The Fact is, Fire Kills…

• In 2006*– Fire killed more Americans than all natural disasters combined.

• 3,245 civilians casualties• 16,400 civilian injuries• 106 firefighters killed while on duty.

– Property loss due to fires was estimated at $11.3 billion.– Over 90% of all fires are extinguished and never reported.

• Because fire extinguishers are proven and reliable, National, State and Local fire codes require fire extinguishers in commercial structures. However…Fire extinguishers are only effective if they are accessible and working.

Post 9/11 World• Terrorists are stealing ,converting and using fire

extinguishers as IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices)

• 50+ incidents in the past 3 years resulting in numerous killed & injured.

• Technology listed with the US Department of Homeland Security

• Technology addresses a clear loop hole in the Transportation Security Administration’s airport security program.

“There are several fire extinguishers somewhere in this courtyard. If one of those fire extinguishers was filled with sarin gas, …… discharged in the New York City subway, the death toll would exceed the death toll of 9/11 in a matter of 30 to 60 seconds.” Congressman Rob Andrews (D-NJ)

The Need

• Codes mandate fire extinguisher inspections every 30-days, a costly & laborious task. Owners are liable if fire extinguishers have not been inspected & documented. (Station Nightclub / Seton Hall)

• Every aspect of a building’s fire & security program is electronically monitored, except the only component that requires human interaction, the fire extinguisher.

• Real time data in facilities management is no longer a “nice to have”, but a “must have”.

• Tampering & vandalism is no longer just a costly nuisance it’s become a Homeland Security concern.

The Technology

> Upgraded Pressure Gauge

> Obstruction Sensor> Data Comm. Unit

Data System Alarm System

• Signals the moment an extinguisher is removed, out of pressure or continually blocked.– Immediate notification– Ensures national code compliance– Provides 24/7 surveillance– Improves inventory control– Reduces threat of business

interruption– Reduces the threat of tampering

and vandalism

• Tie alarm system and fire extinguishers together with leading wireless sensor backbone.

• Track through building alarm system, building management system or software

AUSTIN, Texas May 2007 It was a fire extinguisher that alerted Austin-Bergstrom airport authorities to a car fire in a remote airport parking garage and enabled authorities to respond quickly to the emergency. …. When the car owner removed the extinguisher and the extinguisher removal alarm sounded, "our dispatcher was able to spin the camera over, see the fire and notify the fire department immediately," Slack explained

The airport now plans to go forward with the installation of 650 monitored extinguishers over the next two years
