XTERRA NEVADASCRAMBLE 5K / 10K

A benefit for the victims of Hurricane Katrina

Not your everyday 5k/10k! Forget boring old road runs that conquer miles and miles of concrete and asphalt, theXTERRA Nevada Scramble trail run is a "mud in your eye, don't twist your ankle on that rock" kind of run. These are, infact, the same paths that Sunday's XTERRA competitors will tackle on their way to the finish line. Get to know InclineVillage in a whole new way - all while breathing in some fresh air and exercising your way to the start of a great day.

OFF-RROAD SPORTS FESTIVAL

XTERRA NEVADAWhile only a select few will qualify for the championship race on Sunday, one-and-all are eligible to compete in theXTERRA Nevada open competition on Saturday. The race is comprised of three disciplines: a 750-meter swim,32-kilometer mountain bike, and 5k trail run. While the swim and bike segments are half-the-distance of the championshipcourse, the mountain bike leg is identical to that of the main event.

Participants can even create a two or three person group - where one person does the swim, another the bike, and theother the run - and enter the XTERRA Nevada relay team competition. This is a great way to have fun with family andfriends even if all three disciplines aren't your thing.

Nevada's spectacular natural environment and themajestic Sierra Nevada mountain range provide a world-class setting and challenge for the biggest race of theseason.

The national championship starts at the beach fronting theHyatt Regency Lake Tahoe where competitors swim twolaps of a 750-meter course in the spring-fed, crystal clearwaters located 6,200 feet above sea level. The swim isfollowed by a short run to the grassy transition area atVillage Green.

The second element is a 32-kilometer, single loopmountain bike course. Following a short, paved sectionpast prime, lake front real estate on Incline Village'sLakeshore Blvd., competitors reach the trails at LakeTahoe Nevada State Park, where the race really begins.

The first off-road section greeting riders is a 1,600-footclimb up Tunnel Creek Road to Tahoe's famed Flume Trail. The "Flume" is known for its exposed crossing of sheerrock faces and incredible sweeping vistas. Those focusingtoo much on the view may end up casualties of this 4.4-mile section of single track.

"It's my favorite ride in the whole world!" exclaimsXTERRA Pro Jenny Tobin.

At the aspen-clad Marlette Lake, a second leg-burningclimb on Hobart Road takes racers to the Tahoe Rim Trail.Halfway into the 6.6-mile section is the Marlette LakeOverlook at 8,700 feet above sea level (the highest pointon the XTERRA course). From the top, a 2,500-footdescent to the second transition area resembles "Toad'sWild Ride" as it passes through a series of switchbacksand the waterless Twin Lakes.

The last leg of the race is a 10-kilometer forest trail runconsisting of two 5-kilometer laps through some of nature'smost arduous obstacles, including a dozen creek cross-ings. While the run course remains relatively flat, there arenumerous short, steep climbs and quick descents.Splashing through glacial creeks, balancing along narrowlog crossings, and skipping over boulders are just a few ofthe final tests of skill and endurance. The run course alsopasses by the crowd at the compound, who can hoot, holler, monitor, and react to the action.

The XTERRA Nevada course on Saturday is identical tothat of the main event, except the swim and run segmentsare half-the-distance.

Thirty pro men and 17 pro women representing 10 countries will toe the start line at theHyatt Beach in Incline Village. There are five Olympians in the group, and a host of world-class mountain bikers, swimmers, and runners. The title is up for grabs...MEN’S RACE

Conrad Stoltz has to be the men’s favorite. He won this race three years in a row from2001 thru 2003 before struggling though a mediocre season in 2004. In ‘05, he’s been onfire and was unstoppable until Mike Vine crushed him and the high-altitude course inKeystone, Colorado on Aug. 14. If Vine can do that again, nobody can beat him, but Stoltzis on a self-declared mission to dominate this sport like he has in the past and it’s hard todoubt him. Next up is Eneko Llanos, last year’s winner and the current and two-timeXTERRA World Champ. He was hurt earlier this year, however, and finished second toOlivier Marceau at XTERRA Spain and second to Nicolas LeBrun at XTERRA Germany lastmonth. Other strong contenders include Olympians Olivier Marceau - the two-timeXTERRA European Tour Champion, and rookie Brent McMahon, who’s always first out ofthe water. Mexico’s Francisco Serrano showed he’s capable in Milwaukee, finishing just 47seconds behind Stoltz. Josiah Middaugh is America’s best hope, and he had the fastestbike and run here last year, although his swim put him more than four minutes behind theleaders. Sylvain Dodet had a great season last year to win the Pro Series and was secondhere, but he hasn’t raced in an XTERRA in 2005. Justin Thomas and Jason Chalker bothlive and train in Reno during the season so they’re likely as familiar with this course asanybody racing. Canada’s Michael Simpson just beat some big name triathletes to win theCity of Los Angeles Triathlon held September 11th. Seth Wealing was fourth in Richmond, fast, and has mountain bike skills. Greg Krause is another U.S. guy that lives at altitudeand has had a pair of podium finishes this year.WOMEN RACE

