JOINING A FAMILYTCU is an established and prestigious university that takes a deep pride in its athletic programs. When a student-athlete hits the field, court, track, pool or course, they represent the high standards and expectations that comes with wearing the Purple and White. This season’s mission statement of “A WINNER believes in themself. A CHAMPION believes in their teammates” captures the passion and excitement that surrounds TCU Athletics.

Each member of the Horned Frog swimming and diving team can be seen wearing black and purple shirts donning its season mission statement – whether they are in the weight room, classroom, or just walking across campus.

“Our goal is to win. We want to be in the top three in every event,” Sybesma said, explaining the strength of their message. “Within the university, we want our athletes to show us the passion that we expect through the focus and ability that they possess. We have a special group of kids that are hard working, they excel in the classroom and they really exemplify what a student-athlete should be.”

Tradition runs deep at TCU, and it all begins with the Horned Frog. Some say the frog was chosen as the

school’s mascot because the football practice field was overrun with the small, spiny lizards. Others say

its feisty attitude simply matched the tough frontier spirit shown by TCU itself. Other school traditions

include TCU’s school colors, purple and white. The former represents royalty, the latter a clean game.

Learning how to do the Horned Frog hand sign is a must (Make a peace sign. Now fold those two

fingers.). And new students may not have any idea what Riff, Ram, Bah Zoo means now, but they’ll soon

discover that it’s one of the oldest cheers in the country. We also blow the 120-decibel Frog Horn—a real

live train horn—after every football score.

WHAT THE HECK IS A HORNED FROG?1. The scientific name for this Texas reptile is

phrynosoma cornutum; in Greek, phrynos means “a toad” and soma means “body”; in Latin, cornutus

means “horned.”

2. Their primary diet is red harvester ants; they eat 80 to 100 a day.

3. The typical horned frog is three to five inches long.

4. Horned frogs are cold-blooded and have an unusual pineal gland, resembling a “third eye” on the top of the head, which zoologists believe is part of their system of

thermoregulation.

5. When angered or frightened, horned frogs can squirt a fine, four-foot stream of blood from their eyes.

6. The horned frog was named the State Reptile of Texas in 1992.

H EAD O F TH E C LASSBefore practice, the training room and dual meets, there are the books. Up early and up late, TCU student-athletes strive for excellence in

the classroom, just as they do on the playing field. In the Spring of 2009, Horned Frog student-athletes notched a departmental cumulative

grade point average of 2.957, which is the highest since tracking began in the Fall of 1998. The TCU men’s and women’s swimming and diving

teams both earned Academic All-America honors for the 2009 spring semester from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America

(CSCAA), marking the 34th time the women have claimed the honor, while the men have now met the criteria 12 times.

ABOUT ACADEMIC SERVICESThe Athletic Academic Services Office (AASO), located in the Davis Academic Learning Center and the new Abe Martin Academic Enhancement Center, offers exceptional academic

support services for all Horned Frog student-athletes.

The AASO is client-centered in its objectives and goals as it provides an environment conducive to academic achievement and personal development. Life Skills programming ensures that student-athletes receive a well-rounded academic experience

and are prepared for the challenges after TCU.

In addition to five full-time staff members, the AASO also utilizes the help of two graduate assistants and five undergrad student workers in addition to a pool of 50-plus tutors who provide at

least 200 weekly sessions.

ABE MARTIN ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTERThe newest addition to TCU’s academic support services is the Abe Martin Academic Enhancement Center, part of the Dutch Meyer Athletic Complex attached to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The new facility features seven individual tutor rooms and a spacious computer lab (above right) with 32 deskop machines, in addition to a 120-seat educational learning center featuring the latest technology and teaching tools. The Abe Martin Academic Enhancement Center pairs with the Davis Academic Learning Center (below), located in the Justin Center, to give TCU one of the finest sets of academic facilities in the nation. Included among a five-person TCU Academic Services staff is assistant director Judy Golden (above left), who helps assist Frog swimmers and divers in their academic pursuits.

list, pacing all TCU sports.

Student-athletes must have completed at

least two academic terms at the member

institution while maintaining a cumulative

grade point average of 3.5 or higher and

have participated in varsity competition

in an NCAA-sponsored sport in order to

be eligible for Mountain West Conference

Scholar-Athlete Award - which is the highest

academic honor by the conference.

FIRST-CLASS FACILITIESThe University Recreation Center, home of the Horned Frog swimming and diving teams, opened its remodeled doors in January 2003.

Improvements to the aquatic facilities included new offices, which overlook the pool for the TCU swimming and diving staff. The 25-yard pool is

equipped with an advanced Daktronics Electronic timing system and scoreboard. There is also a diving well, that is 22 feet deep, that has a pair

of one- and three-meter springboards, a five-meter platform and an outdoor dry board. During competitions, the Rec Center seats up to 500

spectators in its elevated gallery. The Frogs also takes advantage of the 15-meter sprint tank, as well as the 50-meter outdoor pool at Forest Park.

SPRINT TANKTCU’s 15-meter sprint tank helps give the

Horned Frog swim team a competitive

advantage. Here are several activities and

amenities that the Sprint Tank provides:

• Power racks – increases speed and

power

• Starting blocks – provides extra space

to work uninterrupted on starts and relay

exchanges

• Stretch cords –simulates race pace and

provides resistance training

• Vertical kicking – helps build leg strength

• Breath control kicking – simulates a

sprint race

• Underwater work – uses cameras to de-

velop better underwater techniques.

FOREST PARK POOL TCU enjoys the luxury of having a 2,800-square-foot outdoor pool down the street from campus grounds. The eight-lane, 50-meter pool (above) offers the Frogs a chance to train outside and take advantage of the Texas heat that

extends into the fall semester.

JOHN JUSTIN ATHLETIC CENTERConstruction of the 38,000-square-foot John Justin Athletic Center (left) was completed in August 2000. The facility, located outside the south end zone of Amon G. Carter Stadium, houses the TCU football offices, athletics administration offices, Athletic Academic Services Office, video labs and the Encke Heritage Center. The Justin Center is named after longtime TCU

trustee John Justin, former CEO of Justin Industries.

Located on the Justin Center’s second floor outside the entry to the football offices is TCU’s vast collection of trophies and other historic athletics memorabilia. Included among the collection are two national championship trophies for football, Davey O’Brien’s 1938 Heisman Trophy and LaDainian

Tomlinson’s 2000 Doak Walker Award.

WALSH COMPLEXTCU’s spacious Walsh Complex provides Horned Frog student-athletes with a state-of-the-art facility for athletic training and rehabilitation, as well as weight training and conditioning. TCU’s sports medicine area received a facelift prior to the 2008 season in the form of a renovated rehab area featuring all-new equipment.

The Walsh Complex is home to the state-of-the-art headquarters for TCU’s strength and conditioning program. The weight room itself, a 9,000 square-foot complex, recently received a $100,000 renovation in the summer of 2006.

Included among the new features of the upgraded Walsh Complex Weight Room are: - nine double-sided power racks with platforms - three new sets of dumbbells, from 5 lbs. to 125 lbs. - 1,000 square feet of state-of-the-art weight room flooring.

TCU head strength coach Don Sommer, associate strength coach Matt Parker and assistants Zach Dechant, Stephen Gephardt and Todd Kensler man the Frog strength and conditioning program.

