BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE

CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL (See Fig. 15)= The engine in your tractor has been shipped, from the

factory, already filled with summer weight oil

= Check engine oit with tractor on level ground.

o Remove oil fit lcap/dipstick and wipe clean, reinsert thedipstick and screw cap tight, wait for a few seconds, remove and read oil level If necessary, add oil until"FULL" mark on dipstick is reached, Do not overfill.

• For cold weather operation you should change oil foreasier starting (See "OIL VISCOSITY CHART" in theCustomer Responsibilities section of this manual).

o To change engine oil, see the Customer ResponsibitFties section in this manual.

ADD GASOLINE

o Fitl fuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regular unleadedgasoline. (Use of leaded gasolinewiil increase carbonand lead oxide deposits and reduce vafve life).

IMPORTANT: WHEN OPERATING IN TEMPERATURESBELOW 32°F(0°C), USE FRESH, CLEAN WINTER GRADEGASOLINE TO HELP INSURE GOOD COLD WEATHERSTARTING.

WARNING: Experience indicates that alcohol blendedfuels (calted gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) canattract moisture which Ieads to separation and formation ofacids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. To avoid engineproblems, the fuel system should be emptied before stor-age of 30 days or Ionger. Drain the gas tank, start theengine and let it run until the fuel lines and carburetor areempty. Use fresh fuel next season. See Storage Instruc-tions for additional information. Never use engine orcarburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur°

. Move throttle control to fast (.f_) position

• Allow engine to warm up for a few minutes beforeengaging drive or attachments,.

NOTE: If at a high altitude (above 3000 feet) or in coldtemperatures (below 32°F), the carburetor fuel mixturemay need to be adjusted for best engine performance. See"TO ADJUST CARBURETOR" in the Service and Adjust-ments section of this manual.

MOWING TIPS= Tire chains cannot be used when the mower housing

is attached to tractor.

. Mower should be properly leveled for best mowingperformance. See "TO LEVEL MOWER HOUSING" inthe Service and Adjustments section of this manual.

. The left hand side of mower should be used for trim-ming,

o Drive so that clippings are discharged onto the areathat has been cut. Have the cut area to the right of themachine. This will result in _amore even distribution ofclippings and more uniform cutting..

- When mowing large areas, start by turning to the rightso that clippings will discharge away from shrubs, fences, driveways, etc,. After one or two rounds, mowin the opposite direction making left hand turns untilfinished (See Fig 10 )4

o If grass is extremely tall, it should be mowed twice toreduce load and possible fire hazard from dried clip-pings° Make first cut relatively high; the second to thedesired height°

o Do not mow grass when it is wet. Wet grass will plugmower and leave undesirable clumps. Allow grass todry before mowing,.

° Always operate engine at full throttle when mowing toassure better mowing performance and proper dis-charge of material, Regulate ground speed by select-ing a low enough gear to give the mower cuttingperformance as well as the quality of cut desired_

° When operating attachments, select a ground speedthat will suit the terrain and give best performance ofthe attachment being used

f

FIG, 10

MULCHING MOWING TIPS

IMPORTANT: FOR BEST PERFORMANCE, KEEPMOWER HOUSING FREE OF BUILT-UP GRASS ANDTRASH CLEAN AFTER EACH USE,

o The special mulching blade will recut the grass clip-pings many times and reduce them in size so that asthey fall onto the lawn they will disperse into the grassand not be noticed Also, the mulched grass wiltbiodegrade quickly to provide nutrients for the lawn.Always mulch with your highest engine (blade) speedas this will provide the best recurring action of theblades

- Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet. Wet grass tendsto form clumps and interferes with the mulching action. The best time to mow your lawn is the early afternoon. At this time the grass has dried and the newly cut areawill not be exposed to the direct sun,

o For best results, adjust the mower cutting height so thatthe mower cuts off only the top one-third of the grassblades (See Fig. 11)..For extremely heavy mulching, reduce your width of cut on each pass and mow slowly.

MAX 1/3

14

FIG. 1!

o Certain types of grass and grass conditions may re-quire that an area be mulched a second time tocompletely hide the clippings. When doing a secondcut, mow across or perpendicular to the first cut path,

• Change your cutting pattern from week to week. Mownorth to south one week then change to east to west thenext week. This will help prevent matting and grainingof the lawn,.

TO ADJUST CARBURETOR

(See Figs. 32 and 33)The carburetor has been preset at the factory and adjust-ment should not be necessary° However, minor adjust-ment may be required to compensate for differences infuel, temperature, altitude or Ioado If the carburetor does needadjustment, proceed as follows:

In general, turning the mixture screw in (clockwise) de-creases the supply of fuel to the engine giving a leaner fuel/air mixture. Turning the mixture screw out (counterclock-wise) increases the supply of fuel to the engine giving aricher fuel/air mixture.

IMPORTANT-- DAMAGE TO THE NEEDLES AND THESEATS IN CARBURETOR MAY RESULT IF SCREW ISTURNED IN TOO TIGHT

PRELIMINARY SETTING -

. Be sure you have a clean air filter, and the throttlecontrol cable and choke are adjusted properly (seeabove)_

o With engine off turn idle mixture screw in (clockwise)closing it finger tight and then turn out (counterclock-wise) 1-1/4 to 1_1/2 turns

FINAL SETTING -

° Start engine and allow to warm for five minutes. Makefinal adjustments with engine running and shift/motioncontrol lever in neutral (N) position.

= With throttle control lever in slow (._) position, holdthrottle lever against idle speed screw and adjust idlespeed screw to obtain 1200 to 1400 RPM.

° While still holding throttle lever against idle speedscrew, turn idle mixture screw in (clockwise) untilengine begins to die and then turn out (counterclock-wise) until engine runs rough. Turn screw to a pointmidway between those two positions.

° Continue to hold throttle lever against idle speed screwand adjust idle speed screw to obtain 900 to 1200 RPM.Release throttle lever.

ACCELERATION TEST -

Move throttle control lever from slow (,_.) to fast (._)position° If engine hesitates or dies, turn idle mixturescrew out (counterclockwise) 1/8 turn. Repeat testand continue to adjust, if necessary, until engine accel-erates smoothly

High speed stop is factory adjusted,, Do not adjust -damage may resulL

FUEL SYSTEMIMPORTANT: IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENT GUMDEPOSITS FROM FORMING IN ESSENTIAL FUELSYSTEM PARTS SUCH AS CARBURETOR, FUEL FILTER,FUEL HOSE, OR TANK DURING STORAGE. ALSO,EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT ALCOHOL BLENDEDFUELS (CALLED GASOHOL OR USING ETHANOL ORMETHANOL) CAN ATTRACT MOISTURE WHICH LEADSTO SEPARATION AND FORMATION OF ACIDS DURINGSTORAGE., ACIDIC GAS CAN DAMAGE THE FUELSYSTEM OF AN ENGINE WHILE IN STORAGE,

o Drain the fuei tank

- Start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines andcarburetor are empty..

. Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in thefuel tank or permanent damage may occur,

o Use fresh fuel next season°

NOTE: Fuet stabilizer is an acceptable alternative inminimizing the formation of fuel gum deposits during stor-age. Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storagecontainer., Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizercontainer, Run engine at least 10 minutes after addingstabilizer toallowthe stabilizerto reach the carburetor. Donot drain the gas tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer.

ENGINE OIL

Drain oil (with engine warm) and replace with clean engineoil (See "ENGINE" in the Customer Responsibilitiessection of this manual),
