The early 1990s

The early 90s were still dominated by the fashion of the 1980s until Grunge arrived.

Some of the more popular trends of the 90s included:• Acid washed jeans• Spandex tights• Tie-Dye• Fluorescent colours• Black leather biker jackets

Acid washed jeans

Acid washing was a technique rather than an actual piece of clothing. The process in which acid washing was done was by:

• Soaking pumice stones into chlorine.• Insert the jeans and the stones into an industrial washer.• Checking on the jeans every 10 minutes. 15 – 25 minutes is the

usual recommended time though checking regularly is essential.• When happy with the outcome of the jeans, load into another

machine and add antichlor and wash with water for 5 minutes.• Wash jeans in water for 5 minutes more to remove any grit from the

stones and any possible remaining chlorine.• Put the jeans in a high-powered drier until all dry.

Never let children acid wash in any way possible.

Tie-Dye

Tie-Dyeing clothes is a process of resist dyeing textiles or clothing which is made from knit or woven fabric, usually cotton; mostly using bright colours. Tie dyeing consists of twisting a piece of clothing or folding it into a pattern and binding it with string or rubber bands. Dye is then applied to parts of the clothing. Designs are formed by applying different colours of dyes to different sections of the wet fabric. A wet t-shirt is much easier to use rather than just dyeing on a dry t-shirt. Once complete, the material is rinsed, and the dye is set.

Fluorescent colours

Fluorescent – coloured clothing or High Visibility clothing is clothing made of fluorescent material with added reflective tape or shapes. Fluorescent material glows because ultraviolet light from the Sun reacts with the material. The effects are even stronger in low level light which makes it effective nightwear, warning pedestrians, and drivers that are in the vicinity. Fluorescent clothing can be used in any material and in the 90s the top 5 fluorescent colours were blue, green, orange, pink, and yellow. Fluorescent clothing was very popular with teenage and pre-teen girls, although fluorescent t-shirts and shorts were also popular with boys. Fluorescent clothing included t-shirts, sweatshirts, socks, shoelaces and hair scrunchies.

Leather Jackets

Leather jackets were worn from the 1950s and continued to be worn until the present day. It became a bit of a trend in the 90s for teens mostly and people usually wore them to look hard and tough; mostly in the USA and UK to promote the “Greaser” clique. This can be seen and stereotyped by the musical Grease and by the character Fonzie in the sitcom Happy Days. Leather jackets are made from leather which is obtained from animal hides.
