Niagara on the Move will help you to increase your daily physical activity and lead to a healthier lifestyle for you and your family. Visit our website to learn more about using motivating tools such as a pedometer and for lots of fun activities to get you moving every day.

Pedometer FAQsWhat is a Pedometer? It’s a simple device that counts the steps you take each day. It is about the size of a pager. Clip it onto your belt or waistband directly above your hip.

Why should I wear one?A pedometer is a great way to track your daily physical activity and inspire yourself to get moving on a day when you’ve been sedentary.

I’ve got one…now what?Put it on and wear it all day, every day. Record your step count each day for a week. Calculate your daily average to get your start point.

Set goals to gradually increase your daily average over several weeks. You may consider increasing your daily average by 500 steps each week. Most healthy adults should aim for 10,000 steps per day.

Pedometers are available through Heart Niagara. Please visit www.heartniagara.com or call 905-358-5552 for more details.

Look For I t . . . . .62893598

It has been conclusively established that the acute phase of coronary heart disease, (leading to blocked arteries, heart attacks, and heart surgery in adults) begins in adolescents when arterial plaque formations begin silently in the arterial walls of those individuals at increased risk. Canadian guidelines recommend testing all twenty year olds who have a positive family history of premature coronary heart disease* or who are smokers or who have problems with blood sugar, or blood pressure, or blood cholesterol, or abdominal obesity.

Yet few twenty year old Canadians are aware of these recommendations or attend a health professional who can make them so aware. The only Canadians that are 100% available for assessment of increased risk of coronary heart disease are those, a few years younger, which are still in school. The Healthy Heart Secondary School Program designed in 1987 by Heart Niagara to investigate possible increase in coronary heart disease risk among all Niagara adolescents. And to notify, and inform, those individuals, and their parents, of the measures to be taken to prevent its progression into the adult years thus preventing Coronary Artery Disease.

Dr. Stafford Dobbin, Medical Director Healthy Heart Schools’ Program* A male parent or grandparent with angina, heart attack, angioplasty, or arterial surgery before 55 – female before 65

TOP 10TAKE-HOMEMESSAGES

• Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death among adults in North America.

• A combination of early access, early CPR, early defibrillation and early advanced care can save as many as one-third to one-half of sudden cardiac arrest victims in treatable heart rhythms.

• The shorter the time from collapse to defibrillation, the better the chances of survival.

• Anyone who has a duty to respond to victims of sudden cardiac arrest should be trained and equipped with a defibrillator.

• Communities that implement Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) programs must abide by provincial laws and regulations, organizations that adopt AED programs are at the lowest risk of liability.

• It is important for AED programs to have a Medical Director.

• AEDS are simple to use; training takes about two to four hours and established training programs are readily available.

• Creating public awareness and support for your community AED program requires teamwork, but is well worth the effort.

• Finding funding for your AED program may be easier than you think.

• Well-planned AED programs are generally cost-effective, especially when compared with other public health initiatives.

A well run company runs well and has a higher morale which makes it enjoyable to go to work and creates loyalty. Likewise, workplace health committees have a role to play in making a workplace a better place. Reducing stress, depression and sick time makes for a more enjoyable workplace. Simply put everything people do to improve their good HDL cholesterol (e.g., achieve healthy weights, get to target with cholesterols, prevent or manage diabetes, increase physical activity, quit smoking and prevent or manage high blood pressure) achieves higher standard of health and morale in the workplace.

Companies should call Heart Niagara at 905-358-5552 and register for the Workplace Cardiovascular Risk Awareness Program.

physicAl ActivityIt’s easy to see the health benefits of physical activity but keeping yourself motivated and sticking to an exercise program can be a challenge. You may experience some barriers to becoming physically active. Spend time planning how to meet your activity goals.

i don’t have enough time. If finding 30 minutes for an activity break each day is tough, try breaking it into shorter periods. Three ten-minute sessions may be more manageable for you.

i don’t have enough energy.Schedule activity for when you feel most energetic. Try first thing in the morning, on your lunch break or just after dinner. Once you start to move you will likely feel more alert. Being inactive can actually make you feel tired.

i get bored with physical activity.Switch between several different walking routes to ease boredom. Bring along a friend or neighbour to make a walk a social outing. Participate in a variety of physical activities to keep things interesting.

it’s too expensive. You don’t need to join a gym or buy expensive equipment to be active. Walking is great exercise and it’s free! You could also look for inexpensive classes offered through your municipal parks and recreation department.

Family timeGetting together for afamily meal everynight will pay off inmany ways

Studies show that families who sit down to regular meals together tend to eat better.

Like most Canadians, you’re probably juggling work and family life, leaving littletime to cook and eat together.

Here are some simple ways to plan ahead to make your meals heart healthy.

I don’t have time to cook …

• Prepare foods ahead of time. While making one meal, slice extra onions, dice extrapeppers, cook extra brown rice or whole-wheat noodles and marinate meat so thatthey’re ready to use for the next night’s meal.

•Take short cuts. Use pre-cut vegetables, bagged salads, pre-sliced meat and pre-grated cheese.

•Make double batches of your favourite recipes on weekends and freeze them. Simplydefrost, heat and serve for an instant supper during the busy week.

•While roasting one meal in the oven, throw in some sweet potatoes, beets andsquash in another roasting pan. When cooked, cool and store the roasted vegetablesin the fridge for the next night’s meal.

Cook stews, soups and casseroles in a crock pot. The food will stay heated and beready to eat when family members arrive home.

We don’t eat meals together …

•Plan dinner around the day’s schedule. On activity nights, cook a casserole in thecrock pot (started in the morning), which will be ready when everyone gets home.Use healthy snacks such as single-serve yogurts, cottage cheese, cheese sticks, home-made oatmeal cookies, pre-cut vegetables and fruit to calm the munchies before dinner.

•Set menu themes to encourage everyone to be home for the meal. Spaghetti andmeatball Tuesdays, home-made pizza Fridays, Sunday pancake brunches are just someideas.

•Let each member of your family take turns choosing their favourite recipe for dinner. Get children involved in the cooking. If they make it, they’re bound to eat it.

•Plan family picnics and outings so that you can all sit down and eat together. Takethis opportunity to catch up on the day’s events and news with the whole family.

•Reassess your family’s schedule. If you’re out most nights of the week, maybe cut-ting back on one or two activities will allow you to spend more time eating and beingtogether.