DANIEL-MEYER COLISEUMHome of the TCU men’s and women’s

basketball teams, Daniel-Meyer Coliseum

is located on the southeast corner of Amon

G. Carter Stadium. The 7,201-seat arena

of the “DMC” was constructed in 1961 and

has seen several upgrades in recent years.

In addition to receiving updated men’s and

women’s locker rooms in 2002, a new sports

medicine facility was added in 2006. The

arena floor was replaced in 2003, and a new

LED suspended scoreboard and LED boards

along the scorers’ tables were added in 2007

at a cost of nearly $1.5 million.

TCU has taken full advantage of its home-court

atmosphere since the DMC’s construction.

The men have won 63 percent of their home

games since 1961, while the Lady Frogs

have posted an 81.8 percent home winning

percentage over the last

10 seasons.

ATHLETICS FACILITIESTCU takes pride in its ablility to provide student-athletes with some of the finest facilities possible. Horned Frog athletes have seen multiple facility

upgrades in recent years, and not just for football. The Schollmaier Basketball Complex, completed in 2004, gave both the men’s and women’s

basketball programs a brand-new practice facility, while the baseball team benefited from the construction of the $7-million Lupton Stadium in

2003. The tennis, track and field, soccer, volleyball and swimming and diving programs also have seen individual sport improvements since 2000,

and a multi-million-dollar Olympic Sports Complex is one of many projects in the works for the future of TCU’s athletics program.

AMON G. CARTER STADIUMThe Horned Frogs’ official home since its

construction in 1930, Amon G. Carter

Stadium features grandstands on both

sidelines, including a massive double-deck

west stand that towers above the TCU

campus. The Frogs have used the home-

field atmosphere of the charming facility

to their advantage by winning 50 of 56

games (89.3 percent) at

home since 1999.

The playing surface was changed from a

synthetic turf to natural grass in 1992,

and a new state-of-the-art scoring and

video system was added in 2002. Amon

G. Carter Stadium received a major facelift

in 2008, as the Dutch Meyer Athletic

Complex and Abe Martin Academic

Enhancement Center added six luxury

suites and 255 club seats to the south

end zone. A complete renovation of Amon

Carter also has recently been proposed.

BROWN-LUPTON UNIVERSITY UNIONBetter known as the BLUU, construction of the 145,000 square

foot student union was completed in the fall of 2008, giving TCU

students a more spacious and functional facility that serves as the

beating heart of the campus.

A new dining facility, auditorium, conference rooms, gift shop and

student organization headquarters are some of the many services

that the new union offers to TCU students, faculty and staff.

The BLUU features three separate dining options, including

Market Square, an 800-seat hall where TCU students can

watch their food being grilled, seared, tossed or baked to order.

Market Square boasts seven different varieties of cuisine from

which students can select on all-you-can-eat terms.

W HAT’S N E W AT TC UIn recent years, Texas Christian University has invested more than $500 million in new facilities and upgrades to campus classrooms,

laboratories and residence halls. The individual projects have radically changed the face of the TCU campus, and further advances continue

each day. Individual projects recently completed include the construction of the new Brown-Lupton University Union, TCU Barnes and Noble

Bookstore and Mabee Foundation Education Complex, in addition to four new student residence halls. In all, nine new facilities have been added

to the campus landscape over the last two years alone.

TCU BARNES & NOBLE BOOKSTOREThe new 34,000-square-foot facility was a joint venture with Barnes & Noble, which operates as the university’s bookstore. Students can now study and meet classmates in the Starbucks lounge or purchase TCU gear across the street from campus. The bookstore is located on the corner of University Drive and W. Berry Street.

The new bookstore includes expanded book sales and retail space, a lounge, reading areas, a mezzanine for textbooks, study areas and a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating.

J.E. AND L.E. MABEE FOUNDATION EDUCATION COMPLEX

Renovation of the interior of the existing Bailey Building and construction of an adjoining three-story, 23,000 square-foot addition, named Betsy and Steve Palko Hall, was completed in summer 2007.

The Bailey Building, constructed in 1914, was originally the home of Brite College of the Bible. It was named for West Texas pioneers Mary Ann and Robert Bailey.

RESIDENCE HALLSFour new residence halls, totaling approximately 220,000 square feet, have been added to the grounds of TCU’s campus.

The TCU student housing administrative offices are located on the ground floor of Kellye Wright Samuelson Hall. Samuelson and Amon G. Carter Hall, the two northern-most buildings, were completed in summer 2007. Teresa and Luther King Hall and Mary and Robert J. Wright Hall, TCU’s most recent additions, were completed in 2008.

Fort Worth continues to wear its cowboy heritage and exude a prop-your-feet-up-and-stay-awhile spirit. Smiles and nods are the norm. Optimism,

like a friendly handshake, is undeniable. Yet as much as Fort Worth began on the open range, it thrives more today as a cosmopolitan city. It

marries a proud cowboy heritage with a distinct sophistication that sets the city apart. Downtown itself is only five miles from campus. Sundance

Square invites patrons to enjoy the 20-block entertainment and shopping venue. Where else can you take your pick of more than 25 upscale

eateries, see a movie, attend a play, listen to a symphony or dance under the stars – all within walking distance of each other? Fort Worth

connects with nearby Dallas and other surrounding communities for what is simply known as the “Metroplex,” which boasts a total population

of more than 6.1 million to form the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the United States.

As Chancellor of Texas Christian University since 2003, Dr. Victor J. Boschini, Jr., has had the privilege of leading the university through an extraordinary period. With four residence halls, the Brown-Lupton University Union, and soon-to be-completed Scharbauer Hall, an academic facility, the Commons is becoming the center of a vibrant social, cultural and intellectual life for students, faculty and staff. The Campus Commons concept grew from Vision in Action, a major strategic planning effort Dr. Boschini launched soon after becoming TCU’s 10th chancellor. Among the results of Vision in Action are 10 new living/learning facilities opened in recent years; significant increases in scholarships and financial aid funds; the addition of a substantial number of faculty and instructional positions, resulting in a low 15:1 student/faculty ratio; several endowed chairs and professorships; and the creation of the John V. Roach Honors College. Underwriting these achievements is The Campaign for TCU, which has raised more than $203 million, 81 percent of its $250 million goal.

Chancellor Boschini maintains a high profile in the world of higher education. Last year, as chair of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Independent Colleges & Universities (NAICU), he advocated for 1,000 independent colleges and universities across the nation. As past chair, he continues his work for NAICU, which is often described as “the voice of private higher education.” Chancellor Boschini is also past chair of the Mountain West Conference’s Executive Board and is a member of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (ICUT).

In spite of these responsibilities, the Chancellor teaches an honors course, A New Paradigm for Leadership, in the College of Education. It’s a natural fit since he not only holds the rank of professor of education, but also brings an extensive background in higher education administration to the classroom.

Since TCU is Fort Worth’s “home team,” the Chancellor takes an active role in as many community ventures as possible. He serves on the board of directors of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and the Van Cliburn Foundation.

Chancellor Boschini and his wife Megan have given TCU two Horned Frogs: Elizabeth, a 2009 graduate, and Mary, a sophomore. Future Frogs Edward and Margaret attend All Saints Episcopal School.

ABOUT THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCEFrom its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Fresh off celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2008-09, the MWC continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Over the history of its first decade, the MWC has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics.

