Dear Friends,

December has just flown by. Can you beliweit? In fact, an entire year has passed and a new onelays before us. Before I look ahead, I would like tostop and look back at the year we have justexperienced.

Ve Danced and Ve Chanced!December found 12 members of IAGSDC

clubs (and a friend) at the Sands Hotel and Casino inLas Vegas for the International Dance Festival.(5\trSD, 1 Cap City Sqrs., 1 PACE, 1 Tinsletown, 3The \filde Bunche, and 2 Desert Valley Squares)This occasion was significant in severai ways. Firstof all, this doubled the number that attended lastye r. This allowed all of us to be more visible andto show nearly seven thousand other dancers that weexist. I7e squared up as "biologically correcr"couples, same sex couples, and half sashayed couples.'We

showed others that we are good dancers whojust want to have fun. By the end of the weekend, people were asking if they could dance with us andseeking our help with things such as weave the ringand our own special nthank you". Callers sought usut on the floor as cue squares because they knew

.re would be right. 'We

were able to makearrangements with at least one new caller and renswacquaintances with many others.

The weekend also gave us the chance ro gerto know some of the members of the new club inLas Vegas - the Neon Squares. Ifle had a chance tomeet some of them for brunch (FIi Aaron, Brian andDan!) and to join more of them at a fund raiser atone of the local watering holes later. They are avery energetic group and have a lot of plans for thefuture. These include a possible fly-in ihe weekendbefore the dancing' and chancing' weekend nextyezr. The fly-in would be December 4,5,& 6followed by the Sands Festival on December Z, 8, &9. This would be yet another reason to plan onspending time in Las Vegas nexr year. Mark yourcalendar.

I would like to take this opporruniry roexpress my great plexure in something I sawhappening over that weekend in Las Vegas, A newclub had formed. Some of their members hadquestions, wanted information and were hoping forsupport. Those IAGSDC members who were therewere quick with their heart-felt and, genuine suppcrrand an immediate desire to help thar new club besuccessful. The generous spirit of IAGSDC dancers'caring and friendship became very evident and mademe feel proud to be among them.

The Came. They Saw. They Shopped!Once again'Western Srar has a very successful

garage sale. Amid the hustle and bustle of Christmasshopping,

'Western Star Dancers held another

successful garage sale. There were treasures ('Peoplewill pay money for this?") and many unique ("'Whatis this again?') items. Some items alludeddescription. ('It does what?") Shoppers came and fewwent away empry handed. ('I(hat do you meanyou're just looking? You'qron'r find better pricesanywhere!") As a result of this last minute shoppingfreruy,'Western Star raised about $725 for the Clubtreasury. This will dlow us to begin 1992 with ahealthy treasury.

WrsrlH[ srARFebruarv - March 1992

Dear Friends,

January has started the new year with & roar of activities. Paul Waters called alively dance which was attended by well over 12 squares of dancers from as far awayas LA. Special thanks should go to Lynn Green for orgenizing this dance andhelping to make it a great time. Bill Gentile deserves a round of applause forhousing Paul and Tim Mezsic (a visitor from the Southland). His gracious hospitalitywent a long way toward maki'g their stay comfortable. It was also fun to havePaul's mom, Peggy, up here for the weekend.

You Can Help!

Some of you have made comments to me and other Board members about the dateon which you have received the last couple of issues of the newsletter. Irt meexplain. The newsletter, along with everything else that happens at Western Star, iscreated and distributed as a result of the volunteer time and energy of the editor andothers.

Sometimes Life has a way of interceding and preventing things from happening inthe same way in which we have become accustomed. People become ill. Theholidays took up time. Work can suddenly become overwhelning. It is for this'^lson the question of 'Why is late?' is really not the best question to ask. A better

stion is 'How can I help so the newsletter is always delivered on time?" Answer:Volunteer to take care of the distribution of the newsletter. This would mean seeingto it that the copies are brought to class, labeled, distributed, and taken for mailing. This represents about 2 days worth of work a month. @lease see me if you areinterested in helping out by doing this job.)

