beach.

Brad McCloghry and Sam Cook Rescue of the Month

March 2016

RESCUE OF THE MONTH – MARCH 2016 AND CC SLS RESCUE OF THE YEARLifesavers involved: Brad McCloghry, Chris McCloghry and Sam Cook

On Sunday 6 March 2016 at 1.45pm, three lifesavers from Avoca Beach SLSC rescued a female swimmer who was found floating in the water. Due to Sam’s inquisitiveness, he paddled over and realised as he came closer that it was a female floating face down.

Immediately, Chris paddled over to assist the fellow surf lifesaver and the pair rolled the swimmer over on to her back and placed her on the board. By this stage, Brad McCloghry who was joining his fellow clubbies for a surf arrived at the beach and without hesitation paddled out to help.

The trio paddled the swimmer back to shore but due to the strong rip they found themselves in, it took around 15 minutes to reach the sand. Once they arrived at the shore, a doctor and nurse who were members of the public assisted the surf lifesavers to revive the swimmer.

As soon as the lady was carried up the beach and laid on her side she started vomiting fluid and seaweed. By this stage, the patrol ATV arrived and oxygen was administered immediately, however the female did not regain consciousness. An ambulance arrived as well as a helicopter and efforts to stabilise the female weren’t successful and she was subsequently flown to Royal North Shore.

The quick thinking and efforts by the three off duty lifesavers ultimately saved the life of the female swimmer. It was later found that they discharged her from hospital with no injuries.

RESCUE OF THE MONTH – SEPTEMBER 2015Lifesavers involved: Brett Beswick and Byron Chadwick

On Wednesday 6 September just after 11am, Brett Beswick and Byron Chadwick successfully rescued a rock fisherman in challenging conditions who had fallen into the ocean near Winney Bay.

The State Operations Centre tasked the Avoca Beach call-out team after reports came in of two rock fisherman in the water near Winney Bay. Brett, who is the Director of Lifesaving for the Central Coast Branch responded immediately to the call and headed straight to the surf club.

Within minutes Brett arrived at Avoca Beach SLSC where other lifesavers including Byron were preparing the jet ski. Brett led the rescue effort and asked 16 year old Byron to assist him find the two rock fisherman in need of assistance.

Arriving at the scene, it was confirmed there was only one rock fisherman who was wearing a life jacket and had fallen into the three foot swell. As the man was extremely close to the rocks, tangled in his own fishing line and holding onto a 70cm fish, Brett decided the best option was to have Byron enter the water.

The fisherman, who spoke no English, was secured by Byron and brought back to the jet ski. He released the fish and it swam away safely. Brett manoeuvred the jet ski carefully away from the rocks and headed back to Avoca Beach where the rock fisherman was transferred into a waiting ambulance.

This rescue was challenging due to the ocean conditions and hazardous swell which ultimately led to the fisherman getting into trouble in the first place. Brett, Byron and the other Avoca Beach members who assisted worked efficiently and used their skills to save the rock fisherman’s life.

RESCUE OF THE MONTH – DECEMBER 2015 AVOCA BEACH/OCEAN BEACHLifesavers involved: Chris Parker, Aaron Camp and Jane Davis

On Tuesday 8 December 2015 at approximately 8pm, a number of members from Surf Life Saving Central Coast rescued a teenager who was on the verge of losing consciousness after being swept out by a rip while swimming at Avoca Beach.

The SLS CC Branch meeting which included Avoca Beach member, Chris Parker and Ocean Beach members, Jane Davis and Aaron Camp had finished for the night when the trio who were outside talking among themselves noticed a swimmer near the rock pool at Avoca Beach. As the surf had swell to around 4-6 feet, and with the light quickly fading, the trio kept an eye on the swimmer. They realised he was out of his depth and was being dragged out by a fast-moving rip. It was clear that the 19 year old swimmer was in serious trouble and would not be able to return to shore. With limited light the three acted immediately to save the man – Aaron grabbed a child’s foam surfboard that had been left on the beach and entered the water semi-clothed, while Chris ran to the surf club to get a rescue board. By this stage the male was more than 200m off shore and in the impact zone. As Aaron approached the shoreward side of the patient Chris passed Aaron on the rescue board and got to the man first, calling “one more wave” to the patient to give him the hope of rescue. As Chris approached the man a large wave hit and he disappeared under the water. Chris searched desperately for him in the dark with choppy white water and when Chris spotted the swimmer he pulled the male onto the rescue board where he expelled a significant amount of water that he had inhaled. Chris then brought the male who was semi-conscious but unresponsive back to shore where he was met in the water by Aaron – they then brought him to the shoreline to clear his airways. While this was happening Jane located the man’s friends who had not noticed that he was missing in the water and

As Mackenzie and her fellow patrolling members arrived at the rocks, it was discovered a number of the injured had broken bones or dislocated joints, so SurfCom was radioed and advised several ambulances would be required. The beachgoers aged between 10 and 70 years old claimed to have been 20 metres from the edge of the rocks when the freak wave washed them off their feet.