Progressive in its approach, the MWC has marked several achievements over its first decade of existence, most notably becoming the first to establish a sports network dedicated solely to an intercollegiate athletic conference. The MWC was the first to experiment with the coaches challenge in the college football instant replay system. It was also the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS conference to participate in and win two BCS bowl games, as well as have three teams ranked all eight weeks of the BCS Standings. Additionally, the MWC was the first conference to have a member institution with No. 1 overall picks in both the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year (Utah’s Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut, respectively). Since it was founded in 1999, the MWC is the only conference to have the No. 1 selection in each of the NFL, NBA and MLB drafts. The MWC also ranks second in No. 1 draft picks over the last five years with three overall.

The Mountain West Conference is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West Conference boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MWC schools (Utah, BYU, Air Force and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of the MWC’s newest member, TCU.

HISTORY The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference.

The split from the former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Five of the MWC’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (BYU, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MWC in 1999. TCU rejoined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06, completing the Conference membership as it stands today.

When the MWC officially began operations on July 1, 1999, the new league had in place a seven-year contract with ESPN, giving the broadcaster exclusive national television rights to MWC football and men’s basketball, and three-year agreements to send the league’s football champion to the Liberty Bowl and a second team to the Las Vegas Bowl. Commissioner Craig Thompson also arranged a third bowl tie-in each of the first three years (1999 Motor City, 2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans) before securing a four-year deal with the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco in 2002. An innovator in the postseason bowl structure, the MWC engineered many “firsts,” as league teams have participated in five inaugural bowl games (2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans, 2002 San Francisco (Emerald), 2005 Poinsettia, 2006 New Mexico), as well as placing the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS team into a BCS bowl game with Utah’s appearance in the 2005 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

HOW DO I kNOW IF I’M BEING RECRUITED?There are several ways to be recruited: (1) A coach may provide you with an official paid visit to view the campus, (2) a coach may arrange an in-person, off-campus meeting with you (or your family), or (3) a coach or staff member may call you (or your family) on more than one occasion for the purpose of recruitment. Only coaches and athletic department staff can be involved in the recruiting process. Athletic representatives are prohibited from contacting a prospective student-athlete or members of his/her family by telephone, letter or in person for the purpose of encouraging participation in athletics at TCU. Please contact the coaching staff if you know of a prospect that may have the interest and ability to participate in intercollegiate athletics at TCU. The coach can then take appropriate action.

WHAT IS A CONTACT?A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent(s) or legal guardian and an institutional staff member or athletic representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of greeting. NOTE: At the Division I level, athletic representatives (boosters) may not contact you for the purpose of recruiting.

WHAT CAN TCU OFFER YOU TO ATTEND?You (or your family) may not receive any benefit, inducement, or arrangements (e.g. cash, clothing, cars, gifts, loans, etc…) to encourage you to sign a National Letter of Intent. TCU may offer you a one-year scholarship that covers room and board, tuition and fees, and required course-related books, or any part of these. TCU can recommend that this aid is renewed each year, as is the general practice at the institution, but this renewal is not guaranteed.

BOOSTERSWHO IS A “BOOSTER”?A “booster” is known in NCAA terms as a “representative of the institution’s athletics interests.” You become a booster if:

—you have ever been a member of any organization promoting TCU Athletics, —you have ever made any type of donation to the Frog Club, TCU Athletics or any other TCU booster organization, —you have ever assisted in evaluating or recruiting prospective student-athletes, —you have ever assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families, —you have promoted TCU Athletics in any other manner.

Head Coach Richard Sybesma


Richard Sybesma enters his 31st year at the helm of the TCU swimming and diving program. With him he brings the entire history of the team, his winning record, his keen leadership and intuition and half of his life. In 1978, he took the TCU club sport of swimming and turned it into the powerhouse that it is today.

Sybesma has coached in more than 600 dual meets, and his overall career record now stands at 382-262-4 (.593).

Last season, the Frogs rewrote 13 new school records, had 16 All-Mountain West Conference team members and enjoyed one MWC individual champion. The women’s squad finished the campaign with an 8-3-1 overall record and a seventh place finish in the MWC Championship standings, while the men earned a 4-5 record and a fifth place finish in Oklahoma City.

The Frogs’ 16 All-MWC members compiled honors in 23 events, as TCU also ended the season with eight MWC Swimmer/Diver of the Week award winners. Out of the water, both squads earned Academic All-America status for their outstanding achievements in the classroom.

In 2008, Sybesma had 11 student-athletes earn 22 All-Mountain West Conference selections, as the men’s team placed fifth and the women’s team finished sixth at the MWC Championships.

The men put together a successful year setting three new school records and compiling 11 MWC weekly honors. Senior Jonathon Berrettini became the first TCU swimmer to qualify for the NCAA Championships since 1997, recording a time of 56.69 in the 100-meter back, the fifth best time nationally among collegiate swimmers.

The women’s squad was led by youth, as 12 freshman contributed to 77 top-three finishes and five newcomers earned their first collegiate victories. Stephanie Futscher led the squad with seven event wins. Maria Paula Alvarez joined the club in the spring and earned six wins in as many meets.

In 2006-07, he led the Horned Frogs to a 19-7 dual meet record and tallied his 350th career win on Nov. 18, 2006 against San Diego State and Centenary.

Sixteen Frogs were named to the All-Mountain West Conference team in 2007, and Guillermo Ramirez and Cheryl Townsend both claimed MWC Individual Titles. The Frogs also set four new school records and set two NCAA “B” qualifying times.

In TCU’s inaugural year in the Mountain West Conference in 2006, the women’s squad set a school record with 15 victories and also swam to a strong fourth-place showing at the conference championships. Overall, the men and women held a dual meet record of 21-6.

Prior to joining the Mountain West Conference, the Frogs spent four seasons in Conference USA. During that time, TCU collected five conference titles and tallied an overall dual meet record of 78-20.

Head Coach Richard Sybesma

In 2004, Sybesma led the Horned Frogs to a 21-3 dual meet record and the first ever single-school sweep at the C-USA Championships. Craig Chapman earned Swimmer of the Meet honors, after the junior notched three invidual titles and was a member of two winning relay teams. On Feb. 7, Sybesma tallied his 300th career win after the Frogs swept a dual against Centenary.

During his tenure, he has also coached 18 All-Americans, seven National Champions, 17 Olympic trial qualifiers and three Olympians. In addition, all TCU swimming and diving records have been set during his coaching career and during the 1999-2000 campaigns, the men ranked among the top-25 in the nation.

Sybesma has been honored as the Coach of the Year five times in his career. In 2004, he received the honor after leading the Frogs to a conference sweep. In 2002, Sybesma earned the Coach of the Meet honors at the C-USA Men’s Invitational Championship after the men claimed their first of four consecutive conference titles. As a coach in the Southwest Conference, he was named the Coach of the Year on three different occasions (1981, 1989, 1991). On the national level, Sybesma was honored with the Master Coach Award in 1992 that is given by the College Swim Coaches Association.

In addition, he was also the recipient of the C-USA Student Athlete Advisory Committee’s Coaches Award (SAAC) as voted on by student athletes from around the conference. This honor is given to the coach who exemplifies a commitment to creating a positive academic and athletic atmosphere while fostering the student-athlete’s development and welfare.

