    PRESIDENTS MESSAGEBy: Mark Halm

    To all COMGO Members:

As I sit here the day after the 4th

of July, our Independence Day, I havesome very good thoughts about our countrys independence andfreedom. There are many other countries that do not have the sameopportunities as we do or realize what we have endured to keep thesefreedoms. I am thankful and proud to be an American.

Summer is upon us; I have been successful at making it to the RiverRun event (almost summer) and the GOF Central car show. Bothevents, different as they are, were very inspirational and significant atthe same time. Being able to spend time with others that have thesame MG enthusiasm as I do, socializing with MG people from otherstates and backgrounds, and seeing your own COMGO group cometogether for that same camaraderie is all very good and again, Im veryproud to be an American.

I understand that the group that went to Canada for MG 2010 had agreat time on their journey. What I cannot believe is that the BorderPatrol let Everett Rainier back in the country! Shocking! Im glad therewere no mishaps - that was a long trip!

After watching the second set of fireworks last night, (Susans thirdset), I believe we all should be very thankful for this country we live in.I hope everyone has a great summer and plans many events withfamilies and friends.

Please take a look at the upcoming calendar of events because theywill sneak up on you as they do me. There are same great events forthe year planned and I hope you can make it to some of them.Drive safely, remember, Safety Fast.

    Sincerely,

    Your humble servant,

    Mark

    EDITORS CORNERBy: Joe Mercer

With the driving season well under way, you will see in this issue thatthere is a lot to report on. The car shows to date have includedColumbus own British Car Day, MG 2010 in Bellville, Ontario, and theGOF Central meet in Sandusky. All were great and each had adifferent focus and style. My personal favorite was the GOF Centralgathering at Sawmill Creek Resort, only a couple of hours away.Having owned MGAs and MGBs, I have not had much involvementwith the pre-war or T-series cars until this show. In addition to around25 or so MGBs, MGAs and Midgets, there were perhaps 100 Pre-warand T-series cars on display. Presentations covering the geneology ofthe early MGs and discussions by about a dozen owners on theheritage/history of their own cars were among the highlights. Not onedetail was overlooked - from the color coding and schedule placed onyour individual nametag to the hospitality suite. Kudos to those that setup this show! Quaker Steak & LubeBy: Tony Burgess

This year marked the 26thanniversary of Central Ohios great British

Car Day at Quaker Steak & Lube. This year, we featured the MG TDin celebration of its 60

thanniversary as well as the Triumph TR4 which

    was celebrating its 50th

    anniversary.

As has been the practice over the last few years, the Buckeye TriumphClub hosted a Tour of Central Ohio on Saturday afternoon where overtwenty cars participated. The tour took them north into DelawareCounty, then into Galena for lunch, then looping back to the Polarisarea. This year the weather cooperated fully for a wonderful day out.

And to make it the full British Weekend participants have come toexpect, the Central Ohio MG Owners, led by Jeanne Rainer and crew, hosted Saturday Evenings Hospitality Suite from 7:00 PM. This year,

we moved the host hotel to Cambria Suites Hotel on Lyra Drive andeveryone really liked the change. We even had several local membersstay at the hotel this year rather than drive home after the party. Over70 people joined us in the Hospitality Suite and had a wonderfulevening, due to the great food and beverages provided by Jeanne andher team, and the great company of all the folks participating. Wevereceived so many compliments from our out of town visitors about thisevening.

On Friday, some of Thursdaysactivities were repeated to alloweveryone a chance to participate, but the big event was Track Day atShannonville Race Track. In the

morning, each driver was givenlessons by a volunteer driverfamiliar with the track. Then in theafternoon, we were allowed to dolaps by ourselves on the track.

What a blast!! It was a very safe and controlled environment but withstrict rules. If you broke the rules, you were black flagged and askedto exit the track. All of our folks behaved themselves (not sure how). Inever realized how well our B can handle at speed. For a 30 year oldcar, it is amazing the engineering that went into it at that time.

Friday evening was quite special inthat the first part of the evening was atour of the Canadian Royal Air ForceMuseum at Trenton which is about 10miles away. After the tour, we went

across the street to the Officers Hallfor Pub Night. The dinner themewas British with Shepherds Pie,Bangers and Mash (well, sort of),veggies and Trifle for dessert. Ofcourse, soft drinks and Pints wereavailable.

