The leo wore for the season opener was the creation of Florida's freshmen - Nicole Ellis, Amy Ferguson, Elizabeth Mahlich and Kailey Tissue. The leo wore versus Alabama on Feb. 20 was designed by the juniors. UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn also created a leo, which was worn by the Gators in the Jan. 16 dual meet with Auburn.

2009 Notables… • The Gators advanced to the NCAA Championships based on its win April 4 at the NCAA North Central Region Championships (196.775). It was the fifth consecutive region win for UF and the 10th in the program's history. A Gator finished among the top three in every event, including Corey Hartung claiming the balance beam (9.95) and sharing the floor exercise (9.925) titles. She won the all-around (39.55) and uneven bars (9.95) plus shared the vault win (9.90). She was also runner-up in beam (9.85) and floor (9.85). It was the third SEC Gymnast of the Week honor of her career. • Three Gators (Amanda Castillo, Corey Hartung, Melanie Sinclair) picked up all-around wins in 2009. Those three have taken the all-around win in six of the 12 meets of 2009. • Florida drew an average of 5,704 per meet in 2009 - the third-highest average in the program's history.

Meet Coach Faehn Rhonda Faehn, the 2007 National Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches Association Coach of the Year, is in her seventh season as the Gators' head coach in 2009. Since her arrival, Florida has reset every team event record plus set the team scoring record three times. In 2004, UF reached the NCAA Super Six team final for the first time since 1998, taking fifth overall. A school-record seven Gator gymnasts picked up 12 All-America honors in 2004. The Gators again reached the NCAA Super Six final in 2006, taking fourth. Four Gators picked up a total of six All-America honors in 2006r. The 2007 Gators were third in NCAA Super Six competition, matching the team’s second-highest finish ever in NCAA action. Five Gators earned a school-record 15 All-America honors in 2007. The 2008 Gators finished fourth and five Gators again matched the school-record of 15 All-America honors. In her first season, Florida finished seventh at the 2003 NCAA Championships and four Gators picked up a total of six All-America honors. At the 2005 NCAA Championships, UF took seventh overall and one gymnast earned All-America honors. Faehn shared the 2003 National Association Gymnastics Coaches SE Region Coach of the Year award and won the award outright in 2005. In 2006 and 2007, she was named the Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year. Faehn brought experience at the sport's highest level to the Florida program. A member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team and an All-American at UCLA, Faehn brought with her nine years of experience coaching at the club and collegiate levels.

Faehn was an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska (1999-02) and assistant coach for the Huskers for three seasons before being elevated to Associate Head Coach in the fall of 2001. Four of the Huskers' five NCAA Super Six appearances were achieved with Faehn on the UN staff and during that time, the team twice posted Super Six finishes of fifth (2001 and '02) and took fourth at the 2000 event. The five SEC teams are the most from any conference in 2009. This also marks the 16th consecutive season the SEC has sent at least three teams to the NCAA Championships. In addition to the team competition on Thursday, each team will have an individual all-arounder compete at the end of each team’s lineup. These are gymnasts that were the top two all-arounders in their region meet that were not a part of a qualifying team. Senior Adrianne Perry of Missouri is the individual all-arounder that will compete with the University of Florida. The podium, which raises the competitive apparatus above floor level, is often used for national and international championship competitions. It provides the audience with a clear view of the competing gymnast. The 2004 NCAA Championships in Los Angeles were the first collegiate championships held on podium and a podium was again used at the 2005 event in Auburn, Ala, and last year in Athens, Ga. The arenas used in 2006 (Oregon State's Gill Coliseum) and 2007 (University of Utah's Huntsman Center) could not accommodate the podium. The past four Southeastern Conference Championships have been on podium. Florida will have a podium when the NCAA Championships come to Gainesville in 2010.

NCAA North Central Region Recap A slow start seemed to give the No. 6 Florida gymnastics team momentum at the NCAA North Central Region Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, as the Gators collected their fifth consecutive region team title with their top 2009 road total of 196.775.

A Gator finished among the top three in every event. Senior All-American Corey Hartung was runner-up in the all-around with a season-best 39.525. She led four Gators among the meet’s top six all-arounders. Junior Maranda Smith was fourth at 39.325, followed by freshman Elizabeth Mahlich (5th/39.20) and junior All-American Melanie Sinclair (6th/39.175). Hartung earned a collegiate-best balance beam mark of 9.95 to collect the second NCAA regional beam title of her career. She also shared her second career region floor title with Denver’s Jessica Lopez at 9.925. Smith shared third in vault at 9.90 and was among a five-way tie for second at 9.85 (including Hartung and Sinclair) in the meet’s uneven bars competition. Gator Gymnastics Meet Notes

Eight is Enough The Gators used eight gymnasts in their NCAA North Central Regional win on April 4. It was one more than UF used in the March 21 Southeastern Conference Championships. Despite the short roster, UF did have six in each event lineup at the NCAA North Central Regionals. The Gators’ winning total of 196.775 is their top road score of 2009 and just a tenth away from their season high. The eight Gator competitors matched the lowest number of participating gymnasts in 2009 regional competition. Five other teams used eight gymnastics in regional meets, including three other regional championship teams - Arkansas, LSU and Utah. Five of Florida’s eight gymnasts competed as all-arounders. It was the third time in the last four meets Florida used five all-arounders. Florida's five all-arounders was the most of any of the 36 teams that competed in NCAA Regional action on April 4. Three Gators turned in a total of four collegiate- or season-best scores at the NCAA North Central Regionals: Name Evt Score Season Best Collegiate Best Alicia Goodwin BB 9.875 √ √ Corey Hartung AA 39.525 √ BB 9.95 √ √ Ashley Kerr V 9.60 √ √ Seven Takes Third at SECs Florida turned in its then-highest road score of the season, 196.75, to take third at the Southeastern Conference Championships in Nashville, Tenn., on March 21. Alabama won the meet title at 197.30 and previously undefeated Georgia was runner-up at 196.925. UF raised its 2009 road best to 196.775 in its NCAA North Central Regional win. The performance was a surprise to perhaps all but the team, as the Gators have been hit hard by injuries this season. A total of seven Gators were available for SECs. In the week prior to SECs, Florida lost junior All-American Amanda Castillo with a partial tear of her left Achilles and sophomore Alicia Goodwin with a sprain her left knee. Those two joined three that suffered season-ending injuries earlier this season (Nicole Ellis, Kailey Tissue and Rebekah Zaiser). The short-handed Gators were only able to put five in its uneven bars lineup, but still posted its top bars total of 49.375 since Jan. 30. Three Gators turned in a total of four collegiate- or season-best scores at SECs.

She is the fourth Gator to earn the perfect mark on bars and the only one to post a 10.0 on multiple occasions. It was her second 10.0 wearing pink, as her first perfect bars mark came in 2007 when Florida played host to its first Gators Link to Pink event on Feb. 16, 2007. Florida has participated in four breast cancer awareness meets during Sinclair's career and she's won at least a share of the bars title in each one. She shared the Jan. 27, 2007 dual bars title at Georgia with a mark of 9.95. She also used a 9.95 to win the Feb.15, 2008 Gators Link to Pink bar title. Sinclair and Georgia's Courtney Kupets are the only two gymnasts in the nation this season to earn a bars mark of 10.0. Pair back from Retirement Now Key Contributors In a state with a significant population of retirees, two that gave up that title are now key contributors to the Gator gymnastics team. Two of Florida’s all-around competitors, juniors Courtney Gladys and Maranda Smith, returned after retiring from the sport due to injuries. Gladys left the sport at age 13, but returned to gymnastics at age 17. She walked on the Gator team in the fall of 2007 and continued to work to regain her skills. Her vault performance Jan. 11, 2008 was her first since the spring of 2002 - a six-year competitive gap. She made her first appearance as an all-arounder since 2002 in the March 6 Michigan dual. Smith competed for UCLA in the first two meets of the 2006 season before a shin fracture sidelined her. She left the sport briefly, but started training again at her club gym after returning home. Smith enrolled at UF in January of 2008, competing primarily on the uneven bars. She's competed as an all-arounder in the last eight meets and is ranked among the nation's top 20 for vault, bars and floor.