His resume doesn’t end there. In 1996, Sybesma coached the Nicaraguan Olympic swim team at the Atlanta games. He took Walter Soza and Jason Flint to the NCAA Championships, where in 1997, Flint placed 16th in the 200-yard breaststroke. That same year, Sybesma tallied his 200th dual meet win. In 2001, in memory of former Horned Frog swimmer Matt Walters, he carried the Olympic Torch through the TCU campus. In 2003, Sybesma was invited to coach at the NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming Youth Education Through Sports (YES) in New York.

Sybesma’s swimmers not only excel in the pool, but in the classroom as well. The College Coaches Association has named his women’s team to its Academic All-American swim team for 34 consecutive semesters. The men have also tallied that honor 12 times under his guidance.

In 2009, 26 swimmers and divers were named to the Academic All-MWC Team, which led all other TCU sports. Twelve Frogs were also named MWC Scholar-Athletes for earning a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Sybesma is also extremely involved in the community. He has conducted swim lessons and clinics in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Malaysia, as well as here in Fort Worth. His international connection also extends to Fort Worth’s sister city, Reggio Emilia, Italy, where he coached in 1987. Sybesma has also been a speaker at the NISCA Clinic, TIS--CA and the Southwest Coaches Clinic.

Sybesma graduated from Texas Tech University in 1975 with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While with the Red Raiders, he was a three-year letterman and captain of the swim team. In 1992, he earned his Master of Liberal Arts degree from TCU. Sybesma has two daughters, Courtney (26) and Katy (24), who both graduated from TCU in May 2007. Katy also married Ryan Eliott in May 2007 and they have a son, Hunter (1).

Wayne Chester begins his 13th season as the coach of Horned Frog men’s and women’s diving.

During his tenure at TCU, Chester has coached three conference champions, two NCAA qualifiers, and was named the Mountain West Conference Diving Coach of the Year in 2006.

Last season, R.J Hesselberg and Kyle Callens took the gold and silver medals, resepectively, in the three-meter dive at the 2009 MWC Championships. Callens currently holds the TCU record in the one-meter (341.62), while Hesselberg graduated with four of the top-five all-time scores from the three-meter springboard, including the record at 380.10.

Under Chester’s direction, Kelly McCain qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2005 and 2006, while Hesselberg was an NCAA qualifier in 2007 and earned 2008 MWC Diver of the Year honors. Hesselberg won 12 events and set a new conference record with seven MWC Men’s Diver of the Week selections, including a stretch of six consecutive weeks of winning the award.

Chester claimed the 1978 NCAA Championship on the 1-meter board for the University of Alabama. While in Tuscaloosa, Chester earned All-America status three times, was a Southeastern Conference champion and earned SEC Diver of the Year honors in 1981.

A native of Fort Worth, Chester attended Arlington Heights High School. He posted a perfect record in city and regional meets and closed a standout prep career with a Texas state championship in his senior year.

Chester married the former Loraine Morris on Sept. 15, 2000. The couple owns Glamourpaws, a local pet salon. The Chesters have three children: Casey Morris (37), Courtney (22) and Emily (19).

Starting his fourth season in Fort Worth, Bill Koppelman joined the TCU staff in the fall of 2006 after spending the previous year as head coach of Cyprus High School in Magna, Utah, as well as serving as head coach of the Pirate Swim Club, a USA Swimming Club team.

“Bill has a lot of variety in his training and I really like that,” Sybesma said. “He thinks out of the box and ahead of the box. He is thorough and he’s our right-hand guy when it comes to team organization, while working with the team’s butterfliers and breaststrokers.”

Prior to his stint at Cyprus High School, Koppelman worked as a graduate assistant with the University of Utah swim team, and was a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Wyoming as an undergraduate.

Under Koppelman’s tutelage, the Cyprus High School swimming program showed improvement, as the women placed fifth in the state and the men finished seventh.

The club team also improved significantly, as the size of the team doubled and the number of state qualifiers tripled in Koppelman’s one year.

During his time at Utah, Koppelman worked with 11 U.S. National swimmers, one Canadian National finalist, 17 All-Mountain West Conference swimmers and two NCAA qualifiers.

Koppelman earned a B.S. in mathematics at the University of Wyoming, and a master of mathematics at the University of Utah. Koppelman also attended Keene State College for a semester, where he was named All-New England in the 50-freestyle.

TCU Coaching Staff

After joining the TCU coaching staff in the summer of 2007, Keegan Walkley will begin her third season as a Horned Frog assistant coach this season. Walkley became a member of the Purple and White staff on June 22, 2007, after spending the previous two seasons as assistant coach at the University of New Orleans.

“Keegan knows what she’s doing,” Sybesma said. “She’s been there and done that in terms of a good swimmer. She is learning daily as a coach, but we are also learning a lot from her. She does a really good job in maintaining our equipment and handling our business on the road.”

Walkley swam at the University of Georgia from 1998-2001, helping the Bulldogs to three national titles. Walkley earned All-America status 14 times and claimed the individual NCAA championship in the 200-back (1:53.22) in 1999.

The four-time All-SEC First Team selection qualified for the Olympic Trials in 1996 and was a finalist in the 400-IM and 200-back events in 2000.

As an assistant coach at New Orleans from 2005-07, all swimmers under the tutelage of Walkley achieved lifetime best times in every event during the 2006-07 season. Before her stint at New Orleans, Walkley served as assistant coach with the Stingray Swimming USS Club in Marietta, Ga., where she coached junior national, national and Olympic trial qualifiers.

Walkley earned a B.S. in sports communications from the University of Georgia in 2002.

Matt Emmert is in his first season as a graduate assistant coach for the TCU swimming and diving team after serving as the head coach of the RAM’s Swim Club in Kingston, R.I., from 2002-09, while also managing volunteer assistant coaching duties at the his alma mater, the University of Rhode Island, since 2007.

Emmert also garnered coaching experience as head swim coach at North Kingstown High (2005-07), as well at the Newport County Boys and Girls Club (2006-07).

Among his swimmers, Emmert has coached a member of the National Junior Team, a pair of Olympic Trial qualifiers, Senior National qualifiers and U.S. Open qualifiers, while also teaching seven Junior National qualifiers.

While attending Rhode Island, Emmert lettered from 2001-04, serving as co-captain in the 2003-04 season. He earned the URI Coaches’ Award in 2002 and was named the URI MVP in 2004. Emmert claimed the Rams’ school record in the 200-free.

Emmert is currently pursuing a master’s of liberal arts degree from TCU.

Julie Harrington begins her first year as a graduate assistant for the Horned Frogs after successful assistant coaching stints at Towson University and at the Merchant Marine Academy.

At Towson, Harrington helped lead the Tigers to their first two Women’s CAA Championships in 2008 and 2009, breaking the school record for wins in each season. She also assisted in setting 43 Towson program records and eight CAA Championship meet records. Under her tutelage, 14 total Tigers earned All-CAA acclaim.

During Harrington’s tenure at the Merchant Marine Academy, the Mariners won three straight Skyline Conference titles, broke 31 school records and sent 11 qualifiers to the NCAA Division III Championships, including three All-Americans. She also served as the Assistant Director of Aquatics and was a professional instructor for mandated courses.