In the women's race it's simple and once again, all about Jamie and Melanie. They'vebeen 1-2 in 14 of the last 15 races (Whitmore leads during this stretch 8-6, with threestraight wins in Tahoe but McQuaid won the last race in Keystone). They enter this racedead even in points as both have won two championship events this year, and the winnerwill walk away with $19,000 in prizes ($14k for the Series and $5k for first). The heat is on!Candy Angle finished third here last year, and is third in points, and she’s won a big onebefore (the 2002 XTERRA World Championship). First-year standout Jess Harrison hasthree top five finishes under her belt and comes out of the water with a lead. Perhaps thefirst person out of the water this year will be a woman, America’s finest Barb Lindquist. It’sher first-ever XTERRA and possibly her last triathlon on U.S. soil as she announced plansof retirement. Melissa Thomas quietly stays in contention every race with fantastic timeson the bike. Jenny Tobin is never too far back and a great runner. Canadian DanelleKabush finished 3rd in Maui last year, but has yet to have a great race this season. JanaePritchett is comfortable at altitude and in the snow (which it might) as a professional alpineskier. Monique Merrill was third in Keystone, and she won the Pro Series back in 2001. Thereal darkhorse might be four-time NORBA Champ and two-time Olympian Jimena Florit, who had the best bike in Keystone and is getting better at the swim and run.

The Nissan Xterra USA Championship series is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship tocompete for within their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regionsare invited to compete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship inNevada on October 2. This year there are more than 50 races heading into 31 states across the country, as well as PuertoRico and Saipan. It marks the ninth straight year of expansion for the sport of XTERRA.

Here's how the Series works:1) There are eight regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:

NORTH EAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York.MID ATLANTIC (MA) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C.SOUTH EAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin IslandsNORTH CENTRAL (NC) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky.SOUTH CENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas.MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming.NORTH WEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska.SOUTH WEST (SW) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands, Pacific Territories.

2) Age Group: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on January 1, 2005. Athletes compete in the followingage categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+ (w), 60-64 (m), 65+(m),

3) Series competitors race for points at their choice of 50+ events - including Nissan Xterra Points Series (NXPS) racesand Nissan Xterra Championship Series (NXCS) races. Competitors are required to race and count points in at least oneevent in his/her region. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like, however, they count just their best three fin-ishes.

4) Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. If you race at more than one Nissan XterraChampionship event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as the NissanXterra Points Series races. There are two points systems:

Nissan Xterra Championship Series:

Nissan Xterra Points Series:

5) The highest points scorers in each region are invited to compete for a national title at the Nissan Xterra USAChampionship in Nevada. The competitor with the most points in their age group in each XTERRA Region earns the titleof XTERRA Regional Champion, and is invited to nationals - along with the other top finishers.

Following an action-packed racing season that will span 14 countries with more than 90 events, XTERRA will host its 10thNissan Xterra World Championship in Makena, Maui on October 23rd. A season-ending blow-out like no other, the WorldChampionship is the culmination of a worldwide series of races held in Saipan, South Africa, Germany, Czech Republic,Spain, New Zealand, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Luxemburg, Japan, Brazil, and the United States.

The race course, considered one of XTERRA's toughest and most grueling, will consist of a 1.5-kilometer roughwaterswim, a grueling 30-kilometer mountain bike on the slopes of Haleakala, and an 11-kilometer trail run. Access to this leg-endary course is permitted once a year - on race day. Conditions change radically from year to year, diminishing theadvantage to repeat competitors, and perpetuating the course's stature as among the most intimidating in the series.

The sold-out field is limited to 500 competitors, who represent the best off-road, multisport athletes on the planet. It is a"winner take all" race, with one of the richest pro purses in multisport at $125,000, and it is awarded solely on the basis ofthe Maui performance. Since this race is a stand-alone event, it offers a unique opportunity to competitors. Eventhose who have had a less than stellar season, are given an opportunity to redeem themselves and earn the coveted titleof XTERRA World Champion. Last year Eneko Llanos of Spain captured the men’s championship for the second straight year and Jamie Whitmore from

California won her first women’s world championship.A special prime, the Hawaiian Airlines Double, will pay $2,500 to the man and woman with the fastest combined Hawaii

Ironman and XTERRA World Championship time. Only eight days and a narrow channel of ocean separate the two events, which each year attract a growing number of endurance athletes. In 2004, Canadians Peter Reid won the men’s doubleand Heather Fuhr won the women’s double.

CBS will be there to televise all the action for a one-hour "CBS Sports Spectacular" which will air on Super Bowl Sundayat 12 noon.

THE 10th NISSAN XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

33

IT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when TomKiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers ofXTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for theWaikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV."First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second,

what looks good on TV? - The beaches and the ocean,"explained Kiely.

The concept was pretty simple. TV sports and entertain-ment is one of the biggest industries in the world. Thetravel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world. Bringthose two together in programming, and you've gotsomething big.So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International

Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition thatattracted water safety specialists from Australia, NewZealand, California, and of course, Hawaii. Then, he forgeda relationship with ESPN - the worldwide leader in sports.