On Saturday was the big Car Show on the front lawn of Ramada

overlooking the Bay of Quinte. The morning started out overcast andas we got to noon, the overcast became a little solid. By 1:00, it wasvery solid, so many folks retreated to the undercover car park of theRamada. This really didnt dampen spirits too much as theconversation continued undercover.

Due to the number of people, Saturday nights meal was held in twodifferent rooms. Once everyone was finished eating, the Ramada staff

cleared the tables from the large room and set up classroom seating. Then, everyone from both rooms came back into the large room for theawards portion of the banquet. The Ohio contingent took home severalawards including the Honey B award presented to Everett & JeanRainer; First place awards to Jeff & Carolyn Sigrist and Dave & PamHandley; Second place awards to Dick and Laura Carissimi; and Third

On Sunday morning, we headed to Jamestown, NY for our final nighton the road. Just north of Jamestown, we ran into the first of severalheavy rains that day, and on Monday. However, that evening, 39 of usboarded the Summer Wind for a nice dinner cruise on Lake

Chautauqua. The cruise was scheduled for two hours, but after aboutan hour out, the Captain came on the radio and told us the Sheriff wasordering all boats back to port due to an incoming heavy storm.Shortly after we docked, the skies opened again and folks made mad-dashes to their cars during brief let-ups of the rain.

On Monday morning, we headed to Lyn Kinneys family cottage onthe lake only a few miles from our hotel. Lyn, her mom, brother, KellyShaw, Ann Graham and friend treated us to a wonderful home cookedbreakfastit was yummy. The cottage (more like a house) was builtby Lyns grandfather in 1917 as a retreat from their home in Buffalo. Its great to see these types of things being carried through thegenerations.

Spring Drive - RiverRun May 29By: Susan LoganPicture by Mark Halm

May 29th turned out to be a beautiful dayfor RiverRun. One hundred seven carsand drivers/passengers registered for thedrive from Grove City, OH to Augusta KYand back again. Two registrants expectto drive the route at a later date, whichmakes a total of 109.

Sixteen cars driven by COMGOmembers started the event. Thosedriving their MGs included Larry andShirley Brough, Tony and Lynn Burgess,Bob and Deborah Forsblom, Roger Kochand Jan Fleischmann, Susan Logan, Jim& Ann Nibert, Blake Michael, Jeff Sigrist,

and David Smittle. Those driving their Miatas included Gary Albaugh,Greg and Cindy Garnett, Bill & Kate Koch, and Ken Pendleton. Two

new Minis appeared with COMGO members Jeff Kemper and RonNist. Mark and Susan Halm were in a BMW Z4. The MGA which ranRiverRun, was driven by James Hurm, who is a happy Eric Jones'customer from Louisville, KY.

The registration fees and some extra donations totaled $1150 and willbe donated to The James Cancer Hospital at The Ohio StateUniversity. (We also collected $24 for the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.). Ithank you.

Thanks go to Chuck Ashton and Bill Atterbury who laid out a wonderfultour and provided us with excellent route instructions. I also want tothank the car clubs who sponsored our event: Buckeye Miata Club forthe printing and promotion; North American MGB Register for theinsurance and the Central Ohio British Car Club Council for supportand promotion.

Although the drive was advertised as 320 miles, adding the distancefrom home, I drove 387 miles in my 1973 MGB. Although I had a longday, David Smittle departed at 6:15 AM and returned home at11:15 PM after driving 539 miles in the TC. I left the Bob Evans at9:05 AM and returned to the Bob Evans at 9:00 PM -- a long day, and

we were too late to have ice cream at Wittich's Candy Store inCircleville. (The sign in the window said that they closed at 5:00 PM.)

Luckily we stopped at Blake's Pharmacy in West Union; six of us hadsmall ice cream cones for a total of $2.40, which turned into $3.00 with

the tip - what a bargain! The small ice cream cones were essentiallythe same size as what I often buy in Columbus for about $2.69.Thanks to Bill and Chuck for the tip about Blake's. I had been in WestUnion on many tours, but this was the first time that I had visitedBlake's.

