The entertainment that is advertised to take place at Mickleton, on Friday, includes many items given by the girls who so successfully played the parts of "Blue Bell" and " Will o' the Wisp," last year. It is anticipated that an enjoyable programme will be rendered. Private R. Jones, Bridgegate, Barnard Castle, of the Durham Light Infantry, who has been in hospital, is spending a short leave of absence at home. ——o— Mr Fife has organised a campaign against wood pigeons, which commenced on Saturday, and will continue for six wdeks, and he invites the co-operation of others. The many friends and well-wishers of Mr Clarence Appleby, of Hall-street, Barnard Castle, will be pleased to hear that he was the only boy at the North Eastern County School, "ast term, who distinguished himself by passing the Senior Cambridge Examination with first- class honours. He also satisfied the examiners in spoken French. As we announced in these columns recently, the young man has now taken up an appointment as assistant-master at Westwood College. Master Appleby's success is the more gratifying when we remember that his father, who is at present serving his country in India, was ever ready to do his bit for his King, he having previously taken part in the Boer campaign. o During the past few weeks upwards of 100 parcels have been dispatched by the Barnard Castle Wesleyan Church to the men whose names appear on its Roll of Honour. Each parcel contained a cake, writing pad, packet of cigarettes, a box of tea tablets, and a fruitarian cake. Many letters of appreciation have been received from the men, and sincere thanks accorded to the members of the Wesleyan Church. The nurses connected with the church each received a box of chocolates. Private O. Cook, of the North Eastern Rail- way Battalion (Northumberland Fusiliers) has returned to France, after spending ten days' leave with his parents at Boldron. Mr D. Lauder, National Service Commissioner for the Northern Division Of England, which includes the counties of Northumberland, Cumberland, Durham, Westmorland, the Cleve- land district of Yorkshire, and Berwick-upon- Tweed, wishes us to state that he would welcome immediate offers of service from gentlemen of standing and position in the various cities, towns, and districts in his division, as it is his intention to select gentle- men of sound judgment and experience to act under his direction as sub-commissioners in each important industrial centre within his division. All gentlemen making such offers of service must be prepared to act in a voluntary capacity, and be able to give their whole-time service to the duties of sub-commissioners in their respective towns and districts. All offers will be treated in strict confidence. The Commissioner's headquarters, are at 122, Northumberland-street, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Private James Ernest Jones, of Barnard Castle, and formerly employed at the North Eastern County School, of the King's Own Royal Lancashire Regiment, writing from Salonica, wishes to thank the Barnard Castle War Emergency Committee for the parcel which he received about the 4th January. Also Bugler H. Jones, of the Royal Marine Artillery, wishes to thank the above committee for the parcel which was sent to him. On Sunday afternoon last, M r J. G. Burn distributed prizes to the scholars of the Barnard Castle Wesleyan Sunday School. These prizes were awarded for regular and punctual attend- ance during last year. o— Mrs H. C. Watson has received the sum of £8 10s. 6d., and has forwarded it to the treas- urer of the Durham Light Infantry Prisoners of War Fund, the proceeds of the concert organized by Mrs Addison and the Girl Guides, Romaldkirk. The Rev. J. B. Robinson dispatched two hundred and twenty eggs to the headquarters of the National Egg Collection, lasjfc w e e k , f o r wounded soldiers and sailors. "ves awaiti pg her return.' The remains of the late Mrs llaper, wife of Mr Hugh S. Raper, were interred at the New Cemetery, Houghton-le-Spring, on i he 29th of January. The Rev. — Symons oniciated. The deceased was well known at liarnard Castle, and. at the time of her marriage, was living with her grandfather, Mr J. Cleghorne at the Turk's Head Hotel. She died on the 27th of January, in her thirty-fourth year, and has left four children. It is twenty-two years since so much snow has fallen iu Teesdale as has been experienced in this storm. The cost of opening the roads has been enormous, and the exact figures will doubtless be submitted to the Barnard Castle Rural District Council by Mr Lionel Simpson, the active and capable surveyor, this afternoon. The Langdon Beck and Woodland road has been opened thirteen times in six weeks. Colliery owners have been continually applying to have the highways kept open for pitmen to reach their work, many men from Middleton, Egglestone, and Romaldkirk having to tramp to and from the coal-mines. -Mr Simpson's staff of men has only been able to open out from Langdon Beck to Riggside about six times. The money outlay is simply alarm ing. 6 There are twelve cases set down for hearing at the Barnard Castle Police Court this morn ng. o A specially-made hand sleigh was used to convey the coffin, containing the remains of the late Mr Rumney, from Manor Gill farm to the Alston Road, the interment taking place in Forest churchyard last Wednesday. The Rev A. T. Randal administered the last rites, and Mr T. Forster was the undertaker. The coming " Talks" on Gardening by Mr John Smith, F.L.S., County Horticultural