February Message from Board President Richard Stoll
We are starting February, the month of LOVE. I have written for three years
now how we LOVE the Tropics. It hasn’t changed. I still LOVE the Tropics. The
Board Members also LOVE the Tropics and work hard to make it the best park.
We need some help now. We have a lot of positions open that would take
the pressure off everyone and make the Tropics better.
We have gone two years without a Secretary on the Board. We are doing
the best we can, but having the position filled would take pressure off the Board.
It would add another person to give ideas to make the Tropics better. The same
for the open Board position.
There are several committees that need leadership: House (helping set up
for all meetings and events. Senior Citizens/City Hall Liaison (keeping touch with
what in Union City that is affecting Tropics Residents). Traffic/Safety (helping to
make the park a safe place for all residents). Disaster Preparedness (helping all
residents know how to be safe and what to do in case of an emergency). If you
are interested in filling one of these important committees contact a Board
member.
Some of the upcoming events are NEW, thanks to some residents asking for
an event then taking it on to make it the best. The BEST events are the ones
people really want and are not shy about making it a success.
We know the Park Residents have evolved over the years. More of you are
not retired, but still working. We understand some of you are not comfortable in
speaking English. There are a lot of people in the same situation, so form a group
and get involved. Everyone and every idea is important so let’s all get involved in
the LOVE of the Tropics.
DID YOU KNOW ??

Manager’s Corner for February 2019
New Year’s Resolutions to exercise and healthy food choices has been the choice this year for a
lot of us. The Fit over Fifty program has been great and hope you have tried out the new
machines in the exercise rooms. Looking forward to warmer weather and walking more as well.
Please wear light clothing and carry a flashlight when walking at night and stay to the side of
any main roads on these dark evenings.
Reminders: All outdoor Christmas decorations should be taken down by now and stored. In
accordance with Park Rules, guests are welcome for thirty days and if you have new occupants
or rent a room, you must register them at the office. Maintain your landscaping in between
showers - We receive a lot of compliments from prospective residents so thanking you in
advance for the good job most of you have done.
A big thank you to all of our residents for the cards, candy and home-baked goodies over the
holidays from all of the maintenance and office staff. Looking forward to a prosperous new
year for one and all.
Happy Valentine’s Day.
Nancy Payne
Resident Manager
Welcome to New Residents
MILLENNIUM MEMO Got Lint? At least one MHP resident did—and it didn’t turn out well. Madrone Mobile Estates is a MHP located across the street from a Millennium community in Morgan Hill, just outside San Jose. I mention this because last month, a home in Madrone burned to the ground. The cause of the fire? Overheated lint in the dryer vent. Five fire engines responded to the fire. The goal was to keep the fire from spreading, but that effort was delayed because of cars parked on the street in violation of Madrone’s Rules. There are a couple lessons here:
As I never tire of reminding you, many of our streets are Fire Lanes. If a fire like that happened in The Tropics, firemen might face a tough choice: either let your home burn, or smash through a few parked cars with their fire trucks.
Make sure you clean out your dryer vents every so often. I didn’t use to do that either—and I almost had a house fire as a result. Don’t take that chance!
See why we bug you about parking on the street? As for your fire risk…with Ash Wednesday coming up in March, perhaps you can give up your dryer lint for Lent? It’s On! It’s going to happen: Tropics vs. Hacienda Valley Mobile Estates in what I’m sure will be a riveting, hotly-contested Battle of the Bocce!
Hacienda—that’s our Park in Morgan Hill--issued the challenge and offered to host, Richard accepted on behalf of The Tropics, now we’re just trying to set a date. With the coveted Millennium Cup at stake, can you imagine the drama that will ensue? Richard is fired up, claiming that The Tropics will be “Throwin’ Balls & Takin’ Names.” I just hope that the losing team remembers the rule: “There’s No Crying in Bocce.”
More News…
Kudos to Larry Anderson (403 Tropicana) for his “fantastic light display during the holidays,” and for opening his home to view his indoor displays. Thanks, Larry!
It is with great sadness that we report that Mama Turkey was gobbled up by a speeding driver, leaving the two baby turkeys orphans. One can only ask: When will the carnage end? Please SLOW DOWN before any more Tropics lives are lost.
Next month we hope to announce SPARC’s Spring Events: fairs, classes, maybe even a Free Smoke Detector event. Stay Tuned!
Practice your bocce, watch your lint…and have a great 2019! George Turk

We need people to watch each street. A new officer is in charge from the police department. She would like to get a flyer for all residents. She wants people to come to the general meeting to find out more. January Breakfast was discussed, and the board decided to let the Coffee Club decide the menu.

Happiest of New Year’s to each and all!! All attending The Tropics’ New Year’s celebration dinner enjoyed a truly WOOP-TE-DOO event! From the catered prime rib to the fantastic prizes, this party raised the bar for Tropics’ events which future generations of residents must strive mightily to match! Deserved thank you’s to all who came, all who helped, and especially the ‘producers and directors’ Barry and Debbie Lependorf and Jerry and Barbara Garcia, and their families who gave so generously of their time.

And thanks to all who help to keep Union City clean and green.
What’s wi th al l the bi ns at our di nner events!?
We are helping our environment by reducing our landfill garbage.
We are separating composting material from landfill garbage.
Paper plates, napkins, cups and FOOD SCRAPS are compostable.
Plastic, foil, and anything else is landfill garbage.
The Board is considering eliminating individual coffee creamers, butter
cups, mayonnaise containers, etc., which are messy to open and not
recyclable, with a condiment table and dispensers.
We have three waste systems i n the park
GREEN WASTE BIN – by the car wash:
This is for garden cuttings and cut up tree branches. Properly-bagged paper
and food scraps are also allowed. This is what we have been sorting out at
our dinners.
What happens to the contents of the green bin?
It is mixed with other food waste, spread out in a field, and eventually may
be returned to us as free compost to enrich our gardens.
RECYCLING BINS – large brown bins at each household:
Clean paper, cardboard, cans, glass containers and milk cartons are
acceptable. Also, plastic bags and shredded paper may be secured in a clear
plastic bag.
What happens to the contents of the brown bins?
They are picked up by Tri-Ced and brought to the Fremont Transfer Station
where they are sorted for recycling.
LANDFILL BINS – a blue bin at each household:
The less you put into this bin the better for the environment.
Hold kitchen scraps in milk cartons and toss in GREEN BIN on your walk.
Schedule a free, semi-annual BULKY PICKUP for large items.
Donate useable items for curbside pickup by a non-profit agency.
What happens to the contents of the blue bins?
They are currently shipped to a landfill near Livermore. When this fills, a
new site will have to be found, and our garbage bills will certainly rise.
