Built in the heart of Minnesota, it was inevitable that

Shattuck-St. Mary’s School would enjoy a long history of

hockey on its campus. The first recorded official hockey team at

Shattuck School banded together in 1925 to skate on a small

pond in the area where Clapp Dormitory now stands. Over the

years, hockey remained a tenacious presence at Shattuck

School, and in 1968 the campus’ first indoor ice rink was built–

a lofty arched construction now affectionately referred to as

“The Barn.” Throughout the late 1980s, the SSM hockey

program saw hard times as school enrollment dropped and

players were harder to come by. For a few years, SSM partnered

in a co-op program with Faribault High School in order to get

a full team on the ice and in 1989 had only two players on the

roster. Then, in 1990, the school embarked on a visionary plan

to bring hockey back to SSM–stronger than ever. In the first

year of SSM’s new phase of hockey, players were recruited from

all over the country to join in the building of a new program. In

its second year, the fledgling program had already garnered

enough attention to add a second team. By 1993, SSM had

outgrown the local high school hockey league and expanded its

season to include a full schedule of USA Hockey games and

tournaments. In 1996, the School fielded its first girls hockey

team, and the top boys midget team skated to its very first

National Championship tournament. Three short years

later, in 1999, the Boys Prep team, led by Andy Murray,

former Head Coach of the Los Angeles Kings, kicked off

what would become a tradition of excellence by winning

its first Tier I Boys U18 National Championship title. The

Boys Prep team has since won three more National

Championships–in 2001, 2003, and 2005. Also in 2005 and

2006, the Girls Prep team capped its seasons with back-to-

back Tier I Women’s U19 National Championships.

These days, the SSM hockey program is made up of

eight teams playing a seven-month schedule of 50-

70 games per season. The two girls teams, two bantam teams

and four midget teams practice daily on two campus ice rinks,

and compete in games and tournaments around the United

States and Canada. Under the leadership of Director of Hockey

Tom Ward and Director of Prospect Evaluation J.P. Parisé,

supported by an incredible staff of coaches, trainers, and

teachers, the SSM hockey program has grown into the premier

program in the United States. As Sports Illustrated magazine

put it,“Shattuck-St. Mary’s School is to high school hockey

what Harvard is to law school.”

SHATTUCK HOCKEY TEAM

More than just a school, Shattuck-St. Mary’s is made up of

students, faculty and coaches who actively create a living

and learning community. A coeducational, college preparatory

boarding and day school for students in grades 6 through 12,

we offer students the chance to combine the solid foundation

of challenging, motivating academics with focused opportunities

in extracurricular areas. This combination of possibilities and

resources for excellence is at the heart of what we call the

“& experience” and is what makes SSM unique. What does

this mean? Integrated into our

academic program are the

possibilities to branch out and

excel in a number of areas, such

as hockey, figure skating, soccer,

and the arts.

In 2006-07, our 387 students come

from 34 states and 20 countries.

With an average class size of 15,

and a student to teacher ratio of

7 to 1, our primary goal is to

prepare each student not just for

college but for a confident life

beyond our doors. Founded in

1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s is one

of the oldest college preparatory schools in the Midwest.

We seek students of above-average ability and achievement

who are eager to take full advantage of the School’s academic

program and broad range of extracurricular activities.

Application forms can be obtained by contacting the

After senior co-captain Emily Kranz punched in the game-

winner with just more than a minute left in regulation,, Shattuck-St. Mary’s 19 and Under Girls team held on

for a 2-1 victory and its second national championship in asmany years.

“I just had the puck on my stick and saw that [Assabet Valleygoaltender Molly Schaus] was moving the other way, so I shotand it went in,” Kranz told Mark S. Lindsay of Red Line Editorialafter the title celebration had quieted. “I don’t even know howit went in.”

Before the game, head coach Gordie Stafford told FaribaultDaily News correspondent Al Daniel ’07: “These kids have been through a lot together, and the rules of the game saythey’re only going to be a team for one more game, so theyhave to make the best of it, and again, I’ve said all year, I’ll bet on us every time.”

Not a very risky bet, consider the Sabres were 60-4-4 goinginto the contest, but the second national title arrived with some nail-biting moments. Although SSM entered the game as the defending national champion, Assabet Valley was on an organizational roll. Its 12U, 14U and 16U teams had all won their respective championships earlier in the afternoon.(SSM’s Girls U16 team went 1-2 in pool play but did not score enough goals to advance to the quarterfinals.)