I should add that, although the last couple of iszues may have been a little late, noinformation was lost. Events are announced months in advance at the bottom of thecalendar in the 'Coming Up' section. Most flyers are printed months in advance.WSD TMay provides updates during Class and Dance Nights. We are, however, making a few changes which should help everyone. You will notice that this issue isthe February/March issue and contains the calendar for February and theTENTATM calendar for March. (I say tentative because, occasionally, changesmay occur.) The next issue will be the March/April issue and contain the calendanfor March and April, etc. This should provide everyone with information wellenough in advance. This way if we have to rely on Chance to send out thenewsletter, you will always have the information you need well in advance of anyevent.

Coming Up!

Ron Libby returns from Maine on Wednesday, February 5th. He will da""le anddelight you with his special style. Western Star's Tenth Anniversary Fly In iscoming up in March. A registration form is provided in this issue. A specialregistration fonn for Class members, non dancers, and past members who will

ticipate in the Reunion Celebration. The special fee for those dancers will be $50.r,ric Henerlau will be calling the Banner Dance on May 9th (location to beannounced). Dance Ranch is TENTATMLY scheduled to retum the first Fridayof April. (Arrangements are not complete so the final word is not out.)

Be sure to talk to Ron Bozanan,David Draper, or Jeff Judd if youare interested in a fabulously stylishWSD vest in time for the Flv In.

Don't Stop, Don't Slow Down.Love. Anna D.

A helper is not a teacher! [An angel's] prime function, when filling in a square, is to be in the right place at theright time, to do correctly those things the caller is teachingand to do them in the style the caller is presenting.

A helper who talks or tries to instruct, yanks, pushes orpulls new dancers in order to get them &imed in the rightdirection is certainly doing a disservice to the [student]. Theperson at the microphone is in the best position to see wherehelp is needed. Occasio"ally a word from the [angel] to thecaller/teacher between tips may alert [the instructor] to dosomething that ne€ds. .attention.

Those who come to the class ostensibly to help have just theopposite effect when they sit or stand on the side linestalking while the caller is trying to instruct. Many callerswill make a definite point of meeting with the helpers beforeeach class session. In this way, they can spetl out whatthey want and do not want in the way of assistance.

ANGEL ETIQUETTEby Freeman Stamper

l. Attends regulady so that students can develop trust andsee that club members are interested in the members ofthe class.

2. Arrives prior to the beginning of the class to beavailable, if needed, during the first tip and todemonstrate to the students the importance of punctuality.

3. Shows compassion for the individual needs of the classmembers by encouraging them to ask questions andresponding seriously and appropriately to their inquiries.

4. Waits quietly as the squares are forming for each tip andmoves immediately to fill vacant positions in squareswithout having to be 'cajoled' by the instructor(s) orother club members.

5. If dancing, does not talk in the square nor exhibitunnecessary force and quietly reminds the students not totalk.

6. If not dancing, does not talk but stands near a square inorder to provide non-verbal assistance (such as handdirections) to the square.

l. Performs various adminislnliye duties with a cooperativespirit when asked and repres€nts the fun and fellowshipof the club and square dancing in general.

. After the conclusion of a tip, brings to the attentionof the instructor(s) or the srchangel(s) any correctiveactions or additional instruction needed.

Dear Friends,

Things are happening all the time! February startedoff with a livefy dance called by Ron Libby of Maine.Ramona Michaels was the event coordinator for this funand challenging dance. Ramona and her crew helped toshow about 10 squares of dancers what fun a midweekdance can be. lf you missed him, you'll be glad to knowthat Ron will be back at the same time next year.

Sew Whatl?!

I would like to extend a very special thanks to DavidDraper, seamstress extraordinaire, for all his efforts indirecting the construction of the latest batch of WesternStar vests. David remade patterns, cut fabric, sewed (alot!), redid templates for rhinestones, and many otherthings associated with making vests tor 20 or so people. He did all this while in the midst of costuming a show forA.CJ. (His real job!) . Thank you, David for al l your help.In addition to David's very capable leadership, othermembers of the vest making team included RonBozeman, Ed Zeigler, Todd Tryon, Jeff Judd, and a hostof other willing workers.

