COACHES & STAFF

Bill Tramel enters his fi rst season at the helm of the Marshall Swimming and Diving Program.

Tramel comes to the Thundering Herd after spending the past eight years with the Minnesota Golden Gophers men's and women's swimming and diving squads. He spent the past two seasons as the associate head coach of the Gophers.

Since beginning his time at Minnesota, Tramel led the men to conference titles in 2005 and 2007, while posting 11th place fi nishes at the NCAA Championships in 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2009. In 2007, the Gophers earned a 10th place fi nish.

During his fi nal season at UM, Tramel led the women's team to a Big Ten title, his only year coaching the ladies.

Tramel has become one of the nation's top distance coaches in country as he had at least one swimmer invited to the NCAA Championships in the 1650-yard freestyle in every season since 1998. He also coached 54 All-American selections during his career. Additionally, Tramel was the primary coach of Alex Wold who was named to the U.S. National Team in 2009.

The University of Missouri grad's coaching re-sume includes stints at Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Missouri. In his combined time coaching, Tramel has placed a swimmer in the top 20 at the NCAA Championships 18 times. Combined, his teams have won 10 confer-ence championships.

At UNC, Tramel coached more than 40 All-America honorees and over 35 NCAA individual qualifi ers. He directly coached 15 Atlantic Coast Conference individual champions, four ACC Championship meet record holders and 12 athletes to UNC school record performances. Tramel assisted in the coaching of Jessica Per-ruquet, who won the 200-yard freestyle at the 2003 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. He also coached Sean Quinn, who placed fi fth in the 200 breaststroke at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Before his stint at UNC, Tramel spent a year as an assistant coach at the University of Georgia. While at Geor-gia, the St. Louis, Mo., native worked alongside three-time U.S. Olympic coach Jack Bauerle. He helped lead the Bulldogs' women's team to a nine-spot improvement at the NCAA level -- from 15th place in 1994 to sixth place in 1995 as well as to the NCAA women's championship in the 200-yard freestyle relay that year. Tramel also acted as recruiting coordinator and helped lay the foundation of three straight national champion Bulldog teams. Tramel's recruiting class won Georgia's fi rst national title when they were seniors.

He also served for two years as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the University of South Carolina's men's swimming program from 1992-94. During Tramel's stay, the Gamecocks moved from a 37th-place fi nish at the NCAA meet to 19th place.

Prior to his work at South Carolina, Tramel spent two years as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's swimming programs at his alma mater, University of Missouri. He had been a member of the Tiger swimming team and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in consumer economics in 1992.

His early coaching duties were also as an assistant age group coach at the Sugar Creek Swim Club in St. Louis, Mo, in 1988. A year later, he was the assistant age group coach for the St. Louis Aquajets.

Under Zagaria, Marshall divers have set program fi rsts.

In the 2009-10 season, Marshall sent multiple divers to the NCAA Zones. Under Zagaria’s direction, Rachel Han-num, Haley Holmquist and Lauren Rone qualifi ed for MU. Rone became the second MU freshman to qualify for the event.

Rone returned to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in the 2011-12 season and fi nished 38th. At the college level, Zagaria has coached at the College of St. Catherine (2003-06), the University of St. Thomas (2003-05) and the University of Minnesota (2006-07). From 2003-06 he produced a fi nalist in both the one-meter and three-meter dives at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship. At UM he coached Big Ten fi nalists in the one-meter, three-meter and platform events; along with Divers of the Week and NCAA Zone qualifi ers. The Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium, which is located in the Cam Henderson Center on the Marshall University campus, is the home of the Marshall women's swimming & diving program.

The Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium, an 800-seat swimming area, was opened in 1981 as part of the Cam Henderson Center. The natatorium was named in honor of a former professor and chair of physical education. In 2002, the natatorium was updated with a $300,000 renovation of the swimming arena. The most important element of that project was the installation of a movable bulkhead (wall). The bulkhead can transform the pool to be compatible for meter and yardage swim meets.

Other aspects of the renovation included a new fi ltration system, state-of-the-art starting and timing system, a complete paint job on the ceiling and deck tiles, new diving boards, competition fl ags and a new sound system. It also included the addition of VASA, Power Reel and Power Rack training equipment to the complex, as well as regular pool training equipment.
