SPORT

In the Olympic qualifying year, Australiareceived mixed results in their fourOlympic sports.

Philippe Rizzo continued his outstandingcareer with strong, consistentperformances on the World Cup circuitwhich led to a 4th place in the High Barapparatus final at the WorldChampionships. The high standard finalwas extremely close - any of the top fourathletes could have won gold. Philippe’sresult helped lift the moral of the men’steam who had a disappointing WorldChampionship campaign.

From the beginning of their WorldChampionship preparation it was clearthat the 2003 Women’s team was aspecial unit. A mixture of youth andexperience is always a strong ingredientfor success and this was no exception.Allana Slater and Jacqui Dunn led theteam magnificently, with youngstersMonette Russo and Belinda Archercoming of age with outstandingperformances under extreme pressure. The bronze medal was a fitting rewardfor all team members and their dedicatedcoaching staff led by National CoachPeggy Liddick.

Both Philippe Rizzo (FIG wild cardnomination) and the Women’s Teamqualified for the 2004 Olympics.

After the Rhythmic and Trampoline WorldChampionships, Australia qualifiedPenelope Blackmore (RG) and Lesley Daly(TRP) for the 2004 Olympics after Australia

2003 will always be remembered as the year Australian gymnasticsbroke through their “glass ceiling” when the National Women’steam captured the bronze medal in the team event at the WorldChampionships. This clearly has paved the way for future teamsin all gymsports to strive for World Championship success.

Increased membership and club development, in conjunctionwith continued international success for our leading athletes, created very strong momentum as we entered the Olympic year.

was awarded FIG continental wild cardsfor both positions.Special mention should also be made ofLauren Farry’s three individual goldmedals at the ANAC and FISAF WorldChampionships and AFLAC InternationalCup. These results enhanced Australia’salready strong reputation in the SportAerobic international community.

2005-2008 NESC Quadrennial Planning

The last six months of 2003 weredevoted to developing our national highperformance plans for the 2005-2008cycle. In particular, we participated inthe NESC Quadrennial Planning forumsinvolving the ASC, AIS, State Institutesand Academies. This involved extensivecommunication and debate amongst ourHigh Performance committees and AIS/SIS/SAS network. The main thrust of ourNational Plan was the restructure of theAIS Men’s and Women’s program. Thisplanning process will continue into 2004.

High Performance Network

We continue to have strong partnershipswith the Australian Institute of Sport,Victorian Institute of Sport, QueenslandAcademy of Sport, NSW Institute ofSport and Western Australian Instituteof Sport in the delivery of our Men’s andWomen’s programs. Without thefinancial commitment of this networkand the relevant State Associations, ourathletes would not receive the supportthat is necessary for success atinternational level.

DEVELOPMENT

Our national Club 10 accreditationscheme was integrated into the clubaffiliation process across Australia forthe first time. After a two year pilotinvolving 60 clubs, 523 clubs have nowentered into this program and they willreceive various services and benefitscommensurate to their “Star” rating.

In collaboration with our StateAssociations who remain our keyregistered Training Providers, our focusfor the year was the refinement andenhancement of the administrativeprocedures associated with our nationaleducation courses. A national coursesanction process was introduced by GAsupported by the development of anational course presenter team toensure our accreditation courses deliverquality education.

BUSINESS

We continue to enjoy a steady increasein our membership. Over 80 clubs nowregister “on line” and GA, with theassistance of the State Associations, continues to refine the membershipprocess and support systems. Memberbenefits were also enhanced with theintroduction of an interactive CDmembership card.

Our national insurance programprovides a very valuable membershipbenefit for our clubs and participants. The challenge remains to contain thecosts whilst introducing strong riskmanagement practices.

BOARD AND GOVERNANCE

There were six Board meetings throughoutthe year. An Executive committee andother committees ensured that Boardoperations were closely aligned tocorporate governance standards.

At the AGM in May, the constitution, onlyallowing three 2 year terms for thePresident, called for a change and MurrayChessell stepped down as President ofGymnastics Australia. The Vice PresidentKen Williamson was elected as Chairman.