I had the opportunity to stop by to see the costumeshop humming with activity. lt reminded me of othertimes when several of us got together to work on aproject for the benefit of WSD and its members (Such asother vest making bees, creating a giant crinoline, andmaking name panels to name a few). Taking the time towork on a project, such as making vests, is an importantpart of being a member of Western Star. These kinds ofprojects provide a chance to work together toward acommon goal. They give people a chance to practiceskills (such as sewing or cutting) which they don'tordinarily use. These are also special ways of showingthat you are a part of a group of people who careenough about each other and Western Star to take thetime to work together. lt is this last reason that, Ibelieve these types of projects are a vital part of the lifeof Western Star. The reward is not the finished product(or what the Club can give you for participatingl but thetime you spend with others working to complete theproject.

Move On!

The Green '91 Class completed all the Basic program.Following a few weeks of dance time they will move onto the Mainstream program. This program consists ofapproximately 26 calls. Many of these calls arecomprised of combinations of calls learned in the Basicprogram. The Mainstream program will bring you newchal lenges and new joys. (The fee is $45.)

Ten Years!

Can you believe it? This month Western Star willcelebrate ten years of participation in the world of gaysguare dancing. To commemorate this event, we willhost a weekend of dancing and celebrating. There aremany ways in which you can participate and help tomake this a truly special weekend for everyone. First ofall, you can plan to attend. {Enclosed is a schedule forthe Weekend.) On Saturday night we have a specialcelebration planned for everyone who has ever been amember of a Western Star Class or a Club member. Weare also offering a speciaf package for non dancers, newdancers, and our friends who only plan to attend thecelebration.

We will have many out of town guests and we stillneed housing for them. lf you have a spare bed, room, sofabed, or mattress on the floor, please fil l out aHousing Provider form and return it to the Fly InCommittee. Throughout the weekend (March 13-1sth)we will need a lot of help. We will need help to sellsodas, staff the registration tables, sell 50/5O tickets, setup sound, transport equipment, decorate, check coatsand many other jobs which will serve to make this amemorable experience for all. lf you are interested inhelping out in any of these areas, please check with meand I will direct you to the correct committeechairperson. You can also offer your services when yrarrive at the dances. There are certain to be manyopportunities to help.

I hope to see all of you there {Directions and scheduleenclosed). This is certain to be an experience you willnot soon forget. Come down and help Western Starcelebrate ten years and begin a journey down the road toanother ten years.

Meanwhi le Down at the lDance] Ranch!

Dear Fricnds,

What a wonderful party we threw! Wecelebrated our ten years in great style! Paul andMike kept us whirl in' and twir l in' for a total of tenhours.

I must take a few moments to say how proud Iwas of everyone that weekend. As I stood on thedance f loor on Sunday afternoon, I saw that thingswere quietly being taken care of and people werepitching in as needed. Throughout the weekend Iheard comments about what a good t ime peoplewere having. People were very complimentary, especial ly about the organization of the weekend. Imust share with you the ult imate preparednessstory. After Sunday brunch, bne of the dancerswent to the coat check to see if , by chancasomeone had some dental f loss. They did. (Patty

'hite is always prepared for anything.)

The spir i t of cooperation which was shown by somany people made me proud to be a member ofWestern Star. There were so many people whohelped that i t would be diff icult to name themindividually. Please know that i f you are one of thepeople who helped before, during, or after the f lyinyou should feel very proud of yourself. You were apart of the history of Western Star and, in part, responsible for a wonderful weekend for al l .