Injuries Depleting Gators Junior All-American Amanda Castillo is the latest Gator to see her 2009 season end with an injury. She suffered a partial tear of her left Achilles tendon and underwent surgery March 25. Senior All-American Corey Hartung made her first all-around appearance since Feb. 20 at the Southeastern Conference Championships. She missed part of the Feb. 28 dual at Georgia and the Michigan and Utah duals due to a third-degree strain of her left soleus muscle. Sophomore Alicia Goodwin returned to UF's bar and beam lineups at the April 4 NCAA North Central Regional. She missed the league meet after spraining her left knee in the team's final practice before departing for the SEC Championships. The Gators’ current injury list includes:

Amanda Castillo

Partial tear of left Achilles tendon; underwent surgery March 25

Nicole Ellis Hip injury – underwent surgery during Spring Break Kailey Tissue

Underwent meniscus surgery during Spring Break

Rebekah Zaiser

broken bone in right foot suffered in Jan. 13 practice

Three Gators with Nebraska Ties UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn is in her seventh year as the head of the Gator program. Prior to her arrival at UF in May of 2002, Faehn was a Nebraska assistant coach from 1999-02, earning the 2001 National Assistant Coach of the Year award. Two other members of UF's coaching staff have ties to the Cornhusker program. UF Assistant Coach Adrian Burde was a Nebraska assistant coach from 2001-06 and was named the 2003 National Assistant Coach of the Year. UF Volunteer Coach Jeremy Miranda was the NU women's gymnastics team manager for the 2006 and '07 seasons. Five All-Arounders Florida has used five all-arounders in three of its last four meets. Five all-arounders were prevalent in the 1994 season, as the Gators used five all-arounders in the final 10 meets. Since 1994, Florida has used five all-arounders in the 2008 (once) and 2009 (three times) seasons. Florida's five vs. Michigan on March 6 included one making her all-around debut. Junior Courtney Gladys made her first all-around appearance since a club competitor in 2002, tying for fourth at 39.225. Amanda Castillo won the title at 39.425, while teammate Maranda Smith was third at 39.30. All-American Corey Hartung returned to the all-around lineup for the March 21 Southeastern Conference Championships, replacing Castillo who suffered a season-ending injury March 13. Freshman Elizabeth Mahlich, junior Melanie Sinclair, Gladys and Smith have performed as all-arounders in each of Florida’s three 2009 meets that used five all-arounders. In 2009, six other teams have competed five or more all-arounders at least once - Air Force (two times), California (6x), MIT (1x), Southern Utah (1x), Utah (1x) and Western Michigan (2x).

Sinclair’s All-Around Win versus Alabama Earns her SEC Gymnast of the Week Junior All-American Melanie Sinclair claimed the Feb. 20 Florida vs. Alabama all-around title with a Gator season-best total of 39.55. It was her third all-around win of 2009. Her performance versus the Tide earned Sinclair the Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Week honor - the third of her career. Sinclair opened the meet with a pair of event wins. An aggressive routine showcased by ruler-straight handstands gave Sinclair her fifth uneven bars title of the season. She received a 9.95 – matching the evening’s high mark in any event. She and teammate Maranda Smith shared the evening’s vault title with Alabama’s Morgan Dennis and Kayla Hoffman, as all turned in marks of 9.90. Sinclair was second in the evening’s floor competition (9.875) and shared second in the beam standings at 9.85. She leads UF in 2009 with 14 event titles. Sinclair holds the following spots in the March 23 national rankings: No. 14 in all-around (39.430 regional qualifying score) and No. 3 in bars (9.920 RQS). Kerr Hits as a Last Minute Replacement The 30-second touch was all junior Ashley Kerr needed before making her first collegiate appearance in the balance beam lineup. At the March 13 dual at Utah, junior All-American Amanda Castillo suffered a partial tear of her left Achilles tendon in a landing during her floor routine and was unable to compete on balance beam. Only five eligible Gators at the meet had any experience in a competitive beam lineup as a collegiate. Kerr told the UF coaches she could do a routine so she was added to the lineup. She got a hug from Castillo and then used the 30-second touch to warm-up her skills since she did not participate in the pre-meet warm-up for the event. Kerr was UF’s fifth performer and posted a 9.50. It was her second collegiate-best for the evening, as earlier she earned a 9.60 on vault. Sticking with Gymnastics Fresh off her 10.0 uneven bars routine on Jan. 30, All-American Melanie Sinclair took a swing at another sport on Sunday, Feb. 1. Sinclair among several UF student-athletes and coaches (including head men's basketball coach Billy Donovan, baseball coach Kevin O'Sullivan and softball coach Tim Walton) who took part in the Swinging for Cancer Benefit to raise money for cancer research at Shands UF Cancer Hospital. They all tried to get a hit off of senior All-American pitcher Stacey Nelson of the Gators' No. 1 ranked softball team. Sinclair, swinging a bat for the first time in her life, didn't make contact in the three balls she saw. But the other representative of the Gator gymnastics team, All-American Nicola Willis (she finished her eligibility last year and is now serving as a team manager), made contact on her final ball to send a dribbler up the middle. She was one of only a few that made contact or fouled off a ball. No one managed to get the ball out of the infield. That is understandable as Nelson allowed only two home runs and 38 earned runs in 352.1 innings pitched in 2008.

Goodwin Uses Collegiate-Best for First Win Sophomore Alicia Goodwin shared her first collegiate event win with teammates Corey Hartung and Melanie Sinclair, as each turned in a 9.925 in the UF-Auburn dual meet uneven bars competition. That score set Goodwin’s collegiate-best for the event (previous best: 9.875 versus LSU 2/15/08). She has been a part of Florida’s bar lineup in 11 meets of the 2009 season and added another bar win at Michigan State on Feb. 14 with her mark of 9.90. Another collegiate best gave Goodwin her first win on the balance beam. She posted a 9.875 to take that event title versus Michigan. Goodwin matched that mark at Utah (tied for third) and in NCAA North Central Regional competition (tied for second). Goodwin was sidelined for the March 21 Southeastern Conference Championships after suffering a knee sprain in the March 18 practice. She returned to UF’s bar and beam lineups at the NCAA North Central Regionals, tying for second on beam when she matched her collegiate-best of 9.875. Great Semester for the Gators For the second consecutive fall semester, the Gator gymnasts earned a team grade point average of 3.31 (including Nicole Ellis and Rebekah Zaiser each posting a 4.0). Last year, a total of 10 Gator gymnasts received either Academic All-Southeastern Conference or SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll honors. Zaiser was named the SEC Scholar-Athlete for the sport of gymnastics at the league championships last March. In addition, the Gators return three this season that earned 2008 National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) Scholastic All- America honors –Alicia Goodwin, Ashley Kerr and Zaiser. Hartung 4x All-SEC Senior All-American Corey Hartung earned her fourth All-Southeastern Conference honor after taking fourth in 2009 league championship all-around competition. She is one of just three Gators to earn All-SEC honors each year as a collegiate. Other four-time All-SEC Gators include Elfi Schlegel (1983-86) and Chrissy Van Fleet (1997-00). Seven Gators on SEC Academic Honor Roll Seven Gator gymnasts were named to the 2008-09 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll by league commissioner Mike Slive. Florida's seven representative include senior Corey Hartung, junior Amanda Castillo, Courtney Gladys, Ashley Kerr, Maranda Smith and Rebekah Zaiser and sophomore Alicia Goodwin.

