Don’t Fool With Us Parents!

An elderly man in Florida calls his son in Michigan and says, “I hate to ruin

your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing…forty-

five years of misery is enough.” Pop, what are you talking about?” the son

screams. “We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,” the old man

says. “Were sick of each other, and I’m sick of talking about this, so you call

your sister in Vermont and tell her,” and he hangs up. Frantic, the son calls

his sister, who explodes on the phone. “Like heck they’re getting divorced,”

she shouts, “I’ll take care of this.”

She calls her dad immediately, and screams at the old man, “You are Not

getting divorced! Don’t do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my

brother back, and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a thing,

DO YOU HEAR ME?” and then hangs up.

The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife…Okay, “he says,”

They’re coming for our anniversary and paying their own airfares.”

First I want to congratulate Phyllis, on a wonderful job of doing the newsletter. Much better than I ever

did. A few people here at Southfork have said they missed my humor. Well, I have been on a humor

leave but I do have a story to tell you.

This past New Year’s Eve found me in the hospital scheduled for an operation to remove hemorrhoids.

So while others donned party hats and sipping champagne at the clubhouse, I wore a hospital gown and

washed down painkillers. That’s not to say the holiday spirit was completely absent. The next day,

January 1st, I woke up to a banner on my bedroom wall. “It screamed“

Recipe of the Month

Cranberry Biscotti

1 (15.6 oz) pkg, Pillsbury Cranberry Quick Bread mix

½ cup butter, melted

2 eggs, slightly beaten

½ cup white vanilla chips

2 to 5 tablespoons flour

½ cup white vanilla chips, melted (or any white icing)

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray large cookie sheet with non-stick cooking spray.

2. In large bowl, combine bread mix, butter and eggs; stir 50 to 75 strokes with spoon

until mix is moistened. (Dough will be sticky.) Stir in ½ cup vanilla chips.

3. Sprinkle work surface with 1 to 2 tablespoons of the flour. Turn dough out onto floured

surface. Roll dough into a ball, adding flour if necessary to prevent sticking.

4. Divide dough in half; place on sprayed cookie sheet. Form each half into 9x3 (approx)

loaf, placing 4 inches apart. Flatten tops slightly.

5. Bake at 350 degrees for 23 to 30 minutes or until light golden brown. Remove from

oven and cool for 15 minutes.

6. On cutting board, cut each loaf into ¾ inch slices.

7. Drizzle with melted vanilla chips or white icing (optional). Serve warm or cool.

At the November Association meeting , the members voted approval for the purchase of a new bingo

machine. I know that our fantastic bingo caller, Phil McPheron, will be happy that he isn’t risking

electrical shock every time he turns the machine on and our bingo players will enjoy being able to see all

the numbers light up again.

We also nominated a slate of candidates for officers for 2009. They are: President, Dot Cady; Vice

President, Tony Trubiano; Treasurer, Dick Brown; Secretary, Marge Morrison; Board members, Jim

Morvatz and Phyllis Grossi and Tom Geyer and Ted Sternhardt.

Since this is an end of the year message, I would like to thank all of the great volunteers who work so

hard all year to keep our association and it’s activities going. There isn’t room here to name everyone

who has helped, but please know that you are appreciated. There could be no association without you.

I would like to encourage more participation by homeowners in the Southfork association. It really is true

that there is strength in numbers. The Association is our best way of connecting with management and

getting things done. It was mainly through the efforts of some of our members that the landscaping at the

clubhouse was updated. It is really easy to join and participate. Just ask someone you know who is a

member or call any officer. Then, offer to help out. You will get to know lots of nice people and have

fun, too.

I need to correct an error in last month’s newsletter. Norm Spence, our onsite manager, donated $75.00,

not $50.00 to our turkey dinner. He also donated funds for advertising our yard sale. He agreed to help

out when I met with him in early November and asked for those contributions.

The daylight seems so short and the excitement of the holidays is behind us. We find ourselves in a

month named after the Roman God, Janus, who had two faces so he could look ahead toward the future

and back toward the past at the same time. We too are a little like Janus.

We welcome 2009 with faith, optimism, patience, courage and hope and success. We have witnessed

countless people come forward to connect and offer any support needed and have been shown, without

exception, kindness in abundance. At Southfork, a certain energy and excitement is felt in each and

every new day.

Our community has never failed at displaying a can-do attitude. The activities that are already underway

will help to ensure future happiness and contentment for our residents beyond words.So please, make this

a successful year and please join the many groups, committees and association to ensure a pleasing place

to live and have fun here in SOUTHFORK!

Association Board Highlights

Welcome to yet another New Year! We are hoping that we have lots of people willing to jump in

and participate in the activities as the months continue to fly by.

It’s nice to see the crowds gathering on Wednesday evenings for burgers and dogs, and I

understand that the new crew is doing a terrific job. I really must get up for some of that chili

sauce that I’m hearing about!

Our December potluck was another success , a nice group of about 60 brought a varied array of

foods to accompany the baked ham. Management again gave us the meat donation, for which we

are thankful.

We will have entertainment once again at Southfork when LEN & LOIS perform on Saturday

evening, January 31st, providing music for your dancing and listening pleasure, between 7-10pm.

They suggest that people come with snacks and beverages and have an enjoyable evening! We

are hoping for a good attendance, so mark it on your calendars.

Please note that our annual association meeting and election of officers is approaching on

January 26th and in order to nominate or vote, your membership dues must be paid. A quorum is

also required in order for this election to take place and so we urge you to support the association

and your presence and with your membership. We are still striving to become a 100%

membership community and maybe this will be the year we are successful!!!!!

�ovember Association Meeting Highlights The first meeting of the fall season was held on Monday, November 24th at 9am. There were

many people with 53 membership households in attendance (1 count for each household.)

Some of the topics discussed included: 1. Entertainment costs and further research on fees

charged by the entertainment will be made. 2. The raising of budget for activities from $350.00

to $550.00 tabled until January. 3. Bingo machine was widely discussed with a vote to get a

new machine when the current one is broken.

Well, I have heard that two people think the newsletter is getting out to early! Is it?? One week

does not make a difference and it’s the decision of the editor when it should go to print. I have to

research, retype, edit, proof read and place the pages where I want them and when anyone brings

me information after the 20th of each month, I have to rearrange the pages to get everything in. I

then submit all of this information to Port Richey for them to print and its then delivered on

Tuesdays or Thursday’s and this week (Thursday, Nov 27th) was Thanksgiving and one street

delayed their paper a few days because they thought it was to early and all the other streets were

delivered on Tuesday and Wednesday. There are months where events are scheduled on the 1st of

the month and if the newsletter gets out late, these people never know until after the fact and

don‘t get a chance to plan ahead. Any meetings, events, happenings in the last week of the

month will go in the following newsletter. I would appreciate if there are any concerns or

�ews Flash!!!

The Hot Dog and Hamburgers Fest on Wednesday’s at the Southfork Pool Cabana have been a great

success so far this season, due to the tireless efforts of our newly formed cooking teams and of course the

appetites of our Southfork residents. If you have not yet came by to enjoy the festivities, that activity is held

every Wednesday from 4:30 until 6p.m.

If you haven’t been to the pool area lately you will also be pleasantly surprised to find that Southfork

management has refurbished the landscaping to make the pool area very attractive and atheistically

pleasing.

The Hot Dog and Hamburger Fest Committee will continue to pursue finding new, exciting and delicious

items to add to the menu along with some new ideas for entertainment that you can enjoy while dining.

We have recently been advised that after returning from a world tour and after some serious contract

negotiations that the SOUTHFORK JAMMERS will be performing poolside at the Hot Dog and

Hamburger Fest during mid January. The exact date will be posted, so please watch the bulletin board and

don’t miss out on this opportunity to see this exciting group live and in person on the Southfork Pool

Cabana Stage!

If you have not yet volunteered to be part of our team or have donated a favorite dessert for this activity

please feel free to contact Aggie Mitchell, Bob Downs, Shirlynn Collier or Jim Morvatz and one of us will

be happy to come by to pick up the donation.

Proceeds from this activity benefit the Southfork Homeowners Association, so come by and visit us on any

Wednesday and we will leave the Tiki Torches on for you.

Donations needed for the Poor

It has come to our attention that the local “DAYSTAR HOPE CENTER” located at 15512 US 301, Dade

City is in need of many household items , towels, sheets, blankets etc. They have pick up service and the

contact person lives here in Southfork. Please contact Isabel Wirth @ 523-1591 for any questions or items

to be picked up. This center on a daily basis, services anywhere from 65 to 85 people a day who are in need

of these and many other items. So to all who are selling there homes or just want to get rid of household

items please give them a call. Thank you so much! They also need food desperately!

BI�GO

Bingo is alive and well and still hopping every Wednesday night at 6:50pm. Join us for a

night of (maybe) luck and listen to all the complainers who do not win. You will hear

many “boos” to the people who win all the time and tell us they never win……..But it is

all in fun. “Please” when paying for your cards try to pay with $5.00 or $1.00 bills and do

not bring any $20.00 bills to pay for the cards because the fives and ones help to pay out

the cash prizes. Thank you!!!!

Has everyone noticed that the pool area and the front have been cleaned up and new

shrubs/flowers are being planted? It looks, oh so good!!!!

The pool looks really nice and clean with the good cleanup that was done. Congrats go to

Andy on a good job of keeping the pool so clean everyday and he makes sure it is

completed every morning before anyone gets a chance to get in it. We sure do appreciate

all that has been done.

Women’s Club

On December 3rd, 56 members of the Women’s Club had their Christmas party at the

Golden Corral. After having a good meal there was a gift exchange and it was very

enjoyable.

On December 6th, we had our annual Bazaar and it was success. We did better than last

year and we collected a total of $2017.40 and half of this money is going to Charities here

in Dade City.

I want to thank everyone in Southfork who contributed to our success, We could not have

done it without you, this was team effort. Nothing is impossible when we work together.

A special thanks to Mary Bolin who coordinated that project. Thanks for a job well done!

After that busy month we will have a relaxing meeting on January 7th. Please be there, we

need your input for the New Year. The meeting will be in the Clubhouse at 9:30am. See

Bowling

On Tuesday’s at 12:30 pm, a group of Southfork residents bowl at the “Pin Chasers” in

Zephyrhills. This is a senior league, and we bowl 7 frames and get 3 strikes. It is a couple

of hours of good exercise and fun.

Come and join us!!!!

PS We don’t mind the gutter balls and there are no “pros” amongst the group.

Woman’s Club “Charity Committee” The Charity Committee and the women of Southfork’s Woman’s Club have had a very busy and successful

year of 2008. Following are some of the people or groups who received some help from all of us:

B. Bag of small orange stuffed bears with black bows for trays at Halloween.

2. Military service men and women

A. Packages to three service men relatives of Southfork relatives.

B. Several money donations for postage to a Wesley Chapel man who sends about 200 packages a week

to service men and women.

C. “Operation Paperback” - $100.00 to purchase books “Courage After Fire” to help service people

returning home from war areas.

3. Cox Elementary School, Dade City

A. Underwear and Shorts for little children who don’t quite “make it” to the rest room and needs a

change of clothing.

B. Huge donation of school supplies, including 24 backpacks, from the women of the club.

C. Food & Misc donations for single mother of 7 children.

D. $75.00 for 5th graders field trip

E. Children’s books

4. Four Dade City Schools

A. Thanksgiving baskets, including turkeys and complete meals for 24 needy families.

None of this would have been possible without support of the committee and women of the club, Donations

received from “EveryDay Blessings”, and also profits made on yearly Southfork Bazaar. On Dec 6th the

total was $2,017 - half of which goes into the Charity committee funds. BIG THANK YOU TO ALL.

Thank you, Southfork Women’s Club

One of the many groups who help in so many areas, especially the local charities, is our

own, Women’s Club. I do not think that many people who live here in Southfork realize

how much our women do for this community. This is a follow up to the previous page.

Within this group there are so many committees and one committee who has serviced

many is our Memorial group. Whenever a resident, male or female (non-members also)

passes away we have a committee with 5 captains ready in a moments notice to purchase

and prepare food to bring to the individual’s family on the day of either the funeral or

memorial service or other day specified by the families. We do not ask for donations from

the families, but we have received monetary donations from some of them as a thank you.

Some of the other committees besides the charity and memorial is the quilters and the

yarn hookers. At the annual bazaar we have the white elephant table, the baked goods,

hotdogs and the new items and all total monies received is divided into 2 portions which

is 50% for charities and 50% for the women’s club.

We do hear of a lot of complaints from individuals who do not like everything that the

women’s group do but not everyone can be pleased or appeased. We do have a show of

hands for approval when anything new is started and the club likes to show their thanks

by giving “share‘s” at the end of each year which was also voted on. Each share is

based on many things such as for example, 25 shares for those who attend the monthly

meetings etc. Some do not like this, but again, the majority rules/votes. We also have

started a “secret pal” which has been successful these past two years and hope it

continues for the duration of the women’s group.

We are always in need of help and look for volunteers within our group. So instead of

complaining, come and join us at one of our monthly meetings and find out a little more

of who we are and what we do and of course we always look for suggestions and possible

ways of improving what we already do.

Our meetings are held on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 9:30am and the yearly dues

is $5.00 payable at the February meeting. Look forward to seeing all of you!!

Every Thursday morning (weather permitting) at 9:45a.m. Come and exercise at your own

pace. Please join our group because we work hard and have a lot of fun. “Noodles are

needed.” Good for your heart, mind and soul. Come and socialize and have some healthy

fun.

Please take heed to this advice!

JURY DUTY SCAM - Never give out personal information to callers. The caller claims

to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty,

the scammer asks you for your social security number and date of birth so they can verify

the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and

identity was just stolen. The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states and this has been

verified as accurate. The court will never make these calls and if you do have a

summons, it is delivered to your door.

CREDIT CARD SCAM - Visa-Master Card etc phone scam.

Never give your three-digit security number on the back of your card to anyone… No

matter what they say! If in doubt call your credit card company yourself and inquire about

the “concern.”

An open letter to the Southfork Residents

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to declare that I am seeking the position of

President of the Southfork Homeowners Association at the upcoming January meeting.

Marie and I have been residents of Southfork since August 2006 upon my retirement from the U.S. Postal

Service.. We live at 11050 Maverick Dr with our dachshund, “Schatzie.” Although I am relatively new

here, I believe that my credentials (see below) and the fact that we are full-time residents, will serve the

Dear friends and neighbors of Southfork, I would like to take this

opportunity to assure you that after a year of not serving on the board, I am

ready to be back in full force.

For those who do not know me, I have accepted the nomination for

President of the Association. I would like to let you know that I have served

a total of five (5) years on the Association Board. I was secretary for three

(3) years and president for two (2) years. I feel and it is stated in the by-

laws that a candidate for president of the Association should be one with at

least one (1) year experience on the board and with a genuine desire to fill

that office. Being that I have the experience, I feel that I am a good

candidate for this office and I have a genuine desire to serve the members of

our great community!

After accepting the nomination, Aggie Mitchell agreed to be coordinator of

activities. Together, we have been taking a fresh look at the needs of the

members of our community. We had already been working towards helping

the single residents feel welcome and become more involved after realizing

that there are over 80 single residences in our community of 240 homes.

Our plans for activities range from entertainers, opportunities for groups to

go out to lunch, movies, dinner shows, sports events and bus tours. Aggie is

going to be working with the activities people in Blue Jay for activities that

we can do jointly, such as bus tours and their dances.

It has come to my attention that there is concern about the summer

activities. Plans will be made and we already have volunteers who are

willing to serve on committees to assure that there will be summer activities

for all to enjoy.

Southfork Annual Association Meeting

What: Our annual homeowner’s meeting is a chance to meet new neighbors, catch up

with old friends and discuss local issues. This meeting has been designated by our by-

laws to be the first meeting of the fiscal year with the election of new officer’s and

directors. Please plan to attend and learn what’s happening in Southfork!

Where: Southfork Clubhouse, January 26th, 2009 at 9A.M. sharp!

Why: It’s your neighborhood, too! With our combined efforts, we can continue to

make our community a better social environment with better communication to

everyone. We need everyone’s support to help and vote on issues that everyone is happy

with! It is next to impossible to please everyone but there are ways to try and appease

most of the people. If there is anyone who is interested in being an officer or run as a

director your name must be handwritten on the already printed ballot because

nominations were closed at the November membership meeting!

Who: You, the homeowners, must have your yearly dues paid by January 15th in order to

vote for any new officer/director’s. The annual yearly dues is $15.00 per household and

only one (1) member of each household is eligible to vote. Submit payment to treasurer

(Richard Brown) @ 567-7451.

How: No need to RSVP, just show up!

Reason: We need more then one candidate for each office to run. If there is only 1

person for each office with no competition, elections will be held and the slate is

automatically given to the only ones listed for each office. So, if you want “change” this

is the time to do it!!! Please, come and submit your name or your ideas.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 24TH, 2009 AT 11AM. There will be

cash prizes and the sign up sheet is on the bulletin board. Deadline

for signing up is January 14th, 2009. Entry fee is $5.00 per person

plus a deck of new playing cards.

Please check bulletin board at the Clubhouse for any volunteers,

and donation of food items needed.

and hopefully it can be held each year.
