The College offers the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Sciencedegrees, preparing students for direct entry into the world of business or

for further professional training in law, medi-cine, business, government, teaching, or the ministry. Basic to the success of its program is a dedicated faculty, over 90% of whom holdearneddoctoratesintheirfieldsandallof whom devote their principal energy to teaching. The student-faculty ratio is 13:1.

STUDENTSRUNTHEIROWNACTIVITIESStudent life is considered an integral part of the education process at Hampden-Sydney. Students conduct their own affairs through a student government elected by them and composed of members of all classes.A student-enforced honor code is a Hampden-Sydney tradition that continues to flourish, upholding the atmosphere of personal integ-rity, trust, and mutual respect essential to the operation of a dynamic academic community. Responsibility for maintaining the system is taken so seriously that students enjoy one of the freest campuses in America, where books and bikes can be left unattended and profes-sors can leave their classrooms during tests and exams. Student activities are numerous and

diverse, including publication of a newspaper, yearbook, and literary magazine, and operation of a radio station andvolunteerfiredepartmentalong with a wide variety of clubs and other organiza-tions. Whether they like drama, music, classical debate, hiking, and canoeing, or even electronics and short waveradio, studentscanfindcampus organizations that cater to their interests. Many student programs involve a strong commitment of ser-vice to the community, such as the tutoring program for area high school students.

The social life of the College is centered around 11 national fra-ternities and a strong organization of independents. Concerts, mixers, movies, and a variety of unusual programs are planned and carried out through a student-run college activities committee.

Hampden-Sydney is one of the South’s outstanding liberal arts col-leges. Nestled in the gently rolling countryside of south-central Vir-ginia, H-SC is the oldest of the country’s few remaining men’s colleges. Hampden-Sydney is committed to the belief that a liberal arts education provides the best foundation not only for a profes-sional career, but also for the great moral and intellectual challenges of life. Students learn that the pursuit of truth is a lifelong endeavor, requiring clarity and objectivity of thought, a sensitive moral conscience, and a dedication to responsible citizenship. As the College’s mission statement says, liberal education aims to assist stu-dents to free themselves from ignorance, malice, prejudice, and superstition; from thetyrannyofintellectualselfishness;andfrom impotence in judging the claims and values of experts. It teaches students to gather evidence patiently; it educates them to write and speak with force, precision, and clarity; and it encourages them to seek refreshmentandinspirationinthefinearts.

ONE QUALITY REIGNS SUPREME:LEADERSHIPFrom the beginning, the College’s intent has been to educate the whole individual “in an atmosphere of sound learning.” The College’s history speaks eloquently of the power-ful and enduring character of the ideals of self-reli-ance and service, and of its own two-hundred years of commitment to the value of self-reliant, disciplined intellect in public life. In proportion to its enrollment, Hampden-Sydney consistently is in the topfive percent of allcolleges and universities in graduates listed in “Who’s Who in America.” Since 1776, the Col-lege has provided the educationalexperiencenecessarytoproduceleadersineveryfieldofendeavor, including one U.S. President, 12 senators, 32 congressmen, 12 governors, well over 100 state representatives, and a host of minis-ters, attorneys, doctors and judges.

New Look Tigers Set to Challenge for ODAC Supremacy

The 2008 Lacrosse Tigers understand that they will again have to overcome tremendous challenges to achieve their goal of capturing theODACChampionship, whichwouldbethefifthODACcrownandninth NCAA tournament appearance in program history. In 2007, Ti-gersfinishedtheregularODACseasontiedforfirstplacewitha5-1record, along with rival Roanoke College. Unfortunately, the team ex-perienced a two-game split with Lynchburg College, when they were upendedbytheHornetsintheODACsemifinals.

After the graduation of eight seniors, the Tigers will return a team of 34 veterans and 11 seniors in 2008. The Tigers were hit hard by the graduationoftheirtopfourscorers,includingAll-Americanmidfield-ers Ryan Harrington and Thomas Jennings. Yet the coaches believe that the team offense will be energized by a deep and talented combination of very athletic and hard-working veterans and freshmen.