Al l of this wonderful success was not withoutrisk. As a volunteer organization, we count on ourmembers to take on individual responsibi l i t ies andto fol low up on them. Unfortunately, there aretimes when some fai l to fol low up on acommitment. When this happens, the fal lout canhave a large impact on the Ctub. This haBpenedduring the f lyin. Due to the lack of fol low up onthe part of one member, the Club incurred afinancial loss which totaled upwards of $3,000.From time to t ime the plans of the Club don't go as

xpected. (That's Life , after al l .) However, we.-,most never experience such a f inancial loss dueto carelessness on the part of an individual. Whatdoes this mean to youT lt means that i f you

volunteer to do something, please do it . People arecounting on you. lf you can't do as you offered, please lgt ths event coordinator (or any otherresponsible person) know so that someone else cantake over. Remember that no matter how small atask may seem, the Club is counting on you. That's part of being a member of the square dancefamily which I have grown to love.

lf you would l ike to help the Club get passed thistemporary set back, you can do so with a donation. We are looking for f inancial "angels" to help us out.Any amount will help. Many thanks in advance foryour generosity.

For those of you who were unable to attend"Square Thru to the Tenth", there were manycameras working that weekend so there are sure tomany chances to relive the experiences severalt imes over.

Again my sincerest thanks to each of you foryour part icipation in one of the best t imes of myli fe. The weekend was very specialto me and wil lremain in my memory for a long t ime to come.

Don't stop. Don't slow down.Yellowrocks!

The Green'91 Class isscheduled to graduate on Wednesday, June 3rd and the PlusClass is scheduled to graduate on Monday, June 8th. Thiswill be followed by a few weeks of dancin' to get everyonewarmed up for the IAGSDC Convention in Albuquerque.

After the graduations. Mondays and Wednesdays wtllbecome dance nights. Mondays will tre Plus and Wednesdaywill be Mainstream with some mghts for every to dancetogether. There will be theme rughts and party nighs. Ifyou have any ideas for some ofthese nights, please contactEd Conley.

o B lue '92

On Monday, August 3rd. we rvil l begin the Blue'92. Thiswill be the first of 2 free nights with the first offrcial classon Monday, August l7th. Tell your fricnds. Tell I0. (Oncethe Class begins on Mondays, dancing will continue onWednesdays for both Mainstream and Plus.)

o Convention News

If you are plaruring to go to the Convention. please conl, actBob Haas, our new Assistant IAGSDC Rep, to give himinformation about your uavel plans. Bob will be helpingwith such details as keeping you informed about Conventionnews, matching up room mates, and keeping track of who iswhere. (Details elsewhere in this newsletter.)

i Fourth of Juty Picnic

This year's Founh of July picruc on Angel Island will takeplace on Saturday, July l8th. We will ride the ferry, picnic.and play games. It is a day of much fun and frivolity. Moredetails in the next edition.

t Sp"iog Cteaning Time!

You will notice in the calendar and flyer that we are havinga garage sale on Saturday & Sunday. June 6th and 7th. Thisis really a very good opportunity for you to get rid ofallthose treasures that you've been saving for 'Just in case".

That bag ofcollectibles in the back ofyour closet that youhave been wondering what to do with is probably just thething someone else is looking for. The more donations thatwe receive, the more treasure hunters we can make veryhappy. You would be very surpnsed at some of the thingspeople will buy.

Garage sales of the past have proved to be very successful. In order to continue doing the fun tlungs that we do as aclub (such as Camp Caz), we need your donations. We alsoinvite you to mme help sell and set up displays. We havefound that items that are less than glamorous (trashy!) oftensell simply because of the artistic way they are arranged.

lRemember the dancing chicken or the wax cat?) If youhave large items that you wish to donate, please call Boband f,'elix or me. We will help you with arrangements topick it up. Ifyou have a truck and are avarlable for pickupson Friday night or Saturday morning, please let me know.

lf you have never participated in a Western Star GarageSale, you will hnd that it is really a fun way to spend sometime dunng the weekend. You can work on your sun tan, socialize, and develop those latent sales skills that you nevereven knew you had.

Well, my dear fnends, I hope this month has gone well foryou and that next montl is even better.

Take care, Love and Yellowrocks I Anna

Dear Friends,

Can you believe it? Here it is almost summer and timefor convention again! lt is amazing how quickly timepasses. I always look forward to Convention as a timeto make new friends and to get caught up on theactivities of others I have met in the past. lf you areattending for the first time, you will be surprised at howquickly you meet people. Since everyone is there forthe same reason - to have a good time - it really putseveryone in a festive and friendly mood. Here are afew things to remember:

Try to dance with different partners.