Murray gave outstanding service in the roleof President through some very challengingtimes and GA is extremely indebted to himfor his leadership, wisdom andcommitment to our sport. Murray has notbeen lost to gymnastics as he accepted therole as Chairman of the 2005 WorldChampionship Organising Committee.

FINANCES

GA was pleased to return a small surplusfor the 2003 calendar year of $30,790against a budgeted deficit of $50,841.

GA remains reliant on the Australian SportsCommission for the funding of itsdevelopment projects and HighPerformance programs. We are alsoindebted to the AOC and ACGA for theircontinued support. The ACGA Target 2006funding program was launched in July andGA received a considerable financial boost

An international l icensing programinvolving our education and nationalprograms was introduced at the end of theyear. This will strengthen our relationshipswith our neighboring countries and alsogenerate new income streams for us.Further work will be done in 2004 in theSouth East Asia region.

EVENTS

The organisation of the 2005 Artistic WorldChampionships remained a major priorityfor GA, the WC2005 Organising Committeeestablished event plans, appointing theirMarketing Agents and launching the eventto the international community at the 2003World Championships.

Gymnastics Australia will also be involvedin the staging of the 2006 CommonwealthGames Gymnastic program and hasentered into an agreement withMelbourne 2006 Organising Committee todeliver these services.

A new format for our NationalChampionships will be introduced in 2004that will see all events (with the exceptionof Trampoline Sports) condensed into twomajor championships. It is hoped this willenhance promotional opportunities as wellas reducing the workload of national andstate event personnel.

to prepare its athletes for the 2006Commonwealth Games.Acromat remains a great supporterof Gymnastics Australia and theycontinue to provide first classequipment for all our events. SPORT REPORTKaren MyersSport Manager

2003 was an exciting and challenging year for gymnastics with athletes striving forOlympic qualification, Sport Management Committees (SMC) reviewing theirprograms and resources for the next cycle and clubs experiencing the ultimateexperience of the World Gymnaestrada.

Program Management

Throughout the year, the GAteam of Program Managersworked hard to support theirSports ManagementCommittees to deliver theprograms, events and servicesthat our community has cometo expect.

Program Managers, inconjunction with their SMCs,conducted their yearly reviewsand updates of the necessarydocumentation that underpinsthe sports such as selectionpolicies, technical regulations, national squad andcompetition handbooks andoperational plans.

An average of four SMCmeetings were held during theyear by each gymsport with aNational Joint TechnicalMeeting held in June byGymnastics Australia to allowall sports to discuss majorissues such as technicaleducation, planning, budgets, events, GA website andnational squad informationand communication.

On behalf of the ProgramManagers, thanks areextended to all the volunteerSMC members for theirvaluable time and expertise.

National Teams/Squads

Throughout the year, all gymsportsconducted a large number ofnational training camps andoverseas tours in preparation forWorld Championships or to assistnational junior and senior squaddevelopment.

Preparation for the 2006Commonwealth Games began inlate 2003 with the acceptance bythe ACGA of our Target 2006 plansfor MAG, WAG and RG.

2004 Olympic Preparation

• AOC Team Management meetings • Section Manager briefings • AOC selection process • Team processing • Team administration eg uniform and travel

ASDAGymnastics Australia continues towork closely with ASDA and the GAMedical Officer to ensure that ouranti doping policies and procedures

are followed correctly by all ourathletes. The Program Managers areresponsible for ensuring allinformation required by ASDA iscommunicated to the athletes.

Gymnastics Australia

2003 was indeed a year of highs and lows. Individually, Philippe Rizzo continues to achieve outstanding results on the internationalstage. His gold medal in the Paris World Cup on Horizontal Bar and his 4th place finish in the Horizontal Bar Final at the WorldChampionship with a score just 0.075 pts from a Gold medal, were the highlights.

Serious injuries to key gymnasts hampered our Senior team’s preparation and performance at the World Championships. OurJunior gymnasts achieved terrific results at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, OBI and Junior Japan competitions.

John Curtin resigned as the National Program Director in October. He contributed significantly to the development of theNational Program and promoted the growth of many of the HPC’s and gymnastic programs around the country. With theabsence of a National Coach, John also assumed the responsibility of coordinating the preparation of the Senior National Team.Over the years, John has been of enormous assistance to the MAG SMC and will be sorely missed.

