otterbein ProFileThe CollegeFounded in 847, Otterbein is an indepen-dent, co-educational four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

LocationWesterville, Ohio, is a sub-urb of Columbus, the state capital.

Majors and DegreesCourses of study are of-fered in 56 majors and 4 minors. Degrees offered include the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Music Edu-cation, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre, Bachelor of Science in Education and Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Arts in Education, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Science in Nursing and Master of Business Admin-istration. The CampusOtterbein’s 40 acrecampus includes 50 buildings. Edwin L. and Mary Louise Roush Hall was dedicated June, 993. Roush Hall is the first gen-eral purpose academic fa-cility built on the Otterbein campus since historic Tow-ers Hall was constructed in 87. The college recently completed interior renova-tion of Towers Hall that in-cluded a complete overhaul of classrooms, work spaces and corridors. Changes designed to recapture the essence of the time period in which Towers was built are evident throughout the facility. Physical changes to make Towers Hall more

accessible, new wiring and a modern heating, along with a ventilation and air conditioning system were included. Updated lighting, flooring, paint, re-stored trim and archways, network cabling and acous-tic ceilings prepares the building for the classes of the new millennium. Tow-ers Hall houses Mathemat-ics, English, Foreign Lan-guage, History and Political Science, and Religion and Philosophy departments. Other offices in Towers include the student news-paper, Continuing Studies, the Registrar's office and the Office of Grants and Special Projects. The Tow-ers Hall renovation was completed in April, 999. Other facilities on campus include Courtright Memo-rial Library which houses more than 50,000 volumes and ,000 periodicals as well as an outstanding modern learning resource center with access to Ohio LINK and television studio. Schear-McFadden Science Hall has modern labo-ratories and classrooms as well as the Weitkamp Planetarium/Observatory. Cowan Hall houses theatre and speech facilities, in-cluding an expanded scene shop and WOBN-FM, the campus radio station. The Battelle Fine Arts Center is the home for programs in music, art and dance. The new Clements Recreation Center houses men’s and women’s athletic and physi-cal education facilities and offices.

StudentsApproximately 3,00 men and women from through-

out Ohio, surrounding states and several foreign countries attend Otterbein, including more than 900 adult students in day, eve-ning and weekend classes.

FacultyOtterbein’s student-faculty ratio of -to-one offers students the opportunity to receive personalized atten-tion from their instructors. A majority of full-time faculty hold doctorates or appropriate terminal degrees. Professors are ac-tive in campus affairs, serve as advisers to students, and participate in a unique sab-batical program to research and study recent develop-ments in their fields.

AthleticsMen and women com-pete in the Ohio Athletic Conference, NCAA Divi-sion III. There are eight varsity sports for men and women. A complete intra-mural program is available to all students.

Fraternities and SororitiesNearly 50 percent of Otterbein students par-ticipate in the six local sororities and six local fraternities.

The ArtsProfessional training programs are available in music, theatre, dance, and visual arts. There are numerous cultural events free to students, including music department events (orchestra, opera, band, choir concerts), visual arts exhibits of student and professional works, and the widely-recognized Otterbein College Theatre,

with winter and summer seasons.

Off-Campus ProgramsA variety of off-campus programs are available, including foreign language study in Dijon, France and Segovia, Spain. Semester at Sea, a shipboard-campus program offered in coop-eration with the Univer-sity of Pittsburgh, enables students to take a variety of liberal arts courses while on cruise. Study oppor-tunities also exist with the Washington Semester Plan, operated through the American University in Washington, D.C., the Phil-adelphia Center program in the Philadelphia area and Roehampton Institute in England. Army and Air Force ROTC is offered in conjunction with The Ohio State University. Internships provide experi-ence in a student’s chosen career field.

in the 05-year history of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), brings those winning traits to his additional position of Athletics Director.

Reynolds, who took over the reigns of the men’s athletics department in 99, was also placed in charge of women’s athletics in 998 after Otterbein combined both men’s and women’s athletics into one department.

