Willsbridge Bergerac Race 1 st Open 1 st SE Section Dave and Lisa Waterhouse from Portsmouth with “Lone Soldier” Bergerac was the Classic’s last old bird race of the season with another good entry of 990 birds sent by 185 members. With four other organisations on board with us, the total birdage was approximately 1,450. All prospects looked good the evening before for a Friday liberation and we were only waiting for dawn to rise, but unfortunately when it did it was to show full cloud cover and mist likened to pea soup. It was forecast to clear quite soon with the north westerly winds blowing, but as the winds were light this didn’t happen in time to liberate early enough. Next morning the site weather was completely different and Nigel liberated the whole consignment of pigeons at 6.05am with the birds clearing well and heading north. The winds up through France were west north westerly but light. Thank you to everyone concerned at the marking stations, as I know we were a bit thin on the ground due to people waiting for their Tarbes birds. The race turned out to be very testing but one gallant pigeon, who was determined to make it home on the day belongs to our winners Dave & Lisa Waterhouse from Portsmouth. 1 st Open 1 st SE Section. Dave and Lisa have been flying a cracking pigeon for the last few seasons and this win is truly deserved to a lovely couple. Dave races with the Channel Flying Club and only flies a small team of pigeons and the saying “quality not quantity” certainly rings true in Dave’s case. “Lone Soldier” as his is now named is a 3 year old blue cock and is bred from my good pair which is called “The Ace Pair” bred by Jacob Poortvliet. He was sent sitting 10 day eggs. Feeding consists of Verse Laga Super Widowhood as much as needed and peanuts every afternoon. Three weeks previous he was 2 nd Club, 13 th Solent Federation from the new race point Nort- Sur-Erdre.

Willsbridge Bergerac Race

1st Open 1

st SE Section

Dave and Lisa Waterhouse from Portsmouth

with “Lone Soldier” Bergerac was the Classic’s last old bird race of the season with another good entry of 990

birds sent by 185 members. With four other organisations on board with us, the total birdage

was approximately 1,450.

All prospects looked good the evening before for a Friday liberation and we were only waiting

for dawn to rise, but unfortunately when it did it was to show full cloud cover and mist likened

to pea soup. It was forecast to clear quite soon with the north westerly winds blowing, but as

the winds were light this didn’t happen in time to liberate early enough.

Next morning the site weather was completely different and Nigel liberated the whole

consignment of pigeons at 6.05am with the birds clearing well and heading north. The winds

up through France were west north westerly but light.

Thank you to everyone concerned at the marking stations, as I know we were a bit thin on the

ground due to people waiting for their Tarbes birds.

The race turned out to be very testing but one gallant pigeon, who was determined to make it

home on the day belongs to our winners Dave & Lisa Waterhouse from Portsmouth. 1st

Open 1st SE Section. Dave and Lisa have been flying a cracking pigeon for the last few

seasons and this win is truly deserved to a lovely couple. Dave races with the Channel Flying

Club and only flies a small team of pigeons and the saying “quality not quantity” certainly

rings true in Dave’s case.

“Lone Soldier” as his is now named is a 3 year old blue cock and is bred from my good pair

which is called “The Ace Pair” bred by Jacob Poortvliet. He was sent sitting 10 day eggs.

Feeding consists of Verse Laga Super Widowhood as much as needed and peanuts every

afternoon.

Three weeks previous he was 2nd

Club, 13th Solent Federation from the new race point Nort-

Sur-Erdre.

2nd

, 3rd

& 9th

Open 1st, 2

nd & 5

th NW Section are Colin, Henry, John & Leigh Preece

(Preece Brothers & Sons) from Abertillery. What a fantastic performance put in by this

family with the wind totally against them (5 pigeons verified so far).

1st bird is a Gwasted Mottle, a two year old mottle blue roundabout cock. He has had a few

minor positions in the BICC and WSR National before today. This was his fourth channel race

of the season with his last race 300 miles with the WSR National where he was our second

bird home.