Pavel Mamin retired from competitive gymnastics after more than 6 years of representing Australia internationally. Careerhighlights include 2 Commonwealth Games and 2 World Championships. Pavel was Australian Senior Champion in 2000 andcontinues his involvement in gymnastics by coaching in the ACT.

In ClosingWe faced many challenges both as acommittee and independently on personallevels and I cannot express sufficientgratitude to my colleagues for theircommitment and support. The task of the SMC elected by the R.G.community is one of many facets - to begreat communicators, relationshipbuilders, educators and leaders. The SMCis elected to present solutions notproblems.

Why do we choose to volunteer to play arole in our sport? To meet new people, help others, do fulfilling work, meet newchallenges, use natural talents – Be activeand involved and have fun!All of which leads me to the notice of theend of the cycle for the present SportManagement Committee in 2004.

2003 was a year that saw the sport continue to grow. This washighlighted in particular by the improved athlete performancesdemonstrated at the National Championships. The SMC was focusedon international and local needs and reviewed the sports resources inreadiness for the next cycle.

Major Highlights/AchievementsThe Sports Acrobaticscommunity received a setbackwhen Terry Jamieson resignedas National Technical Directorin October to spend more timewith family and work. Terryhad held the TechnicalDirector position since 2000and will be missed from theNational SMC. He continuesto coach at club level whichhe describes as his truepassion.

Sports Acrobatics held itsWorld Championships andWorld Age Group Gamesselection trial at the ArtisticGymnastics Canberra Cupevent in December 2003. This

was a major success for the profileof Sports Acrobatics with apotential International event forSports Acrobatics in Canberra everytwo years.

Program/Resources

The National Level System for sportsAcrobatics was reviewed via aworking party of:Suzi Jordan – ChairpersonPamela RyanKathrine SharwoodYuriy Stepchenkov

The review was called after the FIGintroduced a new World AgeGroup Games event every even year. The SMC recognised this as thefuture and that the current NationalLevels System was unable tocategorise the pair/group forselection to this event.

The revised National Levels Systemwas completed and approved at the2003 SPTA for levels 4 to 10 andcame into effect on 1st January2004.

Intl Tours/Camps/Events

It was disappointing whenGymnastics Australia was forced tocancel the first ever National SquadInternational tour. All NationalSquad pairs & groups were selectedto travel to China in July 2003 andtrain with the best Acrobaticathletes and coaches in the world.

The highlight was two competitionsagainst China. Due to the SARSepidemic in China at the time theevent was cancelled.

Our internationalrepresentatives continue to makefinals in World Class competitionand grass roots Acrobatics is morepopular than ever before. Moreathletes are moving into Acrobaticsfrom other gymsports. All this can’thappen without the officials andvolunteers that support this sport oncommittees or at events across thecountry. Gymnastics Australia isindebted to all of you.

Gymnastics Australia

BUSINESS REPORTMatthew ConnellBusiness Manager

National Membership/InsuranceSchemes:-Gymnastics Australia continues tomaintain a National Membership/Insurance Scheme run in conjunctionwith each State Association. The twoschemes ensure the efficient processingof our membership and the provisionof appropriate forms of insurance forall members.

It is pleasing to report an increase inmembership for 2003. Our threemembership categories (Athlete,Technical and Coach) all experiencedcontinued growth, which is anextremely positive result, leading intoan Olympic year. (Please seeMembership Statistics over page).

There is little doubt that these increasesare a direct result of programsdeveloped by Gymnastics Australia andsupported by the Australian SportsCommission, in particular Club 10 andthe Targeted Participation Program, which work in supporting the foundationof our sport – our Clubs, StateAssociations and their members.

The ongoing servicing of Technicalmembers by Gymnastics Australia hasresulted in new levels of membershiprenewals/retention and lead to theexpedient provision of membershipbenefits and membership relatedinquiries.

