The organization also seeks to engage and motivate youth to make a difference in their community. Each year, the CCG awards a graduating senior from Coppell Independent School District with a $1,000 scholarship to assist with their college education expenses. The CCG awarded its first scholarship in 2008. Eligible students must be graduating seniors that will be pursuing higher education in a 4-year, 2-year or technical school and are interested in earning a degree in a science or environmentally-related field. Applicants should also be involved in community service activities. This year’s winner is Bharad Raghavan, a 2010 graduate of Coppell High School. Bharad graduated CHS with a 4.0 GPA and ranked 5 th in his class of 730. Bharad was the co-founder of the CHS chapter of the Sierra Club and spends much of his time volunteering at local hospitals, as well serving as a Youth Advisor to the Coppell Community Garden Board. He will be attending Stanford University where he plans

Coppell Community Garden honors Stanford-bound CHS graduate

COPPELL, Texas – The Coppell Community Garden (CCG) organization is recognized as a model for other communities considering community gardens, as well as a leader in volunteerism and environmental stewardship. The organization also seeks to engage and motivate youth to make a difference in their community.

Each year, the CCG awards a graduating senior from Coppell Independent School District with a $1,000 scholarship to assist with their college education expenses. The CCG awarded its first scholarship in 2008. Eligible students must be graduating seniors that will be pursuing higher education in a 4-year, 2-year or technical school and are interested in earning a degree in a science or environmentally-related field. Applicants should also be involved in community service activities.

This year’s winner is Bharad Raghavan, a 2010 graduate of Coppell High School. Bharad graduated CHS with a 4.0 GPA and ranked 5th in his class of 730. Bharad was the co-founder of the CHS chapter of the Sierra Club and spends much of his time volunteering at local hospitals, as well serving as a Youth Advisor to the Coppell Community Garden Board. He will be attending Stanford University where he plans to major in Molecular Biology and minor in Environmental Studies and then attend medical school and pursue a career in medicine.

“In addition to Bharad’s academic achievements, he has a passion and interest in sustainability. He consistently meets the aims and objectives of the Coppell Community Garden,” said Trudy White, Board President of the Coppell Community Garden, “From founding the Sierra Club at CHS to heading up an alternative energy project at his school, Bharad is very talented and is involved in providing many other contributions to his community.”

About the Coppell Community GardenThe Coppell Community Garden (CCG) was founded in 1998 and is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. The CCG operates two garden locations and over 80 volunteers donate their time to grow and harvest organic produce that is donated to Metrocrest Social Services’ food pantry. Annually, the CCG donates over 10,000 pounds of produce to the food pantry. The CCG is led by an eight-member board and also operates the Coppell Farmers Market and offers numerous educational opportunities each year. For more information, visit CoppellCommunityGarden.org.