Instructor, under the auspices of the County Council of Durham, iu the Witham Hall, are at this moment of supreme importance, when the nation is inaugurating a scheme of wider and more intense cultivation of the soil. The syllabus comprehends facts on the management of soils, fertilizers, vegetables, bush fruits flowers, and the history, propagation, and cultivation of the rose. o The emyloyees on. Lord Barnard's estates have responded splendidly to the country's call for men. In addition to Lord Barnard's three sons, there have joined the Colours 18 men of the Raby Castle staff, and 38 from the estate staff i n t h e county. Three have made the supreme sacrifice, five wounded, two dis charged, and one too ill to join. The War Loan Campaign. ADDRESSES AT THE AUCTION MART. On Wednesday l »Bt, the business at the Barnard Castle and Teesdal* Farmers' Auction Mart was suspended at 12-30 p.m. for twenty minutes, when addresses, by the kind permission of the mart company, were given to the assembled farmers on the' new War Loan. The high mart ring was erowded, many Using unable to get within the building.—Mr H. L. Fife, J. P., the chairman of the company, presided, and urged the farmers to C, their share in helping the Goverumeot to end the war successfully and quickly by lending them their surplus money.—The Rev. H . W . H. BIroham was the first speaker. He pointed out the immediate need of money to c;»rsry on the war, and the d«nirability of the investment —the floes- ever effsred. Conscription of men had taken place, thousands of lives haviog b»en voluntarily laid down, and conscription cf money, might follow if the loan w?s cot volunteered, Mr J. Ingram Dawson (clerk to the Urban Council), who followed, gave in detail the WAys in whioh money could be invested, and the advantages. He strongly nrgei the audience to gat rtd of the idea that the mc <?y was locked op for ever. Os the contrary, they bought stock whioh was daily sold again in the open market, and, as the Government were setting aside a sicking fund of one-sigh th of the wbola Ios,n to purohasa war loan stock wh;n it fell below par on the market, there was little fear of their having any h>s« of capital, and their interest would be 5}- p e r cent.—The addrsaees were very well received, and it is understood that, as a result, the luoal banks were busy in the afternoon receiving subscriptions to the War Loan. Mr J. W. B. Heslop at the Wycliffe Hall. Speaking on the War Loai at the Wvcliffa Hall, on Thursday night, Mr J. W. B. Heslop said he had been deputed to address them on a subject which was before the whole of Ragland. and they knew what he meant, for it had bsen properly described, *s he hoped, as i ' n loan of victory. Ho brieflf set i.nfc that tue man who had a banking account and was able to invest £95, this sum was at onoe turned into fi!00stock; and the man who bad £47 103, would immediately get £50 in stock oa in vestment. Further, a person had the opportunity of buying for £4 15a, a security whioh by the act of investment itself became £5. Then an individual who could not do that might purchase a 153, 61 war certificate, a»d draw £1 at the end of 'five years; and those who had nnt even 15s. 6 J. cculd get cuds at the post-office and pat stamps of the value of slxpenoe upon it until they made the 15s. 63., when they would receive ona of these certifi- cates. A good number of tbem, he know, were depositors in tb« old penny bank, and there they were satisfied with receiving for each £1 interest at the rate of 2} or 2\ per cent. But, if they had 15s. 61. in the penny bank, they would wait till doomsday and not get a penny. If they wanted the war end*d the only way to bring it about was to help the Government. People at the head of affairs were of opinion that the only way to win tin war, aud it wis sound advice, was that they must have as many men as they could find, as many workers as they could discover, and s» much money as they ooald get. In connection with the mom y qU8BtIoo, the Imperial Government had made more than a very liberal offer to the public to help them in bringing an honourable peace. This was an absolutely business transaction, and the man who d i d h< l p c o m m i t t e d no sacrifice, but on the other hand, he was the meaos of bringing about a rail peace. They all had husbands, sons, brothers or fathers in the war, and he was sore that would icduce them to make every endeavour to secure an early return as possible of these men to civil life, Those in power said that helping the Government was the only way to secure such a oocsummatioc. Tcasdale Guardians and the War Loan. A* tha montbly meeting of the above body, on Wednesday, Mr Jobn HraHb, J.P., presldlr g, the Clerk referred to the uew War Loan. So far »a fas» could msko out when the half- year ended on March 31st nbey would have a balance iu hand of from £900 to £1,000, but agaicali that thorn would ba e pay bill amounting to £700 or £800. They were allowed to Invest tu the Loan such part of their revenue bihnoea as were nut Ukely to be Fe quired in the n*<ar f u t u r e . — M ? W , H. Oh ! sad were our hearts when the news reached home We should sec our dear son uo more; We loved him most dearly, and hardly could think He had gjne no more to return. He w s s ro thoughtful, true and kind We can not blot him out of mind ; Hard was the blow, the shock severe The loss of him we loved so dear. Put the hardest part ia yet to oome When the warriors do return, And w» miss amongst the cheering crowd 1 he face of our dear son.