Be prepared for a wide variety of styling.(IheMustang Allemande Left is really something!) lf youfeel you need some help in figuring it out, be sure toask. People are always willing to help.

You will have the opportunity to dance to callers withwhich you may not be familiar. Be patient withyourself if, at first, you have trouble adjusting to theirtempo or voice. You will soon be whirlin' andwirlin' as though you had grown up with them.

Keep cards or paper and pencil handy. You'll want tobe sure to stay in touch with allthose new friends.

Be sure to visit Steffany and pick up your travel guide"

Sell! Sell l Sell l

As you've heard, the next Western Star Garage Salewill take place during the weekend of June 6th & 7th at577 Castro (Bob & Felix's).This is really a wonderful way to pass your treasureson to others while giving you a chance to pick up somenew, "can't live without" items. Garage sales are alsoa great way to make money for the Club so we cancontinue to do the kinds of things that we all enjoy(such as retreats, dances, picnics, and other activities).

June 1, 1992

Dear Fellow Club Members,

I hope that you willjoin with me to ensure that Western Star Dancers remains the activeand strong club that is such an important part of our lives. Effective June 1 the Board ofDirectors has appointed me to the position of lnsurance Commissioner. My job is tocoordinate fund raising activities and solicitations for our SELF-INSURANCE FUND. Justhow important is this fund? lt is vital"

As many of you know, our Tenth Anniversary Fly-ln suffered a significant deficit - close to$4,000, Although generous donations from several members strengthened our immediatecash flow situation, they were not sufficient enough to sustain our normal club activities. We would now be facing dire cutbacks if the club had not been self-insured.

Square Dance equipment insurance is not available commercially. Quite a few years agowe created our own CD fund and added additional monies as we purchased new audioequipment. This original CD fund, was set aside to cover any loss of our equipment. But, aswe have discovered over the years, the club is at risk for more than just equipment; our1987 retreat at Camp Swig lost some $2000, a $600 generator was stolen during our 1988Gay Day Parade activities and the 1989 Earthquake, just one week before the Camp Cazretreat, could have had a serious impact. Although the club can take pride in the consistentand professional manner in which it has run its activities, that alone is not a guaranteeagainst misfortune.

As a result the Board is establishing a new SELF-INSURANCE FUND to cover any futureemergencies. Since all of our original CD monies have been cashed in to cover the TenthAnniversary loss, you can see that we have a ways to go. Our goal is raise $3,000 over thenext three years. You can help:

Donations by individuals, groups of individuals, events or fund raisers will be sincerely andgratefully appreciated" Categories for recognition are:

up to $25.00$26.00 to $50.00$51 to $100$101 to $250and over $250

Donations should be given to the treasurer, Eddie Smith or myself - please be sure toinclude the "donor's" name so that we can give you a big THANKS! Please call or talk tome if you have any questions or ideas.

LET'S WORK TOGETHER TO PROVIDE FOR OUR FUTURE. THANK-YOU!;-;-- - -

Yorl're irrrrited to ioin us for a sqlrrzrredarlce t(r)ip to Rrrssia in Arrgrrst A993!

The iourney begins!Yes, gay & lesbian square &ncers in Red

\uare! Members of the Foggy City Dancers Perfor-mance Team are organzrng a trip to Russia in 1993.Our cunent plan is to visit three cities, each consist-ing of a wonderful blend of leam-to-square danceevents, planned tours, time to spend with our newRussian friends, and unplanned free time for per-sonal interests. We are planning to leave San Fran-cisco on Monday, August t6,1993 and begin ourjourney in the ciry of Kiev. By train we will tmvel toSt. Petersbu rg the n a few days later onto Moscow. O nMonday, August 30, 7993 we will return to SanFrancisco.