Our Membership database (iMIS) andits ancillary programs, systems and staffcontinue to play an invaluable role insupporting our membership. Thechallenge ahead is to streamline ourmembership processes in order toprovide more efficient service to allmembers; a commitment that is sharedby our Membership team, stateassociations and GA Board.

Thanks are extended to Shaun Doyle,Brad Edwards, Danni Hanna and BenKerswill (our Membership Team) for thecontinued growth of the Membershipdepartment.

2003 was a year of consolidation for the Business department of Gymnastics Australia.National schemes and initiatives that have been initiated in previous years began to solidifyand provide useful tools for the management and administration of the sport nationally. These included:-

Merchandise Department:-The Merchandise Department/GymShopat Gymnastics Australia continues toprovide a range of apparel, books andcoaching/program related materials forthe gymnastics community. Thisdepartment continues to provide analternative source of income for thesport.

The expansion of merchandise tocoincide with forthcoming internationalevents will also present an excitingopportunity in 2004 and beyond.

An exciting development within thisdepartment is the international interestin our coaching/program relatedresources, that have caught theattention of other English speakingnations. Gymnastics Australia hasundertaken work in 2003 to negotiatelicensing contracts in an effort togenerate additional income streamsfrom our resources. The fruits of this workwill be realized in 2004 and beyond withthe potential signing of formal contracts.

Furthermore, the ongoing tracking ofmerchandise sales via the iMIS databaseis allowing Gymnastics Australia to buildcustomer profiles and is assisting in theresearch and provision of newmerchandise lines.

Targeted Participation GrowthProgram:-In its second year of partnership withthe ASC, Gymnastics Australia continuedto develop and roll out its AEROSkoolsand GYMSkools programs, with theprimary aim of increasing participationand attracting new membership to ouraffiliated Clubs.

It is pleasing to note that both programsexperienced increases in membershipthroughout 2003, with the AEROSkoolsprogram being launched in newmarkets, (New South Wales andQueensland respectively) and theGYMSkools program consolidating itsservices in Victoria and establishing newlinks with Clubs operating as part of theClub 10 program.

Thanks are extended to our programpartners - the ASC, our National Co-ordinators; Karon Williams (NationalAEROSkools Co-ordinator) and Linda Pettit(National GYMSkools Co-ordinator) alongwith the KidSkills Australia staff andappointed State AEROSkools co-ordinators.

Information Technology:-Gymnastics Australia continues to strive forincreased use of Information Technology,to provide better service to our members. The ongoing development of the iMISdatabase and the Gymnastics Australiaweb site, are the central tools being usedto achieve this goal.

All web sites managed by GymnasticsAustralia are updated on a weekly basisand provide a portal for members to viewLatest News, search for Event Results, download Technical Information or view/change selected Membership details.

Substantial work has also been undertakento develop a consistent “look and feel” forall State Association web sites, withtemplates and artwork provided to Statesthroughout 2003. The aim is to minimizeduplication amongst national and state websites and present a unified brand to thecommunity. The results of this work willnot be fully realized until 2004 and beyond.

Following the success of the CD-Membership card provided to members in2003, Gymnastics Australia has workedhard to re-develop a “new look” CD-Membership card in 2003, that will bereleased to members in 2004. The newcard will act as a promotional tool for the2005 World Artistic GymnasticsChampionships and features new videos, games, screensavers and information. Thecard is predominantly aimed at our 5-12year old athlete market.

In closing, the Business department ofGymnastics Australia has consolidated itsoperations in 2003, in an effort to providebetter service to members. The workundertaken throughout the year hasensured that the sport is in the best positionto capitilise upon the increased interest thatwill be generated in an Olympic year.

DEVELOPMENT REPORT

Jenny CollinsDevelopmentManager

CLUB 102003 saw the release of theClub 10 scheme to all affiliatedclubs. An enormous amount ofwork was undertaken to ensurea consistent club affiliationscheme could be implementedacross Australia so that uponaffiliation, clubs wouldautomatically enter the Club 10accreditation scheme. This workincluded the development andadoption of national affiliationstandards across Australia, which is without a doubt anexcellent step forward for oursport. All State Associations areto be congratulated on theircontribution and continuedsupport to the nationalaffiliation scheme.