ATTACKAfter the graduation of two senior All-ODAC at-tackmen, William Shell and Michael Via, competi-tion for a spot on theTiger attackwill be fierce. The Tigers will field a young and hard-workinggroup of attackmen in 2008. Senior Joe Daugherty, the team’s leading returning scorer with ten goals andsevenassistsasamidfielder,willaddexperi-ence and strong shooting ability to the attack and midfield.JuniorAndrewMahoney, astrongdodger, returns after starting for the Tigers in 2007, scor-ing eight goals and tallying four assists. 6-foot-5 junior Kenny Mathison tallied nine goals and two assists a season ago and will provide a goal scoring presence on the crease. Two other juniors, Harrison McCorkle and Teddy Schwab, have worked hard in the weight room and are ready to compete. Three sophomores, Ben Allison, Kevin Coats, and Hunter Phillips, all have the ability to score and will com-pete for a role after gaining experience as freshmen. The coaches are also excited about the quickness and savvy of four newcomers, Aaron Gillman, Ryan Grodzki, Lance Landvater and Craig Philp. Landvater, a 2006 and 2007 high school All-Ameri-can, has been impressive in fall workouts and will have an immediate impact.

MIDFIELDThe2008Tigermidfieldwillbeexcitingwithawealthofspeedandath-leticism. Mark Miller returns for his senior campaign after playing with an injury in 2007, registering three goals and four assists. Junior mid-fielderDougCarpenterwillusehisspeedandsavvytostepuphisgameand increase his scoring output. Coach Rostan is very excited about the highlyathleticgroupofsophomoresandfreshmanmidfieldersin2008.Sophomores Thomas Hovis and Andrew O’Shea each had tremendous freshmen seasons and gained a wealth of experience playing on the

Strong defensive unit returns to bolster another talented H-SC roster in 2008first-secondmidfieldlines,learningfrom2007All-AmericansRyanHarrington and Thomas Jennings. Sophomores Whit Kelley and Kyle Jett also contributed as freshman in 2007; both will look to take their offensive games to another level. Kelley made a major impact in his freshman season as the team’s face-off specialist (.553), and was a physical force between the lines, while Jett has great speed, and has worked hard to improve his offensive game. Three sophomores, Ben Archambault, Peter Squire, and Mario Washington have improved themselves physically and will compete for their roles. A group of seven athletic and exciting freshmen including Stephen Dewey, Cole Hawthorne, Dudley Locke, Jake McDonald, Jeff McMillen, Bill Tun-neyandNickWestcanallrunthefieldandwillimmediatelycompetefor offensive roles as well.

At the all-important defensive short-stick posi-tion, the Tigers return senior Kyle Frazier. A highly conditioned athlete at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, Frazier has been a physical force in his first three seasons. Another senior, RobbieThomas, is one of the fastest athletes in Divi-sion III and is ready to increase his role in 2008. Freshman Jake McDonald plays with great speed and strength, and should see immediate action at defensive midfield. Speedsters, sophomore Ja-mie Dunn and freshmen Jeff McMillen and Nick West, willalsocompeteatdefensivemidfield.

At the face-off “X” sophomores Whit Kelley and Thomas Hovis return. Kelley won 78 of 141 face-offs in his freshman season, and will again take the majority of the draws this spring. Senior long pole Colin Dunn and freshman Bill Tunney will also do work at the face-off “X”.

DEFENSEThe 2008 Tiger defense will be deep, experi-enced, and talented. In 2007, the Tigers held its opponents to an impressive 6.51 goals-per-game, a mark that was sixth among nationally ranked teams in Division III. The Tigers have graduated only one defenseman in two years, with none graduating in 2007. Third team All-American and

Two highly touted freshmen, Peter Foley and high school All-American Tim Vanbenthuysen have been impressive in fall workouts andwillhaveanimmediateimpactonthefield.

GOALKEEPERSAlthough the Tigers graduated All-ODAC goalie Scott Russell in 2007, the coaches are very excited about their potential in the goal in 2008. Senior Phil Hage has worked hard for three years and is ready to lead the Tiger defense in 2008. Hage played in eight games as a junior, posting a 7.48 goals-against-average. Two freshmen, Ben Hansell and Ben Steele will also compete in the goal. Hansell has shown great quickness and stopping ability, while Steele has great size in the cage.

Dur-ing the mid-week, the Tigers will travel to Guilford College for an April 9 contest. Over the next ten days, the Tigers will battle with Roanoke College at home (April 12), then travel to Lexington to take on Wash-ington and Lee (April 19), and will conclude the grueling stretch with another home showdown with Lynchburg College on April 23.

