i i | US DREAM ACADEMY | 2008 ANNUAL REPORT

From where Emiliano Richards sat—behind

bars at California’s isolated Pelican Bay

State Prison—he searched for a way to

make a difference with his new inheritance.

A GIFT TO REMEMBER

Then on his radio with a handmade antenna he heard Wintley Phipps talk about his vision for the

U.S. Dream Academy and keeping kids out of prison. Emiliano immediately knew what to do. With

$10,000, he became the Dream Academy’s fi rst major donor in 1999.

“For someone to believe in us that much, before we had even opened our fi rst Learning Center, was an

amazing feeling,” says Executive Director Diane Wallace Booker. “But it made perfect sense when we

realized how profoundly our mission had touched Emiliano, how much he wanted to keep even one

child from following his path.”

Over the years, Diane wondered what became of this young man. She found Emiliano through

the Internet.

At the 2008 Power of a Dream Gala,

Emiliano told the audience about being

released from prison on September 9, 2001

and relying on his faith to guide him through the national upheaval of 9/11 and on to new callings as

a pastor, a father, and a public speaker who helps young people stay focused on positive futures.

“I am thankful for the U.S. Dream Academy and what they are doing,” he told the audience.

Wintley Phipps was moved by Emiliano’s remarks, “To see how much his life has changed and be able

to thank him publicly for his early support was uplifting for the whole Dream Academy family.

One person can change so many other lives.”

US DREAM ACADEMY | 2008 ANNUAL REPORT | 1

In 2008, we found special ways to celebrate

the U.S. Dream Academy’s fi rst decade.

WE RECONNECTED with our fi rst

major donor, who began actively helping young

people stay out of prison by making a gift while

he was incarcerated.

WE WITNESSEDone of our fi rst

students, now a high school senior, tell a crowd

of 500 her success story and her hopes of attend-

ing an Ivy League university.

WE HONORED our founding board

members and founding executive director

along with long-time, committed staff members,

who helped us lay the foundation for today’s

achievements.

Even as we looked back on our fi rst 10 years,

we saw that our world and our country face an

uncertain future. Economic upheaval, failing

institutions, and rising unemployment are taking

their toll. Too many families fi nd themselves with-

out a safety net. Our Dream Academy Learning

Centers have responded by trying to ensure food,

clothing, and basic necessities for our DreamKids’

families. After all, we are not just a mentoring

and afterschool program; we are also neighbors

who care.

Moreover, our committed donors have allowed

us to maintain our Dream Academy staff and

strengthen our programs. For this support, all of

us feel incredibly blessed.

In 2008, we joined the world in witnessing the

election of the fi rst African American President of

the United States. This historic moment infused

Learning Center communities with energy and

excitement. Our staff found new ways to engage

students in lessons about politics, history, and

good citizenship.

Of course, these civics lessons were also lessons

about dreams. As a result, our DreamKids today

understand more acutely that destiny is not cho-

sen for them, that they choose their destinies each

and every day.

We at the Dream Academy feel optimistic as well.

We look across this great country and, while we

see valleys to cross and mountains to climb, we

see greater human potential. Our work brings us

to America’s most impoverished communities,

but there is rekindled spirit and fresh hope in the

faces of those we meet. We fi nd a shared deter-

mination, an appreciation of opportunities that

emerge from hard work.

The generosity of you, our donors and support-

ers, helps us contribute to a new reality. You are

the Dream Academy’s partners as much as we

are your partners. Together, we can lift up the

next generation. Most important, we can start

with young people whose chances of success

once seemed very slim. Your belief in the Dream

Academy—and in them—fuels their hope.

Thank you for joining us in this life-changing

work. Thank you for daring to dream.

DEAR FRIENDS,

2 | US DREAM ACADEMY | 2008 ANNUAL REPORT

THE U.S. DREAM ACADEMY IS ALL ABOUT

BIG DREAMS. IF WE ASK CHILDREN AND

YOUNG PEOPLE TO REACH HIGH, WE CAN

DO NO LESS FOR THEM.

For 10 years now, our work has translated our

own dream of young people with better futures

into an effective, research-based program. Al-

ready, thousands of young lives have a better

chance for strong futures. Last year alone, our

dedicated staff and volunteer mentors reached

more than 1,000 at-risk youth.

