Intro

�

Nov. - Redline was born when two guys with a com-mon interest in welding and motorcycles began making frames and swingarms. With a 6-peson staff, they named the company Redline and began producing lightweight, high quality motorcycle frames for flattrack, TT, speedway or motocross.

JaN. - Replacement swing-arms were Redline’s hottest commodity in 1974, when this new sport called BMX began to gain attention. With the owner’s son gaining interest, they began thinking of ways to make stronger bike parts. A local bike shop called Pedalers West bet Redline that they can’t come up with a stronger yet lighter fork for BMX. They’re up for the challenge.

1974

Dec. - Christmas sales of the first Redlines didn’t go too well, as many shops could not sell an $85 frame; a unheard of price back then.

Feb. 10 - According to BMX history, the first tubular chromoly Redline fork is created on this day. It’s safe to say that Redline forever changed the bicycle industry, as heavy, bladed forks would soon become a thing of the past.

1996-1999 // A Black boarder gets added.

May - Meanwhile, 1,115 miles north of the Redline factory, in Renton, WA., a man named Terry Heller begins selling bike parts out of the back of his Ford stationwagon. Seattle Bike Supply is started. Little did anyone know how these two companies would evolve.

Nov. - Redline begins the very first production of BMX frames known as the ‘75 Squareback - due to its angled rear stays. The front end was very short and featured a small wedge gussett. Bike shop owner Rick Twomey and his team give Redline valuable input on the frame design.

JaN. - Redline’s first product tester is one of their employees; a 15 year old grommett from the valley named byron Friday. After consistently busting sin-gle-clamp stems, Redline digs into their motorcycle roots and comes up with a dual-clamp chromoly stem for Byron to try to break. He can’t.

JuNe - Redline appears on its very first front-cover: BICYCLE MOTOCROSS NEWS, with John Palfreyman at Saddleback, aboard a 3-of-a-kind looptail Redline prototype. Only one of those frames still known to exist.

1975

Redline's limited edition "30 Year Anniversary Retro Kit" comes with 4130 chromoly frame, fork, V-bars, Flight cranks and Certificate of Authencity, all packaged neatly in a foam casing and sealed with a clear plexi cover.

As we said, it is a limited edition package. Only 100 will be made, and all four items are hand-stamped with "matching numbers." The Retro Frame is made using modern day geometry and technology (such as OS 1 1/8 threadless steerer and canti mounts), but sports many of the classic Redline trademarks from the early days:

1974 Redline fork with 1980 Proline fork dropouts, 1975 Squareback rear stays, the infamous 1976 2-hole gus-sett, and classic 5-inch headtube first seen on Proline's in 1979 and used up until 1985 on PL-24's. Oh, we almost forgot--the hand-stamped frame # is on the coaster brake bracket, which came on all Redline frames up until 1978.

Of course, all of the matching pieces are nickel plated like the original Redline motorcycle frames and first BMX products, and graphics are a combo of the state of the art Proline era.

The Anniversary Kit will definitely be No.1 on any Redline fan's collection list.

FLIGHT SerieSBrand new for 2004, Redline introduces the FLIGHT Series of hardcore race bikes. With input from Redline’s top AA-pro BUBBA HARRIS, the Flight bikes were built with lighter yet stronger U-6 alloy tubing, and equipped with European bottom brackets and cassette hubs throughout. These bikes are ready for a Grands main event right off the showroom floor.

MaR. - Redline swings into full production with their ’76 Squareback. The gussett is now larger and sports the trademark two holes. The rear stays are still made of rectangular tubing, but are smoother in the bends. The front end is lengthened to a whopping 17 inches. (By comparison, today's standard length is 21.5").

Nov. - Redline runs their first advertisement in a magazine -- featuring famous Rick’s Bike Shop rider John Palfreyman.

JaN. - Redline’s first Proline is created; utilizing a 5 inch head-tube and thin rear dropouts. Byron Friday races it down Weinart Mountain, one of the gnarliest downhills in BMX history. It survives.

ocT. - Chromoly Redline "V" bars become the "norm" in BMX. Everyone who is somebody has to have the bent "v" crossbar, spawning a spree of cheap imitators and creating a new market for "V"-shaped crossbar pads.

JaN. - According to Redline ledgers, by this time, they have sold 10,000 frames.

MaR. - Redline begins experimenting with a chromoly 3-piece crank. It still needs refining.

aPRIl - Seattle Bike Supply begins distributing Redline bicycles. No one would’ve ever guessed where this would lead the two.

JuNe - The Redline Team of Stu, Greg, Dain, Ruminer, Clinton and others hit the road in the custom Redline motorhome. If only that motorhome could talk.