Summer Drive: GOF Central MG Meeting July 1 3By: Mark HalmPictures by: Mark Halm & Joe Mercer

This years event for the GOF Central was put

together with the Ohio Chapter of the NEMGTregister. The event was held in Huron, Ohio atthe Sawmill Creek Resort near Lake Erie withmany of its interesting sites. The events startedon Thursday, July 1st at noon to begin registrationand ended on July 4 for the 10 PM fireworks.

During the GOF, there were many seminars, tech sessions, and

historical race re-creations. I want to mention an event that took placein the beginning of the week prior to the GOF, namely the Put-In-BayRaces - Re-creation.

On Tuesday afternoon, a re-creation of running the track with vintagecars took place on South Bass Island (Put-In-Bay). There was a policeescort, with 40-45 vintage cars following, that took two laps around theoriginal track. These vintage races were originally sponsored by theCleveland Sports Car Club and were held between 1952-59 then again

in 1963. There are plans for a monument/marker to be put on theStart/Finish which is near the Harbor area at Put-In-Bay. This event initself was a great memory of the 1950s which featured MGs goinghead to head with Porsches and Jaguars.

I arrived on Friday afternoon just in time for the wonderful GOF Centralcookout. I filled my plate and found some great talking Minnesotans toconverse with. By the time I left the tent I was doing the Dont youknow and By golly. What a great group they were! I missed the First-Timers Car Display in the morning, but I understand it contained arecord of 53 cars.

On the Marblehead Driving Tour- we were able to see many attractionsalong the coast-line, causeways, and had many great roads to run on.Stops included Marblehead Lighthouse, of course. We also found agreat place for ice-cream (Tofts Dairy) in Sandusky, where I got asmall cone that I could barely put down. It was great!

Friday evening was a great treat for everyone that participated in theMMM Tour. This event was a walk and talk presentation by theowners of 12 MMM cars that were absolutely beautiful. Each ownertalked about the history of their car - if the car was a racer, a leisuredriver, or if it came from England, or when, the condition it was found inand who helped to restore it. There were many great stories thattouched peoples lives. A touching event that came though with an A-Plus.

The night ended with a live auction with about 200 attendees that was

too funny for words - you had to be there!

On Saturday, the morning started with a great breakfast buffet at theresort with the car show starting at 9 PM. There were so many pre-warcars on display it was amazing. Bob Watts counted 19 MMM cars and21 TCs - more than he had seen together at one time. I counted 12

MGAs and at least that many MGBs. There was a huge showing forOhio with 112 registered participants. The COMGO group itself hadhalf a dozen cars that made it to the event. We also had a couple ofwinners in the GOF Central from COMGO. Taking 3rd place in theMGTF Class with a 1954 MGTF was Dave Jackman from London, OH.

Taking 1st place in the MGA 1500 Class was Mark Halm fromColumbus, Ohio.

MMMs, Ts, As Bs Midgets, ands V-8s were all on Display

The Grand Finale, which I missed, was the Awards Banquet on

Saturday night. I heard from Bob Watts that the food was great andthe finale was even better! At the end of the night, I understand that apartition was opened and behind it was four MMM cars on displayinside! It sounded amazing to me!

I want to thank those that participated in the show and also those thathelped to put this event together. These shows take a great deal ofcoordinating and planning which can be very time consuming. Weneed to remember we do it for the cars! Thanks to Bob Watts andJack Smittle with their input for this article. I also want to thank Joeand Roseann Mercer for running in pairs with me on the trip home.

Thanks, Jack Smittle for inviting me to one of the best shows I havebeen to.

Our Version of Two for the RoadBy: Lynne Pendleton

[Editors Note: This is part 2 of a 2-part story. If you recall, afterTonys tag-a-long to Toronto in 2005, the VanDeLinders and

Pendletons embarked on a road trip through Canada, to the ThousandIslands and toured upstate New York. They took in fabulous sights, put up with cars drenched in an overnight deluge, and had just drivenup White Face Mountain where the temperatures had them nearlyshivering.]