A ten-time OAC Coach of the Year selection and two-time Ohio College Coach of the Year, Reynolds has taken his cagers to at least a share of the regular-season conference title times and into the NCAA Division III Tournament 3 times. Following graduation from Otterbein in 965, where he was a -time letterman in football, basketball and track, Reynolds returned to his home town of London, Ohio, and taught seventh-grade science while serving as an assistant coach in football, basketball and track at the high school. He served three years in the U.S. Air Force (966-69) as a personnel services officer in charge of recreation.

He spent three seasons as an assistant under Otterbein head men’s basketball coach Curt Tong while teaching in the Co-lumbus and Westerville, Ohio school districts from 969 to 97. He became head coach in 97.

Joe Loth begins his sixth season as head football coach at Otterbein College.

Loth, a 99 Otterbein graduate, served as head football coach at Kean University, Union, N.J., for three seasons before com-ing to Otterbein in 003.

The Painesville, Ohio, native has taken part in rebuilding programs

throughout his 6-year coaching career. At Kean, Loth in-herited a program riding a 6-game losing streak. In Loth’s final season, Kean posted its best record in eight years.

In 005, Loth guided the Cardinals to their first winning season since 999 and only their second since 98. The Cardinals finished the year at 7-3 overall, and 6-3 in the OAC. Included in the win column—a 7-4 decision over cross-town rival Capital—who made the NCAA Division III playoffs. Loth was selected “OAC Football Coach of the Year” by his peers. “To me, the award is a team accomplishment for the Otterbein football program,” Loth said after receiving the coach of the year award. “Our players, my assistant coaches and the support staff here at Otterbein are as responsible as myself in earning this award.

At Otterbein, the 4-year-old coach has assembled a coaching staff that, including himself, features three former Cardinals.

“If you look at the great NCAA Division III programs and the staffs they have, most of their coaches have gone through their program,” Loth said. “I think that’s impor-tant.”

Loth and his staff have employed a four-step approach in raising the success of Otterbein football.

“The first step is to recruit,” Loth said. “We want to recruit as well as anyone in the OAC. The second is retain our student-athletes. It is not always how many student-ath-letes you bring to campus, it is how many student-athletes you have retained. Thirdly, we look to develop our players mentally and physically, and create a great feeling of team.

“Finally, Loth said, “we try to organize our program and prepare our players to ensure we accomplish our goals of recruiting, retaining and developing our players.”

Loth began his football career as a graduate assistant at Southern Methodist University (99-93). He served as defensive coordinator at NCAA Division III schools West-ern Connecticut State University (993-97) and Capital University (997-98). Loth spent two seasons as defensive secondary coach at the University of Rhode Island (998-00) before accepting his first head coaching job at Kean in February 000.

Loth was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at defensive back as an undergraduate at Otterbein. He earned second team All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors his senior year in 990 and still holds the Otterbein career record of 3 interceptions. He received his bachelor’s de-gree in business.

In 006, Loth was inducted into his high school’s Hall of Fame at Riverside High School in Painesville, Ohio. Coach Loth and his wife, Keri, have two sons, Zachary, 8, and Tyler, 6.

Built in 194, the Rike Center houses physical education facilities and offices. The domed roof encloses an intercollegiate hardwood basketball floor with seating for 3,100; a tenth-mile oval track with an 8-yard straightaway and seating for 600; nets and space to segment three courts each for volleyball, basketball or tennis; equipped weight training room; two handball courts; gymnastics space; and locker rooms for varsity teams and physical education classes. Additionally, nets serve to section off a baseball infield and batting cages. Conventional classrooms and offices are located on the perimeter. A $300,000 gift from the Rike family of Dayton inaugu-rated the capital campaign to finance construction of the Rike Center, which was built for about $1.5 million.

Additional sports facilities include tennis courts, and separate fields for softball, baseball and soccer. A 2.5-mile cross country course, which meanders Alum Creek and traverses woods and farmland, opened in the fall of 1995. Gifts from the Otterbein alumni and friends have helped provide educational opportunities through athletics for sports-minded students. Former student-athletes have continued their success in coaching, teaching, recreational and professional fields-evidence of quality educational ex-periences offered at Otterbein College.

