This year’s SME Show was “A Really Big Show” as Dianna Gury, exhibit sales and operations with SME put it. This was the largest SME show since 2001, with ap-proximately 4,600 attendees, and 504 booth displays in the exhibit hall. Exhibitors took extra steps to ensure a noticable booth with the use of audio visuals to demonstrate products in use. Additional equipment and scale models were displayed as well. A show this size means much more walking to visit with our industry friends around the hall. Everyone was so busy it took a few trips to get in a visit.

We had a chance to meet Brookville’s newest team member, Erin McKillip. CPM ran a feature story in June 2006 on Harry Reitz. He is pleasanlty surprised that he is still receiving calls months after publication. Harry is one great guy and very well respected in his field, and is always smiling!

Steve Lipe is now sales director for Koehler Lighting Products. We’ll be run-ning a story on Koehler during the Blue-field show issues. Though everyone knows Koehler’s Wheat Caplamps, most may not know how the name originated. The company was founded by a German immigrant named Ernest Koehler in 1912

who manufactured the first naphtha-burning safety lamp. Within a few years, Koehler teamed up with inventor Grant Wheat and together they designed one of the first electric-powered rechargeable lights for underground mining. Hence the name – Koehler Wheat CapLamp.

Steve Lipe and his wife Joni travel toAfrica and have become friends withPeter and Margo who created Tangan-yika Safari Outfitters. They are commit-ted to helping preserve the wildlife along with local communities. Their passion to rescue orphaned baby animals whose parents have been killed by poachers is to be commended. Their lives remind me of a quote I recently read in Ben Stein’s column, “I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters.” Peter and Margo live this daily. If you’re ever traveling to Africa, they can help you plan the perfect safari. Log onto www.tanzania-safari.com for more details.

What would a show be without a visit with Scott Lowdermilk of Cattron Group. Scott is a dear friend to us at CPM. We had a chance to catch up and he shared some great family stories. His mom, who seems like a real trooper may be attend-ing the Bluefield Show with him. She lives in that area and he’ll be taking some much needed family time to visit with her. His family came up with a creative way to keep his mom in tip-top shape. They brought her a dog and told her that it needed to be walked every day in order to stay happy and healthy. Three dogs later, his mom is still going strong. Good job!

We can’t say enough about our good buds Bruce and Geordie of McLahanan Corp. They are always hard at work at the shows and still manage to find some time for laughter and story telling. Bruce had some exciting news to share about their Crushing System at Black Thunder and how it is breaking all records. See Prod-uct News in this month for the details.

Ron Utley with FFE Minerals told me a few years back that he has retired? Though we still see him at all the shows and talk quite frequently. Retired in this industry means working 40-50 hours a week instead of 60-plus. That’s a lesson for the industry that may be concerned about filling positions for people reaching retirement – they may just be around lon-ger than expected. Good to see you Ron! Look for FFE at the Coal Prep Show as they always have a great exhibit.

CPM participated in the Silent Auction held at the Coal & Energy Division Lun-cheon. David Hurst with Cristal Clear Reclamation was the highest bidder for the full page ad donation. You’ll be see-ing more about this company in upcom-ing issues with a special focus in the July Issue - Surface Mining and Reclamation. Congratulations David, we’re looking for-ward to working with you!

The 2008 SME Show will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah. The prospectus will go out 4-5 months earlier this year expected in May or June. In order to participate in the advertising and marketing opportuni-ties with SME you’ll need to be signed up by Nov. 1. Make sure to mark your calen-dars as the show is expected to be anoth-er large event. See you next year! “Thank You” to everyone for all your kind words about CPM, it’s always nice to hear.

“We appreciated the opportunity to at-tend this years Conference. It was very enjoyable meeting many people from various Colleges and Universities who

are part of Mining Engineering as well as others involved in the Industry. I had not been to Denver before and found it to be

a very ‘user friendly’ city.”

Jim Walter Resources, Inc.Mike Hall and Ed Grygiel

“The show was a top notch production. A good list of exhibitors along with high attendance. The complimentary Cyber

Cafe was a nice touch. Made some great contacts that will lead to future

quote activity and orders.”

“Due to the recent turn of events in the mining industry, the 2007 SME Exhibi-tion was very benefi cial for Heintzmann

to display products available for safety in the coal mines. In particular the patent

pending Infl atable Life Curtain.”

“Agapito Associates, Inc. appreciates the opportunity to participate once again in the Annual SME Meeting and Exhibit. It is always a rewarding experience for us to meet with clients and other associates

in the mining industry.”

“Because of distance, Camber Corporation has not participated in the Western SME

Shows in the past. Our good alliance part-ners, American Commercial, Inc., asked us to participate this year for improved cover-age. We accepted their invitation. We were

pleased to find an attendance of 4,600 plus, many from mining fields outside our

usual marketing areas. We expect our attendance will pay future dividends.”

“Our booth this year supported four brand names: Formsprag and Marland,

both offering a full line of backstops and overrunning clutches and Wichita and Industrial Clutches which offer a

complete line of pneumatically actuated clutches and brakes. This years booth traffic was much better than the last two years, so we feel that this year’s show was a great success with a number of

great customer contacts made.”Michael P. Travis ,

Chris Billups of Tunnel Radio of America, demonstrated the UHF Ultracomm Two-Way Communication System for under-

ground mines. The high customer accep-tance of this unique product is a result of its superior performance commonly described by the phrase “Complete Coverage” Tun-

nel Radio used SME 2007 to introduce Ethernet switch products from GarrettCom. Laura Williams showed GarrettCom’s en-vironmentally hardened Ethernet switches

used in Tunnel Radio’s new NetComm Data Communication product line appropriate for underground mine deployment using fiber optic and 10/100/1000 BaseT connectivity.

Polydeck Screen Corp.

“Polydeck Screen Corporation used their booth space to convey some of the unique aspects of their modular syn-thetic screen media and frame systems. Polydeck is the only manufacturer who injection molds all of their panels,

both polyurethane and rubber, to ensure consistent quality and superior performance. The panels’ modular 1’ X 1’ or 1’ X 2’ size makes them easier and safer to handle and

allows the quick change-out of a specific worn area rather than having to change an entire section of screen media. Polydeck’s patented Pipetop II TM frame system design features narrower rails than competitive systems, which

allows for more holes (greater open area) in each screen panel. All of these features result in screen media that will save time (in installation, maintenance and change-out),

improve worker safety, increase wear life and reduce life-cycle costs over the life of the screen deck. Since

1978, Polydeck has been the industry leader for innovative design solutions and responsive customer service.

An interesting (and entertaining) aspect of Polydeck’s

booth was the contest that was staged to see who could remove and reinstall four modular PolySnapTM screen panels in the shortest time. Each day, a winner was an-nounced and a prize was awarded. Winners on the last day of the show, Brian Sandhaus (1st place) and Joe

Neumann (2nd place) are included in the picture above.”
