Tennessee Man’s Collection

Includes Divi-Divi Wood A piece of wood from a divi-divi tree, cut in Aruba, has ended a SU"

long one-way trip to the city of Chattanooga, Tennesee, where, shaped

as a gavel, it is part of the collection of a Tennessee banker.

The man is Louis J. Williams, vice president of the Ridgedale Bank

& Trust Company, a staunch forest and a skilled wood-worker in his

home workshop. For a number of

years he has been turning the gavels

out of woods from all over the world

and mounted them for display. His|

reason for his unique hobby is}

simple: ''Being interested in forestry

as a layman I thought that such an

exhibit would help stir up interest in

forestry. Some day I'll leave the col-

lection to a school of forestry where

it will serve a useful future propose.”

He already had more than 200

gavels made when he heard about

Aruba’s divi-divi tree, and he knew |

he needed some of its wood to make |

his collection really complete. So he}

Sigurd Espeland, for the past ten

years Norwegian vice consul in Aru-

ba and pastor of the Norwegian

Seamen’s Mission here, left for a

new assignment in Norway at the}

end of June. He was succeeded in|

both functions by Arthur Larsen,

formerly vice consul in Baltimore,

Maryland.

In closing out his association with |

Lago, Mr. Espeland wrote President |

heartiest thanks for the good co-

operation between your company

and me in my work here. I am leav-

ing with the best memories of every-

one with whom I have been con-

nected.”

visited by more than 15,000 seamen

from all countries, but especially

Scandinavia.

During his nearly 10 years in Aru-

ba, Mr. Espeland was well-known to

many Lago people and organizations,

especially in the Marine Department.

(where the only true cedars grow),

and dozens of trees native to the

Tennessee regions, like chinaberry

and prickly ash (also called the

"toothache tree’ because early sett-

lers used its bitter bark for medi-

cinal purposes).

Lago Given Safety OK By Insurance Expert

Lago is continuing its major efforts to make the refinery the safest one in the world.

In addition to the activities of the Safety Division, which reports safe practices and recommends procedures, and the Coin Your Ideas plan which turns up suggestions for safety devices and improvements |from the employees, and the Equip- ment Inspector group, Lago has re- cently concluded a survey of general conditions, performed with a special eye toward safety.

Doing the job was George Armi- stead, who operates his own consul- ting engineering firm in Washing- ton, and who undertakes risk ap- praisal of firms for insurance companies. Not long ago, shortly before Lago’s excess loss insurance policy ;came up for renewal, Mr. Armistead spent several days here looking things over from the angle of both the insured and the insurers.

The company has two types of insurance. One is excess loss or tastrophe insurance which protects the company in the event of major losses through fire or other damage. This is in the amount of $100 mil- lions, with one million deductible; that is the company absorbs the loss

of the first million, the insurance companies the rest.

liability damage policy to protect it from claims resulting from damage originating within the refinery to other property in disaster.

They call it Casa Cuna, "The

House of Cribs’, this stucco and

frame house that sits at the water’s Balashi, but that name

really convey the signifi-

cance of the place. More appropriate possibly would be something like

House of Love and Care, for

what it is.

It is a house of love and care for

upwards of 15 children, ranging in

from four weeks to six years,

parents are unable for one

another to care for them

properly. The ladies of Casa Cuna

take them in and lavish all the af-

fection they muster, which is

considerable.

It started out last February when

Mrs. Delia Hasham, a mother her-

self decided to go to work. While

looking for someone to care for her

own children she realized the great

lack of such facilities. So she went

to work on her own project for people just like herself.

If ever anything started from

scratch, Casa Cuna did. The first

step was acquiring a house near Ba-

lashi that was formerly a social club

with a lot of room. It started out

as easy as that.

This was not to be the usual] nur-

sery school where mothers would

leave children in the morning and

pick them up after work. This was

to be a genuine home, not necessari- ly for orphans or for children of

working mothers, or for abandoned

children, but for all of them. The

only entrance requirement was that

a child be free of communicable diseases and in reasonably good

health. Dr. A. M. van der Putten

comes by Casa Cuna once a week to

check on the children.

In no time at all the house was

filled to capacity, about 18. Some

of the original children are still

there, others have left, taken by pa-

rents now able to care for them.

In theory parents pay a guilder

and a half per day for each child.

In practice this doesn’t always hap-

pen, sometimes because there sim-

ply is no money to be had. In a case

like this, Mrs. Hasham and _ her

helpers always manage to get along

From the first, Casa Cuna won

and supporters. A sort of

corporation was set up to operate

it under the guardianship of Mrs.

Hasham. E. O. Petronia, of the con-

tracting firm of Petronia and Croes,

is chairman of the board and serving

with him on it are Fr. C. J. de Valk,

A. Nagtegaal, W. Arends, A. van

Vuurden, H. W. J. van der Weide,

and N. Pina. Administration of Ca-

sa Cuna is left strictly up to Mrs.

Hasham and her associates, all of

whom give freely of their time. They

At the present time there are 17 children living in Casa Cuna. All of them must eat, all of them must be bathed, dressed in clean clothes and provided with toys. Rent must be paid, electricity paid, water paid, food prepared, laundry run, floors scrubbed. Discounting the considerable physical work of running the house, it all takes money. Expenses are currently touching Fls. 500. This is met largely by donations of cash and materials from friends and island organizations. A group of

More than 550,000 American tra-

vellers spent 117 million dollars in

the Caribbean area last year, says a

report by Mr. H. H. Kelly, of the

U. S. Department of Commerce In-

ternational Travel Division. This was

30 percent more than in 1955. Fi-

gures for the U. S. - controlled ter-

ritories in the area are not included.

Apart from the more familiar sour-

ces of publicity, the current interest

in calypso music is drawing tourists

to the Caribbean, Mr. Kelly said.

sweep of the events.

A charming description of election night in rural America before the days of radio is the big feature in a curious newspaper that belongs to D. J. Pieters of Process Accounting.