Building a Crowd The Florida program continues to build their fan base. Since the arrival of Head Coach Rhonda Faehn for the 2003 season, UF has doubled its average attendance since her first campaign. A record crowd of 10,855 were on hand for the dual versus then No. 1 Florida and then No. 2 Georgia for the Jan. 18, 2008 dual. That crowd broke the Stephen C. O’Connell Center gymnastics record set in 1989 versus Alabama (10,651). In 2008, Florida averaged 6,358 per meet – second only to the 1989 Gator team’s attendance average of 6,455. Florida's average ranked fourth in the nation. This season, UF averaged 5,704 per meet - the third-largest in school history. Maranda's First Wins Florida junior Maranda Smith used a then collegiate-best of 9.90 to share the floor exercise title with teammate Corey Hartung in the Jan. 9 season opener versus Oklahoma. It was the first event win of Smith's collegiate career. She raised her collegiate floor best to 9.925 with her win at Michigan State Feb. 14 and equaled that mark with her runner-up finish at Georgia. In Florida’s second meet of 2009, Smith made her first appearance in a competitive vault lineup since 2006. She won the UF-Auburn dual vault title with a mark of 9.90. Smith upped Florida’s season-best to 9.95 with her vault win versus Kentucky. Smith started at UCLA in 2006, appearing in two meets before a stress fracture in her shin ended her season. She sat out the 2007 season, returning home to enroll in a junior college and train at her club. Smith joined the Florida team in January of 2008, appearing in Florida's uneven bars and an occasional floor competitive lineup. Smith is ranked among the nation's top 10 in three events - vault (No. T-21 regional qualifying score 9.885), bars (No. T-10, 9.890) and floor (No. T9, 9.905 RQS). She made her first competitive appearance on the balance beam since April of 2005 on Feb. 6 after just a week of training the event. She set her collegiate beam best with her runner-up performance versus Michigan (9.85) and equaled that mark in the next meet at Utah. Gator Gymnastics Meet Notes

Meet 1 No. 3 Florida versus No. 10 Oklahoma Jan. 9, 2009 Stephen C. O’Connell Center/Gainesville,

Fla. The No. 3 University of Florida gymnastics team (1-0) opened the 2009 season with a 196.50-195.075 dual meet win versus No. 10 Oklahoma (0-1) Friday evening in front of a Stephen C. O’Connell Center crowd of 4,856. It is the nation’s top total posted in this very young season and the total was the fourth-highest opening total in school history. The Gators admitted the excitement of the season opener was elevated thanks to the Florida football team’s 24-14 win last night over Oklahoma in the FedEx BCS Championship game. It wasn’t a perfect performance for the Gator gymnasts, but no falls were counted toward the final team total. Six of Florida’s routines Friday were by gymnasts making their collegiate debut on an event. “We were all really excited being out there. Feeding off of last night (football championship) really helped too. We had some highs and we had some low but it’s the first meet of the season and I think we did really well,” junior All-American Amanda Castillo said. For the third season in a row, the season-opening all-around title went to junior All-American Melanie Sinclair. Her total of 39.425 gave her the fourth all-around title of her collegiate career. She opened the meet by winning the first two events. Sinclair used a 9.875 to claim the third vault title as a Gator and upped her career total of uneven bar wins to 17 with the evening’s top mark of 9.90. She also shared third on balance beam with teammate Corey Hartung at 9.85. Hartung was second in the all-around at 39.375. Sinclair said she was ready for tonight’s competition, thanks to the team’s repetitions in the practice gym. Friday’s performance was similar to practice, only with many more people watching. “I feel like we prepared really, really well. We did a lot of mock meets and pressure sets. That helped a lot. It felt a lot like a practice with a little more adrenaline,” Sinclair said. “It helped a lot with our confidence being the first competition.” Florida’s top event total of the evening (49.25) came on the balance beam. The event title was claimed by Castillo, whose stellar performance was punctuated by her stuck double-back dismount. She was rewarded with a 9.90, just a fraction off her collegiate beam best of 9.925. It was the sixth beam title of her Gator career. The floor exercise title was shared by a pair of Gators at 9.90. For Hartung, it was her 17th floor title as a Gator, while it was the first floor win for junior Maranda Smith. The mark was a collegiate best for Smith. Junior Rebekah Zaiser also matched her collegiate best on floor Friday, sharing third overall at 9.825 with Oklahoma’s Kristin Smith and Ashley Jackson. Florida’s four freshmen all appeared in Friday’s meet, either as part of the competitive lineup or as an exhibition performer. Freshman Amy Ferguson opened her Florida career with a mark of 9.75 on floor and received the meet’s Ernestine Weaver Award for the most entertaining routine. But it was the experience of competing in front of the Gator fans that she will remember most. “It was amazing. Words can’t even describe the feeling I had. I just loved showing off to the crowd. I had so much adrenaline,” Ferguson said. “It was awesome.” There was at least one freshman in each of the four competitive lineups Friday and UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn was pleased with their Gator premieres. “I think they did a great job. It was great to see her face after Elizabeth (Mahlich) hit her beam routine. Nicole (Ellis) after her vault and Amy after her floor – it was wonderful to see their excitement. I think it was fun for them. They got their first taste of it tonight. This is where they are going to learn and grow from this point on.” Faehn thought Friday’s performance was a good starting point for the season. “I think it was a decent start. It’s always a big question mark, the first meet of the year. We have so many new faces. It’s a very young team. It’s really different from what we had in the past with so many freshman and we rested Amanda (Castillo) from floor,” Faehn said. “But overall, they did great and responded really well. We have some areas that we need to go back and work on - some skill choice and also some lineup orders. We’ll go back and evaluate and work on the little things. All and all, I think it’s a great start.”

Meet 2 No. 1 Florida versus No. 4 Auburn Jan. 16, 2009 Stephen C. O’Connell Center/Gainesville,

Fla. For the second consecutive year, the No. 1 University of Florida gymnastics team (2-0, 1-0 SEC) needed a big performance on the final event to take the win in its dual meet with No. 4 Auburn (1-2, 0-2 SEC). Last year, Florida used a six-for-six balance beam set to take the win at Auburn. This year, the Gators needed to hit their floor exercise routines to overcome the 0.175 deficit after the third rotation.

A less-than-stellar beam set put the Gators in the negative position heading into the final rotation. Although the team wasn’t aware of the actual score, the Gators had a sense of what the situation was.

“I didn’t know the total, but I had a feeling after beam that we were behind,” junior Maranda Smith said. “We knew that we needed to hit on floor and we felt confident that we could do it.”

Florida’s floor set total of 49.45 – the nation’s highest of this young season – moved the Gators past the Tigers for a 196.50-196.25 win. Four Gators finished among the meet’s top three floor performers, including the event winner Corey Hartung. She matched her collegiate best of 9.95 for the sixth time of her career to win her second consecutive floor title. Smith matched her collegiate-best set a week ago of 9.90 to take second. Three shared third at 9.875 – Florida’s Melanie Sinclair and Elizabeth Mahlich and Auburn’s A.J. Mills.

