If anybody deserved a long and happy retirement Theodorus Amandus Wortelboer did. Theo (pronounced Tayo) as he was affectionately known through out Ruakaka and beyond, worked hard and made the most of whatever life threw at him. As a young man in Holland he had been given the nickname Lampje or light bulb, because he was always so happy. He would turn up here just at sunrise with his tow truck and unload a vehicle for Geoff, my auto electrician husband, to have a look at. If there was someone knocking on our front door at around 6am we knew it had to be Theo. He was unfailingly cheerful. One month after he lost his leg in a motor vehicle accident in Ruakaka he was back at work, hopping around with a crutch looking

I can remember coming across him at Ruakaka Motors about two years ago and wondering at how happy he looked. With the loss of his much loved wife Trish following on so soon after his accident, he had more than most of us to deal with. Theo had just been to Australia to have a new state of

a bicycle and climbing stairs without a crutch. He marvelled at the genius of the device and insisted on showing everyone who could bear to watch how it screwed into his thighbone. There was a new woman in his life, Wendy. “Trish wouldn’t want me sitting around here being miserable,” he said. He had plans to travel. In all those years working 13-hour days at the garage he had dreamed and planned for the time he would be able to do this. Theo was a very social, generous person. He would invite everyone associated with the motor trade in Ruakaka and their families to dinner at a local restaurant and insist on paying the bill himself. He was very proud of his home high on the hill above Ruakaka. He and Trish had worked hard to afford such a beautiful house

and he liked to play host there to his friendsFrom what I can gather, Theo’s untimely death of a chest condition early this month was a complication arising from the many operations he underwent in connection with the amputation of his leg. All that suffering and the loss of his courageous, bright future were caused by someone who got behind the steering wheel of a vehicle after he had had too much to drink. I never heard Theo speak bitterly about this person. From what I can remember he would just shrug and say something like, “These things happen.” But that accident nine years ago didn’t need to happen. Theo’s death leaves a big gap in the Ruakaka community. I will miss seeing him around the Town Centre. I think we should tell Theo’s story to our teenagers, what a great person he was and the cause of his death. We don’t want any of them to ever have to carry the burden of maiming someone or taking their life. If I am tempted to have a glass of wine at a party before I drive home or to drive somewhere when I really should be sleeping, I will remember Theo and the enormity of what he suffered and what was taken from him by someone else’s terrible mistake.

Jared Halse who farms at Ruakaka and Takahiwai said the lighter soils on his Taka-hiwai block dry out faster and he has been feeding sileage out there for the past two weeks. Good spring rain gave him good stocks of sileage and hay so as long as some good rain falls in March he is not too worried. He has turnip crops planted which, while they stopped growing over the past few weeks store well underground and are now being used to feed his Ruakaka herd. The long term forecast for the district predicted light rain for the rest of this week with heavier rain arriving on Sunday. Jared said light rain is more of a nuisance than a help as it promotes facial eczma Cloud cover, cooling things down a bit is useful. Constable Jordan White of the Waipu Police Station received a call out to a burglary in Ormiston Rd., Waipu at around 10.15pm on Saturday 10 January. The owners of the

chainsaw and assorted tools in the process of being loaded into the burglar’s vehicle. They phoned the Police and tried to block the burglars’s exit but he managed to barge his way through and escape onto the road They were however able to give Police a good description of the burglar’s vehicle and Constable White came across it on State Highway One on his way to the scene. He gave chase and followed the vehicle onto Mangapai Road and then onto the Paparoa - Oakleigh Rd. Police laid spikes at the approach to Paparoa. The car continued on towards State Highway 12 but eventually stopped. The driver got out and ran through the town. He entered a house startling the residents and leapt over a fence at the rear of the property. Cordons were put in place but then Police received information that

a blue Ford Ranger ute had been stolen from a farm in Franklin Rd. The keys had been left in the truck’s ignition. The thief and vehicle have not been seen since. Police believe the man involved in this incident is Robert Blewden, aged 37, who is wanted on breach of parole and methamphetamine charges. He is European, 1.73m tall, of medium build. He is considered dangerous so should not be approached. Police warn that Mr. Blewden is likely to still be somewhere in the southern Whangarei District area. The missing Ford Ranger has damage to its front sustained when it was driven through a farm gate while it was being stolen.