He is a Lefrabre/Dhaenen and contains all the best of our channel family. His sire is a top

stock cock being the sire of numerous top racers for us up to 600 miles and is the nest mate to

Gwasted Mon Mome our Queens Cup winning cock. The dam was lent to us by good friend

Geoff Davies, containing all the best of his old Lefrabre/Dhaenen family. She bred a number

of top birds for Geoff before he lent her to us a few years ago. Since we have had her she has

bred numerous top racers for us. She is now 13 years old and he has been unable to get her

back from us. (Thanks Geoff).

The 2nd

bird is a 2 year old dark Deweerdt roundabout cock. This was his first top result as lst

year he snapped his end flight and was only lightly raced. This year he has had four channel

races, his last race was from Poitiers with the BICC some 400 miles to us where in a tough

race he was up with our leading birds.

His sire was a gift to us from Andy Gregson from his number 1 pair of Deweerdts. The Dam

was another Deweerdt gift from our good friends Geoff and Catherine Cooper, being a direct

daughter of their champion Wriggler paired to a daughter off Farm Boy. We would like to

thank both Andy and Geoff for these gifts.

Our 3rd

bird is a 3 year old blue roundabout cock Gwasted Rowens Lad. He is a son of our

number 1 grizzle stock cock and to High a daughter of One Legs and winner of 2nd

and 8th

National before being put to stock. Rowans Lad has won numerous prizes before, including 4th

BICC Alencon, 17th BBC Bordeaux, and 7

th WSR National Bordeaux.

We would like to congratulate the winner and also our good friends Pat and John Webber on

their fantastic result of also timing on the day, being the only bird in to Wales on the day.

Winner of the NE Section and 4th

Open is Tony Waite from Whitchurch with a 7 year old

blue cock timed at 06.16 hrs on Sunday morning, obviously not being too far away from home

on the day.

The pigeon is a pure Jim Biss bird from my old partnership as Biss/Waite. It was bred at the

stock lofts at Whitchurch. He had in preparation for this race 4 Purbeck’s with the Club and 2

National Flying Club channel races.

This pigeon was 1st NE Section 2

nd Open in 2012 from this same Bergerac race with the

CSCFC. He is raced on widowhood semi bull system paired to 2 different hens and has 3 nest

boxes. He has been fed on Versele-Laga and Willsbridge mixtures.

Page 5: 1st Open 1 st SE Section Dave and Lisa Waterhouse … · Dave and Lisa Waterhouse from Portsmouth with “Lone Soldier” Bergerac was the Classic’s last old ... He is raced on

Tony Waite with Grandsons Archie & Toby.

The “Japanese Sniper” is up there again. Following on from his 3rd

Open Pau Classic and 2nd

Open Tarbes NFC this week Andy Parsons from Salisbury has another top performance to

add to his collection, this time 1st & 2

nd SW Section 5

th & 6

th Open.

Firstly I would like to say well done to the winner having the only day bird. My 1st bird is

from my distance family of Cannon/Burgess birds but with a direct Deweerdt and my friend

Keith Bush's blood being 2 of the Grandparents. He was unraced as a young bird but trained

and in this year, his first of racing he has had 4 channel races up to Bergerac including NFC

Cholet and NFC Messac where he was my first bird out of 6 sent. He was sent, looking at the

first hen of his life which made him a happy boy.

My second bird has helped make this year very special, he is the bird I clocked from Pau

Classic, winning 1st Section & 3

rd Open. His best positions to date are, 1

st Section, 3

rd Open

Pau, 2nd

Section, 6th

Open Bergerac and 3rd

Section, 10th

Open Tarbes. He was basketed for

Bergerac knowing his hen had laid her 1st egg the night before and after flying my celibate

type system for the last three and a half months.

7th

& 8th

Open we have last year’s winners Chris Howse & David Parsons from Devizes

also 3rd

& 4th

NW Section. The first bird is bred from a brother to my NFC Merit Winner and

a hen that is a daughter of Brian Sheppard’s 2nd

Open International Winner. They were both

on their sixth channel race of the season. “98” was previously 6th

Section last year from NFC

Messac.

My second bird was “Jalta” previously 1st Open Bergerac last year. He has flown his last race,

as he is now going in to the stock loft.

Chris Howse & David Parsons with Layla and Archie.