The Gators opened up the meet with strong performances on vault and uneven bars. Smith, making her first appearance in a competitive vault lineup since her freshman season at UCLA in 2006, turned in a collegiate-best 9.90 for her first vault win. Sinclair and freshman Nicole Ellis shared third at 9.85, helping UF to a season-best total of 49.225.

The top event total of the evening was turned in by the Gators on their next event, the uneven bars. Florida’s total of 49.50 – also the nation’s top total so far in 2009 – was boosted by a three-way Gator tie for first at 9.925. The score was a collegiate-best for two-thirds of the bar winners – sophomore Alicia Goodwin and Hartung. Sinclair was also among the top bar performers, sharing her second consecutive bar win of the season.

Although no falls were used toward Florida’s balance beam total of 48.325, the event total reflects several balance checks and wobbles. Sinclair was Florida’s top performer on the event, taking fourth at 9.80. The Tigers swept the beam in the final standings – Puckett (9.90), Rachel Inniss (9.875) and A.J. Mills (9.85).

Hartung picked up her 13th all-around title as a Gator Friday with her season-best total of 39.475. Sinclair edged her season-best up to 39.45 to take second.

“Corey is absolutely wonderful to see. She did such a beautiful job. She’s very consistent and somebody we can always depend on,” UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn said. “She’s beautiful out there. For her to go out there and nail it like she did (on floor) was just great. Every time Corey goes out there and competes she has the potential to win an all-around.”

Faehn sees Friday’s performance as a chance to learn for her young team.

“That was one of our best bar performances of the year. They were so hyped up. We had to take a step back, regain our composure and calm down (before beam),” Faehn said. “We’re going to go back to the gym and put in some practices to make sure exactly who is going to be in the lineup and who can handle the pressure. To go through a situation like that was a great learning experience for our athletes. They turned around, fought and did better than we had anticipated.”

The Gators were without junior Rebekah Zaiser, who is out for the season after breaking a bone in her right foot while practicing her floor routine Tuesday. Zaiser led off the UF beam set in every meet last season and also was UF’s first performer on beam and floor last Friday in the 2009 opener versus Oklahoma. Hartung was pleased with the way the team reacted to its challenge Friday.

“It went pretty well for the second meet of the year. We had a little trouble on beam but we pulled through and finished very strong on floor. We had an amazing vault and an amazing bar so I am proud of the team for that,” Hartung said. “We had a couple of injuries so we had to put a lot of the freshmen in for this meet and they proved themselves really well tonight so I am proud of the freshmen and the whole team.”

Gator Gymnastics Meet Notes

Meet 3 No. 1 Florida at No. 8 Arkansas Jan. 23, 2009 Barnhill Arena/Fayetteville, Ark. The No. 1 University of Florida gymnastics team (2-1, 1-1 SEC) lost to No. 8 Arkansas (3-1, 1-0 SEC), 196.375-195.425, Jan. 23 in front of a Barnhill Arena crowd of 2,714. It was Florida’s first loss to Arkansas in the two team’s 19 all-time meetings. Florida owned a 0.525 lead heading into the final rotation, but trouble on the balance beam hurt the Gators Friday. Florida’s final three performers – Amanda Castillo, Corey Hartung and Alicia Goodwin - all recorded falls, forcing UF to count two falls toward its beam total of 47.90. The Gators last were forced to count a fall in its beam lineup Feb. 22, 2008 at UNC. The Razorbacks took all but one event title Friday. Arkansas’ Casey Jo Magee collected her third consecutive all-around title Friday with a school-record total of 39.525. She also won the beam at 9.90. Jaime Pisani took floor with the evening’s high mark of all events at 9.925 and she shared the vault title with teammate Michelle Stout. Florida’s Melanie Sinclair used a mark of 9.90 to pick up her third-straight uneven bars title. Three Gators made their first collegiate appearance in three different events at Arkansas, turning in UF’s top scores for each event. Freshman Elizabeth Mahlich, making her first all-around appearance as a Gator, took third overall at 39.325. Freshman Kailey Tissue, making her collegiate debut in a competitive lineup, anchored UF’s vault lineup with a 9.875. She tied for third overall with teammate Maranda Smith. Junior Courtney Gladys moved from an exhibition appearance last week to a member of Florida’s beam lineup Friday. She took second overall at 9.875. Smith and Hartung led UF on floor with marks of 9.875, which tied for fourth overall. Lack of training time due to injuries was evident tonight, UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn said, but the Gators will need to find a way to get the training in to avoid repeating this result. “We are extremely disappointed in our performance this evening. It was not Florida gymnastics,” Faehn said. “It’s not we are expecting for a road competition or any competition for that matter. We have to go back and analyze why this happened. I think this will definitely light a fire in this team. It should show them that miracles will not happen on the competition floor if you don’t put in the training during the week. Right now we are struggling with a little bit of a depth issue and injuries. Athletes aren’t able to put in repetitions and numbers and it is impacting their performance. Confidence comes from doing the routines over and over again. It shows them that it’s not just going to happen. I told them that I don’t care who it is, what year they are or how many times they’ve been in the lineup in the past - we are going to find the lineup made up of the athletes that are going to hit under any circumstance. It’s a hard knock, but we take these challenges so that it makes us stronger. Gymnast Vault Bars Beam Floor All-

Meet 4 No. 5 Florida versus Kentucky Jan. 30, 2009 Stephen C. O’Connell Center/Gainesville, Fla. Melanie Sinclair knew it was going to be a good day when she woke up this morning. That feeling turned out to be prophetic as the All-American’s 10.0 on the uneven bars led the No. 5 University of Florida gymnastics team (3-1, 2-1 SEC) to a 195.925-193.85 win Friday over Kentucky (1-3, 0-3 SEC) in front of a crowd of 8,019 for the Third Annual Gators Link to Pink meet. “Actually this morning I woke up and I honestly felt so good that I felt I could do anything today. When I was warming up on bars, everything just came so fluidly. It was easy to focus on the handstands, it was easy to just take it step by step and whenever it’s like that you just have to do your thing.” And her thing tonight was matching her collegiate- and school-record bars mark for the third time in her career. It was her second 10.0 wearing pink, as her first perfect bars mark came in 2007 when Florida played host to its first Gators Link to Pink event on Feb. 16, 2007. She is the fourth Gator to earn the perfect mark on bars and the only one to post a 10.0 on multiple occasions. UF junior Maranda Smith set her collegiate bars best to share second overall with teammate Corey Hartung at 9.90. UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn saw the possibility of a 10.0 during warm-up. “That (10.0) was just unbelievable. When she was actually warming up, I went over to her. She was so aggressive and hitting every handstand. That’s the area where she always feels like she needs to hit. I said, ‘That’s 10.0 material right there,’” Faehn said. “She did the bar routine and it was amazing. She hit every handstand. She scored a couple of 10.0’s her first year here. She’s capable of it every time she steps up.” Florida started off the meet with strong performances on vault and bars. The Gators also saw their season-high individual vault mark move to 9.95 tonight with Smith’s performance on the event. Since joining the competitive vault lineup for the Gators’ second meet of the season, Smith had led UF on the event. Her collegiate-best mark gave Smith her second vault title of the last three meets. Freshman Elizabeth Mahlich matched her collegiate-best of 9.85 to share second on the event with Sinclair. Hartung picked up her first balance beam title of the season, matching UF’s season-best mark of 9.90. It was the 15th beam win for the three-time All-American on the event. But for the second consecutive meet, Florida was forced to count a fall toward its beam team total as no other Gator posted a mark above 9.80 on the event. The runner-up beam position Friday was shared at 9.75 by Kentucky’s Hillary Ferguson and Heather Hite. Hartung knows the Gators have the ability to perform well on beam, just like they did in the opening meet of the season. “Our bodies know what to do and we are physically able to do it every single time. We train it perfectly everyday,” Hartung said. “It is just about mentally preparing ourselves better before we compete.” Although not happy with the team’s beam performance, Faehn thought the team showed improvement in their attack of the event this week. “We have definitely trained a lot harder in the gym this week and we’ve made a lot of corrections. I feel like we made aggressive mistakes today instead of going into it like we’re afraid of it and that’s the first step,” Faehn said. “Last week we had an awful meet, making silly mistakes and performing cautiously so going aggressive is better. That’s just the next step to hitting your routines perfect.” Sinclair picked up her second event win when she matched her season-best of 9.875 to top Friday’s floor competition. It was her third floor title as a Gator. Smith posted her third top-two floor finish of the season with her runner-up mark of 9.85. Mahlich shared third at 9.825 with UK’s Ferguson. The all-around win went to Sinclair, as she matched her season-best of 39.45 for her second win of 2009 and her fifth as a Gator. Hartung was second at 39.325 and Mahlich took third (39.15). Faehn saw some improvement tonight and especially liked the Gators’ top performances. Florida continues to have some gymnasts performing in limited roles due to injuries and Faehn is hoping those days will soon be behind the team to help establish consistency. “We definitely did better on vault and bars. I was so proud of Maranda (Smith). Maranda is really competing aggressively like a star and she’s competing confidently. That is wonderful to see. It was also wonderful to see Melanie’s 10.0 and Corey (Hartung) winning beam, which she’s capable of doing every time,” Faehn said. “We could have done better on floor. We have to get Amanda (Castillo) back into the floor and vault lineup. Once we’re able to get our athletes on track and in the lineup, we’re going to start to see some consistency with our scores.” Gymnast Vault Bars Beam Floor All-Around Amanda Castillo 9.85 8.725 Nicole Ellis 9.775 Amy Ferguson 9.8 Courtney Gladys 9.775 9.1 9.7 Alicia Goodwin 9.85 Corey Hartung 9.825 9.9 9.9 9.7 39.325 Elizabeth Mahlich 9.85 9.8 9.675 9.825 39.15 Melanie Sinclair 9.85 10.0 9.725 9.875 39.45 Maranda Smith 9.95 9.9 9.85 9.725 Team Totals 49.25 49.50 48.125 49.05 195.925