A Journey toRussia in 1993

One of our primary goals is to support the emerging gay & lesbiancommunity in the former Soviet Union. We will do this in a number of ways - hostleam-to-square dance events as local fundraisers in each city, be available formedia interviews whenever appropriate, visit persons with AIDS, andlire gay/lesbian Russian tour guides whenever possible. Consequently, we view this tripas more of an adventure than a vacation. But what an exciting once-in-aJifetimeadventure it will be!

l|i/e are contracting with a local tour company ttnt specializes in taking"performance groups" on tour. All meals, lodging, travel, tours and leam-to-squaredance events will be handled by this company. Ve chose them because of theirexpertise in planning tours and sensitivity to lesbian/gay concems.

Regtstratfon deadllneMany friends and members of other square dance clubs have expressed an

interest in joiningus.'Ve are limited in the numberof people we can take on thistrip. Ouroptimalsize isforty, howeverwecanexpand thattosixtypeople. In orderto facilitate registration, we have set up a deadline for your securing a place onthe trip. All interested members of other square dance clubs will need to send intheir application and initial payment so it is postmarked no later than Sanrrday,August 15, 1992. The trip will be filled up on a first come basis. We will use thepostmark dates to establish order of sign up. Once the trip is filled, a waiting listwill be set up based on postmark date as well. Qolden Slat Avard 1992by Edna louise

Another LAG.S.D.C. convention has come and gone witheveryone having awonderfirl time in Albuquerque, NewMexico. Some more than others ! Over 1100 people, fromall around the country and Canada attended "Diamonds inthe Desert" this July 4th weekend. Fun was had by all !

Wth so many new faces and hot looking people from allover it was hard to pick a winner for this years "GoldenSlut Award". After hard deliberation we finallv have awinner !

The"Golden Slut Award" was started at the 1989convention in New York City. Probably out ofjealouqy oreny ! The recipient ofthe'?eel the Apple" G.S.A PhilipStover became known as the "lost sqtrare dancer". He gotlost somewhere in Manhattan enjoying the native NewYorker hospitality ! He showed up long enough for the clubphoto, we guess to prove he was really there. Soonaftenvards he disappeared again.

The following year, at the'North Star Promenade"convention in Vancouver, Canada l.ee Chandler out dideven Phiiip's Big Apple adventures. He was away fromhotel and dance floor probably promoting free tradeagreements between Canada and the U.S.A He must havebeen leaming French ! I-ee, that's in Quebec, Aaaaal

Finally last year in t\fiami Beach, Florida at the "Cast aShadow in the Sun' convention the Golden Slut award was

given to Sam Kmler. He was rumored to have been playingfiddler crab in the hot tub with the famous Mss WellaBalsam. Also for zucking face under a palm tree on thebeactr- How romantic ! No one knows ifthe affairs wentbeyond these events, because no hickeys or calpet bumswere found on Sam's person. But he still had fun !

Well this year it must have been very prestigious to hold thetitle Golden Slut beczuse there was so much competitionfor it. Lots of stories and rumors about lots ofpeople. Lotsofwitnesses. Lots ofeyes were wide open in Albuquerque.

Here's a couple of stories that came out ofNew Mexico. One (trvo of many) person was seen by the pool beingmanhandle{ goped and molested ! At the same time hewas bragging about all the tricks he'd already had.

Another person was tattled on by his roorrunate for havingbeen hcked out ofhis own room. It seems he needed theroom for throwing an old fashion rorruu:r feast with at leastfive fellow square dancers" That means orry, Blanch.Where's Scott and John with their video when vou needthem ?

Those werejust two stories out ofmany that came of"Diamonds in the Deserf'. We are all jealous and envious !Since there was so much cut throat competition this year itwas hard to pinpoint one particular winner. So the for thefirst timq the 1992 'Diamonds in the Desert' Golden SlutAward goes to Joe Nesci and Llmn Green !! A tie ! One asslutty as the other ! Congratulations to Joe and Lynn and allthe past winners ofthe Golden Slut Award !Yellowrocks !!

WSD BOARD MEMBERS

ANNA DAMIANI - ART BRADLEYDAVID DRAPER. EDDIE SMITH

GARY GRAY- JEFF JUDD

Dear Friends,

A'Craft/'Day it was!Thjs month bro 'ght anotler "first" to Western

Star. This was the occasion of the first Western' -Dancers' I{olidayCraftFairand Bazaar.

