CHAIRMAN’S VIEW

1www.suffolkopenstudios.org

View from the Chair

On behalf of all participating artists Iextend a warm welcome to OpenStudios 2017. To those who are curiousabout art and artists, Suffolk OpenStudios is an opportunity to see theextraordinary artistic talent there is herein the beautiful county of Suffolk.

This is my first year as Chairwoman andI look forward to supporting the artists, who create such diverse and

exceptional work. The Open Studios is providing you with anopportunity to connect with the artists, their work, and observingthe creation of work in progress. It is encouraging to see so manyof you so inspired by their creativity that you travel from studio tostudio to see the next joyful artworks.

You will find a wide and wonderful range of disciplines expressedin paintings, photographs, collage, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, glassware and mosaics. There are so many different media toexplore.

Because there are so many studios to visit we plan exhibitions insome areas so that you can become familiar with the artists' workbeforehand. We have members showing in the Apex, Bury StEdmunds this 16th May-26th June. Artists in areas of the countygroup together and create ‘Hubs’ during Open Studios, either byshowing in one venue/studio, as they live in remote areas, or bysharing as a group with similar views on their work. The ‘Trails’ area group of artists in one area, who open on the same weekendsand can therefore become a trail of studios to see.

Using your directory, you can see where the Trails are for you toexplore, finding a string of nearby studios, stopping at intriguingshops and pubs on the way as you travel through the countryside.

Art is for all and it is a vital part of our lives. By connecting with theartists we can all share the creative process at each studio. TheSuffolk Open Studios makes art accessible, where you can learnabout the processes involved. You are welcome to purchase theirwork, which is always great value.

Susie Joyce, Chairwoman.

“To create art you need the Hand, the Eye, and the Heart.”

Artists Hubs

6

In addition to individual artist’s Open Studios, Hubs involve SuffolkOpen Studios members getting together at one location to showvisitors artwork in progress and completed pieces of their work.Sometimes the group of artists will share common interests andexhibiting their work together enriches the visitor’s experience.Sometimes the artist’s own studios are in remote locations and itreduces visitor travel time if they collaborate in this way. Visitors to ahub will enjoy great variety and talent all in one place.

This year there are the following Hub studios:

Stour Studio, Clare (see page 14)

Creative Stitch, Ipswich (see page 36)

ArT 5 Hub, Felixstowe (see page 39)

Although metal can be 'encouraged' totake whatever form we have the skill &tools to create, my favourite way to workis organically, allowing the pieces to formthemselves. This results in unique, individual pieces. I love both crystals &patination & either or both of these canoften be found in my work.

Head towards Five Bells Public House off village green and continue past Nether Hall, towards the end of the village. Turn left into Peacocks Close, then take the first right.Follow the road to the end of the cul de sac and Number 55 will be clearly marked.

4 Ailsa lynWatercolour

My inspiration is the East Anglianlandscape from town to coast. I love theimmediacy and spontaneity ofwatercolour and the way it begs to betamed. Combining water-based media onhand-painted paper as collage takes mywork in a more abstract direction andallows me to add texture and structure tomy work. Experimentation with both, isevident in my paintings, and original, individual hand-painted cards.

My work draws inspiration fromtraditional, classic shapes recreated in acontemporary style. Each piece isindividually hand thrown and focuses onits simplicity in form, colour and style. Myceramics are unique emphasising clarityof lines created with the wheel and theclay, highlighted by sympathetic glazesand lustres. My main medium isporcelain due to the delicate forms youcan create with this material.

Some of my glass pieces are handblown lead crystal and some made fromwindow/bottle glass. I really enjoy up-cycling and making new creations out ofwaste material and giving it a new formof life by fusing and slumping in a kiln. I run 'recycled glass workshops' in mystudio which will be operating over theopen studios weekends.