2008 at a Glance

Growing the DreamTwo expansions in 2008 demonstrated the continu-ing roles of committed communities and effective partnerships in our success.

• First, the Indianapolis “Dream Team” Steer-ing Committee, led by the Governor’s Offi ce of Faith-Based and Community Services and USA Funds, was instrumental in bringing the Dream Academy to our tenth city. The Indy Dream Team met monthly for a year to raise funds and plan for a Learning Center at the John Marshall Community School. Dr. Eugene White, Superin-tendent of Indianapolis Public Schools, hand-picked this location, based on pressing student and community needs.

• In Memphis, our multi-site mentoring work with children of incarcerated parents was consolidated into a single site program at Alcy Elementary School, located in a neighborhood facing many challenges. This offered us the opportunity to implement our full afterschool program model. We soon enrolled 60 new students and retained a number of mentors, as some switched their schedules to come to Alcy to work with their DreamKids.

A World of Difference

“When I fi rst joined the Dream

Academy, I didn’t really have

leadership skills,” says Derrell.

“I was kind of shy and always had

an attitude problem.”

That was before Derrell was

matched with his mentor, Nathan.

Despite the rigors of being a medical

student at Johns Hopkins University,

Nathan carefully set aside time each

week to meet with Derrell, listen, and

share advice.

Derrell continued with the Dream

Academy through the eighth grade.

Now an 11th grader at Dunbar High

School, Derrell stays in touch with the

Dream Academy staff at Collington

and also with Nathan.

“The Dream Academy gave me

someone to talk to about situations I

used to have…about my father being

locked up ever since I was young,” he

says. “Talking with Nathan and seeing

how he was going to medical school

made me think I could do that, too.”

Derrell’s dream? To go to medical

school and become a forensic

pathologist.

Ramping Up to Reach MoreAs new opportunities present themselves, the Dream Academy continues to ramp up capabilities, enhance program models, and steward resources as carefully as ever.

In 2008, we partnered with three national experts:

• Foundations, Inc.’s Center for Afterschool Education, to strengthen our afterschool programming with supports that include a Quality Assurance System, professional development model, and Program Guide.

• The Bridgespan Group, to enter Phase II of our planning to sup-port strategic growth and sustainability over the next four years.

• NPower, to develop and roll out a new database to track student demographics, mentor matches, and student outcomes.

“By giving them hope for their futures, we are helping our kids to dream big. Of all the boards and initiatives I am involved with, the Dream Academy makes, perhaps, the greatest difference of all.” —Pat Roe, Special Assistant to the President, USA Funds &

Member, Indianapolis Dream Team Steering Committee

Visionary PhilanthropyEvery donor at every level helps make this work possible so we can, in turn, support young dreamers. And our donors often dream big.

After two years of working with us, The Atlantic Philanthropies affi rmed its confi dence in the Dream Academy with a two-year, $2-million grant to build the Dream Academy’s capacity, provide “core support for growth,” and build high quality, replicable pro-grams that are rigorously evaluated.

Among individual supporters, long-time benefactor Oprah Win-frey surprised us at the seventh Annual Power of a Dream Gala by making a three-year gift of $3.7 million. In 2008, $500,000 of this support was earmarked as a matching challenge to our donors. In the months since, all new donors have seen their gifts double in size through this support.

These two lead gifts from 2008 were visionary, helping us build capacity for entry into new communities, gain visibility, and fi nd new advocates and supporters.

Derrell fi rst encountered the U.S. Dream

Academy when he was a third grader at

Baltimore’s Collington Square Elementary

School. Years later, the Dream Academy

still shapes his life and perspective.

The U. S. Dream Academy signifi cantly expanded its revenues during

2008. This was due to two generous supporters. Oprah Winfrey pledged

an unrestricted gift of $3.7 million. The gift, which will be paid over three

years, allows our organization to maintain its current level of programming

during these diffi cult economic times. In addition, we received support

from The Atlantic Philanthropies Foundation. Their grant of $2 million

will allow us, over the next two years, to expand the capacity of our

organization and the number of students we serve.