FaciLities

The Frank and Vida Clements Recreation and Fitness Center opened in the fall of 2002. The $9.5 million center enhances the curriculum and clinical experiences for students preparing for careers in health, fitness and athletic training. In addition, the center significantly increases the facilities for the athletic training, sport management, and health and fitness programs; increases the health, wellness and recreation programs for students, faculty and staff; enhances Otterbein’s capacity to attract future students; and expands the opportuni-ties for partnership with the wider Columbus community. The center has two components: a 5,000 square-foot field house, complete with a sanctioned six-lane, 200-meter indoor track; and a two-story connector to the existing Rike Center, which features a high-tech cardiovascular fitness area, fully-equipped training and rehabilitation center, coach-ing offices, classrooms and a student lounge area.

A new era in Otterbein football began in the fall of 2005 as the Cardinals moved into a new home in Memorial Sta-dium. “This completes the multi-year upgrade of our sports and recreational facilities,” said Otterbein President Brent DeVore. The new $3.2 million grandstand, built on the same site of old Memorial Stadium, was dedicated on Sept. 1, 2006 shortly before Otterbein defeated cross-town rival Capital, 1-14, by scoring twice on its last two possessions of the game. The new grandstand was financed through private funds, raised through the Clements Foundation and the Otterbein “O” Club, both long-time contributors to athletics and other academic programs at Otterbein. The new grandstand, with handicap access, seats 2,400, including a reserved section in the middle with 500 stadium chairs, and a press box with elevator. The stadium also fea-tures state-of-the-art locker rooms, a training room, equip-ment room, and “O” Club room. Other recent improvements to Memorial Stadium include a new lighting system, courtesy of Cellular One, in 1996, and renovation of the outdoor track and field facilities in 1988 through a donation from the late Dorothy McVay, from

Westerville. In 1989, the gridiron was named in honor of Dwight “Smokey” Ballenger, a 1939 graduate of Otterbein. Over the last four years, Otterbein has added the Cle-ments Recreational and Fitness Center, a new softball field, and new tennis courts; and an upgrade of the baseball field. “With the addition of the new stadium, we have one of the best athletics complexes in the conference,” said Bob Gatti, Otterbein Vice President for Student Affairs.

The 2007-08 year proved, once again, why the OAC is one of the most prestigious Division III conferences in the country. The Mount Union football team advanced to their 11th Stagg Bowl, while Capital advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the third consecutive time. The Ohio Northern volleyball team team made its eighth straight NCAA III Tournament appearance and the program recorded its NCAA-record 31st straight win-ning season. The Heidelberg volleyball team reached the NCAA Regional Semifinals following an appearance in the OAC Tournament Finals. The Muskingum softball team advanced to the Division III World Series for the eighth time. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced the induction of Muskingum Head Coach Donna Newberry into the NFCA Hall of Fame in December 2008. Newberry is the all-time winningest softball coach in NCAA Division III. Heidelberg wrestling sent five to the NCAA Division III National Tournament and placed two. Ohio Northern Head Coach Ron Beaschler was inducted into the National Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The Otterbein women’s golf team placed fifth at the NCAA Tourna-ment, while the Mount Union men placed 12th. Individually, the Confer-ence was represented by 64 All-Americans and two national titles in track and field. Mount Union’s Dan Gund won the outdoor shot put title and Heidelberg’s Judy Bataille claimed the indoor 55-meter dash title. Academically, the OAC boasted numerous CoSIDA ESPN the Maga-zine Academic All-Americans, along with regional and national coaching honors. ciation (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself and has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently the Conference con-sists of 10 members, including Baldwin-Wallace College, Capital Uni-versity, Heidelberg College, John Carroll University, Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum College, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein College and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school, on July 1, 2000. In the OAC's first year of existence, 1902, the first Conference cham-pion was crowned Case Tech won the football title with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor track was added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became a Conference sport in 1914. More sports were steadily added to the OAC's repertoire throughout the years, culminating in the addition of women's sports in 1984. The Conference currently sponsors champion-ships in 21 sports, 11 men's and 10 women's. The enrollments at the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio Athletic Conference athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the educational programs.