In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty ofWaikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of thePacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director."

"So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," saysKiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes andTV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and

Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TVshows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping thebenefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating.

"So the next year (1992) we produced seven HawaiianSports Adventure Shows…multiple segments, differentstories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, goodfun stuff," said Kiely.

Those seven shows were in addition to the OceanChallenge and a few others televised events, including theinaugural Tour O' Hawaii.

"Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now themanaging director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The TourO' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists wereallowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders fromevery country kept their amateur status so they could racein the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signedwith Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the

field was a who's who of international cycling."A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,

road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountainbiking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TVshows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced theHawaiian Mountain Tour.

In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-FamerDean Crandall established the rules and held the first-evermountain bike stage race. This is also where many of theXTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in theHawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place atKualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain rangemeets the ocean, and the story goes that after their racesthe mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jumpin the water. It sparked a thought…why not have amountain bike triathlon?

By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-roadtriathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?

Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now theWailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea fortheir grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau waslooking for a new event that could tell a different story aboutMaui's south shore because all the exposure up to that pointwas golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel andsouth shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beachin front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TVfor the whole world to see?

Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in themarketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the verysubject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have allthe main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.

Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection ofopportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas andVP of Marketing Janet Clark into his office.

"Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they werethinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we'reforever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. Iimmediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I'vegot the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.

"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."

XTERRA BEGINNINGS

THE WORLD OF XTERRAAt the finish line of the very first race in 1996 it was clear that XTERRA wasgoing to be more than just a one-off event. There was passion in the eyes ofthe competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined tobecome a lifestyle…a movement. We believed. So much so we restructuredthe company to keep it growing. Look at where XTERRA is today…

- The first piece of expansion started with more races, a lot more. From one to 90+ in 14 countries in a nine-year span - including a 53-stop U.S. series for amateurs and a full-blown European Tour.

- We initiated a series of XTERRA Camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them startedtowards an active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plusthe chance to race as part of a relay team. We even offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our toppros.

- We offer close to a half-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport athletesand garner the attention of national and international media.

- We make champions. In the U.S. series alone we recognize 168 amateur regional champions and 20 amateurnational champions. Then we invite the best amateurs and pros from around the world to race for world titles.

- We get kids involved wherever we go with the Nissan Kids Base Camp. It's a free schedule of events with run-ning and bike races, clinics on how to be safe, climbing walls, and other fun games. The notion is to get kidsoutdoors and active.

- We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV. A dozen shows reaching into homes allover the world with inspiring images of fun activities in great places.

- We became consumer friendly. First with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition. Then, with races in more than a dozen countries and nearly every state in the U.S., we knew traveling was part of thegame so we selected Expedia's WWTE Technology to power XTERRA Travel on our website. We also recentlyfinished re-creating XTERRAPlanet.com, which is soon to be a complete resource for any outdoor adventure.

- With the introduction of the XTERRA Foundation this year - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundationis a non-profit specifically designed to give kids a chance.

- We've opened the doors for runners, not just multisport athletes, with the XTERRA Scramble Series. These5k and 10k fun runs go to cities in America we haven't been able to reach yet with XTERRA - providing morechances to participate in the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle.

- The movement is growing rapidly, and has extended to events like the Nevada Passage (a six-day adventurecompetition in Nevada created for the everyday warrior) and the XTERRA Iceman Cometh (our first venture in tothe world of winter events).

XTERRA FOUNDATIONWe can help children get off to a better start.

WHAT WE BELIEVE INIn an interview for the 2004 Tour de France, Lance Armstrong said that hewas pretty sure that the race was going to go to 'the guy who was best-pre-pared to win'.

We think that's true of every aspect of life and the XTERRA Foundation wasstarted to help give kids who might not be 'the best prepared' a chance at ful-filling their dreams.

We're athletes, not educators, but we do understand the concept of 'pre-pared to win'.

Poverty is a challenge. Broken homes are a challenge. Poor diet is a chal-lenge...but a lack of hope is the biggest challenge of all. At XTERRA Foundation, we believe that we need to start byteaching kids that winning is possible.

We believe that the best way to begin is to boost an individual child's belief in his or her own abilities. We work to teachchildren that they can learn, graduate from high school and succeed in college. We build a sense of pride by supportingtheir athletic achievement and academic advancement.

HOW YOU CAN HELPThe XTERRA Foundation is growing. We need lots of help in order to help a lot of kids.

This year, we have launched a series of 21 events in cities across North America. Most of these are XTERRAScrambles, off-road fun runs, to benefit local community not-for-profits who share our educational goals.

You can help by committing your time or your cash to efforts in your community.1. Individuals can help us start an XTERRA Foundation group in communities to mentor and support the youth.2. Entrepreneurs can help us start up the XTERRA Scramble Series.3. If you are a company, let's see how we can combine our resources to best serve the youth.4. If you are a non-profit or part of a community organization, talk to us and we'll see how we and our partners can

help give your kids a better chance.