People have until 4pm on Friday 13 February 2015 to comment on the Whangarei District Council’s proposed changes to its District Plan as it affects rural parts of the district. Under proposed Plan Change 85AD Council planners are suggesting six new rural environments (or zones) be created.

Rural Village Centre, Rural Village Industry and Rural Village Residential.A strong motivation behind these proposals is the Council desire to protect productive rural land, whether it be used for dairy or dry stock farming, horticulture, forestry or quarrying from being compromised by residential and lifestyle developments in its midst. Ormiston Rd., Brooks Rd., Massey Rd. and McLeod Rd. all have many lifestyle block properties but have not been selected as candidates for this proposed new zone. Comment forms can be downloaded from the Council website or are available from Council Service Centres, including the Bream Bay Service Centre in the Ruakaka Library building in Takutai Place, Ruakaka. The formal plan change is likely lodged in the middle of 2015. A statutory submission process will follow the publication of this change before any alteration is made to the district plan.

“Is this how we treat our visitors?”

Comments on rural plan change draft due by Friday 13 February

Waipu is vastly better than it is for those going to or travelling from Ruakaka. The Ruakaka bus stop is alongside the Gas Service Station on State Highway One. There is no shelter, the pavement is usually pot holed and the availability of a toilet depends on the generos-ity of the service station owner. The Ruakaka Residents and Ratepayers Associa-

tion submission to the Whangarei District Council’s 2014/2015 Annual Plan asked the council to build a ba-sic inter city bus stop facility alongside the gas station. The submission stated, “Tourism is important to the local economy and needs decent facilities provided.” However, no funds were allocated for this purpose in the Council 2014/2015 budget.

Family day at the Waipu Golf Course in support of Anton’s Walk for HopeThis Sunday 1 February the Waipu Golf Club is hold-ing a Family Fun Day in support of the 809 Founda-tion, which aims to raise money to help people fund alternative treatments for cancer. Whangarei Policeman Anton Kuraia was diagnosed in April 2013 with acute myeloid leukemia, a type of blood cancer that is usually fatal within a few months. He spent 10 weeks in hospital and underwent two cy-cles of chemotherapy and was discharged in late July 2013 having been told his cancer was too aggressive and he would die within four to eight weeks. Anton overhauled his diet taking daily juice and ho-meopathic supplements as well as high doses of vi-

tamin C injections twice weekly. His cancer is now in remission, he is back at work and planning to walk the 809 kilometres to Wellington to raise money for cancer sufferers who can’t afford alternative treatments.

Mastitis Control 2015

Something beautiful has taken shape in a shed up in the hills just off Brooks Rd. in Waipu. For the past four months Tania Patterson has been working on this artwork, which she calls Flowers of the Sky for the biannual Headland Sculptures in the Gulf exhibition on Waiheke Island, which opened on Friday 23 January. Tania sent a tiny model to the exhibition selectors who approved of her concept.

shapes were cut on a laser. She bent them, polished and welded them together to form the dome. Finally came the arduous task of sanding and polishing. She made a polished wooden step to go at the entrance which she said softens the effect of the metal. The piece, which measures 3.2 metres in width, was lifted by crane and transported to Waiheke on a truck with pilot vehicles travelling in front and behind warning of the wide load. Tania had to book two vehicle places on the Waiheke ferry to transport the work to the island. The journey took place last Sunday evening. Once on Waiheke it was lifted by hand from the truck and carried down to the headland where it will be placed for the exhibition and Tania could breath a sigh of relief that it had got to its destination in one piece. Tania was looking forward to seeing it at the site it was designed for. The sculpture

shapes will cast shadows over the ground. Tania usually works as a jeweller, although she previously exhibited in the Sculptures in the Gulf exhibition eight years ago, just prior to the birth of her daughter. When her father died a year and a half ago Tania inherited his welding equipment. “I wanted to make something that he would have been proud of,” she said. The Headland Sculptures in the Gulf exhibition continues until 15 February. Tania’s Flowers of the Sky is one of 31 pieces selected by the judges from 120 submitted.