In addition, the new andconsistent national affiliationscheme required a range ofadministrative and managementchanges so that clubs couldnow re-affiliate prior to the endof the year. This allowsaffiliation benefits to be issuedand Club 10 Accreditationratings to be advised at the startof the new year.

In launching the Club 10scheme to the wider clubnetwork, Gymnastics Australiawas thankful to the AustralianSports Commission who alsoprovided additional “bonus”funding that allowed the sportto produce a National ClubAffiliation Kit. This kit providedthe means for distributing arange of promotional resourcesand benefits to clubs as they

Once again the year was extremely busy and rewarding for the Development Unit, which includes the two key areas of Education and Club 10. Both areas have continuedto grow and underpin all other areas of Federation work. My thanks and congratulationsto the National staffing team who have all committed enormous time and dedicationto their work areas – Nerine Cooper, Brad Edwards and Linda Pettit. Following is asummary report on the key activities undertaken within Education and Club 10.

affiliated. All elements were producedand designed to assist clubs in liftingtheir presentation to a professionallstandard now required across thesporting industry.

At the start of 2003 all clubs who hadbeen involved in the two year pilotscheme had the opportunity to applyfor Club 10 accreditation, based ontheir level of development andachievement of national benchmarks. It was extremely pleasing to see 78%of the clubs achieve Star 2 and aboveaccreditation, with 17% achievingaccreditation in the top two Starcategories. This is an outstandingachievement and ensures our sportwill continue to grow and develop asmember clubs continue to improvetheir management, operations andservice through undertaking the Club10 quality improvement program.

2003 also saw a key focus by NationalClub 10 Officers on the developmentof support resources. A special Club10 Officers Operations Manual wasreleased late December, via a webbased facility. This site provides Club10 Officers access to a large range oftemplates, example models andguidelines that are all tailoredspecifically to the sport of Gymnasticsand assist clubs in developing theirpolicies, procedures and resources. The site will continue to be developedthroughout 2004.

The Club 10 scheme has now becomewell entrenched into the sportsoperations and ensures that minimumbenchmarks and standards can beachieved by all clubs regardless oftheir location, size or the range ofGymsport programs they offer. The

Quality Improvement Checklist will becontinually monitored and updated toensure that industry standards andnew laws and/or amended laws areincorporated, ensuring Gymnasticsclubs are well prepared and canoperate successfully.

Congratulations and thanks must beextended to every club and StateClub 10 Officer who have workedextremely hard to develop and refineall elements of the Club 10 scheme. Thanks are extended to the Club 10Advisory Committee for their foresightand commitment to ensuring thesuccess and adoption of the nationalclub affiliation scheme.

EDUCATION

2003 was an extremely busy year inthe Education area with a particularfocus on enhancing and refiningadministration procedures associatedwith our National AccreditationCourses. A new national ‘CourseSanction’ scheme was introducedwhich involves all States submittingtheir annual course calendar and theFederation providing sanction for anynational accreditation course to bestaged. This process helps ensureaccredited presenters are utilised forall accreditation courses, allows anational education calendar to beproduced each year and provides thesport with valuable statistical data inrelation to course participationnumbers and up-take of TechnicalMembership. Thanks are extended to all StateAssociation staff who have workedclosely with our National EducationCoordinator, Linda Pettit, to refine thesystem and procedures utilised. There

Australian Championships

Throughout the year, sevenAustralian Championships weresuccessfully staged in variouslocations around Australia. Theseevents would not have beenpossible without the support of thehost State Associations and SportsManagement Committees(SMC)who assist enormously in thedelivery of the event.

Overall there was a 13% increasein the entries of the variousAustralian Championships. Thelocation of the RhythmicChampionships impacted on thenumber of entries to that event.

An international competition, theInternational CheerleadingChallenge was incorporated intothe National CheerleadingChampionships for the first time.Teams from USA and Australiacompeted in this successful event.Due to the success of this format, this event will stand alone nextyear with interest shown fromJapan and New Zealand.

The national participationprogram, AEROSkools continuesto give great support to SportAerobics with one whole daydevoted to this national schoolscompetition.