Nov. - Greg Hill appears on the very first cover of BMX Plus magazine (originally titled Inside BMX Plus!).

MaR. - First tubular chromoly cranks go into production. They dub it the Flight crank. Redline comes up with a product that changes the entire bicycle industry.

Nov. - Las Vegas: Stompin’ Stu becomes ABA’s very first No.1 Pro.

Dec. - For the first time ever, Team Redline goes down unda’. It’s the Aussie-vs-Yank Challenge, and Redline’s John crews takes the cake.

"Winning the first International challenge in australia has to be my biggest highlight." -says Crews.

JaN. - Suntour comes on board as the first official cosponsor of Team Redline.

Feb. - Arizona: Mighty Stu gets handed the keys to a customized Van, his prize for being No.1 Pro.

aPRIl - The MX-II and Microline frames round out Redline’s line-up for all sizes of riders.

May - Redline prints their first catalog, introducing their first four complete bikes. Unknown at the time, these Catalogs would someday go for big bucks on E-Bay ... that is, once personal computers and the internet are invented.

JaN. 21ST - The phone rings. It’s BMX ACTION magazine. They inform Redline that they’ve swept the NoRa cup awards -- winning Best Rider (Stu Thomsen) and Best Team of the year.

May - Missouri: Joining in on the current cruiser craze, Jeff Kosmala shows up on the first prototype Pl-24, and proceeds to kick some bootie. The BMX World drools heavily.

SePT. - Redline picks up the Ragin’ Cajun; some unknown, softspoken dude from Louisiana named D.D. leone.

ocT. - A Jumping Contest at a BMX national? It was, but not as we know it today. In the "How-far-can-you-launch into-a-sand-pit off-a-2-foot-wood-en-ramp?" contest, Redline’s Jeff Kosmala wins with a distance of 31 feet, 11 inches.

JaN. - Redline signs-up Greg Grubbs; the fastest BMXer to ever come from Nebraska.

SePT. - Stu makes it 2 in a row for NBL; the first pro to ever do so.

JaN. - Redline’s first freestyler, the RL-20, is born. Backed by the support of the freestyle superstar on the BMX ACTION trick team, Redline is one of the first legit leaders in the fresh freestyle era. Still argued today -- does the acronym RL stand for Redline or the rider?

Feb. - D.D. leone is named as part of the Terrible Ten, the opinionated Top-10 ameteurs in BMX.

aPRIl - Yet another Redline first; tapered tubing (large to small diameter) on their forks.

May - Redline sponsors the "World Almanac BMX Skills Competition" ... almost, but not quite, an early version of the X-Games.

July - The long awaited Pl-24 makes its produc-tion debut to the oooh’s and ahhhhh’s of the BMX media. "It handled more like a 20 inch than a cruiser."

Dec. - By the year’s end, Grubbs has won two Pro mains and three Pro Trophies (Opens). However, Redline still drops him for being "a bit too punk rock" for Redline's pristine image.

Dec. - To satisfy the ever-expanding, hungry freestyle crowd, Redline quenches their thirst with the ProStyler.

JaN. - Redline introduces the Forklifter system; still one of the cleanest and most preci-sion chromoly handlebars ever created. The 4-piece bar fea-tured capped/curved ends and welded-on numberplate tabs, to fit the pre-formed Forklifter plate.

Feb. - D.D. leone turns pro, and immediately puts Redline in the winner’s circle.

MaR. - The Redline squad nabs a mild mannered mini mite, putting the mini MP-20 frame on the map and setting a new Redline standard for takin’ care of the little guys.

JaN. - Redline debuts the RL-20II, a state of the art freestyle bike with twin top tubes that wraps around the headtube, and integrated rear stand-ing platforms on the bottom chainstays. Redline accurately describes it as "exotic."

Past No.1 Pro in the NBA, Scott Clark, is hired as Redline’s top pro.

Feb. - Flight cranks are now available in White.

SePT. - Steve Giberson, ex-editor of BMX ACTION maga-zine, is hired as Redline Team Manager.

Nov. - The ABA starts the official BMX Hall of Fame and Redline’s founder is their first Industry Inductee.

Dec. - The 1986 line of Redlines arrive, in a trend setting variety of colors ranging from turquoise to red to hazard yellow to "radberry" (a sort of purple).

JaN. - Redline buys a 40 foot long trailer to replace the boxtruck as their new Team vehicle. Torker Pro Jason Carnes$ is hired to drive the new Redline rig. He’s handed the keys to a new Ford F-350 Dually, a Proline bike, Redline uniform and a Rand McNally map.

Feb. - Redline’s cyclo-cross team heads to Belgium and Holland for the World Championships and gets schooled in the sand.
