    Just like the rest of the world, the MENA region is growing with

    need for mass transport in all its forms and shapes.

    Mega projects are not once that could be taken lightly as

    preparation for such events that goes on for years were the eventsjust takes place over hours, days or weeks.

    Introduction

    One of the largest events that takes place every 4 years is the

    Football world cup FIFA, where Qatar Doha was awarded as the

    host city for 2022 by the leadership of HH Sheikh Hamad bin

    Khalifa Al Thani, President of Qatar.

    This brings us to this summit where UITP and Mowasalat have

    signed an agreement to host every two years till 2022 so that

    experts from all over the world can share their experience.

    This first event will focus on intelligent traffic solutions as todays

    world cannot go without intelligent solutions.

    In the next coming days you all will also share your experience in

    managing public transport for large event in every aspect, locally

    and internationally.

    UITP MENA Division

    UITP has had a presence in the MENA region with members

    since the 1950s and today has the largest network of public

    transport professionals in the world. UITP recognized the

    importance of having permanent office in the MENA region

    according to the globalization planof the association.

    A steering committee was formed in Bahrain, October

    2003 that launched the foundation of the Middle-East and

    North Africa (MENA) Division.

    The MENA Division was then formed in June 2005 at the

    56thUITP World Congress in Rome, Italy.

    Mowasalat

    Mowasalat, popularly known as the The Transport Company in

    Qatar, started its activities by providing land transport services

    and solutions in October 2004. Mowasalat has a broad Mission of

    being a regional leader in the provision of integrated ground

    transport services.

    Mowasalat has widened its reach by offering several solutions to

    fulfill the variety of requirements by providing Airport Taxi,

    Standard Taxi, VIP Limousine, Standard Limousine, Public Bus

    1) It has launched and dramatically grown its service operationsin line with the needs of one of the fastest expanding

    2) It has elevated the service standards of previously existingmodes of transport and re-introduced a competitive environmentback into the market; and

    Mowasalat - Achievements

    Taxi & limousine: Althoughit has been able in a short period oftime to roll-out a whole fleet of 1,700 taxis, it recognizes that anopportunity to expand its fleet still further exists. It has,therefore, successfully launched a franchise program that has

    already placed an additional 1,000 taxis on the road andreintroduced healthy private competition to market.

    Mass Transit: Mowasalat has successfully rolled out andoperated over 1,450 buses to serve schools in Qatar.Mowasalats substantial fleet of buses has helped Qatarsreputation reach ever-greater heights. In 2009, a 4.8km-longconvoy of 325 Karwa school buses travelled a stretch of 5km onthe Shahaniya- Dukhan highway, some 56km from Doha,shattering the previous record of 119 buses, created in Germanyearlier that year.

    Mowasalat - Achievements

    KTC: The training and testing center has emerged from being asupporting unit for taxi and bus services to become acommercial market leader for driver training in Qatar. In lessthan 5 years, it has captured 40% of the driver training market,

    while still serving the training needs of other Mowasalat businessunits

    Karwa Service Unit: In less than two years, KSU has evolvedfrom a division of Mass Transit with the sole purpose ofmaintaining Mass Transit buses into a stand-alone business uniton the verge of servicing all types of buses, Mowasalat and non-Mowasalat clients, as well as selling spare parts and Karwabuses. To date, Karwa buses have been sold to several Qatarientities, and 50 buses have even been sold in Eritrea.

    Expansion Projects- Ain Khalid Bus Hub

    The Project is being designed toConstruct Bus Hub andShowroom for karwa brandBusses.

    The bus Hub will haveBasement floor plus groundfloor and first floor.

    Estimated Project duration willbe approximately 24 months.

    The Bus Hub Project shall consist of multipurpose maintenance facilities forMowasalat busses at the ground floor and Bus parking's in the basement &first floor level of the building.

    Expansion Projects- Satellite Bus Stations

    Mowasalat is planning three satellite busstations in Al Khor, Al Wakra and AinKhalid, in addition to the main busterminal in Al Ghanim.

    Doha city will have a state-of-the-art busstation that will come along with themetro and rail projects.

    The future plan is to set up a new busstation in the city close to the metro andrail stations. Besides a main bus terminal,there will be more satellite stations inDoha and other cities.

    Public Transport & Large Events

    Large events are taking place more and more in cities all around the world

    such as sports, culture, religious, business, and many more. Events very

    in size of participants from few thousands to millions but one thing they all

    have in comment, numbers are increasing. Public Transport is the mostimportant aspect of large events.

    During the Olympic Games in Athens (Greece) in 2004, 22 million passengersjourneys were made to/from the Olympic venues, 74% of which using publictransport.

    During the Rugby World Cup in Paris (France) in 2007 about 3 million extra publictransport passenger journeys were generated.

    The Music festival in Werchter (Belgium) welcomes about 300.000 spectators everyyear in a small rural village of 3.200 inhabitants. The public transport service targetis 40% of those visitors.

    Public Transport & Large Events MENA

    Every year more than 3,000,000 Muslims rush to Makah to practice Hajj. Thegovernment of KSA arrange proper mass transport system with METRO and busesand no small vehicles are allowed.

    Dubai take the challenge in hosting the IMF in 2003 with more than 50.000

    participants

    Qatar successfully hosted the Asian Games in 2006 as for the first time a largeevent in Doha with more than 100,000 participants.

    Large Events & City Improvement

    Large events cannot take place without a proper network of Public

    Transport systems. More and more cities in the MENA region are

    progressing with the development in the infrastructure and Public

    Transport is not left behind from all this urbanization. The benefits of a

    large event for the host city may include: The demonstration of the efficiency of the organization of the city/region

    and especially its public transport network

    An impetus for the economic development of the area and the publictransport infrastructure in the middle/ long term

    The chance to raise the image of the city in the competition for

    investments and qualified work force

    The development of a feeling of common purpose among citizens