SSM appeared to drive the action for most of the game, but couldn’t shake Assabet. After a scoreless first period, SSMdefenseman Sarah Murray scored a power-play goal on a passfrom fellow defenseman Sasha Sherry with just more than fourminutes left in the second.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s goalie Paige Keranen preserved the 1-0 lead in the third period with a big save on an odd-man rush.Keranen finished with 19 saves although Assabet Valley tied the game with 3:14 left. Just 51 seconds later, Kranz put titleNo. 2 back in the Sabres’ collection.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s is proud of its grassroots programs: Hockey Day

Camps, Weekend Skills Clinics and Skating Academy Classes.

Student-athletes participating in the hockey program at

Shattuck-St. Mary’s School have the opportunity to benefit

from working with coaches who have an extensive network of

collegiate contacts and working with college advisors who have

significant experience working with the full spectrum of colleges

and universities available in the United States.

Coaches and college advisors work together to help each

student- athlete develop a potential list of colleges and

universities with particular attention paid to the

athletic/academic interface. While coaches assist student-

athletes in preparing for contact with collegiate coaches and

official/unofficial visits, college advisors assist with NCAA

Clearinghouse registration, test registration, and application

preparation.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s School has more than a decade of

experience in working with student-athletes who seek to

continue their athletic participation at the highest level possible

during their college years while also pursuing an academic

career in preparation for graduate and/or professional school.

We, as an institution, take great pride in providing students with

the counsel of skilled professionals who have made working

with motivated young people their life’s work.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s Hockey Program

Welcome to the 2006-07 Shattuck-St. Mary’s Hockey Season! The 2006-07 hockey season is shaping up to be one of our most competitive seasons for all of our teams here at

Shattuck-St. Mary’s School. The student-athletes who are in our program this year are as strong as we have ever had.

We are all looking forward to following their progress throughout the season.

The Girls Prep team won its second consecutive national championship last season. The Girls U16 team made its first trip

to the national tournament and performed well in its inaugural chance at a national championship in Buffalo, NY, last spring.

Both teams are poised to make a strong bid for titles this spring in San Jose, CA. The Boys Prep, U16 and Bantam Tier I all had

strong showings at the national tournament in Rochester, NY, last spring as well. All of our teams moved along very nicely

throughout the year. The coaching staff was very pleased with the level of play and progress each team and individual made

during the year.

We are eager to see some of the new things we have added to our program—our new strength training system and our

video program—pay off with increased skill and confidence in our players as the season moves along. We are grateful for

the donations made by our supporters to help these initiatives come to life. All of us involved with Shattuck-St. Mary’s

hockey are excited about great things happening in our School and hockey program. We want to wish all of the teams and

coaching staffs the best of luck this year!

Shattuck-St. Mary’s Successes

28

Drew Stafford ’03As a senior at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School,

Drew kicked up his play a notch and

scored 116 points (49 goals, 67 assists).

He was named the Best All-Around

Athlete/Citizen and finished his SSM

career with three hockey letters and two

golf letters. (Drew’s father, Gordie, played

professional hockey for the Milwaukee

Admirals from 1980-87 and currently is

the head coach of the girls’ hockey

program at SSM.)

Next up for Drew was the elite college

game of the Western Collegiate Hockey

Association. After leading the University of North Dakota with 24 goals and

24 assists in 42 games last season, Drew ended his college hockey career

with 118 points (48 goals and 70 assists) in 120 games. Drew was named to

the All-WCHA team and the All-America Third Team. In addition to career

scoring highs in 2005-06 for UND, Drew led the NCAA with seven

shorthanded goals. In his three-year career at UND, Drew scored five goals

and garnered nine assists in nine WCHA and five NCAA playoff games.

Drew was one of just two college players who played for the U.S. National

team at the 2006 World Championships in Latvia. That was not his first

world-class experience, however, since Drew had also represented the

United States twice at the World Junior Championships, including as a

member of the first U.S. team to win the gold, in 2003.

Now, he’s moving on to the professional level. Drew signed a three-year

contract with Buffalo on May 3, 2006, and the 6-foot-2, 215-pound right

winger competed for a spot on the Sabres’ roster until the closing days of

training camp. While with the NHL team, Drew played in one

preseason game, against Columbus, but did not notch a point. The

Sabres, who drafted Drew with their first pick in the 2004 National

Hockey League Entry Draft (13th overall), assigned him to their

Rochester affiliate in the American Hockey League. In his first nine

games with the Americans, Drew has four goals and two assists.