The winner of the ODAC Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Division III Championship game will be held at Foxboro Stadium in Massachusetts on Memorial Day Week-end as part of the combined, NCAA Division I, II, and III National Championship weekend.

The Tiger defense, one of the best in the country in 2007, will once again be tenacious, as All-ODAC performer Ian York (left) and honorable mention All-America and All-ODAC Alex Pritzlaff (center) aim to improve upon last season’s success. On the offensive end, junior Andrew Mahoney (right) is the lone returning starter at attack, and will be counted on to increase his production of eight goals and four assists from a season ago.

2007 Recap: Tigers Return to Excellence, Fall Just Shy of NCAAsHeading into his 23rd season at Hampden-Sydney, Head Coach Ray Rostan knew that his Lacrosse Tigers were primed for a serious run at his sixth ODAC Championship and ninth NCAA appearance. The graduation of All-American attackman and team leader Vince Smith wouldbedifficulttofill, buttheTigerswerenotshortonavailablereplacements: a strong lineup, consisting of several All-America candidates and plenty of young talent. The team was determined to improve on the less than par 8-5 mark from the previous season.

Hampden-Sydney started the year off by defeating Mary Washing-ton 13-6 in front of a home crowd at the new Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Field. Itwas theTigers’first contest on the new, state-of-the-art,fieldturffacility.

The Tigers raced out to a 10-1 start behind the strong offensive efforts of senior All-Americans Ryan Har-rington (Dallas, TX/Plano) and Thomas Jennings (Murfreesboro, TN/Webb School), the stingy defense (6.5 goals against average) of four juniors - All-Americanandthree-timefirstteamAll-ODAClong-pole Colin Dunn (Chevy Chase, MD/Trinity Pawling) and close-defenseman Will Ashwell, Alex Pritzlaff ((Castle Rock, CO/Kent Denver) and Ian York (Char-lottesville,VA/St.Anne’s-Belfield) - and the stronggoaltending of senior Scott Russell. The Tigers won their contests by an average of eight goals-per-game with their lone defeat coming in overtime - a 7-6 loss on the road at the hands of Cabrini (a team that also defeatedWashingtonandLeeandnationalfinalists,Cortland State). The stage was set for a critical con-test against defending ODAC Champion Roanoke.

InSalem,the13th-rankedTigersfoughtbackfromanearly6-1defi-cit to take a 7-6 lead early in the third period. The Maroons were abletoretakeandextendtheleadbyfivewithfourminutesremain-ing in the game. Three Tiger goals in the next three minutes would threaten the Roanoke lead, but the Maroons were able to close with a13-11win,snappingtheTigersfivegamewinningstreak.

One week later Hampden-Sydney hosted #17 Washington and Lee and would answer the call with a strong conference win. Riding asixgoalperformancefrommidfieldersHarringtonandJennings, and stellar play between the pipes by senior net-minder Russell (Darien, CT/Darien), the Tigers pulled out a 6-5 victory in front of a crowd of nearly 1,500 at Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Field. Russell recorded nine saves and Hampden-Sydney team defense held the Generals scorelessinthefinalquartertoensurethewin.

With “no rest for the weary” in the ODAC, the Tigers traveled to #7 Lynchburg College for a Saturday night contest. The Tigers came backfromatwo-goalhalftimedeficitandled10-7withminutestoplay. When the dust settled, the Tigers scored a 10-9 victory over

the Hornets. With outstanding shooting, Harrington and fellow senior William Shell (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s) scored three goals apiece, and Russell produced another strong effort with 17 saves, as Hampden-Sydney improved to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the ODAC.

The Tigers earned eight All-ODAC selections at season’s end, while four earned USILA All-Ameri-can honors. Named to theAll-ODAC first teamwere Harrington, Dunn and Pritzlaff. Harrington led the team with 34 goals while also dishing out nine assists. His efforts would warrant second team USILAAll-Americahonors,firstteamVaSIDAll-State recognition, and an invitation to play in the 2007 North-South Classic. Harrington was also invited to play in the 2007 Warrior Major League Senior Challenge. Following the Senior Chal-lenge, Harrington was drafted by the New Jersey Pride of the MLL.
