NIBERT NEEDS ONE MORE... Head coach Gregg Nibert needs just one more win to reach 350 for his career. Nibert currently sports a 349-272 career mark, all of which has been at PC. Nibert nearly recorded the 350th career win in the home finale, but the Blue Hose lost a 77-76 overtime thriller to Gardner-Webb.

OVER HALF THE TIME After shooting 48.3 percent in the opening half against Gardner-Webb, the Blue Hose came out on fire in the final 25 minutes of play (second half and overtime). The team combined to shoot 12-of-21 for 57.1 percent after the break. PC tallied a 51.8 shooting percentage on the day. It marks the sixth time this season that PC has connected on over half its attempts in a game.

FOUR IN DOUBLE FIGURES In the overtime loss to Gardner-Webb, the Presbyterian College men’s basketball team had four players in double figures. Jake Troyli and Chase Holmes led the way with 18 points apiece while Khalid Mutakabbir tied his career high with 14. Travis Smith chipped in 12 for the Blue Hose.

TROYLI TAKES THE TEAM HOME In the closing minute of the game at Jacksonville State in the Bracketbusters, Presbyterian College’s Jake Troyli commanded the ball from his teammates. Knowing that he was going to be fouled, Troyli calmly went to the line and sank all four charity tosses, essentially sinking the Gamecocks. For the game, Troyli was a cool seven-of-eight from the charity stripe.

ALLEN’S ARSENAL Redshirt-junior Walt Allen has put on a scoring display this season compared to his previous years at PC. However, fans may not realize that Allen can dish the rock as well. In the win over JSU, all Allen did was lead the team in three categories with 14 points, six rebounds and dished out a career-high four assists. Allen was spectacular from the floor, canning one long three-ball from about 30 feet out. He hit five-of-seven from the floor, both foul shots and for good measure, had a steal.

COMING OUT HOT Head coach Gregg Nibert always talks about coming out quickly – and the Blue Hose did so in the first half against the Gamecocks. PC hit its first five shots from the floor for a 12-6 advantage. In fact, the Blue Hose converted 14-of-21 shots (66.7 percent) in the first 20 minutes.

MONUMENTAL WIN The road win was a very important one for the young PC squad. In addition to it being the first road win of the season (1-16), it gives the Blue Hose some momentum heading into the final week of the season where the squad will play two of its three remaining games on the road. It also moved PC to 1-0 all-time in

the BracketBusters.

EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE The win was even more impressive of a feat since PC has the youngest team in the nation. In fact, the Blue Hose had not won a road game since downing High Point a year ago on Dec. 6, 2008 – a string of 27 straight defeats.

MOST IMPRESSIVE Although the road win was very nice and an impressive feat, what some may not realize is that the win was PC’s second non-conference road victory since moving to Division I. The only other non-conference win the Blue Hose have was a defeat of Army on Dec. 1, 2008.

ALMOST WIRE TO WIRE The Gamecocks came out and scored the first bucket of the game, a straight-away three-point attempt. However, PC scored on its next two possessions, taking a 5-3 lead. The Blue Hose never trailed again in the contest. Head coach Gregg Nibert’s team was in front for 38:07 of the 40 minutes played.

MUTAKABBIR IS BECOMING THE 40-MINUTE MAN The Gamecocks came out and scored the first bucket of the game, a straight-away three-point attempt. However, PC scored on its next two possessions, taking a 5-3 lead. The Blue Hose never trailed again in the contest. Head coach Gregg Nibert’s team was in front for 38:07 of the 40 minutes played.

MUTAKABBIR IS BECOMING THE 40-MINUTE MAN Rookie Khalid Mutakabbir is becoming a staple in the Blue Hose basketball program. Mutakabbir has not come out of the last three ball games, including the overtime loss against UNC Asheville. This season, he has played in every minute on four occasions. Four times this season, Mutakabbir has been out of the contest for just one minute.

SOLID BENCH PLAY Head coach Gregg Nibert’s team was looking for a spark off the bench against Jacksonville State – and he surely got it. Kevin Davis, Chase Holmes and Jay Reynolds all provided a lot off the bench. The trio combined for 13 points on six-of-10 shooting from the floor. Reynolds accounted for four rebounds and a block while Holmes had two steals. Davis dished out an assist. In all, PC’s bench out-scored JSU 13-4.