Following discussions with allSMCs and State Directors during2003, it was agreed that the eventprogram would be changed toimprove promotionalopportunities. This would also

minimise the number of actualevents during the year as this wastaking a toll on all volunteers andstate/national staff.

With the exception of Trampolinein 2004, the Olympic gymsports willstage a combined NationalChampionships in Sydney. This willbe the first time for many yearsthat all International and Levelscompetitors in these sports willcompete together. This event willbe known as the AustralianGymnastics Championships and willbe conducted in May 2004.

The remaining gymsports (SportsAcrobatics, Sport Aerobics,Cheerleading and Aussie Gymfest)will be combined into one eventalso in Sydney at the end ofSeptember. This new event will beknown as the Australian GymsportsSpectacular.

International Events

Two International events, CanberraCup and the Women’s InternationalLevels Challenge were held in 2003in conjunction with GymnasticsACT. Gymnastics Australia wouldlike to thank Gymnastics ACT andtheir event staff for allowing theseInternational events to be held inconjunction with their annual clubevent “Reach for the Stars”.

The Women’s International LevelsChallenge incorporating Australia,NZ and South Africa was held forthe first time. This was a greatsuccess as it gave our Level 7-10gymnasts a chance to represent

Australia and compete in front of ahome crowd. It has beenrecommended by the Women’s SMCthat this event become an annualevent to be held in conjunction withNationals Clubs in July 2004..

Once again the Canberra Cup provedto be a very important event for thedevelopment of Australia’s Junior Menand Women international athletes.Countries competing in 2003 wereChina, Japan, Canada, Switzerland,Germany and Wales.

PRESIDENTDon Bollard

EXECUTIVE DIRECTORKris Mathieson/Aaron Bloomfield

MEMBERSHIPGymnasts 27,647Technical Members 985Clubs 166

I take great pleasure to commence the 2003 annual report by publicly thanking our many volunteers thathave worked tirelessly during 2003. Gymnastics NSW has been largely shaped by the commitment of ourvolunteers and is eternally grateful for this commitment.

Management/Staff/SMC

After numerous years of dedicatedservice Peter Read stood down asPresident at the Annual General Meetingin June. Peter’s tireless dedication andservice to gymnastics will be longremembered and was appropriatelyrecognized through the award of LifeMembership. Don Bollard was proudlyelected as Peter’s successor and hasdemonstrated a similar commitment toNSW gymnastics. NSW also welcomedMs Helen Leys to the Board to fill a casualvacancy. Helen has a history within sportsadministration and her knowledge andexperience were welcome ingredientsto the already diverse skills base of theNSW board.

Adopting a new administrativeframework the beginning of 2003witnessed the introduction of thepositions of Sports Program Managerand Competition Coordinator. HelenColagiuri assumed the role of the StateSports Program Manager following aredefinition of her existing duties andRebecca Johnson was welcomed as theCompetition Coordinator. Thereclassification of the positions aimed todepartmentalise the Association, however it became apparent that theworkload of the Sports ProgramManager was too great for one personand the data entry requirement of thecompetition coordinator imposed asimilar burdensome workload. With theview to make the two positions morefunctional they were redistributed inSeptember, a move that saw Helenassume responsibil ity for theManagement and Competitionorganisation for MAG, WAG and RG andRebecca assuming congruentresponsibilities for ACRO, TRAMP, AERand GG.

To relieve the data entry requirementfor competitions and education, JamieSinko was a welcome addition to thestaff mix as the State Data Entry Officerin late July and Aaron Bloomfield was

employed in June as the Club 10 Officerfollowing the sad departure of JustinHayes and Sara Scott.

Following the appointment of a SportProgram Manager, the Association hasbeen extremely productive regarding thesports technical matters. To increasecommunication between the Associationand its members, highlights of SMCmeeting minutes commenced beingposted on the website, a technicalhandbook was produced for everygymsport and service level agreementswere drafted to clarify the responsibilitiesof SMC’s and the Association.

Major GymsportHighlights

During 2003 NSW athletes achievedoutstanding results in all gymsports. Themost noteworthy of these results includeAerobics Lauren Farry’s two world titlesat the ANAC and FISAF WorldChampionships , New South Walesawarded the Williamson Shield for thesecond consecutive year and NSW clubstaking out most National Clubs events.

