Preparing for the Flu How you can help us keep our school healthy:

Families, students, and school staff must take personal responsibility for helping to slow the spread of both seasonal flu and the H1N1 (swine flu) viruses and can keep from getting sick with the flu in three ways:

Practice good hand hygiene. Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing and BEFORE eating. Practice respiratory etiquette. The main way that the flu spreads is from person to person in the droplets produced by coughs and

sneezes, so it’s important to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or tuck them into your elbow or shoulder – not your hands – when you cough or sneeze.

Stay home when you are sick.

Key Points to Remember: Whether you are tested and actually diagnosed with novel H1N1 is less important than what you do if you become sick; be pre-

pared to stay home while you are ill. A person with influenza like illness should be excluded from school, work, and related activities and should NOT go into the community, except to seek medical care, until symptom-free (no fever without control medications) for at least 24 hours.

The school has spent the summer planning for an extended flu season due to both seasonal flu and H1N1 flu. We have partnered with the Steuben County Health Department in preparing for, monitoring, and reporting flu like symptoms on a daily basis.

When vaccinations become available, school immunization clinics will be conducted this fall for both seasonal flu and H1N1 flu. The Steuben County Public Health and Nursing Services will need both non-medical and medical volunteers. A letter seeking volunteers has been sent home with children and should be returned to your child’s teacher by September 18th.

Students still need to learn and achieve with continuity for a successful school year. Principals will be working with teachers to prepare for instructional telephone calls; take-home course packets; internet-based lessons-listservs; conference calls; audio recordings; live webcams, podcasts, and webinars.

Handwashing – the Best Prevention

Wash your hands with soap and water often – AFTER playing with pets; using the

bathroom; sneezing, blowing your nose, and coughing; touching a cut or open sore,

playing outside, and BEFORE eating.

1. Wet your hands with warm water and apply soap.

2. Rub your hands together for 20 seconds – don’t forget between your fingers and

your entire hand up to your wrist.

3. Don’t forget your fingernails. Use a nail brush if you have one.

4. Rinse thoroughly.

5. Dry your hands.

Helpful hints: In a public restroom, before discarding the paper towel you use to dry

your hands, use it to turn off the water and open the door. Don’t forget to use cart

wipes when grocery shopping and use a hand sanitizer if unable to wash your hands

after using the grocery cart.

The Scrub Club is a fun, interactive and educational website that teaches children the

proper way to wash their hands. Here is the web site address:
