description

When Winchester Public Schools' elementary library staff was increased from one library media specialist (LMS) -- or librarian -- to three in 2008, a committee was formed to plan the library media program as it would grow to have full-time professional staff in all 5 elementary schools. This presentation summarized the goals and status of the planning effort.

The mission of the Winchester Public Schools library media program is to provide resources and services for our school community that promote life-long reading and the development of research skills for pleasure and for information in an inviting and dynamic environment. The Library Media Specialist collaborates with the learning community of students, teachers, administrators, support staff, and families to provide physical and intellectual access to high quality materials in all formats in order to foster information literacy and support the Massachusetts State Curriculum Frameworks. As the information center of the school, the library media center reflects principles of diversity and intellectual freedom and connects to the wider learning community beyond its walls.

Articulates why the school library exists; the needs it exists to address and the principles that guide its work....” ---MBLC

“Articulates...how the library media program will be different in 5 years as a result of implementing this plan...” --MBLC

We envision:

--- a library media center ("LMC") in each elementary, middle, and high school equipped with up-to-date technology and materials, in a variety of print and non-print formats, supporting all curriculum subject areas.

--- full-time professional staff in each elementary, middle, and high school managing the LMC and actively collaborating with teachers to design and co-teach projects that foster information literacy and technology skills while addressing curriculum topics.

--- every LMC providing equal access for all members of its school community and resources for its diverse population.

(continues next slide...)

Page 10: 2008 Presentation to Winchester School Committee on Library Media Program Plan

--- students in the LMC engrossed in reading and resource-based learning, evaluating and ethically using information from a variety of print and digital sources, and writing or producing projects that synthesize and communicate the results of their research.

--- that through the challenging and positive learning experiences they have in the LMC, students will develop a life-long love of reading and motivation to seek out information they need to realize personal goals.

--- a library media program that helps students learn to read, read to learn, and ultimately learn to learn.