Gator Gymnastics Meet Notes

Meet 5 No. 8 Florida at No. 11 LSU Feb. 6, 2009 Maravich Assembly Center/Baton Rouge, La. The No. 8 University of Florida gymnastics team (3-2, 2-2 SEC) dropped a 196.80-195.825 decision Friday at No. 11 LSU (7-2, 2-2 SEC) in front of a Pete Maravich Assembly Center crowd of 3,127. UF opened the meet with a bar set that had some breaks, but no falls, resulting in a season-low 48.975. The middle of Florida’s lineup led the Gators Friday, as juniors Amanda Castillo and Maranda Smith each stuck their landings to earn identical marks of 9.90. They shared second with LSU’s Ashleigh Clare-Kearney. LSU junior Susan Jackson won the event with her mark of 9.925. “It was a little bit of a rough start for us on bars. We really rely on that event to catapult us in the events that we have been a little bit rougher. There was the mistake by Melanie (Sinclair – caught her foot on first release) and then some really rough dismount landings,” UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn said. “We really tried to build the team up mentally. I thought they came back strong on vault and floor.” On vault, the Gators turned in marks of 9.80 - 9.85 throughout its lineup to tally a 49.175. Smith, junior Melanie Sinclair and freshman Nicole Ellis led UF on the event Friday with their matching marks of 9.85. They shared third overall with LSU’s Gloria Johnson. Jackson, the defending NCAA vault champion, took the win at 9.90 while Clare-Kearney was second at 9.875. Florida’s floor performers posted a team total of 49.325 – its second-highest total of the season. The top score for the Gators was a 9.90 by both Hartung and Smith, which tied for second overall. Juniors Courtney Gladys and Sinclair also turned in marks 9.85, marking a collegiate-best for Gladys. The Gators were able to put aside several delays during their beam set due to lengthy judge’s conferences to turn in hit routines by their first five competitors. The result of one of those discussions was Gladys’ beam score being reduced from a 9.825 to 9.525 after a three-tenths neutral deduction was taken when the springboard wasn’t removed after her mount. “The scores were not indicative of our performance on beam. I think it was actually our second-best performance of the season. Courtney (Gladys) did a phenomenal beam routine. The neutral deduction for the springboard seemed to come out of left field, but now we know. It won’t happen again,” Faehn said. “Although there were lots of judge’s conferences and start value issues that seemed to really slow up the momentum on beam, we had some nice routines tonight.” Corey Hartung matched her season-best of 9.90 to earn her second consecutive beam win. She also took third in the all-around with her total of 39.325. LSU’s Clare-Kearney took the all-around (39.625) and floor (9.925) wins. Jackson was runner-up at 39.45. Meet 6 No. 9 Florida at Michigan State Feb. 14, 2009 Jenison Field House/East Lansing, Mich. The Gators’ season-best team total gave the No. 9 University of Florida gymnastics team (4-2, 2-2 SEC) a 196.85-194.775 win Saturday at Michigan State (5-9) in front of a Jenison Field House crowd of 1,222. A spirited Florida team turned in steady performances in each event Saturday to tally its high total of 2009. No falls were counted toward Florida’s final total. Senior All-American Corey Hartung was just a fraction away from her season-best total to claim her 14th career all-around title on the 14th day of February. She posted a 39.45, while junior Maranda Smith was second overall with a collegiate-best total of 39.35. It was the second all-around performance of Smith’s career and her second in eight days. “I was really happy for Corey for winning the all-around. She went for everything and performed aggressively. On her bar routine, she hit every handstand and that’s what we were talking about – going aggressively for everything. It was the same for her beam,” UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn said. “I was also really proud of Maranda for stepping in and doing the all-around again. She hit that beam routine today and her floor was gorgeous. It is no surprise that we did better as a team and those two were on top of the all-around awards podium. They have been working so hard in the gym to help lead this team to the type of performance we are cable of. I think today’s performance will give the team confidence as we go forward.” Florida swept the standings in its first two events Saturday. Sophomore Alicia Goodwin stuck her double front dismount to earn a 9.90. The mark gave Goodwin her second uneven bars title of her Gator career. Three Gators shared second at 9.875 – Amanda Castillo, Smith and Hartung. Florida’s total on bars, 49.325, stands as UF’s second-highest of 2009. The day’s vault title was shared by UF freshman Elizabeth Mahlich and Courtney Gladys at 9.85. Each earned their first collegiate vault victory Saturday and it was a season-best score for both. Mahlich is from Mason, Mich., a town just 15 miles north of East Lansing, Mich. The presence of her family and friends were evident Saturday, as many brought signs to cheer Mahlich for her return home. “It was so fun to see my family and friends in the stands. They were very loud,” Mahlich said. Her performance came after limited vault training due to a slight ankle injury she suffered in last week’s meet at LSU. “It was kind of a pleasant surprise,” Mahlich said. “It was really exciting. I haven’t gotten that score before.” Smith used a collegiate-best 9.925 to win her second floor exercise title of the season. She has been a top floor performer for the Gators, finishing in the top two in four of her five floor competitions this season. Hartung shared second overall at 9.875 with MSU’s Katlyn Roggensack and Emily Lopatofsky. Florida turned in its second-highest 2009 balance beam total with its total of 49.175 on Saturday. Hartung led UF on the event with her third consecutive 9.90 on the event. She took second overall, as the day’s beam title was claimed by sophomore Kelsey Morley with her MSU record mark of 9.975. Sinclair and Mahlich shared third overall at 9.875. Faehn liked what she saw overall today from the Gators. “It was definitely a marked improvement from the past competitions. We did a much better job with our consistency and fighting for every little tenth,” Faehn said. “We did have some little mistakes, but we are definitely moving in the right direction, especially with the limited number of athletes we are dealing with it. But they all are putting everything they have into it. That is exciting to see.” Gymnast Vault Bars Beam Floor All-Around Amanda Castillo 9.800 9.875 9.125 Amy Ferguson 9.825 Courtney Gladys 9.850 9.800 9.825 Alicia Goodwin 9.900 Corey Hartung 9.800 9.875 9.900 9.875 39.450 Elizabeth Mahlich 9.850 9.800 9.875 9.275 38.800 Melanie Sinclair 9.775 9.725 9.875 9.775 39.150 Maranda Smith 9.825 9.875 9.725 9.925 39.350 Team Totals 49.125 49.325 49.175 49.225 196.850

