    initiative. Microsoft has spent a lot of money

    developing code to stem the tide ofsuccessful hacks of their operating systems.This new initiative is intended to make 2003

    comply with the 3-Ds; secure by design,secure by default, and secure in

    deployment.

    u A new Repair context menu option for

    Network Connections. The will perform an

    ipconfig /renew as well as an ipconfig

    /registerdns command.

    u Support tab for Network Connections. Rightclick any connection and select status, and

    then select the support tab. This will give youthe ipconfig information including the MAC

    address

    u The routing and remote access wizard, which

    has always been extensive, has been

    modified to makes the initial configuration

    easier to understand.

    u RRAS now has a new feature called Netbiosover TCP/IP proxy. This will allow remote

    access clients that connect to a sub-nettednetwork to resolve names without the use of

    DNS and/or WINS.

    K ey Ring Manager

    u The Credential Manager Key Ring is a new

    time saving feature which basically

    remembers the credentials that you used to

    connect to a network. If for example youmapped several drive letters to differentservers and used various user accounts and

    password information for each, then this

    feature would allow Windows to remember

    these credentials should you re-connect.

    TCPIP configuration and diagnosis:

    uTCP/IP is installed by default and itcannot be removed. The netsh

    command has a new sub-command toreset the TCPIP configuration to theinstallation defaults. Syntax for this sub-command is: netsh interface ip reset.

    In addition TCP/IP now has an alternateconfiguration tab on the property page

    uThe Netstat command has beenupgraded to include a new o switch.

    This switch may be used to display theprocess identifier (PID) for eachconnection. The PID of each task maybe viewed by selecting View and then

    Select Columns from the task manager.

    Shadow Copies

    u Windows server 2003 includes several enhancementsto its file handling capabilities.

    u One of the more interesting features is shadow copiesof shared folders.

    u When enabled by an administrator, this feature savescopies of documents stored on a server shares atpreset intervals.

    u The administrator sets the schedule for theseintervals.

    u This allows the individuals user to access thesecopies from a new tab in the file properties dialog of awindows client.