A 2000 graduate of Ithaca College, Harrington qualified for the NCAA Championships three times. She set the school record in the 200-fly as a freshman and won the NSYWCAA title in the 400-individual medley as a sophomore. She still sits on the Bombers’ top-five lists in the 200-fly and 400-IM.

Harrington is currently pursuing a master’s degree in educational administration from TCU.

Kim Johnson came to TCU in May 2008 as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator.

Johnson joined the Horned Frogs after working the previous three years at the University of Alabama. She was the assistant director of compliance for two years before being promoted to assistant athletics director.

With the Crimson Tide, Johnson’s myriad of responsibilities included compliance, eligibility and overseeing the CHAMPS/Life Skills program. She was also the department liaison to the Office of Admissions and Housing and Residential Services.

Prior to arriving in Tuscaloosa in May 2005, Johnson worked one year as the assistant director of compliance at Tulane University. Included among her duties were managing the admissions process for 15 sports and overseeing the financial aid requirements for the NCAA.

Johnson is a 2001 graduate of Northwestern University, where she received a degree in communications. Upon her graduation, Johnson was hired by Northwestern as a compliance assistant. She worked three years at her alma mater before heading to Tulane.

Johnson received a Master’s of Science degree in human environmental science with a sport management emphasis from Alabama in December 2007.

Ron ForrestVolunteer Assistant Coach

Ron Forrest joined the TCU coaching staff in July 2008 as a volunteer assistant coach.

Forrest was a member of the Horned Frogs swimming and diving program from 1990-93. After his final season in 1993, Forrest walked away the TCU record holder in the 200-free (1:38.19), 500-free (4:25.86), 1000-free (9:30.19), 1650-free (15:48.29), 200-IM (1:50.79) and the 800-free relay (6:39.89). His 200- and 500- free marks still top the all-time list.

The Ontario, Canada native was also a Canadian Olympic Trials qualifier in 5 events.

After he graduated from TCU with his degree in psychology/general studies, Forrest has been the Fort Worth Area Swim Team (FAST) head coach and program director since August 1996.

As a coach, he has worked with 22 U.S. Junior National Championship qualifiers, 25 U.S. Open qualifiers, 32 U.S. National Championship qualifiers and 2 Olympic Games qualifiers (USA’s Dana Vollmer and Colombian Camilo Becerra).

Judy GoldenAcademic Advisor

Judy Golden joined TCU in May 1997 and worked in the school of business for six years before coming to the athletics department four years ago.

In addition to swimming and diving, the Loveland, Colo., native works with baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s golf and rifle. She holds a Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech in home and family life and a Master of Liberal Arts from TCU. Jaime Handy

Jaime Handy returns for his second season at TCU after successful media relations internships with the University of Florida Gators and Houston Astros.

The Fort Worth, Texas native received his undergraduate degree in mass communications with an emphasis in advertising and public relations from West Texas A&M University in May 2007. Handy will graduate with a master of liberal arts degree from TCU in May 2010.

The Woodway, Texas native earned her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Todd Kensler is in his second year at TCU, joining the Frog athletic department in the summer of 2008.

Kensler served as a graduate assistant strength coach at UAB, where he worked with football, baseball and the softball programs. Previous organizations Kensler has worked with include the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, the Lynchburg Hillcats, minor league affiliate for MLB’s Pittsburgh Pirates, and Binghamton University.

Laura Weisbrod has served as the administrative assistant for the TCU swimming and diving and volleyball programs for the last six years.

2009-10 Women’s Preview

Returning four TCU record holders, the women’s team looks poised to bring home the Mountain West Conference Championship in 2009-10. After taking two years of recruiting and building, the fruits of sweat and hard work should pay off this season with a solid squad.

After leaning on 16 underclassmen a year ago, head coach Richard Sybesma has a more confident and determined group in 2009-10, anchored by 10 juniors and seniors.

“We have years where we have had huge senior classes and we’ve had years with lean senior classes, but I think it is always good to see a lot of returning faces.” Sybesma said. “There is a camaraderie and a trust factor in the fact that the kids have swam well together and their careers are moving in the right way. They are doing the right things in and out of the water.”

FREESTYLEThe Frogs currently have two of the most dynamic swimmers in the program’s history in the current roster in junior Maria Paula Alvarez and sophomore Ashley Bolin. The tandem battled for the team lead in wins a year ago with both ending the season with 17 victories. Smashing a pair of records each, Alvarez was a silver medalist in the 1650-free at the MWC Championships, while Bolin garnered All-MWC recognition in the 200- and 500-free. Both swimmers were also major cogs in TCU’s record-breaking 800-free on the first day of the MWC Championships to garner the bronze medal.

“We are really talented in the freestyle events from the 100- to the mile,” Sybesma said. “Our real strength lies in the 200-, 500- and the 1000-free. The freestyle events will be the core of this team.” Bolin, alongside sophomore Zrinka Korac, freshmen Ali Berry, Sabine Rasch and Parris Schoppa and transfer Mary O’Sullivan, will look to lead the Frogs in the sprint and mid-distance events. Alvarez and fellow All-MWC selections Lindsey Stevens and Kaitlyn Vann will carry the load in the distance events.

“We have several tough girls to beat in the distance events,” Sybesma added.

TCU will also look for solid freestyle support from juniors Meredith Grubb and Kim Jones, as well as freshman Madi Rupp. Grubb led all Frogs in the 100-free (52.64) in 2008 and is returning after being granted a medical redshirt last year.

BUTTERFLYStephanie Futscher, TCU’s record holder in the 200-fly, is returning for her senior year and will lead the Frog’s in the fly events. A two-time all-MWC selection in the 200-fly, Futscher will look to be a leader in and out of the water during her final season in Fort Worth.

“We have Stephanie returning to lead our butterfliers,” Sybesma said. “She’s the TCU record holder in the 200-fly, so it doesn’t get much better than that.

Futscher will be joined by sophomore All-MWC selection Jennifer Oster. The Engelwood, Colo., native brings with her the Frogs’ fastest 100-fly times from a year ago. Sybesma could also work in junior Shannon Jones, sophomores Zrinka Korac and Kelsey Krug, as well as newcomers Sabine Rasch, Rupp, Kristi Dena and Alison Simon to get them some good experience early in their careers.

BACKSTROKEThe Frogs have a deep wealth of solid swimmers in this event. Junior Brittney Martinez leads the charge, followed by senior Crystal Shipps, junior Sammie Smith and Oster. Martinez s the top returner in the 100- and 200-back, listing times in the top-five of TCU’s all-time list.

“I am really expecting some great results in the backstroke events this season, because of the solid group we have returning,” Sybesma said. “I thought we really looked strong at the end of the season in the backstroke and I hope to see that momentum carry into this year.”

BREASTSTROKEAfter losing All-MWC selections Katie Rosen and Ellie Bradley during the offseason, sophomores Megan Higginbotham and Kelsey Krug will be counted on to fill the open spots in the breaststroke events in 2009-10. Higginbotham is the fastest returner in the breaststroke events, and will look from help from the supporting cast of Krug and freshman Maggie Smith for success.

“The breaststoke events are the biggest question marks heading into the season because we have solid breaststrokers, but we’ve got to have someone stand out,” Sybesma added.

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEYBolin, Sammie Smith, Higginbotham and Rupp will be looked upon in the individual medley events. Bolin is the top returner, while Grubb turned in TCU’s top times in 2008. Sybesma could also piece Maggie Smith into the mix for added depth.

