“The soul that sees its own nothingness and knows that its whole good is to be found in the Creator forsakes itself and all its powers and all other creatures and immerses itself wholly in Him, directing all its operations to-wards Him and never alienating itself from Him, for it realizes that in Him it can find all goodness and perfect happiness. Through this vision of love, increasing from day to day, the soul is so transformed into God that it cannot think or understand or love or remember any-thing but God and the things of God. Itself and other crea-tures it sees only in God, itself and others it remembers only in God. Thus it is like a man who dives into the sea and swims under water: all he can see and touch is water and the things in the water, while, as for anything outside the water, he can neither see it nor touch it nor feel it. If the things outside the water are reflected in it, then he can see them, but only ijn the water as they look in the water, and not in any other way. This is the true and proper way of delighting in oneself and all other crea-tures, and it can never lead to error, because, being nec-essarily always governed by God’s ordinanace, it cannot lead to any desire for anything outside of God, because all the activity takes place within God and remains within Him.” (68)

RECONCILED DIVERSITY A few years ago, during Rome’s quiet summer, Pope Fran-cis took a day off to visit privately with some old friends, whose identity took Catholic Italy by surprise: Evangelical Prot-estants. They welcomed Francis to their Pentecostal Church of Reconciliation, where Francis asked pardon for Catholic perse-cutions and celebrated the Holy Spirit’s “pentecostal work.” Unlike Satan, declared Francis, who creates division among God’s children, the Holy Spirit creates a diversity rich and beautiful. And unity; not uniformity, Francis specified, but unity in diversity. Francis named the Spirit’s gift “reconciled diversity.” Pentecost’s rich treasury of scriptural readings, for Saturday’s vigil and Sunday’s morning liturgy, traces the Holy Spirit’s work from creation’s beginning, through Jesus’ resur-rection, into the church’s earliest days, now into our days. Kin-dled in our hearts, the Spirit’s gentle fire is ours to share gen-erously, even with those most strikingly different from us. All hearts are Spirit-warmed by reconciled diversity. Copyright © J. DIVERSIDAD RECONCILIADA Hace algunos años, durante un verano tranquilo en Roma, el Papa Francisco tomó un día de descanso para pasar un tiempo en privado con algunos viejos amigos, cuyas identidades tomaron por sorpresa a los católicos italianos: protestantes evangélicos. Ellos dieron la bienve-nida a Francisco a su iglesia pentecostal de la reconcilia-ción, donde Francisco pidió perdón por las persecuciones católicas y celebró “la obra pentecostal” del Espíritu Santo. Francisco declaró que Satanás crea divi-sión en medio de los hijos de Dios, pero el Espíritu Santo crea una diversidad rica y hermosa. Y unidad, pero no uni-formidad, Francisco especificó, sino unidad en la diversi-dad. Francisco nombró el don del Espíritu Santo “diversidad reconciliada”. ¿SABE USTED? Hable con sus hijos sobre la delgada línea entre la obediencia y la protección. DidYouKnow? Talk to your children about the fine line between obedience and protection. Chil-dren learn from an early age that adults are figures of authority — teachers, police officers, bus drivers, baby-sitters. We need our children to listen to the people who are in charge of them, but this message must be communicated so that children know it’s okay to stick up for themselves too. Adult predators may try to use their authority to gain control over their victims. Chil-dren should know that when it comes to private parts, secrets, and things that seem dangerous or wrong, they shouldn’t worry about disobeying the adult in charge, and instead talk to a trusted adult or a parent.
