to York Open Studios™ 2021, a little later in the year than usual but we hope you will think it’s been worth the wait. In this our 20th anniversary year we are delighted to return with nearly 150 local artists and makers showing in over 90 different studios and workplaces.
Over two weekends we invite you to meet some of York’s most talented artists. Chat to them in person about their processes, look around the places where they work, choose a unique piece of art to take home. Venues range from small studios in the artists’ homes to large commercial workshops and often offer access to special places not usually open to the public, and of course what makes York Open Studios™ different from so many other exhibitions is that at every venue you will find the makers themselves ready to welcome you and show you around.
York Open Studios™ is a self-funded non-profit organisation; the cancellation of the 2020 event at only a month’s notice could easily have meant the end of YOS, so we want to thank all our artists and volunteers for their support, loyalty and willingness to adapt to our new circumstances. We particularly want to thank those who have made financial donations to ensure our survival, as well as the marvellous members of the public who contributed so generously to our GoFundMe appeal. Last but not least we thank you, the visitors, for supporting and encouraging us.
We hope you enjoy York Open Studios 2021.
The York Open Studios Committee Jo Bagshaw, Kate Buckley, Dave Coleman, Jane Duke, Claire Miller, Elena Panina and Beccy Ridsdel

IF YOU ARE AN ARTIST LIVING OR WORKING WITHIN 10 MILES OF YORK WHO WOULD LIKE TO TAKE PART IN 2022, LOOK OUT FOR OUR CALL FOR ARTISTS IN THE
SUMMER. APPLICATIONS OPEN IN JULY AND SELECTION TAKES PLACE IN SEPTEMBER.
PLAN YOUR VISIT
As always our line-up reflects the wonderful variety of artists in York, showcasing a huge range of media and styles. All the artists taking part are selected by an inde-pendent panel who assess applications based on the images and artist statements submitted. For our 2021 event our selectors were Michael and Sarah Fram (Leaping Hare Gallery), Lotte Inch (Lotte Inch Gallery) and June Russell (printmaker) and we would like to express our appreciation for their conscientious contribution.
To make the most of the event, we recommend using this guide to help plan your weekends. Each artist has a sequential venue number and a map reference which can be found in the index and on each artist listing. These will help you identify the artists’ locations on the online map or on the printed map available at many loca-tions in the city. Where several artists are sharing a single venue, you will find their entries follow each other in the directory. Please note some venue numbers are missing from the sequence where artists have had to withdraw following our date change. There is also a clickable interactive map on our website which can tell you which studios are near your location when you are out on the trail. Please visit our website for more information about each artist, including biographies, additional images and helpful directions to their studios and, in these changing times, please remember to check online for any updates to opening arrangements.
OUR ARTISTS
This year we again welcome students representing York College. We are also pleased to present three multi-media installations from Francesca King, Lu Mason and Katie Greenbrown and Peter Roman, all of whom have been awarded bursaries to enable them to take part. HATTIE RYMER OPEN STUDIO 2019

FOR FURTHER DETAILS AND EVENT UPDATES VISIT OUR WEBSITE YORKOPENSTUDIOS.CO.UK
When you are visiting studios, look out for our bright yellow signage pointing you the right way and balloons mark-ing the venues. Some studios are quite hidden away! (York Open Studios has become an important highlight of the York festival calendar and we are delighted to see it celebrated around the city, but please note that only the artists and venues listed in this directory are part of the event.)