WALT DOES IT AGAIN For just the second time in his career, redshirt-junior Walt Allen recorded a double-double. In the overtime loss to UNC Asheville, Allen tallied 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

THE LAST TIME ...It marked just the second time in his career that he had reached double figures for rebounds, with his previous career high of 10 against VMI. The 11 rebounds also marked the second-most boards grabbed by a Blue Hose player this season. Redshirt-freshman Jake Troyli had 13 rebounds in the win over Montreat.

MORE ON WALT With a few minutes remaining in the game, Walt Allen had already collected double figures for rebounds. However, it wasn’t until there was a second left on the clock when Allen launched a three-point attempt that found the bottom of the net. That three-ball gave him his double-double, making the final score 69-66 in favor of UNC Asheville.

MORE PT FOR MUTAKABBIR After playing all 45 minutes in the overtime loss against UNC Asheville, rookie Khalid Mutakabbir moved into first place in conference games for minutes played. He is currently averaging 36.40 minutes per contest in Big South play, two full minutes ahead the second-place tandem of Jeremy Sexton and Jamarco Warren of Charleston Southern. The 45 minutes played also propelled him in front of Art Parkahouski, the preseason Big South Player of the Year for first in minutes played for all games. For the season, Mutakabbir is averaging 34.48 minutes per game while Parkahouski is playing 34.38 minutes.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING The PC-Jacksonville State contest is the first time that the Blue Hose have been selected to play in the Bracketbusters event. The squad, in its third season of transition into Division I, was one of four Big South Conference schools selected to play in the prestigious event. Since the Blue Hose will head to Jacksonville State this year, the team will get a return game from the Gamecocks in the near future. The all-time series against PC is tied 1-1, with JSU having won a 110-79 decision during the 1971-72 season. On Feb. 20, 2010, PC won a 59-55 battle. The game was also the first for head coach Gregg Nibert’s team against an Ohio Valley Conference foe since making the move to Division I.

LOOKING TO STOP THE TREND On Feb. 20, PC looked to win its first road game of the season. The Blue Hose had an 0-16 road record this season before the four-point win at JSU. However, that mark does not justify how close head coach Gregg Nibert’s team has come to winning multiple games on the road. The squad lost a four-point decision at Furman in the second game of the season. The team was within one of Dayton on the road at the break. Once it entered conference play, PC lost in overtime at Charleston Southern and at Gardner-Webb. At Liberty, the Blue Hose had a three-point shot at the buzzer that rimmed out. That shot would have put the game into overtime. The last time the Blue Hose won a road game was Dec. 6, 2008. On that day, PC moved to 2-0 in the Big South Conference with a 70-53 victory at High Point.

BOOST OFF THE BENCH At Winthrop, rookie Ryan Hargrave provided a huge spark for the Blue Hose after coming off the bench. In just 17 minutes of

play, Hargrave notched 11 points and six rebounds. It marked the third time this season that Hargrave had scored in double figures. It was the first time that Hargrave had netted double figures when

The 2009-10 season will be head coach Gregg Nibert’s 21st in charge of the Presbyterian College men’s basketball team. The winningest coach in the program’s history, Nibert has led the Blue Hose to 344 wins during his 20 years at the helm of the team. Overall, PC has compiled a record of 344-248 during his tenure. In his first season in the Big South Conference, Nibert guided the Blue Hose to a .500 record, finishing the year 9-9 in conference play. The squad put together some tremendous wins, including victories over UC Davis, San Jose State and Army in non-conference play. During the Big South portion of the schedule, Nibert’s team began its history in the league by posting wins at Coastal Carolina and High Point. The squad was on TV three times, including the Nov. 10 season-opener at Duke, which was televised by ESPNU. The game marked the first nationally televised contest for any Blue Hose team in school history. Al’Lonzo Coleman was recognized as a second-team all-conference selection for his tremendous effort while also garnering a place on the all-academic team. Nibert is the first men’s basketball coach in Presbyterian College history to reach the 300-win plateau, an honor he reached during the 2005-06 season after becoming the first to accomplish 200 wins at PC in the 2000-01 season. Chase Holmes picked up the Freshman of the Week award aver scoring a career-high 24 points en route to a victory over VMI in which PC held the Keydets

