President’s Message

How do people find out about us? Our website contains valuable information about the outdoors, useful links to other sites and interesting photographs of our hikes. Recently we got a Facebook site, which will provide an opportunity for people to post comments about our activities. It’s important to know how we’re doing and what we can do better. Our quarterly newsletter, mailed to members, lists our activities. They are also listed in the Pocono Record and in This Week in the Poconos paper edition and on their website. (This Week in the Poconos is usually available at the DWG Welcome Center which is open on weekends.) The POC, in the words of This Week in the Poconos, “is a friendly hiking group open to all individuals interested in exploring the trails of the Pocono Mountains.” There is no charge to hike with the POC and we welcome everyone, regardless of age or place of residence who wishes to hike with us. Many of the hikes are easy or moderately paced. Our leaders are familiar with the variety of municipal and state parks, game lands, state forests and our national “park,” the DWG National Recreation Area. Often there is a mixture of ages and backgrounds and abilities, which makes for intergenerational and intercultural sharing. Compared to other recreational activities the costs of hiking and belonging to a club are minimal. Our hikes provide exercise, socializing and focus on nature, and are source of information about woodlands, rivers, and forests. The POC advocates for a wise use of our state’s and our country’s natural resources, and our club along with the Keystone Trail Association and conservation organizations is very active monitoring trails and keeping them open through work crews. I urge people to become a member of POC, to become involved with our goals, and to support us by volunteering.

2010 TRAIL CAREFrom John MotzPOC Trailcare Committee Chair:

Outdoor Club Funds Newest Asset Against Overgrown Trails

May 2010The POC Trailcare Crew has a new weapon in fighting back the brush that tries to reclaim area

trails for mother nature. The Club currently has two brushcutters, and old FS 120, which is out of production, and a

newer FS 85. The 85 is efficient on fuel, but not as heavy duty as some of the work we tackle. At the May Membership meeting, the Club approved purchase of a Stihl FS-250 brushcutter on a request from the Trailcare committee chair, John Motz.

The new machine, a 2.45 cu. In. power head with 2.15 bhp output and weighing in at just under 14 lbs, along with a new safety helmet were purchased from Cramer’s Power House (formerly Sebring’s) in East Stroudsburg for just under $600. While many of the tools we use for trail care are purchased and owned by the DCNR, from time to time the Club has to purchase its own power equipment. Fortunately throughout the years, the Club has been able to help fund these purchases through the additional donations members make on their annual memberships. The higher categories of membership help

support our Trailcare and advocacy programs, contributing to the sustainability of area trails. Without our efforts, and your donations, many local trails would be unmaintained. I’m sure we’ve all hiked some of those.

Thanks to the members for their continuing support of the Club’s efforts to maintain trails for current and future generations!

If anyone wants to enjoy this powerful asset for themselves, contact John Motz about upcoming Trailcare events.

POC ACTIVITIES CALENDAR For every activity, please wear appropriate clothing and footwear, bring a lunch or snack, and water to drink. The Meeting time for activities is 10:00 AM unless otherwise noted in the write up for the hike.

Hiking on uneven terrain can be hard on the ankles, so be sure to wear hiking boots, which are stiffer and taller than sneakers and have better traction. Going downhill can be hard on the knees, so if yours are sensitive, invest in a walking stick or hiking poles to take the pressure off.

Anyone interested in hiking on Thursdays should E-mail [email protected] for the schedule.