Gator Gymnastics Meet Notes

Meet 7 No. 6 Florida vs No. 8 Alabama Feb. 20, 2009 Stephen C. O’Connell Center/Gainesville, Fla. The No. 6 University of Florida gymnastics team (5-2, 3-2 SEC) edged up its season-best total for the second time in a seven-day span to take the win over No. 8 Alabama (3-4, 2-4 SEC) Friday in front of a Stephen C. O’Connell Center crowd of 7,047 - the eighth-largest crowd in the program’s history. The Gators added 0.025 to their season-high to post a 196.875-195.625 win over the Crimson Tide Friday. Florida led the meet from the beginning, but the largest lead was just the 0.250 margin UF held heading into the final rotation. Alabama was forced to count a fall on beam, allowing Florida to expand its lead on the final rotation to give UF its largest dual meet margin of victory (1.25) in the series history since 1983. Florida surpassed the 49.00 scoring mark for its team total on each event, marking the second consecutive time this season Florida has passed that scoring threshold. No falls were counted toward Florida’s final total. The Gators had some breaks Friday, but were able to attack the next routine with confidence. What the Gators have been doing in the practice gym the last couple of weeks led to that boost in performance and confidence. “Our workouts the past two weeks have led to these performances (at Michigan State on Feb. 14 and tonight). You can’t just go out on the competition floor and do well - it comes from training hard and feeling confident,” UF junior Maranda Smith said. “This week in the gym we’ve just been training so hard, pushing for perfection and doing well in the gym builds our confidence.” UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn liked how her team competed tonight. “I thought they were calm, yet they were really confident and aggressive in their performance and were just really supportive of one another. That was wonderful to see. We still had mistakes here and there. We’re still not where we should be at the end of season, but we’re getting there,” Faehn said. “What’s nice to see is we’re not reacting negatively to the small mistakes. We’re not letting it affect the next performer. They are just really trying to make each routine the best that it can be and to stay positive. I think we accomplished that goal tonight. I was really proud of the athletes.” The Gators claimed at least a share of four of the five event titles Friday. Junior All-American Melanie Sinclair claimed the all-around title with a Florida season-best total of 39.55. It matches the third-highest total of her Gator career. Smith, competing as an all-arounder for the third-consecutive meet, equaled her collegiate-best total to finish as runner-up with her all-around total of 39.35. Sinclair opened the meet with a pair of event wins. She and Smith shared the evening’s vault title with Alabama’s Morgan Dennis and Kayla Hoffman, as all turned in marks of 9.90. An aggressive routine showcased by ruler-straight handstands gave Sinclair her fifth uneven bars title of the season. She received a 9.95 – matching the evening’s high mark in any event. Smith raised her collegiate bars best for the second time this season, upping it to 9.925 to finish as runner-up. Florida was just 0.05 away from its beam season-best Friday, turning in a 49.20. Senior All-American Corey Hartung’s strong and steady routine was punctuated by a stuck round-off 2 1/2 twist dismount. Her 9.95 mark gave Hartung her third beam title of the season. It was the fourth consecutive meet that she has received a score of 9.90 or above for the event. Sinclair shared second overall at 9.85 with UA’s Ricki Lebegern. Alabama junior Morgan Dennis, the 2007 NCAA floor exercise champion, won that event title at 9.925. She was followed by Sinclair, who earned a 9.85. Meet 8 No. 7 Florida at No. 1 Georgia Feb. 28, 2009 Stegeman Coliseum/Athens, Ga. The No. 1 Georgia gymnastics team (10-0, 6-0 SEC) posted the nation’s high score of 2009 to take a 198.20-196.65 win over No. 7 Florida (5-3, 3-3 SEC) Saturday afternoon in front of a sold-out Stegeman Coliseum crowd of 10,224. Georgia senior Courtney Kupets, the nation’s top-ranked all-arounder, won that event title Saturday at 39.85 - the nation’s top total of 2009. She collected at least a share of every apparatus title Saturday, including posting a 10.0 floor mark. She used a 9.975 to win the uneven bars, a 9.925 for the vault title and shared the day’s balance beam crown with teammate Courtney McCool at 9.95. Florida’s Melanie Sinclair upped her Florida season-high all-around total to 39.575 Saturday to tie UGA senior Tiffany Tolnay for second overall. UF junior Amanda Castillo, making her first all-around appearance of the season, was fourth at 39.425. Florida was without the full services of senior All-American Corey Hartung Saturday. A muscle strain in her left calf kept her out of the vault and floor exercise lineups. It ended her stretch of consecutive all-around performances at 18, which began Feb. 1, 2008 in the home dual versus Arkansas. The Gators opened the meet on the uneven bars, posting a 49.275. Three tied for the Gators’ high mark of 9.875 on the event – Alicia Goodwin, Maranda Smith and Sinclair. The impact of the team’s injuries hit the Gators on vault. The Gators left themselves with no cushion in the vault lineup as only five competed Saturday. Courtney Gladys sat down on her landing, forcing UF to include a fall in its vault total for the first time since 1999. UF posted a season-low 48.625 on the event. Smith anchored the UF lineup with her mark of 9.90, which tied her for second overall with UGA’s Tiffany Tolnay and Hilary Mauro. “Gosh darn on vault - we were just so short handed. Courtney’s fall – that was just a fluke. She was trying so hard for the stick. And this just happened to be the meet that we didn’t have any extra bodies,” UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn said. “But the best thing was how this team responded. They could have given up knowing that it would be really difficult for us to win. But instead they fought for every little thing and every tenth. It showed their strength of character and their strength of will.” Florida elevated its performances on its final two events, matching or tallying season-high totals for both. The Gators matched its season-high of 49.45 on the floor exercise. That total was boosted by a pair of 9.925s from Sinclair and Smith. The mark set Sinclair’s season-best for floor and equaled Smith’s collegiate-best. They shared second overall in the final floor standings with UGA’s Grace Taylor, Marcia Newby and Tolnay. Florida finished the meet with a season-best 49.30 on the balance beam. Sinclair led UF on the event with her season-high mark of 9.90. She shared third in the final beam standings with UGA’s Grace Taylor and Mauro. Sinclair like how the team upped their performance after the problem on vault. “We had a little mistake on vault, but we overcame that on floor. Everyone did very well. It was a good away meet for us,” Sinclair said. “I think we did really, really well.” Faehn is looking forward to when the Gators will have more options for competitors, but she did see a step in that direction with Castillo’s first all-around performance of 2009. “We still need to get our athletes healthy, but it shows that we are getting more consistent. It was great to have Amanda (Castillo) out there in the all-around for the first time. She hit that beam routine which had a new series and also her double-pike dismount. She coming back,” Faehn said. “I’m really proud of them. I thought they did a great job.” Gymnast Vault Bars Beam Floor All-Around Amanda Castillo 9.85 9.825 9.875 9.875 39.425 Amy Ferguson 9.875 Courtney Gladys 9.3 9.825 9.8 Alicia Goodwin 9.875 Corey Hartung 9.775 9.875 Elizabeth Mahlich 9.7 9.825 9.825 9.85 39.2 Melanie Sinclair 9.875 9.875 9.9 9.925 39.575 Maranda Smith 9.9 9.875 9.65 9.925 39.35 Team Totals 48.625 49.275 49.30 49.45 196.65