Descending White Face Mountain was akin to a downhill roller coasterride. Our drivers heeded the warning about not riding the brakes. The

cars performed admirably and delivered us from near heaven back toMother Earth. After the morning on the mountain, we were hungry---again. In search of provisions, we happened upon a Mom and Poptype grocery and purchased the makings for lunch.

Further down the highway, we pulled into a park near a stream. Wechose a stone table in a grove of trees for an impromptu picnic. Weretrieved the homemade bread purchased at The Village the daybefore and assembled ham and cheese sandwiches accompanied by

veggies, apples and potato chips for munching. We contemplated ournext destination while sipping a mellow wine. All agreed that life doesnot get any better than this day, which was absolutely glorious!

It was mid-afternoon as we continued our trek southward on some ofthe best MG roads we have experienced. No wonder Cris had beenanxious to bring us to this area. Highway 9 was especially thrilling withits twists and turns through beautiful upstate New York. Havingsurvived the experience the previous night, we women humored ourhusbands when they pulled into another rustic lodge on Lake Georgefor the evening. Rustic is generous, primitive is more descriptive for thecity girl. In consolation, we dined at a nice upscale restaurant at themarina, and enjoyed a sumptuous meal. At nightfall, we returned tothe cabin and noticed a significant drop in the temperature. Like everyother night on this trip, we gathered in one room or the other to playMexican Train dominoes. Cris and Jo Ann welcomed us this particularevening with a roaring fire in the fireplace to offset the chill. We played

until nearly midnight every nightnot bad for folks who are normally inbed by 9:30 or 10:00 PM.

By morning, the thermometer had dipped even lower into the 30s. Itwas June 24

th! Only embers remained in the fireplace, so we

awakened to frigid rooms. We awoke early. From the prone position in

bed, we realized for the first time, a huge deer head was peering downon us from the wall above. That unnerving sight first thing in themorning and the bone-chilling cold were enough to get us up and outfor a speedy departure. Even wrapped in a car robe, I could not getwarm. We headed to the nearest roadside restaurant for breakfast and

fresh, hot coffee, which was definitely a welcome relief even for thisnon-coffee drinker.

With bodies re-energized and cars re-fueled, we hit the road in pursuitof historic Fort Ticonderoga and Lake Champlain, both significant sitesduring the Revolutionary War. The fort is famous for being the site ofthe first colonial victory when Ethan Allen and the Green MountainBoys defeated the British in 1775. The excursion began with a musketshooting demonstration and a tour of the museum with its manyartifacts and treasures. We wandered around the ramparts of the fortpeering into all the nooks and crannies. We listened to a guide whoregaled us with tales as he marched us to the shore. He recountedhow four colonial soldiers, in a drunken stupor, inadvertently changedthe course of the war in our favor. For yet another time on this trip, wefound ourselves gazing over an expanse of sun dazzled water. Thecoast of Vermont was only a stones throw across the channel.

With another lesson in history under our belts, we set our course to theFinger Lakes, so named because their configuration resembles ahuman hand with extended fingers. The glacial till deposited in thisregion was rich and conducive to growing grapes and wine production. We could not pass up an interlude in fine wine country with wineries soabundant. Of course, each winery we visited presented a tastingopportunity. Imbibing so early in the day was a bit foreign, but we gotover it, and were careful not to over-indulge. While we purchased afew bottles here and there along the way, it wasnt until several

wineries down the pike that we discovered a wine we all really enjoyed.A decision was made to buy a case and split it between us. That done, the next challenge was figuring out where it would fit in the already

jam-packed cars. Our resident mathematician, Jo Ann, the one with theorderly and analytic mind, guided us on re-positioning stuff and re-allocating space behind the seats for the precious cargo.

For the first time in days, our cars struck a westward course into the

afternoon sun. We continued to feast our eyes on the natural beautyalong the way to Watkins Glen. By evening, we secured a non-descript room in a motel ranked somewhere between the posh and theprimitive. An on-site restaurant served up a hearty supper. It hadbecome a habit to determine the next days plans over the eveningmeal. We decided to explore the famous Watkins Glen gorge the nextday.