Club 10 Update

Following a wonderful response 108 clubsin NSW were categorised under the Club10 scheme as star 2 or above followingthe 2003 audit. Of the 108 clubs 86 werecategorised as star 2, 15 were categorisedas star 3, three were categorised as star4 and New South Wales proudly hosts twostar 5 clubs.

Feedback from the participating clubssuggested that although the processis long the clubs could recognise thebenefits of Club 10 and a number ofclubs expressed interest to worktowards a star 4 rating following the2004 audit.

Level 1 Cheerleading and Level 2Trampoline Sports Courses wereincluded in the number of accreditationcourses that were offered in 2003 andKate Kinner and Theresa Knightsuccessfully attained level 1Kindergym Course Presenter Status.

In Closing

Gymnastics NSW is committed toproviding our clubs with the highestlevels of service and support. Ouremphasis upon the provision of thisservice will ensure that our memberclubs receive an even higher standardof service as we head into 2004.

Following the AGM in September,we welcomed new Board ofManagement members, DixieBlake (Treasurer) and GillianFurniss (Vice-Chairperson). TracieMorgan took on the position ofBoard Member Sport following theresignation of Karl Metcalfe. Thepositions of Board MemberFacilities and Board MemberDevelopment remain unfilled.Debbie Gill continued asChairperson and Linda Robertsoncontinued as Board MemberBusiness. Our Development Officer, SharonHartley, continued to lift the profileof gymnastics in the NT. She hasbeen keeping gymnastics inschools, and schools in the gym,and never misses an opportunityto take her displays to shoppingcentres, community events, andanywhere else she can.Aydee Read replaced TracieMorgan as Administration Officerfor GNT. The conscientious effortsof both these ladies in providingthe Board with up to date andmeaningful information on whichrational and informed decisionscan be made is much appreciated. The Sports ManagementCommittee, comprising theTechnical Directors for eachgymsport, has proved a successfulalternative to the TechnicalCommittees which representedonly one gymsport. Susie Andersonjoined the SMC as WAG TD. BruceWhittaker, Debbie Gill, LindaRobertson and Lorelei Brigdenstayed on as TDs for MAG, RG,GG and ACR respectively.

2003 was the first full year for Gymnastics Northern Territory under itsnew corporate structure. The Association has moved ahead with thedevelopment of a culture of cooperation between Board members andbetween the Board and staff. Common goals have been identified, resulting in a strategic plan to which all are committed.

Major GymsportHighlights

In 2003, NT had representatives atNational Championships for WAG,RG and ACR. Congratulations toKatie Strobel and Ashlea Beckett, our Sports Acrobatics Level 5Women’s Pair, for theirachievement of a bronze medal atNational Championships. In GG, our InterschoolCompetitions go from strength tostrength. This year we had 350primary school students competein the Alice Springs InterschoolCompetition.Despite AEROSkools not beingofficially launched in NT in 2003,Leanyer Primary School couldn’twait and have been running theprogram under the instruction ofPE teacher, Merryn Brown. Welldone.

Club 10 Update

Nerine Cooper, the NT Club 10Officer made two visits to NT in2003. Clubs are working towardsimproving, or at least maintainingtheir star rating. Of our eight clubsin NT, four are Star 3, three are Star2 and only one club is still at Star1.

In Closing

There are tough times ahead forGNT. We have come a long way inthe last two years, thanks to a lotof work from a small group ofpeople. External pressures aremaking it increasingly difficult forindividual clubs and even theAssociation to survive, let aloneprosper. Achievement of our goalswill be limited by our resources, both human and financial. A smallpopulation base remains ourbiggest impediment to success.

Gymnastics in Western Australia has had an outstanding year in all areas of operation. 2003 will be remembered for ourunprecedented success in the competition arena balanced with the delivery of a high level of service to our Affiliated Clubs, andthe achievement of small operating profit of $2,683 for the Association.

