PRESIDENT’S MESSAGERich Achor – ARENA Builders

We have all heard the saying before, but has it ever been more apropos than today? No matter where you turn it seems things are in limbo, no real movement, no real direction, no real energy. People seem lethargic, beaten down, not really engaged.

It doesn’t matter whether you lean democratic, republican or independent you can’t like the leadership being shown by any of them at any level, city, county, state or federal. It seems like we are watching a bunch of preschoolers in a sand box fighting over who gets the shovel. They win the fight; get the shovel and then just lean on it.

Someone explain to me how we can create an atomic bomb, put humans successfully into outer space, eradicate polio, etc. yet we can’t plug a well hole in the ocean? Leadership? Politicians looking for money to dole out and lawyers looking for a target to sue. How about organizing the best minds in the world in an effort to stop the leak and develop a safe way to extract the oil from these conditions? There is plenty of time for the politicians to look for money to dole out and for the lawyers to organize huge lawsuits after we fix the problem it is just easier without leadership to focus on the money and the lawsuits.

Never has change been more called for and never has change been further from the realistic outcome. Who decided that people should become politicians for life? Who decided that you can say ANYTHING to get elected and then do whatever you want or whatever best benefits you after you get elected. Accountability, honor, integrity, honesty, putting your constituents needs and wishes above your own….these are all a thing of the past with each of the parties; republican, democrat, and independents.

What happened to spirited debate, honest respectful disagreement, and getting behind an outcome once the debate and eventual vote was taken? November is coming and no matter your leanings, get out and vote.

Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way….

The consumers came out in large numbers and voted in the mess we have, let us, the producers be sure we get out and vote this time.

Action - I am happy to tell you we do not have a group of like-minded individuals on your HBAWS executive committee, or Board of directors. We disagree, sometimes seriously. The thing I am proud of in today’s world is even though we disagree, we respect each other enough to allow the other’s points to be heard, we debate the issue, vote on the issue and then regardless of whether we agreed or disagreed with the outcome before the vote we all get behind the outcome and try our best to make that decision a success. I believe this is why you don’t see the lethargy, the disengagement, and the bitter feuds in our organization or marketplace. You see energy, enthusiasm and hope for the future. WS is in better shape than almost any other HBA in the state and a good bit of the reason why is our attitudes and our actions. We ARE going to succeed, just ask us.

The Fall Parade of Homes is coming. We need everyone to get involved. We need strong participation. The Parade is the major way we pay for the operation of our organization. Our dues cover a very small percentage of our operating costs, most of the other events we sponsor break even or provide a very small contribution to our organization. The Fall Parade, the Parade Association House and the Triad Home and Garden Show make it all happen for us. I am concerned about this fall’s Parade. We need entries. Builders; if you have spec, a custom, finished or even close to finished we need to have it entered. Associates; encourage your builders to enter- do your part by providing some financial help; reduced pricing, extended payment terms, showcase products.

We need everyone to DO something to make this fall’s Parade a success. Remember, action is how we separate ourselves from the unsuccessful.

REMODELERS UPDATEChuck Hicks, President, NAHBR, HBAWS

NO JULY MEETING:

The NAHB Remodelers June meeting featured Ty Johnston with PF Plumbing as the presenter. I am in the process of lining up speakers and topics for the remainder for the second half of the year, so let me know if you have a specific topic you would like to have discussed.

We do not have a council meeting in July, but Dan Dockery is presenting to the realtors on July 22nd, and this may be a meeting you want to attend. The subject deals with pulling building permits on home renovations and the impact on real estate disclosure documents where work is performed without a permit. This will be a great opportunity to interact with the realtors.

Remodeling activity appears to be picking up the past month. I hope both members and associates are seeing this trend.

Since we all work in older homes the majority of the time, have you and your subcontractors obtained their lead paint certifications? We have been involved in two exterior projects recently that involved lead paint containment. I actually got a call from the NC Health and Human Services Department concerning one of

the jobs! A neighbor had called their office to express their concern about dust coming from the old siding removal. Our certification is on file with the state, and they told the neighbor that we were certified and would be taking all the proper precautions. They called me to verify this. Fortunately, my siding subcontractor had also obtained his certification, and was following

all the proper procedures. So the awareness is out there! Be careful!

During our August meeting, we will need to return to the discussion of the leadership of the Remodelers Council for 2011. Please call me or Jerry with suggested nominations for the president, VP, Treasurer, and Membership in 2011.

WOMEN’S COUNCILRosemary Howell, President

Even though many of our members are enjoying their summer vacation, the Women’s Council continues to be active in supporting our business community. We sponsored a hole at the recent Tee-Off Against Child Abuse Golf Tournament. This tournament is sponsored by the Winston Salem Regional Association of Realtors and the Winston Salem Mortgage Lenders Association. The title sponsor of the tournament is Shugart Enterprises. This was the 20th time this tournament has been played and over $400,000 total has been donated to the SCAN Center over the last twenty years.