With an early start, we hiked well into the gorge, past half a dozenwaterfalls, limpid pools and various stone formations---a must-seephenomenon! The gorge was longer than our ambition since the dayheated up very quickly and the high humidity was exhausting. It was a

stark contrast to our visit on top White Face Mountain only a few daysearlier. Back in the parking lot, we purchased ice cold bottled water, once again counter to the coffee that we had so relished for warmth.New York offers variety to suit every taste. Before we moved on, Crisgleefully posed for one last time with the booty of the first place award. With his finger, he signaled #1 or at least that is what I thought hewas doing. Anyone who knows Cris can attest to his mild, even-keeledmanner. However, his plaque prank had revealed a mischievous, perhaps even devious, side of Cris and his accomplice, (initials MH),that are seldom seen.

To combat the afternoon sun, we reluctantly put up the car hoods andutilized the two and 60 rule to create a breeze as we tooled along thefreeway across the state. We were homeward bound. We tookpleasure in how well both cars had performed. Indeed, the only snafuoccurred when we stopped for fuel at one of the Indian reservationstations, typical of New York State. Gas is reasonably priced and full

service is provided. When the attendant obligingly ran the squeegeeover the windscreen of the Pendleton car, a mini Niagara Falls rainedinto my lap. Prior to the trip, Ken and Cris has replaced thewindscreen, and apparently no obviously, the seal was notwatertight---a new item for the fix-it list.

By late afternoon, we dropped down into Pennsylvania for a drivethrough the Allegheny National Forest. On the way, we encountered aflock of birds as we headed for Oil City, our last stopover for the trip.

While the others checked in, I stayed with the car. As different guestsexited the motel, they stared at our car, in curiosity or admiration Iassumed. What I mistook for glances of approval, rather, wereperplexed gazes at the front of our car. I exited to investigate and wasaghast to discover a lovely Baltimore oriole embedded in the grill.Sadly, it did not survive.

The guys headed for the bar for a brew, and JoAnn I headed for our

rooms. I ducked in for a quick shower and shampoo, but not beforeordering pizza and salad from a local establishment. Delivery waspromised in forty-five minutes. After the bird calamity, staying in wasmore appealing than going out for dinner. I was barely out of theshower and only partially dressed when the pizza arrived, much earlier

than expected. Ken and Cris were not yet back and I did not haveenough cash to cover the whole order.

Without hair being done or make-up applied, I swallowed my prideand went in search of the men. Luckily, I did not have to go far when I

encountered them on stairs. Like naughty boys, they were smugglingbeer up to the rooms. At least they helped pay and tip the deliveryboy. Since the pizza was warm, I did not want to delay dinner bydoing my hair and face. Once the tummies and taste buds weresatisfied, the others were ready for our ritual domino game. At thispoint, it seemed fruitless to style my hair, which had already dried intothe tight ringlets a new perm produces. Ah well, my attitude at thatpoint was, Let the games begin. To this day, Cris still comments onmy appearance with the untypical kinky do, or un-do, as was the case.

At breakfast the next morning, the guys were surprised to learn, afterall their secret shenanigans the night before, that beer and alcoholwere actually permitted on the premises, including the rooms. Wetarried a bit longer than necessary before beginning the last leg of the

journey home. It was still early when we crossed the border back intoOhio, and arrived on our doorstep in the early afternoon, eleven daysand 2000+ miles from when we started. We could have probably

made it home the night before, but we preferred to prolong the purepleasure of the trip as long as possible. The MGBs were fun to drive aswell as reliable in taking us everywhere we wanted to go. We had livedup to our club mottoes, Safety fast, and Drive, eat, sleep andrepeat! Had it not been for obligations back home, we could have allcontinued on and on. Kudos to Cris and JoAnn for being wonderfulguides and traveling companions! Another great trip was concludedand committed to the bank of happy memories. However, with ourexceptional and active COMGO Car Club, we can happily anticipate

the future events and drives that are perpetually in the works.

As for the purloined plaque, I think Cris was a little disappointed thatEverett never even realized the switcheroo that occurred until Crisfessed up and ultimately returned the trophy to its rightful owner.Guess it just goes to show that when one has so many awards, it is

just doggone hard to keep track!
