Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan men’s soccer. I am confident that Coach Dennis Laskey, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the soccer tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful cam-pus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams have won statewide and regional titles and won our first Pennsylvania State Athletic Confer-ence’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy for 2008-09. The Dixon Trophy is emblematic of athletic supremacy in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference—the PSAC, the premier Divi-sion II athletic conference in America today. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many indi-

viduals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2008-09 academic year, a total of 167 California University of Pennsylvania student athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2009 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the sixth-straight semester, the Cal U athletic pro-grams compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regard-less of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the edu-cation occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college educa-tion takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Roadman Park and Booster Field. Men’s soccer and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far re-moved from their sport, but they have carried with them the im-portant life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2009 season and that you will sup-port all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes posted a banner year in athletic competition during the 2008-09 season, six PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and four NCAA regional trophies with eight team and 15 individual ap-pearances in NCAA post-season play. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 167 Cal U student athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Spring 2009 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the sixth-straight semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. During the Spring 2009 semester, Vul-can student-athletes compiled a 3.11 GPA the highest aver-age since the Spring 2007 semester. Cal U also featured nine ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selections, highlighted by the school’s first Academ-ic All-American since 2006. To be eligible for the academic all-district honor, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached sophmore athletic and academ-ic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games as a starter or an important reserve with legitimate athletic creden-tials. In the spring, women’s cross country posted the highest team GPA at 3.71 and featured all nine runners on the Honor Roll. On the men’s side, the cross country team posted top GPA of the seven sports at 3.40 with seven runners holding a 3.00 GPA or better. In terms of pure numbers during the spring, football led all 16 sports with 27 representatives on the Honor Roll, followed by women’s soccer (21) and women’s track & field (19). Women’s cross country led all programs with 100 percent of its team (nine-of-nine) on the Honor Roll. Cal U also boasted 37 student-athletes that registered a perfect 4.0 GPA during one or both of the semesters.

Seth Menart, a sophomore on last year’s men’s soccer team, lost his life in a car accident on May 17 in his hometown of Mt. Pleasant, Pa. Menart, 20, was pursuing a degree in electrical engineering technology at Cal U.

Last year, he played in 17 games with six starts for the Vulcans and helped Cal U win its first PSAC Tournament Championship in program history. He made his first career start in the second game of the season against Shippensburg. Menart collected his first career point on an assist in a dominating 7-0 win over Charleston (W.Va.).

Prior to Cal U, Menart graduated from Mount Pleasant High School where he was a member of the Honor Roll and a four-year starter on the soccer team for the Vikings. He was a three-time all-section player and earned honors from the WPIAL following his senior season.

Laskey, who finished his degree at Cal U after his tour of duty, entered the coaching ranks as head coach at Charleroi High School from 1978-83. He also served as the co-founder and first president of the Mon Valley Youth Soccer Association. He moved to the collegiate game in 1983 working with the Vulcan men’s soccer team on the club level before the program moved to the NCAA level in 1984. He coached Cal U for five seasons, winning three-straight West Penn Intercollegiate Soccer conference titles (1986-88) that included NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA teams. In 1989, he moved back to the scholastic level coaching Upper St. Clair High School to a pair of WPIAL titles before returning back to Cal U to start the women’s soccer program. Laskey, who holds a master’s degree in Sport Management and a post-baccalaureate degree in athletic administration from Cal U, resides in Charleroi, Pa., with his wife Jeanne and the couple has three children, Deni Lynn, Deiter and Marissa.

The longest tenured California University of Pennsylvania head coach, Dennis Laskey enters his 24th season (19th consecutive) at the helm of the men’s soccer program in 2009. He ranks 19th nationally among active head coach in NCAA Division II in career victories. Laskey has been with the Vulcans for almost the entire 26 years of the program, dating

back to the inaugural season of 1984. During his time at Cal U, he holds a 212-201-33 overall record (.512) with five appearances in the PSAC Championship Game and two berths in the NCAA Tournament. Behind an improbable late-season surge last season, Cal U won the PSAC West title and claimed the program’s first-ever PSAC Tournament Championship. The Vulcans also garnered a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. In addition to his 24 years with the men’s program, Laskey was also instrumental in the creation of the women’s soccer program at Cal U. He served as the first head coach for the women’s program in 1990 and coached both the men’s and women’s soccer teams from 1991-2001. A native of nearby Dunlevy, Pa., he has coached five players that were inducted into the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame. Nicholas Addlery, who plays professionally, and Audrey Dawson were both inducted last year as part of the 14th annual Hall of Fame Class.Additionally, Laskey has been playing in the Pennsylvania West Soccer League for more than four decades and continues to compete against master’s level competition. He was also a 2007 inductee for the Mid-Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame. Laskey was a four-year starting defender at Alderson-Broaddus College and earned honorable mention from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). Following his time at A-B, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1972 and continued his playing career throughout Europe for the U.S. Navy Phiblant team stationed in the Mediterranean.

Following his four-year playing career, Brian Braithwaite enters his first season with the Vulcans as a graduate assistant in 2009. Braithwaite was a three-year starter at California University of Pennsylvania and played in 80 career games with 67 starts. In his career, he totaled seven goals and six assists for 20 points. As a freshman in 2005, he scored four goals as Cal U won its third Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) regular-season title in five years. Last year, Braithwaite started all 23 games for the Vulcans and helped lead the program to its first-ever PSAC Tournament Championship and its second NCAA Tournament appearance. A native of Pittsburgh, Braithwaite was a four-year letterman in soccer at Chartiers Valley High School and earned all-section and All-WPIAL honors.

Braithwaite earned his undergraduate degree in Sport Management and was a PSAC Scholar-Athlete and member of the Cal U AD Honor Roll during his collegiate playing career.

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to

provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