to 38 points below their NCAA-leading points per game average. During his 20-year tenure at Presbyterian College, Nibert has compiled six 20-win seasons. His Blue Hose teams finished in the top four in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular season standings 14 times, winning the SAC Championship twice (1992-93 & 1996-97) and the Food Lion SAC Tournament title once (1995-96). He has also been named the SAC Coach-of-the-Year twice for his efforts (1993 and 1997). Nibert is also the only coach in the history of PC basketball to lead the institution to two different postseason tournaments; guiding the Blue Hose to the NAIA National Tournament in 1993 and the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament in 1996, 1997, 2003, and 2006. Nibert is also the only coach in the history of the SAC to coach a squad to the “Sweet 16” of the Division II Tournament. Even more impressive, Nibert has seen 51 out of his 51 seniors graduate from Presbyterian during his tenure. Last season, Nibert guided the Blue Hose into their first NCAA Division I season. Nibert led PC to its first ever win at the NCAA Division I level on Dec. 1, 2007 when the Blue Hose defeated Big South Conference foe Radford, 62-60, at the Templeton Center. Overall, PC finished its first NCAA Division I season with five victories. The Blue Hose won all five of their games at home to enter the 2008-09 campaign in the midst of a 12-game home winning streak, which places them tied for the 14th longest active home winning streak in all of NCAA Division I men’s basketball. One year earlier in their final year in NCAA Division II in the 2006-07 season, the Blue Hose posted a 20-9 record to finish with two consecutive 20-win seasons. PC concluded SAC regular season play in second with a 12-4 mark and advanced to the Food Lion SAC Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinals where they fell to tournament champion and NCAA Division II Elite Eight participant Wingate. In the 2005-06 campaign, PC compiled a 25-10 overall record including a 10-4 ledger in the South Atlantic Conference, good for a tie at second place in the league. The Blue Hose advanced to the finals of the 2006 Food Lion/SAC Tournament, which earned them an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament, where they advanced to the semifinals. In the 2004-05 season, Nibert led the Blue Hose to an 18-11 overall record and a tie for third place in the SAC regular season. In addition, the Blue Hose advanced to the semifinals of the 2005 Food Lion SAC Tournament. Nibert led the Blue Hose to a program record-tying 27 wins against nine losses in the 2002-03 season. The team compiled a 9-5 mark in SAC play, good for a fourth-place finish. In the Food Lion SAC Tournament, PC upset #1 seed Carson-Newman College 69-52 in the semifinals before falling 71-62 to the #3 seed Lenoir-Rhyne College. The Blue Hose received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional and entered the postseason tournament as the No. 8 seed. In the opening round, PC upset #1 seed and No. 13-ranked Columbus State University, 71-59. In the semifinals, PC knocked off the

#5 seed Shaw University, 77-58, to advance to the “Sweet 16.” PC’s “cinderella run” through the NCAA Tournament ended at the hands of #2 seed Bowie State University, 67-53, in the region championship game. Nibert’s 1996-97 squad posted a 20-7 overall record, which included the program’s second SAC regular season title along with its second straight trip to the NCAA Division II national

the Coach of the Year for the state of South Carolina, the South Atlantic Conference and NAIA District 26. Well respected among fellow coaches, Nibert has been a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches for 30 years and has also been a NABC Division II Basketball Congressman. Nibert has also established one of the largest basketball team camps in the country over the course of his time at PC. The Camp of Champions Team Camp is in its 19th year and has attracted thousands of kids to the Presbyterian College campus. Nibert, a 1979 graduate of Marietta College, began his coaching career at Rice University where he served as an assistant coach under Mike Schuler, who would later earn NBA Coach of the Year honors with the Portland Trailblazers. In 1981, Nibert moved with fellow Owl aide Butch Estes to Clinton, S.C., when Estes accepted Presbyterian’s head coaching job. The Blue Hose would record a 57-35 ledger over the next three seasons, including a pair of 20-win campaigns. Nibert then moved to Furman University as a part-time assistant coach under Paladin mentor Gene Davis. One year later, Estes took Davis’ spot at the helm of Furman’s program and Nibert was shifted to the full-time assistant’s post, a slot he would man until being named Presbyterian’s 17th head basketball coach on April 26, 1989. While a student-athlete at Marietta, Nibert, a native of Grove City, Ohio, earned Most Improved Player honors during his junior season and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player following his senior campaign. Nibert is married to the former Peggy Harling of Simpsonville, S.C., and the couple has two sons, Shaun (19) and Van (15). Shaun is a sophomore at PC, and Van is a sophomore at Clinton High School.