At the end of June, the Women’s Council is having a “Before and After” baby shower to honor Tracy Morehead who just recently had a little girl and Valerie Adams who is expecting a little girl in July. How’s that for increasing our membership!

Women’s Council will not be meeting in July but will use our August meeting to kick off our wrapping paper sales. Have a safe and happy summer.

Associate & Builder Networking EventWine Tasting and Networking at Raylen Vineyard and Winery

There is an old saying “if ain’t broke don’t fix it” which seems to discourage change, if you can make your current way of doing things work. While there may be few valid reasons to change for the sake of changing, there will always be room for improvement. The Associate Members Committee is embracing change and looking for new and better ways to do the same old thing - bring together Associate and Builder members.

On June 10, a group of Associates and Builders united for a light-hearted social at Raylen Vineyards. The two groups of ten alternated between touring the vineyard, and tasting and learning about the distinct wines created at Raylen. While some were already fans, many had their first taste from the vines of this unique winery in nearby Davie County.

In navigating through the difficult waters of economic downturns, individuals may find themselves adrift and in isolation from others. Often, it may seem easier to be like the turtle and withdraw into your shell, waiting and hoping for things to just get better. Wisdom offers a better solution which requires much strength of character, and that is choosing to stay connected. Those who gathered at Raylen enjoyed a couple of hours in the company of peers, doing what they do best... building. They were building relationships, staying connected, and laying the foundation for the future of the Home Builders Association, a house united. If you are interested in participating in future events with AMC, please email [email protected] to be included on our distribution list.

ASSOCIATE GUEST COLUMNMike Madren, Kitchens n More

THE IMPORTANCE OF INDOOR AIR QUALITYAs I travelled the Triad one morning, a news program shared about a new GREEN home being built. It is one of the first LEED Platinum homes in that particular area. For the next 3 ½ minutes I hear about energy efficiency. If I were lucky, they would have mixed in 30 seconds about rainwater capture for irrigation and then a final 30 seconds about...of course cost. I recognize this is great exposure for the USGBC and green building in general, but for a cabinet guy, or a living breathing human being for that matter, it feels like they’re forgetting something slightly more important INDOOR AIR QUALITY!!!!

As obvious as it sounds there are many good reasons to be concerned with indoor air quality. One reason is that we are spending more time indoors. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), people spend 90-percent of their time indoors, where the air is two to five times more polluted than the air outside. The EPA also tells us that children receive 72% of their chemical emissions exposure indoors. If our children’s health is not reason enough, nothing is. Another reason is how we build a Green home. Homes used to be built to “breath”. Yes, we wanted to keep cold air out in the winter and inside in the summer, but less attention was paid to properly sealing and controlling the indoor environment. Not anymore. If you’re building a green or high performance home, it is designed to control every space in, under, and over the living area. You will hear this called the home’s “envelope”, a term clearly describing the intent to seal and manage the air inside the home. This makes it even more critical that everything inside a home be a positive, healthy contributor to the indoor air quality. Well, I told you I was a cabinet guy so what does this have to do with cabinets? Simply, we live our lives in the kitchen so your cabinetry should meet or exceed the healthy product goals you have for the rest of your home.

Cabinetry may involve two of the most prolific sources of indoor air polluters…finish and casework materials. For finish, make sure you are looking for low to no VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) finishes. Although not widely used, the healthiest solution is an all waterborne finish system. You will find proven durability in a waterborne finish and the technology has improved dramatically allowing for deep, rich paints and stains

that rival traditional solvent finishes. For casework, the best option is NAF (no added formaldehyde) construction. This will cost a little more as those are not often offered as a standard. Fortunately, most manufacturers have adopted standards set by the California Air Resource Board. California has decided what formaldehyde levels they will allow to be shipped into their state and that has been adopted as the de facto national standard.

Whether you are building a green high performance house, remodeling your current kitchen, or building a traditional house, your indoor air quality matters. Don’t make your cabinet decision solely on price, style, or “ecofriendliness”. Do a little investigating…you can find a solution that meets all three.

For more information on Executive Cabinetry, contact Mike Madren at Kitchens n More. Mike’s showroom is located in Clemmons and you can reach the Kitchens n More team at 336-712-4009.

Chris Wood is Director of Customer Service & Sales Support for Executive Cabinetry located in the Upstate of South Carolina and responsible for Executive Cabinetry’s green initiatives/certifications. Executive Cabinetry is a semi-custom, full access cabinet manufacturer offering a wide variety of styles and customization options.
