Literature

Literature, literature, how I love thy literature! Literature with Mrs. Mendralski was a lot of fun 3

rd quarter. We did all sorts of activities: book

reports, reading in class together, stations, creating love letters and more. For instance, we had a book report on fictional books of our choice. Mrs. Mendralski had us write down our information on a paper replica of a sandwich! Everyone got into it by making them colorful, even cutting out cardboard or foam to make their “sandwiches” extra creative.

We read a variety of books for 3rd quarter, including Walk Two

Moons and Chinese Cinderella (honors). We take notes, have quizzes, and learn different or unfamiliar vocabulary words from the stories. Also, we read short stories and poems such as “the Highway Man” which was about a man and a woman who show their true compassion towards each other through life and death. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we wrote our own love letters to the characters in the story from the perspective of other characters, working on point of view and creative writing. If I may say so myself, I enjoyed writing the love letter and being able to have the freedom to decorate the letter the way I pleased. This is just a little portion of what we do in literature class!

COMPOSITION

So far this quarter in Ms. Kamman’s composition class, we have learned a lot of things. For example, we have done vocabulary, Paragraphs of the Week, and we have written an entire persuasive paper. Don’t think we haven’t learned any-thing about grammar because, let’s face it, it wouldn’t be Ms. Kamman’s class without grammar! We have been taught how to use adverbs and adjectives correctly (adverb!) and how to use them to enhance our writing. What was most fun this quarter was the persuasive unit and the vocabulary reviews. It was fun writing about a topic that we were passionate about and defending our opinions through our arguments and research. We even had some strong debates that lasted for a couple of days! The vocabu-lary reviews were also a lot of fun: Ms. Kamman’s plunger game is our favorite. There is nothing more fun than shoving a plunger at the board! To work on spelling, we also play “Sparkle” which helps us memorize the pronunciation and spelling of difficult words.

We do a lot of activities in Social Studies. Truthfully, it is one of my favorite classes! For 3

rd quarter, we completed

group research and presented our findings over science and philosophy in the Medieval Ages. We have just finished up the entire medieval unit which was really interesting (especially the bubonic plague!). For every unit, Mr. Greenwell gives us study guides to guide us through the material and to help us remem-ber what we have learned. They also help us prepare for the tests.

I really like how we do group research projects in Social Studies. They allow us to work together and I like presenting what we find to the class. Some other units that we have stud-ied this year include the country of Africa and the prehistoric civilization.

For each unit, we do fun activities like shield making and creating a Coat of Arms. We created shields which incorpo-rated aspects of a city that we created, and we also drew our own Coat of Arms based off of our family heritage.

Social Studies is a lot of fun and I can’t wait to see what we learn in 4

th quarter.

MathMathMathMath

In math for third quarter, we learned about shapes. One project that we did with shapes involved cutting out a variety of shapes and then we matched their pic-tures with their definitions and formulas for area. We then mounted them on construction paper so that it was more durable. This was a good project because it helped us remember the different shapes and it was a “cheat sheet” for finding area.

We also completed a circle graph activity that used M&M’s. In class, PowerPoints help us find area and sur-face area for different shapes and we also worked in stations around the room to help us learn different math concepts.

Mr. Grothaus always offers extra credit opportuni-ties such as finding out information about great mathe-maticians. We also complete a Problem of the Day when we walk into class. These problems, along with the Grab Bags, will help us on the upcoming OAA’s.

SCIENCE Science classes have recently completed "Changes over

Time". The highlight of the unit was the Fossil Lab where students studied samples, made rubbings, learned about how to spot a fossil and created fossil models. Many 7C students brought in local fossils that will go into the Butterfly Garden. I’m sure that Ms. Morris is very happy with all the fossils that she has collected. The students have also done a “yellow perch lab” which consisted of learning about the yellow perch population in Lake Erie. With questions like “About how many eggs does a female yellow perch lay?” and “what is the optimum yield?” the students are sure to learn! Currently, we are working on "Populations and Communities". It seems strange that science keeps overlapping math (population density calculations) and social studies (effect of bubonic plague on populations), but that is the wonderful thing about science: it’s eve-rywhere!