DIVINGTCU diving coach Wayne Chester can be pleased with what the Horned Frogs have to offer from above. Between senior Jennifer Ferguson, junior Destiny Glampe and newcomer Kelsey Krause, he has a trio of divers coming into the season that can make in impact on the Frogs team score.

Ferguson, one of the premier divers in the MWC, is coming off of an outstanding junior season, earning All-MWC honors in the three-meter springboard and platform diving. She picked up 12 wins last season, including sweeping the both springboard events in four meets. The Beaconsfield, Quebec, product also snared the bronze medal for the three-meter dive at the 2009 MWC Championships.

“Jen Ferguson has been one of our top divers and holds the school record for the one-meter dive. She’s really going to be a difference maker in her senior year.”

2009-10 Men’s Preview

On the men’s side, head coach Richard Sybesma returns three TCU record holders and momentum from as strong spring season in 2009. After sputtering to a slow start, the Frogs dominated their final three meets and finished fifth at the Mountain West Conference Championships.

“In the men’s program, we are pretty solid in our quality of talent to our depth,” Sybesma said. ”If we can get everyone to mesh together, we are going to look pretty good.”

Starting with seniors Josh Bagby and Ben Biefnes, this TCU team will look to rebound after suffering their first losing season in 10 years.

“Bagby and Biefnes are our seniors and I feel good about our senior leadership from both of those guys.”

FREESTYLEBagby will lead the sprinters for TCU. The senior from Houston holds the top returning times in the 50- and 100- for the Frogs. He set the program record time in the 100-free (44.06) at the Austin Grand Prix and has been a mainstay on the Horned Frog relay squads since he walked on campus.

“Bagby is a school record holder and he’s obviously our top performer and one of our hardest workers,” Sybesma said. “He’s got the opportunity to have a phenomenal senior year, in and out of the water, because he’s going to be a leader.”

Joining Bagby in sprints will be Laszlo Gyurko, Ben Iannacone, Andrew Moore and newcomer Devin Price. Gyurko and Iannacone both saw time in the water a year ago and will look to be major contributors for TCU. Gyurko himself launched onto the collegiate scene in his freshman season after joining the roster in January, recording TCU’s fastest 200-free clocking (1:38.58), while placing in the top-three in the 50- and 100-free.

“Laszlo was a big boost to our freestyle depth last season,” Sybesma said. “We really need him to be that same spark this season.”

Expect to also see Dan Bodin, Rourke Barrett, Lance Cline and freshman Ross Van Allen to compete for mid-distance spots in Sybesma’s lineup.

In the distance events, the junior class duo of Trevor Woods and Mike Majek both return for the Frogs, looking to improve on their promising sophomore campaigns. Cline and freshman Chris Giesen could also see some freestyle reps for TCU.

BUTTERFLYHeadlining the butterfly unit for TCU will be sophomore Friedrich Grott. The Potsdam, Germany product made his mark on the Frogs’ record book after joining the club in last January, smashing former Frog Dave Weintraub and All-American Walter Soza’s program benchmarks in the 100- (47.99) and 200-fly (1:46.34), respectively.

“Friedrich is another one of those difference makers that can be one of the best in the Mountain West Conference,” Sybesama said. “He joined the team just in time to break two records at the Championships and I’m looking forward to having him for the full year this season.”

Also returning to the mix are juniors Edgar Peyro and Garret Weaver and 2008-09 TCU Freshman of the Year Scott Smidlein.

BREASTSTROKEBiefnes will offer leadership and depth to a stacked list of breaststrokers for TCU. Peyro returns with the top times in both events, while the Frogs also welcome 2008 Beijing Olympian Edgar Crespo and junior college transfer Andy Garcias-Montes into the water.

Crespo, a Panama City, Panama native, topped five other swimmers in Beijing to turn in the top time of the second heat of the men’s 100-breaststroke with a then personal-best time of 1:03.72. Garcia-Montes is a seven-time NJCAA All-American and three-time national champion from Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Fla.

“We will put some pressure on other MWC schools this season in the breaststroke,” Sybesma said. “Our men look good and I’m really impressed with the work they have put in to get ready for this season.”

BACKSTROKEJunior Jeff Gettel returns to continue TCU’s dominance in the backstroke events. Gettel went undefeated in the 200-back against the MWC last season while placing third on the squad in wins with a dozen victories.

“Jeff Gettel had a good summer and he’s going to be a difference maker.”

Gyurko, TCU’s top returner in the 100-back, along with Weaver and newcomers Devin Price and Nelson Head, are also top backstroke contenders and will challenge for relay positions.

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEYBiefnes, Grott and Peyro will also be looked to in the individual medley events this season. Grott, an All-MWC selection in the 200-IM, returns with TCU’s times in the 200- and 400-IM, followed closely by Peyro and Biefnes.

“We’ve got some good, solid swimmers that will put the Frogs’ where we need to be in the individual medley,” Sybesma said. “This is the event where our most versatile swimmers need to step up.”

Cline, Garcias-Montes and Crespo will also get a taste of the individual medley, adding depth, speed and consistency for TCU.

DIVINGWith the departure of two-time MWC champion and Horned Frog three-meter springboard record holder R.J. Hesselberg last season, Kyle Callens will take over the reigns as TCU’s lone male diver. The Deer Park, Texas native is no slouch himself, garnering the Frogs’ one-meter benchmark (341.62) in 2009.

“Kyle is going to be our only men’s diver, but we know that in any meet that we go into, we will be competitive in the diving events,” Sybesma said.

The 2009 All-MWC selection in the one- and three-meter springboard garnered the silver medal, behind Hesselberg, from the higher dive at the MWC Championships last season, while also excelling in the classroom as a All-MWC Scholar-Athlete honoree.

Women’s Top Times

For head coach Richard Sybesma and the TCU swimming and diving teams, the 2008-09 season was a breakthrough year, highlighted by 13 new school records, 16 All-Mountain West Conference team members and one MWC individual champion. The women’s squad finished the campaign with an 8-3-1 overall record and a seventh place finish in the MWC Championship standings, while the men earned a 4-5 record and a fifth place finish in Oklahoma City.

The Frogs’ 16 All-MWC members compiled honors in 23 events, as TCU also ended the season with eight MWC Swimmer/Diver of the Week award winners. Out of the water, both squads earned Academic All-America status for their outstanding achievements in the classroom.

The Frogs kicked off the season in Keller, Texas for the North Texas Relays. Squaring off against some of the stiffest competition in the Metroplex, the women garnered runner-up honors behind only SMU, while the men captured third place. TCU would have to make a quick turnaround, hosting Missouri State at the University Rec Center the following day for the home opener.

Against the Bears, freshman Ashley Bolin and Maria Paula Alvarez paced the squad with a pair of individual wins, while also serving on the winning 400-medley team. Newcomer Kaitlyn Vann also earned her first collegiate win with the top time in the 1000-free. Junior Josh Bagby and sophomore Jeff Gettel also pocketed wins, while senior R.J. Hesselberg swept the diving events. The Frogs’ split the meet, as the women’s triumphed by a score of 72-41, while the men dropped a 67-46 decision.