The main concern for the surf lifesavers was to transport the injured safely from the rocks. The ones who couldn’t walk were carried on spinal boards to the nearby carpark to wait for paramedics while the others were taken to the first aid room for treatment. All the injured members were treated by paramedics and surf lifesavers with one person being transported to Gosford Hospital.

The efforts of the Avoca Beach surf lifesavers was outstanding as they provided a high level of care to a large number of injured beachgoers. They also showed great determination and bravery to carry the injured across the rock shelf and safely back to the beach.

DYLan LittLeHaLeS HeaDS to rioDylan started paddling with Avoca Kayak Club in early 2014 and has never looked back. At just 16 years old he has just qualified in Duisburg Germany in May 2016 for the Australian Paracanoe Team to represent Australia at the RIO Paralympics 7-18 September 2016.

Dylan has always dreamed of representing Australia in sport and now has such a bright future and is really looking forward to the journey ahead.

Dylan joined the surf club in 2015 and will do his bronze at the start of the season so that he can compete for Avoca this year.

called an ambulance. Aaron and Chris carried the swimmer up to Avoca Beach SLSC’s first aid room where they administered oxygen therapy and covered the male in a space blanket. The trio monitored the 19 year old until the ambulance arrived where he was transported to hospital. This rescue highlights the dangers of swimming at night and at an unpatrolled location. The swimmer was extremely lucky to be rescued by Chris and Aaron who courageously put their own lives at risk to save the male’s life.

RESCUE OF THE MONTH – JANUARY 2016

Lifesavers involved: Matt Penn, Kristy McQueen, Mackenzie Penn, Sharon Brierty, Finn MacDonald, Riley Bissett, James Cameron, Matthew Williams, Sharnee Warn, Jemma Duerden, Fletcher Armstrong, Michael McQueen, Bec Cameron, Wendy Norman, Rob Davis, Andrew Duerden and Brett Beswick.

On Tuesday 26 January at midday, surf lifesavers from Avoca Beach SLSC treated 11 beachgoers with serious injuries who had been knocked over by a freak wave on the rocks south of the clubhouse.

The patrolling members had just signed on to start their 12-3pm Australia Day shift when a member of the public advised the group that people had been swept off the rocks and required urgent assistance. As the patrol was aware there were many people in distress, the IRB was dispatched immediately with Matt and Mackenzie Penn on board while Kristy McQueen followed on a rescue board.

When they arrived at the location, the public were signalling to them that the incident was on the rocks at the front of the cliff face, not in the water. The remaining patrolling members on the beach were radioed by Matt and Mackenzie to assist as there were 11 people injured. Kristy made the brave decision to pass her rescue board to Mackenzie and climb up the rocks to provide assistance.

Congratulations to all members that supported and helped for another successful nipper season. With over 250 registered nippers regularly attending Sunday nippers, it takes the effort of the whole surf club community to help our children to learn surf skills and/or compete with their peers.

Avoca’s priority has always been to educate our children to be competent and safe on the beach and using surf equipment.

Each year we welcome a new generation of nervous nippers and parents taking part in the swim and board. Each season parents are amazed at the difference of their child’s ability from the start of the season in the surf and their competency at the beach.

A continued culture of parental involvement, where nipper parents get onto the sand and into the water, whilst getting to know other families greatly advances your children’s ability and the club’s community spirit.

This season saw Sunday nippers more often held in testing surf conditions. The positive attitude of our coaches, age managers and parents and their participation led to our new and less experienced nippers gaining new confidence in the water. So it is always a big thank you to everyone who contributes into educating the nippers throughout the season.

Active encouragement and participation of all nippers to achieve on Sundays has flourished into a strong competitive club spirit at local and state carnivals. This season the junior club continued for a 10th year winning the Central Coast Branch Championships and finishing 6th overall at the New South Wales State titles. Congratulations to everyone who competed.

All nippers and parents are congratulated on their attitude towards competing and respecting their performance and the performance of their team mates and other competitors. The club prides itself on their attitude, fairness and grace when competing.

The success of the club competitively comes from the combined effort and time put in by our age managers, coaches, officials, water safety and beach and water coordinators. Thank you for all your encouragement and effort this season.

The junior committee wishes the under 14 nippers that are moving from rookie nippers to the senior club continued success as they further develop their life saving and competition skills. Thank you to long serving under 14 Age Managers Paul McLoughlin, Dave Hill and Craig Bissett who have mentored their age groups from the under 8’s through to their final years as nippers.

Farewell and thank you to our long serving under 14 families that no longer have nippers. Thank you to the Richardsons, Blakes and Butlers for their continuous involvement throughout their children’s nipper lives.

To our ongoing major sponsors Avoca Beach Dental, Chemist Outlet and the Avoca Beach Butchery, thank you for your continued support and assistance this season.

A huge thank you to our committee members for continuing our great nipper program.

Hoping to see everyone at the start of the 2016/2017 season.