Gator Gymnastics Meet Notes

Meet 9 No. 4 Florida vs. No. 14 Michigan March 6, 2009 Stephen C. O’Connell Center/Gainesville, Fla. The No. 4 Florida gymnastics team (6-3, 3-3 SEC) finished its 2009 home schedule with a 196.825-196.325 win over No. 14 Michigan (13-4, 4-0 Big Ten) Friday evening in front of a Stephen C. O’Connell Center crowd of 3,829. Florida’s score was just a fraction away from its season-best of 196.875 set Feb. 20. The meet was tight between the two teams throughout the competition and UF held only a two-tenths lead heading into the final rotation. Florida’s first four floor competitors turned in marks ranging from 9.825 – 9.925 and gave UF the lead it needed to finish the 2009 season with an undefeated home record. A Gator picked up at least a share of every event title Friday. Junior All-American Amanda Castillo, performing as an all-arounder for only the second time this season and the first time in front of the Gator crowd, won that title with a total of 39.425. That total matches her season-best set last week at No. 1 Georgia. Bursitis in her foot has limited her contributions this season, but Castillo is happy to be back as an all-arounder. “I’m just doing it for the team, doing it for the sport and doing it to be back out there. It is one of the best feelings [being] out there. Earlier this season, I was only doing one or two events,” Castillo said. “I didn’t feel like myself. To be back in the all-around - it’s just amazing.” Junior Melanie Sinclair collected three more titles Friday, as she now leads the Gators this season with a total of 14 event wins. She opened the meet with a season-best 9.925 to take third vault win of 2009. Sinclair used a 9.90 to collect her sixth uneven bars win. She shared the evening’s floor exercise title with Michigan’s Kylee Botterman as each turned in season-best marks of 9.925. It was Florida’s Senior Night, but the Gators were without their lone senior, as nine-time All-American Corey Hartung is sidelined with a third degree strain of her left soleus. Hartung did have a chance to perform for a final time in front of the O’Connell Center crowd, as she turned in an exhibition uneven bars routine. She received a warm recognition from the crowd and was honored post-meet for her many contributions to the Gator program. It was a hard Senior Night for UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn. Hartung said afterwards her tears didn’t come until she saw them on Faehn’s face. “I was a mess out there. Corey has just grown so much and is just an unbelievable ambassador for Florida. She is just beautiful all-around and not only in gymnastics but as a person,” Faehn said. “I told her she is going to stick around next year and help us out coaching because I can’t say good-bye to her yet.” With Hartung out, tonight was an opportunity for others to step up. Junior Courtney Gladys turned in her first collegiate all-around performance Friday, tying for fourth at 39.225. It was her first competitive all-around performance since age 14. A Gator who has been a part of the Florida floor lineup all season, freshman Amy Ferguson, has turned in the top two marks of her collegiate career in the last two meets. She received a 9.85 Friday, just off the 9.875 she earned last Saturday at Georgia. Sophomore Alicia Goodwin anchored the Gator beam lineup with a collegiate-best 9.875, giving her the first beam win of her Florida career. She also shared second on the uneven bars at 9.85 with Castillo and UF junior Maranda Smith. “We are so proud. With all of the challenges, they are stepping up. The way that Amy is competing is so great to see. Courtney as an all-arounder – she’s fighting for every tenth. Alicia is a sophomore, but she didn’t have a whole lot of competitive experience last year. To come out tonight and have what I thought was a phenomenal bar routine and then to step into the beam lineup for Corey with such confidence - I was so proud of her.”

Meet 10 No. 5 Florida at No. 2 Utah March 13, 2009 Jon M. Huntsman Center/Salt Lake City, Utah The No. 5 Florida gymnastics team (6-4, 3-3 SEC) finished its 2009 regular-season schedule with a 197.075-196.00 loss at No. 2 Utah (11-1) Friday evening in front of a Jon M. Huntsman Center crowd of 15,082. Although it was a loss, UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn was pleased with the fight the Gators showed Friday. “It was amazing tonight. I was so proud of the team by how they competed and performed,” Faehn said. “Despite everything that was thrown at us, they just kept fighting. We started off on bars where we did a great job, but it seemed the scores were not indicative of how they performed. Amanda (Castillo), Maranda (Smith) and Melanie (Sinclair) did a great job. But the team didn’t let that affect them, continuing to fight through on vault and on floor. Amanda just stung her ankle during her floor routine and wasn’t able to go on beam tonight. We were going to go with five on beam, but Ashley Kerr said ‘Put me in.’ That was wonderful to see – the few bodies that we have left are willing to do whatever it takes to help the team. We went six-for-six on beam to finish out strong.” It was the Utes’ Senior Night and their pair of senior All-Americans led the team. Kristina Baskett won the all-around (39.675), uneven bars (9.975) and floor exercise (9.925). Nina Kim claimed the balance beam title at 9.95 and was runner-up in the all-around at 39.60. Annie DiLuzio claimed the evening’s vault title at 9.95. In the first rotation, Florida was led on the uneven bars by Melanie Sinclair’s 9.825, which placed third overall. On the next event, junior Courtney Gladys stuck her vault landing to earn a mark of 9.925. She took second overall Friday and the mark also sets her collegiate-best for the event. Florida’s final two floor competitors, Sinclair and Maranda Smith, turned in marks of 9.875 and 9.90, respectively, to lead UF on the event. Smith shared second on floor with Utah’s Nina Kim. During her floor routine Friday, Castillo aggravated her left ankle. The bursitis in her left ankle has kept her out of the all-around lineup for most of the 2009 season. She will be examined by team doctors when she returns to Gainesville this weekend. The team, already short-handed due to injuries, took Castillo out of the lineup for the team’s final event, the balance beam. Only five Gators at the meet had experience as part of a Florida beam lineup during their collegiate careers, but junior Ashley Kerr approached the UF coaches and said she was ready. All six Gators hit their beam routines Friday and sophomore Alicia Goodwin led UF for the second consecutive meet on the event, matching her collegiate-best mark of 9.875 to share third overall with Utah’s Baskett. Senior All-American Corey Hartung did not compete again Friday evening due to the third-degree strain of her soleus muscle in her left calf. The team hopes to have her back on perhaps two events for next week’s Southeastern Conference Championships. “We know we are going to get Corey (Hartung) back and we need to have Amanda rest a little bit. We are going to be ok,” Faehn said. “But for what they experienced tonight and to battle through, I thought they did a great job.” 2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin watched Friday’s meet from her courtside seat. Also in attendance Friday was University of Florida president Dr. Bernie Machen, who was able to catch the contest between his present and prior schools while he was in town.