After both teams swept UT-Permian Basin in Andrews, Texas, TCU returned home to open up the MWC slate, hosting BYU and Colorado State. Hesselberg highlighted the action against the Cougars, setting the school record for the three-meter dive with a score of 380.10 and surpassing his previous benchmark of 359.80 to win the 2008 MWC individual championship.

Bagby and sophomore Edgar Peyro also excelled, leading the squad with two wins apiece. Bagby took care of the 50-free and 100-free, while Peyro came up big for the Frogs late in the meet to top the field in the 200-breast and the 200-IM.

Colorado State came into Fort Worth riding an unbeaten 4-0 record, but TCU slammed the door on the Rams in the final home meet of the fall with a 128-115 victory. Alvarez broke the TCU record

in the 1000-free for the first of many times this season, while junior Jennifer Ferguson swept the diving events. Senior Katie Rosen and junior Stephanie Futscher and Vann were among other event winners for the Frogs.

The Purple and White followed the win with its first road trip outside of the Lone Star State, heading into MWC battlegrounds against the Air Force Academy and Wyoming. The women claimed 10 of the 13 events against the Falcons for a 128-111 victory, while the men struggled at altitude, fighting to a 128-105 loss. Amongst the winners for TCU, sophomore Nikki Pappas and freshman Megan Higginbotham were welcomed into the win column for the first time of the season. Colorado-native Jennifer Oster also claimed her inaugural victory in the 200-fly.

Two days later, both teams struggled in Laramie, as the women took the top spot in six of the 16 events, falling short by a score of 168-131, while the men won five events and dropped the meet, 191.5-106.5. For the third-straight meet, Bolin tacked on a pair of victories, while sophomore Brittney Martinez captured her first win of the year in the 200-back.

The Frogs capped off the fall semester with a trip to Atlanta, Ga., for the 2008 ConocoPhillips/USA Swimming Short Course National Championships. Bagby took advantage of the adrenaline and momentum that comes in a big meet to break the TCU 100-free record, re-writing Jonathan Berrettini’s previous school-record time of 44.70 set in 2007 with a time of 44.64 in the preliminary heat.

The women’s 800-free relay squad of Bolin, Vann, Lindsey Stevens and Futscher also recorded an impressive showing, notching the school’s third-fastest time of 7:30.63.

Despite getting off to a rocky start with a pair of losses at UNLV to begin the spring schedule, the Frogs turned their seasons around, recording a combined record of 7-0-1 in the final eight meets of the regular season.

One of the biggest meets of the spring came against Utah on Jan. 9. The men toppled the Utes for the third-straight season, 145-92, while the women ended the night cinched at 121.5-121.5. Newcomers Laszlo Gyurko and Friedrich Grott made their first appearances in Purple and White after joining the roster at the beginning of the semester, serving as integral parts in the Frogs’ winning 200-free and 200-medley relays.

Sophomore Jeff Gettel continued his dominance against the MWC in the 200-back, extending his unbeaten streak to five meets.

On the women’s side, Alvarez stole the show by breaking the TCU 1000-free record for the second time in the week, shaving off nearly three seconds with a lifetime-best clocking of 10:08.80.

On senior day, TCU picked up a trio of victories over San Diego State and Centenary College. In his final home meet of his career, senior Jason Hauck notched a pair of victories in the 100-fly and 100-free. Gyurko and freshman Jack Doran also claimed double-event wins, while the women won 14 of the 16 events, including both the 200-medley and 400-free relays, including six Frogs adding up to all 12 individual victories.

Sophomore diver Kyle Callens stole headlines in the final men’s meet of the year, shattering the TCU one-meter springboard record with a 341.62 scorecard at Incarnate Word in San Antonio. The Deer Park, Texas native surpassed former Frog Kelly McCain’s mark of 335.10 from 2006 and earned his third one-meter win of the season.

At the MWC Championships in Oklahoma City, the men’s diving core of Hesselberg and Callens turned in the top performance, registering the top two spots in the three-meter springboard, respectively. Ferguson also represented the Purple and White with a bronze medal from the three-meter dive on the women’s side.

Alvarez claimed TCU’s second silver medal of the Championships, taking runner-up honors in the 1650-free. Alvarez swam the mile in 16:43.68, blowing out the TCU benchmark set by Megan Ryther in 1998 by nearly nine seconds.

Rosen and Grott each earned bronze medals in the final day of action. Rosen, a St. Louis, Mo., product swam a 2:17.54 in the 200-breast, serving as the second-fastest time in Horned Frog history. Grott rewrote the TCU 200-fly record with a time of 1:46.34, erasing former Frog All-American and Olympian Walter Soza’s time of 1:47.85 from 1994.

Grott also removed the Frogs’ 100-fly record that stood for 17 years, claiming fifth place after hitting the wall at 47.99. The Potsdam, Germany, native has enjoyed an impressive week in Oklahoma City as a member of the TCU’s record-breaking 200-medley relay and also finishing fifth in the 200-IM.

Bolin reset the 200-free record twice during the Championships, once as the leadoff leg for the 800-free relay and again later in the week. The Oshkosh, Wis., product joined Alvarez, Stevens and Vann claim a bronze medal race with the fastest 800-free clocking in TCU history at 7:20.69.

The men’s 200-free relay team of Gyurko, Doran, Josh Schifferer and Bagby registered the second-fastest time of 1:21.14 to finish in third place for bronze.

Futscher broke Gretchen Brannon’s 19-year-old 200-fly school record of 2:01.16 during her preliminary heat, clocking in at 2:00.33. Bagby took fourth place in the 100-free, breaking his Frog school record time, clocking in at 44.42.

TCU’s last chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships came after the MWC Championships at the Austin Grand Prix. Competing against some of the top talent in the world, Bagby broke the school record in the 100-free for the third time this season, clocking in at 44.06.

The Frogs say farewell to six seniors, the first class to compete in the MWC in all four years on campus. Forty-two athletes, including six TCU record holders, will return for another climb towards a Mountain West Conference title in 2009-10.

Men’s Top Relay Times


2009 MWC Championships Recap

DAY ONEThe opening action included the men’s and women’s 200- medley and 800-free relays, as well as the men’s one-meter and women’s three-meter springboard.

The women’s 200-medley relay of Brittney Martinez, Ellie Bradley, Stephanie Futscher and Zrinka Korac opened the action by setting a new benchmark time of 1:43.60 to finish in seventh place for the second-straight year. The Frogs snapped the previous record of 1:44.11 that was set in 2004 by Erin Irons, Leann Carthcart, Tiffany Strawn and Erica Tate.

Not to be outdone, the men’s 200-medley relay squad of Laszlo Gyurko, Edgar Peyro, Friedrich Grott and Jack Doran followed by breaking it’s own school record with a time of 1:29.36 to finish in the fifth spot. TCU eclipsed the 2007 quartet of Jonathon Berrettini, Aran Bean, Guillermo Ramirez and Josh Bagby that clocked in at 1:30.12 during the 2007 MWC Championships.

Junior diver Jennifer Ferguson earned TCU’s first medal of the Championships, claiming bronze from the three-meter dive with a score of 296.95. The tally is the fifth-best performance by a Horned Frog, as Ferguson now holds four of the top-five all-time scores from the three-meter springboard. The medal is the first of her career.

Kyle Callens and R.J. Hesselberg each advanced to the finals of the one-meter springboard, finishing in fourth and sixth place, respectively. Callens, a Deer Park, Texas product, ended the event with a 293.00 scorecard, while Hesselberg followed with a 287.55 score.

