STATEMENTOFPURPOSEInternational Peace Walk, Inc. is dedicated to creating positive means of

resolving international and cross cultural conflicts. Ourcurrent and

ongoing focus is improving American-Soviet relations to create a context

fo r ending the arms race.

Statement o fPurpose for 1988American-SovietWalks:

While we acknowledge that nations have legitimate securityanddefense concerns, it

seems increasingly clear that militaryapproaches to international conflict havebeen

renderedobsolete by developing technologies. Ideological differencescannot justify

imperiling al l life on Earth. Oursurvival requires therefore thatmodern politicsembrace a

greater morality than force ofarms.

Webelieve that the arms racecanbe reversed. As citizens we cannotenact the

legislation that will do this. We CANhowever, through civilian, cultural and trade

exchangesofsufficientscale,create a climate ofpositive international relations in which

the armsracewill collapse under the weight of its own moraland economic illogic.

Weuse walking asametaphor forwhatwe believe needs to happen:

personal andphysical involvement

taking the time to understand each other

carefullyplanning, together, ournextmovesand recognizing that al l steps in the right

direction help bring us to our destination.

But Walking together ismore than just a metaphor- it is also a process anda

grounding, the very actofwhich leads to the resolutions and understandings we seek.

By bringing Soviets to Walk in the UnitedStates we will give large numbersof

Americans the opportunity, perhaps for the first time, to talk with Sovietcitizens face to

face .American Walkers in the Soviet Union will provide the same unprecedented

opportunity to thousands ofSoviets. By talking openlywith each other, proceeding from

Largescaleand high profile interactions such as theseWalkswillallow the Americanand Sovietpeople to strip away the veils of ideologyandseeeachotherwith the clarityof

experience.Weact in the beliefthatopen and challenging interactionswill help us findthe moraland politicalstrength to begin basingour internationalrelations no ton the sizeofour arsenals,but on the legitimate interests ofal lpeople.

1987In 1987, International Peace Walk, Inc. (IPW)

conceived and then joined with the Soviet Peace

Committee (SPC) to organizewhat was to become one

ofthe largest and most significant events in the history

of citizen diplomacy: The American-Soviet Walk.

In January of 1987, after two months of negotiations,

IPWand the SPC signed an agreement to bring hundreds

of American and Soviet citizens together for a

remarkable joint Walk in the Soviet Union. No public

interaction of this type or scalehad ever been attempted

between these two nations.

Between 8 June to 14July, 1987, the "impossible"

Walk became a reality. Two hundred and thirty

Americans and 200 Soviets journeyed together, mostly

on foot; theA50 miles between Leningrad and Moscow.

Along the way, they spoke with Soviets from all walksof life-factory and farm workers, politicians and

dissidents, shop keepers and school children.There were

no restrictions on interviews, photographs or

conversation topics. Their route took them through cities

and villages, forests and farmlands. They were seen in

person byover250,000 Soviets,and in the Soviet med ia

by over fifty million.

TheWalk culminatedwith the first Soviet-American

stadium rock ·concert in history-on the fourth of July

in Moscow. Produced by Bill Graham for IPW, the show

• included Santana, JamesTaylor, Bonnie Raitt, the Doobie

Brothers, Collective Vision and a host of Soviet stars.

Three fi lms were made of the Walk-a one-hour

documentary, jointly filmed and edited by American and

Soviet crews, an American concert special and a 30

minute Soviet cinema piece. The Soviet peoplewelcomed the American Walkers with excitement and

enthusiasm beyorid anyone's greatest hopes. And the

stage was set for even more extraordinary joint events

Southwestern USSR, along the Caucasusmountains

t hrough the republ icsof Georgia and perhaps

Azerbaijian and Armenia Gustnorth of Iran), and will

concludewith a visit to Moscow.Two hundred Americans

and their Soviet counterparts w ill spend just under one

mont h together in these Republics between the Black

and Caspian seas, horne to some of the world's most

beaut i fu l beachesand mounta ins.

INTERNATIONAL PEACE WALK-USA w ill travel the Pacific

Northwest. Two hundred Soviets and theirAmerican

Goodwill Games, to be held in Sea ttle,Washington.

republics of the USSR-Uzbek, Tajik, Kirghiz and Kazakh

Gustnorth of Afghanistan and Pakist an). Tashkent,

TRADE The American-Soviet arms race will continue until as much money is investedand earned in peacefu l trade between the USAand the USSR as in preparations for

wa r. IPWhasset up a new corpo rat ion, 'Trade Peace', to increaseAmerican-Soviet trade

and generatemuch needed money for Peace work.TradePeace iscurrently developinga joint trading companywith t he Soviet Peace Commit tee- which would exportAmericangoods to the USSR, and bring Soviet goods here. Trade Peace is also working to

develop an international hotel in Moscow.

DOCUME TARY Torecord theseWalks and convey theirmessageto a broader audience,IPWplans to make a feature documentaryof the 1988Walkswith footage from both

countries. IPW and Gosteleradio co-produced a documentary of last year's Walk. Thiswas shown on pr ime time Soviet television to an audience in excess of SO,OOO,OOO!

Gosteleradio has agreed to co-produce the 1988documentary for the Soviets.We arecurrently looking for an American producer and crew. .

PRE-WALK DELEGATIONS We plan to exchange several delegations of 5 to 20 peoplebetween countries which w ill be hosting Walks. These cit izen diplomats will travelmonths in advance oftheWalks, and will stay for several daysin towns and citiesalongtheWalk routes.They wi ll visit schools,placesofworship, local organizations and town

meeti ngs. If you are int erested in being a host or traveler, please indicate so on the