Gator Gymnastics Meet Notes

Meet 11 No. 5 Florida at Southeastern Conference Championships March 21, 2009 Sommet Center/Nashville, Tenn. The No. 6 Florida gymnastics team (10-6, 3-3 SEC) finished third at the 29th edition of the Southeastern Conference Championships, held in front of a Sommet Center crowd of 5,045. Alabama stunned previously undefeated No. 1 Georgia to claim its sixth SEC title and first since 2003. Alabama won the meet title at 197.30. Georgia couldn’t overcome the falls on balance beam by its first two performers Saturday and finished with a total of 196.925. Florida turned its highest road score of the season, 196.75, to claim its fourth consecutive top three SEC finish. Other team results Saturday included LSU (196.55), Auburn (196.35), Arkansas (195.65) and Kentucky (195.10). Florida’s finish Saturday was perhaps surprising to all but the members of the team. The 2009 Gators have been hit hard by injuries, as five of the team’s 12 members were sidelined for SECs. Just in the last week, Florida lost the services of junior All-American Amanda Castillo, the two-time defending SEC floor exercise champion, with a partial tear of her left Achilles tendon and of sophomore Alicia Goodwin, who sprained her left knee in Wednesday’s practice. “It was absolutely phenomenal. I told the team that as a coaching staff this is the proudest we’ve ever been of any team we’ve ever coached. They just put everything out there. They showed so much heart and so much fight. After so many injuries, everyone was counting us out and had no expectations,” UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn said. “But the team competed with such passion – it was just awesome.” “We are short some athletes on some of the events, but everyone supported each other. I don’t even have the words to describe how happy I am for the fight and desire this team showed,” she continued. “Those injuries would have devastated any other team but not this team. They are not giving up.” Senior All-American Corey Hartung, who was held out for the last two meets and was limited to just bars and beam at the Feb. 28 dual at Georgia due to a third-degree strain of her left soleus muscle, led UF with her season-best all-around total of 39.50. She finished fourth in the all-around competition and teammate junior All-American Melanie Sinclair was fifth at 39.45. “I am so happy for Corey. Her performance tonight just showed her passion and her fight,” Faehn said. “She willed herself to do as well as she did despite the limited training she had.” Florida drew the Olympic rotation for the meet and opened competition on the vault. The Gators were solid on the event, posting a 49.20 team total. Hartung, performing her first vault since the Feb. 20 dual versus Alabama, led UF on the event with a season-best mark of 9.90, which tied for third overall. Florida also received vault marks of 9.85 from Sinclair and junior Maranda Smith. The Gators’ uneven bars lineup consisted of only five gymnasts, so clean routines were vital. Each of the Gators hit their routines and the final three performers all turned in marks of 9.90 or better. Sinclair and Hartung each posted marks of 9.95 to share second overall. Smith tied for sixth with her mark of 9.90. The score is a collegiate-best for Hartung, who twice turned in a 9.925 as a sophomore. UF turned in a 49.375 on the event – its highest bars total in seven meets. Cautious, but solid, performances on the balance beam resulted in a 48.825 team score on the event. Sinclair and junior Courtney Gladys led UF with marks of 9.80 to tie for seventh overall while freshman Elizabeth Mahlich earned a 9.775. Florida finished the meet with its second-highest floor exercise total of the season (49.35). Four Gators turned in floor marks of 9.85 or higher. Hartung led UF on the event with her fourth-place mark of 9.925, while Smith shared sixth at 9.90. Sinclair and freshman Amy Ferguson both turned in marks of 9.85. Georgia senior Courtney Kupets, the 2009 SEC Gymnast of the Year, won the all-around at 39.775. She also earned at least a share of each of the event titles. Kupets collected the uneven bars (9.975) title. She shared the vault title with Alabama’s Morgan Dennis at 9.95 and also shared the beam win at 9.90 with LSU’s Susan Jackson and Arkansas’ Casey Jo Magee. Dennis and LSU’s Ashleigh Clare-Kearney shared the floor title with her at 9.95.

Meet 12 No. 6 Florida at NCAA North Central Region

Championships April 4, 2009 Carver-Hawkeye Arena/Iowa City, Iowa The No. 6 Florida gymnastics team used a score of 196.775 to win the NCAA North Central Region Championships Saturday evening in front of a Carver-Hawkeye Arena crowd of 1,740. The win gives Florida its fifth consecutive region title. The win advances Florida to the NCAA Championships, set for April 16-18 in Lincoln, Neb. It will be Florida’s 27th NCAA Championship appearance in the meet’s 28-year history. No. 7 UCLA took the other advancing position at 196.625. Other team results Saturday included No. 23 Iowa State (195.65), No. 20 Denver (195.60), No. 18 Minnesota (193.775), and No. 28 Iowa (193.625). The Gators placed four among the meet’s top six all-arounders, with senior All-American Corey Hartung taking second with a season-best total of 39.525. Junior Maranda Smith was fourth at 39.325, followed by freshman Elizabeth Mahlich (5th/39.20) and junior All-American Melanie Sinclair (6th/39.175). Denver’s Jessica Lopez claimed the all-around title at 39.60. “The entire coaching staff is so proud of the athletes for once again showing their passion and their fight. They just fought for every little thing. This is a really tough competition because there is so much pressure to do well so that the team can advance to the NCAA Championships,” UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn said. “They started out a little bit rough on floor and were forced to count a small mistake. But they didn’t let that affect them and that was the true test. They did awesome on every other event and finished incredibly strong on beam. That is the best we’ve done all year on that event and that’s when the most pressure was on. That just shows how tough they really are and how much heart they are putting into this season. “We’re excited,” she continued. “On to Nebraska!” Florida’s opening event total of 49.075 on floor was held back by some low landings. Hartung led the Gators on the event with a 9.925 to share the meet’s floor title with Denver’s Lopez. The win was Hartung’s second regional floor title and the first since her freshman year. Junior Maranda Smith added a 9.90 to share third. Freshman Amy Ferguson posted a 9.85 – just off her collegiate-best of 9.875. Vault was steady for the Gators, as UF used marks of 9.80 or above toward its team total of 49.225 – just a fraction away from its season-best of 49.275. Smith led UF on the event with her second 9.90 of the meet to share third overall. Sinclair posted a 9.875 and junior Courtney Gladys added a 9.85. Three Gators – Smith, Sinclair and Hartung- led UF on the uneven bars with marks of 9.85. They finished in a five-way tie for second overall. Florida turned in a total of 49.15 on the event. Heading into the final event, the Gators knew they needed a 49.20 to pass UCLA for the meet title. Florida also held a lead of just .80 over third-place Iowa State, a margin that could easily dissolve if the Gators had problems on the event. “If they felt any pressure, they sure didn’t show it,” Faehn said. “They were very relaxed, they were having fun and they were very confident.” That confidence was reflected in their performance, as Florida went six-for-six on the event to post a season-best and the meet’s high beam total of 49.325. Hartung turned in a stellar routine that was punctuated by a stuck two and a half twist dismount. She won the event title after matching her career-best beam mark of 9.95 for the second time this season. It was also the second regional beam win of her career. Sophomore Alicia Goodwin returned to the UF lineup Saturday after missing the Southeastern Conference Championships due to a knee sprain suffered the week of the event. She equaled her collegiate-best of 9.875 for the third consecutive outing to tie for second overall. Gladys and Sinclair shared fourth at 9.85. “Corey’s routine was just so wonderful to see. We were all shouting ’10’ when she was done because it was such a great routine. She just put together an absolutely perfect beam routine, right down to the landing,” Faehn said. “Alicia came back from an injury that we weren’t even sure would allow her to compete for the rest of the season. She nailed both of her routines tonight and did a phenomenal job. That was really wonderful to see.” In addition to the all-around, Denver’s Lopez won the vault at 9.95. UCLA’s Anna Li claimed the uneven bars title at 9.90.