- ; was an occasion for several of Westrrn

Star s artisans to show their stuff and rnake a

little money for the Lnsurance Fund (about

$75.00). Holiday c'ndy, rainbow booties, hand

rnade cards, and exotic treasures from BaIi were

arnong ttre wares available to shoppers All of us

had a good time and saw Ge opportunity to do

some thinp differently next year whid will

enable this event to really grow next year. For

those of you who did not participate, it's not too

early to start planning for next year.

Also in NovemberFood, Dancing and leather "|rc played a rnajor

part in the events of November. The Blue Class

was weloomed with a pot luck reception and the

home of Ed Gnley and Paul Cahill. Class

members and angels from the Diablo Dancers

{C,oncord were introduced to the world of

square dance parties in San Francisco. Shelby

Dawson 4az'led and delighted rlrncers from all

sr rpd ft6 Bay Area and Sacramento. New

:rs had the &ance to dmce with otler new

dancers and compa-re the exlerience. After two

nights of dancing, several of us went over to tle

F,:gle for the Beer Busr I'm sure this experience

is one tlat will be long remembered byrnany.

(Note: Due to the publication s&edule for this

edition, detrilq for the above events were not

available. Be assured, all memorable moments

will be reported in the next edition)

FromtheBoardRom

On November 8th Ge Board met to spend an

afternoon getting to know eac:h other and

making some plans for the coming year. During

this time we covered several topics induding:

workshops, publicity for Wester'n Star and our

dasses, and sorne possible social activities to

mund out tle calendar.

'WhntAbrutlUeP

I should say tlat for all lhe ide"q that we as

Board members rnay disanss, none of them are

of any use without the involvement and ideas

tlat mme from you-the Members-who are the

Iifeblood of the Club. "What can I do?", you

might ask- There are a lot ef rhi.gs you can do.

Vhenever you have an idea for an activity, t€U

any of the Board members about it If you arent

sure as to how to go about getting it done, don't

worry. One of us will be glad to help you or find

someone who can (l should add that sometimes

we get very busy with Club and Life activities

So, if you can put your ideas in writing, it would

be of great help.) Whenever you notice an

activity coming up, mntact the Event

Coordinator and volunteer to help. Become an

Event C,oordinator yourself. If you are not

comlortable enorrgh to oordinete an event

yourself, one of us will work with you

A'0adyThlng!Another thing you can do to help is come to thecbqqes, Both the Basic deqs (soon to b€Mainstrearn) and the PIus cleqq crn use yoruhelp. Think back toihe days when you were

learning and you looked up to find a sniling

face who assured you that everything is going to

be OK lt was important to you then and it is

important to them now. It is also important to

bave as mrny experienced dancers in the

squares as possible

loo6s thing you can do is stick around even

thoqh there are just eno,,gh people for the

sguares tlatare on the floor. Having exta folks

around to provide direction and relieve some of

the angels tlat are dancing is also importalt

You rnay think that, because you already know

16" crlls, you don't have anytling left to learn

Not trua There is always some subtlety or a new

way of looki.g at a call tlat rnay never have

occurred to you. Another advantage is the

chance to get to know some people that you

miglt not other'wise have much of an

opportunity to meet

This rnay sound like you are being asked to do

things and are wonderi.g what you will get in

refurn The alswer is this: You get a sense of

accomplishment, a feeling of involvement, new

people in your life, you learn skillq tlat you

might not have much of an opporhrnity to learn

elsewhere, and you learn thejoy of being a part

of the world of square dancing. Most

importantly, youll learn the meaning of the

phrase 'sguare

dancing is just friendqhip set to

music"

Onel^od.Tbougbt

As the year comes to an end, look around at all

of those people and events ttrat have becorne a

part of your life this

year. Treasure tlem.

took ahead tonext

year. Resolve yourseU

to being a part of the

future of Western Star

and the cornrmrnity of