2nd

SE Section 10th

Open is a member who I wrote about in my Pau report that saying that

over the last 5 seasons he has rarely been out of the top 20 in the open from Tarbes/Pau now

he can add Bergerac to his list. I think it won’t be long and we will see his name on that 1st

Open position. Lee Patterson from Portsmouth. Firstly, let me congratulate Dave & Lisa

Waterhouse on their only pigeon on the day. A wonderful achievement.

The bird I timed is a yearling chequer white flight cock and is a cross of my old R O Jones

family and Steve Wright of House of Arden lines. He was sent sitting 4 day old eggs, having

previously been on roundabout. Earlier in the season he returned hawked and needed to be

rested up for 4 weeks. He has only been in the basket twice since, having been sent to Nort-

sur-Edre with the Solent Fed where he was early next morning in another tough race, and to

this Bergerac race.

Lee Patterson’s Cock Bird.

3rd

SW Section 11th

Open is Mike and Lin Rumbold from Dinton, near Salisbury. For

anyone who has attended the Classic dinner they will tell you that Mike is very good

entertainment value with some of the stories that he comes out with especially when teamed

up with his good friend Andy Parsons.

First of all I would like to say well done to Mr & Mrs Waterhouse on winning the race and to

Andy for topping the SW Section.

My bird is a 5 year old Hienbach x Hagen red cock and has been a very reliable pigeon for

me. This year he has been 8th Section B NFC Cholet, 36

th Section B BBC Niort and now 3

rd

Section Bergerac Classic. He is flown naturally and sent sitting on day eggs.

Page 8: 1st Open 1 st SE Section Dave and Lisa Waterhouse … · Dave and Lisa Waterhouse from Portsmouth with “Lone Soldier” Bergerac was the Classic’s last old ... He is raced on

Next we have our third member in the South West Section, another well established name

Bryan Woods from Shaftesbury 4th

SW Section 12th

Open. This 5 year old Mealy cock

“Andrew” was flown on the celibate system. He is bred from a Fear Brothers cock and a Sid

& Val Miles hen. This pairing given to Bryan by Andrew Tarmas of Radstock a few years

ago. He has produced some outstanding results in the last three seasons alone. In 2012 CSCFC

Ivan Hofton (A Hofton & Son) from Gloucester was our third member in the North West

Section to time in taking 6th

NW Section. Ivan races in the very strong Gloucester & District

Flying Club where competition is rife. The pigeon timed who was sent sitting 4 days has been

very consistent over the channel and is normally home within the first few pigeons every time.

Her breeding is completely long distance from a chequer white flight Stan Dangerfield hen

and a Ken Hine red cock. One of her previous performances from last year was 6th Section

275th Open Tarbes.

3rd

SE Section is one of the sports real gentleman who spent many years convoying the Isle of

Wight fanciers pigeons to the relevant marking stations George Wood from Ventnor. This

pigeon has been a class pigeon for George and only 3 years old. She is a mixture of George’s

own family with other long distance blood lines. Her previous record is 81st Open 42

nd Section

CSCFC Tarbes, 24th Open 9

th Section CSCFC Bergerac and 81

st Open 10

th Section A BBC

Bordeaux in 2013 as a 2 year old and this year 20th

Open 16th Section CSCFC Pau.

Page 10: 1st Open 1 st SE Section Dave and Lisa Waterhouse … · Dave and Lisa Waterhouse from Portsmouth with “Lone Soldier” Bergerac was the Classic’s last old ... He is raced on

George Wood.

For our next members it was like waiting a long time for a bus and then two turn up as both

pigeons arrived within 5 minutes of each other. 2nd

& 3rd

NE Section are Brian & Linda

Dixon from Milton Under Wychwood.

My first bird, a medium size chequer hen bred from my own line of stock birds which I have

had for many years.

This hen had three previous races this year prior to Bergerac these being Exeter, Guernsey and

Messac and had flown Bordeaux in 2013. She was sitting fourteen days and paired up third

week of March with Classic Bergerac in mind.

My second bird a blue bar hen and as with the previous pigeon bred from my own family of

stock birds. The dam was 5th Section and 48

th Open Tarbes in 2013. This hen was paired up

the third week of March and sent sitting eggs for twelve days. She had three races this season

prior to Bergerac these being Exeter, Carentan and Messac.

Brian Dixon and Badger.

take 4th

youngster, He was 78th

Open 6th Section NE Section CSCFC 2013 and 2
