2nd Grade Goes to the Circus!

On Tuesday, April 9, second grade enjoyed a field trip to the Jaffa Circus in Altoona. They would like to thank our local Shriners Organization for donating the tickets, and the PTG for their contribution to the field trip. A great time was had by all! Pictured below are Zane Zemlock and his mom (Rebecca). Zane was the lucky winner of the intermission drawing for season passes to DelGrosso Park.

Change is coming! • Box Tops is going digital… there will not be Box Tops to clip in the future.

Any clipped Tops can still be redeemed up to their expiration date. • The main difference is how schools will earn – instead of clipping, checking

expirations dates, bundling and submitting, all Box Tops will be earned digitally via receipt scan. You’ll now download the new and improved, user-friendly Box Tops app, register and select a school, and then scan an eligible receipt containing Box Tops products.

• Changes will start to be seen around June 2019

Soak Up Some Summer Fun With Evergreen After School Club!

FREE 6 Week Summer Program: 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Monday-Thursday June 10-July 3 August 5-15

Members within the district receive bus transportation, breakfast, and lunch. (There will be no van transportation during our summer program.)

Summer Program Includes: *Academically enriching activities designed to help prevent summer learning loss.

*Social recreation—air hockey, iPads, board games, video games, outside activities *Health & fitness—flag football, basketball, baseball, dodgeball, and other sports!

*Arts & crafts, and a field trip to the Pittsburgh National Aviary! *LOTS OF FUN!!!

Evergreen After School Club at Penns Manor Elementary School has chosen Blake Mapes as Student of the Month for March 2019. Blake is in 5th grade. Blake’s favorite part of Club is Project Learn. He also enjoys social recreation and physical activity time. Outside of Club, Blake enjoys drawing, playing, video games and going outside. Blake was chosen by staff because he embodies the characteristics that Club seeks to instill in its members. He attends Club regularly and follows Club rules. Blake is respectful of staff and always tries his best in all Club activities.

Title I Family Fun Day Wednesday May 22, 2019

The annual Penns Manor Title I Family Fun Day will take place at Duman Lake Country Park.

All participating students must ride their regular morning bus to school. Parents should go directly to

Duman Lake Park. Lunch will be served. Students will be released to their parents following the closing activities at approximately 2:15 pm.

To attend the Title I Family Fun Day, please fill out the bottom portion of the form available from your child’s Title I teacher and return the form by May 3, 2019.

In April, our students participated in the Jump Rope For Heart event, sponsored by the American Heart Association.

Our students raised a total of $1,471!

The culminating activity was held on April 5 when students participated in a variety of games and relays in the elementary gym. Thank you to our very generous Penns Manor families for their support!

MTSS Update

Two years ago the Penns Manor Area School District made the decision to move to a MTSS framework. MTSS is an acronym for Multi Tiered Systems of Support. This system allows school teachers and staff to provide support to all students at every level of their development. We continuously monitor our progress towards achieving the annual goals set by the MTSS implementation team. Continuous improvement and adjustments are made in this supportive framework and student growth is the ultimate goal. For the 2019 - 2020 school year we have outlined our goals and updates to the system. We will be expanding the Fundations program into the third grade. Fundations is a research-based approach to allow K-3 teachers to present a carefully structured reading and spelling curriculum using multisensory techniques. Fundations helps students thoroughly learn the foundational skills, and significantly supports reading, writing, speaking, and language standards. The program addresses all five areas of reading instruction with an emphasis on systematic phonics and word structure. We will also be expanding the DIBELS testing to grades four and five. DIBELS is also an acronym that stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. The assessment allows teachers to pinpoint reading skills that students are missing. We are then able to provide interventions to all students at all grade levels that is specific to their skill deficits. This past school year our third grade was a part of the MTSS Writing Series sponsored by the Department of Education. Our plan is to expand what we have learned this year to grades four and five next year. Our third grade students have made great progress in writing. We have been measuring their total words written and words spelled correctly in their writing assessments. Our teachers and staff will continue to be trained and supported in the curricular changes we are making. We will have professional development scheduled at the end of the school year, during the summer months, at the beginning of the school year, and throughout the 2019 -2020 school year. We are also continuing to promote the “Growth Mindset” with our school board, administrators, teachers, staff, students, and parents. Do you have a growth mindset?

“The April Foolers”

On Wednesday March 27 and Thursday March 28, Mr. Cowles’ 3rd grade class performed “The April Foolers” in front of family, friends and fellow students. The theme of the play taught the students and audience that while it is okay to fool around and have fun on April Fool’s Day, some “jokes” can be hurtful. The students gave three performances using different students in each role, giving everyone in the class an opportunity to participate. The students did an excellent job and were very entertaining.