Without question the year’s highlights were the outstanding results of our Western Australian athletes, from the superb Bronzemedal of our Australian Women’s Team at World Championships, led by Allana Slater, to the selection of John Carroll in theAustralian Men’s team for World Championships (a first for WA since 1989), and the performances of our athletes at Nationaland other events.

Management/Staff/SMCEach of the disciplines was once againexpertly run by their own SMC. This yearhas seen the ongoing development of eachof the seven disciplines culminating in oneof the most successful competition periodsin the history of our sport. A special welldone must go to all State representativesin WA Gymnastic teams - gymnasts &officials - who proudly represented our stateat the National Championships and otherevents throughout the year.

Major Gymsport HighlightsCongratulations must go to ourInternational representatives; J.Carroll,M.Jozwiak and I.Greenwell (MAG); A.Slater, A.Lauren, D.Joura, and O.Vivian(WAG); C.Holloway, and K.Dolan (RG);L.Henville, M.Read, M.Davies, K. Gorman,H.Davies, S.Van Loenhout, A. Kane,C.Hayward, and C.Sargent (AER); and inInternational Women’s Levels N.Smith,J.Bolton, C.Keating, and K.Morgan.

Australian ChampionshipsMAG: in the Seniors J.Carroll took the AAsilver and gold on Pommels and Vault. TheU15 Team took the gold with M. Jozwiakgoing on to take gold in the AA andPommels, Rings, Vault and High BarWAG: WA returned with excellent resultsin both elite and levels. WA took out sevenof the ten gold on offer in the Senior andJunior International Divisions throughA.Slater, D.Joura, A.Lauren, and O.Vivian, and for the first time in six years ofcompetition WA won the Levels teammedal.RG: WA successfully hosted the RG NationalChampionships in July, and WA won 13gold in elite and levels divisions.AER: WA athletes won 12 gold, 3 silverand 2 bronze medals. Trudi Nurse won theNational Coach of the Year award withKieran Gorman winning National JuniorAthlete of the YearTRP: The team returned from Brisbane withsome solid team performances. With strongteam numbers there is certainly somethingto build on for the future.

ACRO: With a team of only twelveathletes a special congratulations is to goto K.Pudelek and C.Trigwell who won goldin the L7 Mixed Pairs.CHEERLEADING: The Perth AngelsCheerleaders returned home triumphant, completing a meritorious set of back-to-back victories (2002, 2003).GG: also continued to achieve at a highlevel. We saw the linking of gymnasticsand the arts through the introduction ofthe highly acclaimed Cirque deGymnastique, the successful annualGymFest event, the growth ofCheerleading, and the Wheel Team travelabroad on their first international trip in July.

At the WA Sports Federation’s Sport Starawards. Jo Richards and Nikolai Lapchinewon WA Coach of the Year, and KaronWilliams won WA Official of the Year.

Club 10 UpdateIn the membership area, we maintainedgood gymnast numbers despite thedecision of the PCYC not to affiliate. ThePCYC withdrawal has resulted in areduction in Club affiliations, and slightreduction in the Technical members.Notwithstanding, the strong membership, and range of events of offer has driven arecord number of participants atGymnastics WA events.

We have successfully launched the Club10 program to all affiliated Clubs and theprogram has been met with enthusiasm bythe majority of Clubs in WA.

In Closing2003 was an outstanding year in allareas of operation. It will beremembered in particular for theunprecedented success of our athleteson the International and Nationalstage and we can look forward withgreat optimism to building on thisoutstanding level of athleticperformance. Three other focus areasfor the future will be the furtherdevelopment of Clubs through theClub 10 program, continuedimprovement of the Association’sfinancial position, and the furtheringof our position to develop a dedicatedState gymnastics venue.

Thank you to the Clubs, Committees,Club Volunteers, Coaches, Judges,Athletes, staff, and all those in theRegional Associations for what hasbeen a very positive year. Gymnasticsis a great sport, and your support isappreciated in helping as manypeople as possible enjoy its qualities.Thank you also to our partners andmajor sponsors – the Department ofSport and Recreation, Healthway,WAIS, BHPBilliton; Woodside EnergyAustralia, Gymnastics Australia andChallenge Stadium.