Leading off the women’s 800-free relay, freshman Ashley Bolin used her opening leg to break the Frogs’ 200-free mark with a time of 1:48.96, topping Maria Paula Alvarez’ mark of 1:51.10 set last season. Alvarez, Lindsey Stevens and Kaitlyn Vann finished the race in third for a bronze medal with a clocking of 7:20.69.

The men’s 800-free relay of Bagby, Gyurko, Ben Biefnes and Jason Hauck turned in a fourth place finish with a time of 6:39.88 in the final event of the day, missing the school record by half of a second.

The Frogs return to action Thursday, competing in the 500-free, 200-IM, 50-free, 200-free relay and the men’s three-meter and women’s one-meter springboards.

DAY TWOHesselberg and Callens highlighted the evening for TCU, taking the top two spots in the men’s three-meter springboard, respectively. Hesselberg earned his second-straight three-meter gold medal with a score of 336.70, giving him 27 wins in his TCU career. Callens claimed the silver medal for scoring 333.25, garnering his second-straight runner-up finish at the MWC Championships after claiming second place in the one-meter in 2008.

The Frogs’ 200-free relay team of Gyurko, Doran, Josh Schifferer and Bagby registered the second-fastest time of 1:21.14 to finish in third place for bronze. Bagby, also equaled his season-best time of 20.43 to finish in eighth place in the 50-free.

Grott claimed fifth place in the 200-IM with a time of 1:49.16, falling just short of topping former All-American Walter Soza’s TCU record clocking of 1:47.48. Peyro and Jeff Gettel also turned times in the top-15. Peyro, an El Paso, Texas product, re-wrote his personal-best time by clocking in at 1:51.11, while Gettel hit the wall two seconds later at 1:53.11.

Four Frogs finished in the top-15 for the women’s 500-free finals. Bolin broke the TCU record with a fifth place time of 4:52.89. Bolin claimed the Frogs’ 200-free benchmark Wednesday night while leading off the women’s 800-free relay

Alvarez registered her career-best 500-free time at 4:53.35 to finish in 10th place, while Vann turned in her fastest time as a Frog at 4:57.97. Futscher earned the 15th spot with a time of 5:01.54. Futscher, an Irving, Texas native, set a personal-best time in the 500-free during the preliminary heat, timing at 4:59.23.

DAY THREEGrott erased the Frogs’ 100-fly record that stood for 17 years, claiming fifth place after hitting the wall at 47.99. The Potsdam, Germany, native has enjoyed an impressive week in Oklahoma City as a member of the TCU’s record-breaking 200-medley relay and also finishing fifth in the 200-IM.

Biefnes and Peyro both reached the finals in the 400-IM. Peyro turned in a season-best time of 4:01.24 to earned a seventh place finish, while Biefnes followed in the eighth spot at 4:02.29, besting his 10th place finish at last season’s championships.

Three Frogs clocked in top-15 times in the women’s 100-fly, led by freshman Jennifer Oster. The Engelwood, Colo., product recorded the third-fastest time in program history at 56.04 to finish in eighth place. Korac took the ninth spot at 56.16, the fourth-best time ever by a Frog, while Futscher registered the sixth-best time at 56.79 for 13th place.

TCU’s women also stood out in the field for the 200-free, placing four swimmers in the top-15. After setting the TCU 200-free record as the leadoff leg of the 800-free relay, Bolin reset her new record Friday with a time of 1:48.61 to take fourth in the event. Vann swam her personal-best time of 1:52.16 for a 13th place finish, followed by Alvarez (1:52.61) and Stevens (1:52.74) for 14th and 15th place, respectively.

Gyurko continued to impress, placing seventh in the 200-free with the third-fastest time in TCU history at 1:38.58. Sophomore Mike Majek ended in 12th place at 1:39.39, while Bagby closed in 14th with a personal-best time of 1:40.74.

Gyurko also led all Frogs with an eighth place time of 49.57 in the 100-back, while Doran (49.72) and Gettel (50.33) followed in ninth and 11th, respectively.

Bradley and senior Katie Rosen swam well in the 100-breast. Bradley claimed sixth place at 1:03.99, while Rosen finished in 12th at 1:04.31. Martinez turned in the third-best 100-back time in school history of 57.04 during the preliminary heat, while finishing in 14th place during the finals with the fifth-fastest TCU time of 57.10.

Ending the night on a high note, the women’s 400-medley relay of Martinez, Bradley, Oster and Bolin earned a seventh place finish at 3:48.52, the second-quickest time in school history.

DAY FOURAlvarez claimed TCU’s second silver medal of the Championships, taking runner-up honors in the 1650-free. Alvarez swam the mile in 16:43.68, blowing out the TCU benchmark set by Megan Ryther in 1998 by nearly nine seconds. Alvarez now holds the school record times for the 1000- and 1650- free. She had previously held the mark for the 200- and 500-free before Bolin topped her during the week.

Rosen and Grott each earned bronze medals in the final day of action. Rosen, a St. Louis, Mo., product swam a 2:17.54 in the 200-breast, serving as the second-fastest time in Horned Frog history. Grott rewrote the TCU 200-fly record with a time of 1:46.34, erasing Soza’s time of 1:47.85 from 1994.

Bagby took fourth place in the 100-free, breaking his Frog school record time, clocking in at 44.42. Bagby now holds the two best times for the 100-free after initially setting the record at the Conoco/Phillips Short Course National Championships in December in Atlanta, Ga. Gyurko followed Bagby with a 10th-place time of 45.45.

Futscher earned a fifth-place finish in the 200-fly finals, hitting the wall at 2:01.21. During the preliminary heat, the Irving, Texas native broke Gretchen Brannon’s school record of 2:01.16 by clocking in at 2:00.33. Martinez recorded the second-fastest time in school history for the 200-back, finishing in 12th place at 2:01.63. Martinez missed Jamie MacCurdy’s record of 2:01.10 by nearly half of a second. Oster followed finishing in a tie for 15th with a time of 2:02.06, the fifth-fastest time in TCU history.

Ferguson wrapped up her MWC Championships with a fifth place finish in the women’ platform dive with a score of 215.75, improving from her eighth place finish from a year ago. Hesselberg just missed the medal stand, claiming fourth place on the men’s platform with a career-high mark of 313.50, while sophomore Callens ended the night in 14th place with an 188.65 score.

Four Frogs claimed spots in the top-15 of the 200-back, headlined by Garret Weaver in 11th place at 1:51.64. Doran, Gettel and Trevor Woods finished in 12th, 13th and 15th place, respectively.

The men’s 400-free relay squad of Gyurko, Jack Doran, Ben Iannacone and Bagby registered the second-fastest time in school history to finish in fourth place, while the women’s quartet of Bolin, Vann, Alvarez and Korac turned out the fourth-best time in program history for a sixth place finish.

2010 Mountain West Conference Championships

February 24-27 | Oklahoma City Community College

For the 11th consecutive year, the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatic Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. will serve as the host site for the MWC Championships, which will run from Wednesday, February 24 through Saturday, February 27, 2010.

In 2009, TCU erupted for 11 new program records with 13 Horned Frogs returning to Fort Worth with at least one medal. At the end of the week, 16 H2O Frogs earned All-MWC accolades in 23 events.