Theo Wortelboer, Ruakaka’s celebrated mechanic and tow truck driver died on 9 January of a chest condition which developed after a hip operation he underwent last year. Just how well respected Theo was in Ruakaka was given testimony by the big crowd, which turned up to his service. The little Catholic church in Peter Snell Rd., Ruakaka was full and the seats under a shade sail set up outside were all taken and people crowded in around the edges for shelter from the blazing sun.

Theo’s good friend Ross McKenzie gave the eulogy. Ross said he had met Theo 47 years ago. Theo, then aged 19, had not long come out from Holland to join his brothers Ben and Bill to work as a motor mechanic. Bill was the victim of a motor vehicle accident in Puhoe. Theo would often stop of on trips to Auckland to visit and tidy his grave. Theo’s father had also been a mechanic and from the time he was a small boy Theo had always been in the garage. As a young man his friends gave him the nickname Lampje – Dutch for light bulb as he was always bright and cheerful. Theo met his wife-to-be Trish when she left her car at his brother Ben’s mechanical workshop at Marsden Point on her way to work. Theo said, “I am going to ask that girl out when she comes back for her car.” After their marriage Theo and Trish moved to Onerahi, Theo working at a garage in Whangarei until Trish and Theo took the big step of buying the failing Ruakaka Motors. They took over the mechanical workshop and applied for a licence to sell petrol.

6 or 7pm at night. Ross said Theo had “strong family ties and a commitment to his trade.” Over the years he trained many apprentices, not just giving them skills as mechanics but life skills as well.Trish was his devoted help-mate and would often accompany Theo on late night call outs on his tow truck. It was on one of these late night jobs early in January 2006 that Theo lost his leg when a drunk driver drove into the back of a car which he was delivering to a Ruakaka Beach address. Theo was back at work in his Ruakaka garage and on his tow truck within a month of the accident “He was courageous, hard working, honest and warm hearted”, said Ross.“Over the years Theo and Ben have helped out numerous people who were a bit short of money. Inevitably this came at some cost to themselves but it shows what

Theo suffered another severe blow in January 2010 when Trish died. In 2011 Theo sold his Ruakaka business to his son-in-law and daughter, Robert and Nicola Potter, who have since on-sold it to Greg Wheat. Theo had big plans for his retirement. He wanted to travel and to entertain family and friends in the beautiful home he and Trish had purchased high on the hill alongside One Tree Point Road overlooking Ruakaka.

and learned to walk up and down stairs without the aid of a crutch and to ride a bicycle. Three years ago he met Wendy Fulcher. “Trish wouldn’t have wanted me just sitting around being miserable”, he said. Wendy and Theo travelled to Holland together to visit those of Theo’s family still living there. Their days together however were short as Theo developed a chest condition late last year, which progressed rapidly resulting in his death on January 9 2015.

“People are always complaining. We have had the district council and the regional council around. They haven’t found anything wrong”, said the middle-aged woman in a sunsuit who came out of a caravan on the southern side of the private camping ground on Hamon Rd. in Waipu.“We have been here for twelve years. What is the problem?”She agrees that the number of camp sites have grown in that time. “Well we didn’t have all the grandchildren back then. We are a big family, we have seven children and twenty grandchildren.”There are now 16 caravans or house buses on the site. These are left in place all year around and used by family members for holidays. Every summer the Crosbie family campground draws a number of complaints and queries to the Whangarei District Council. While some neighbours say they have no problem with it as it was occupied for only a few weeks each

Operators of commercial campgrounds pay considerable compliance costs and face regular inspections by Whangarei District Council staff to ensure they comply with a raft of environmental and public safety controls. Establishing a commercial campground in such a sensitive ecological site involves a lengthy, complex and expensive legal procedure as Paul Voss of Waipu Cove Cottages and Camping can testify. Paul Dell, the Council’s Group Manager for District Living said, each summer the Council receives a number of queries about the Crosbie camp.“We monitor it and all our inspections have shown that there are no issues.” “It is private property and non commercial, so it is not controlled under camping ground regulations. Because the buildings are not permanent and are not in permanent use, they do not breach any land use regulations. “There is good separation between the house buses and caravans which

Penny Johnston said she visited the Crosbie Camp on Thursday 15 January and found nothing amiss as “proper wastewater systems” have been installed.
