    COSMIC THEOLOGY

    Geo. T. Weaver

The Solar System, as its nameimplies, is a combination of parts intoone unit, a whole; an orderly arrange-ment according to a common law; agroup of planets or worlds so related toeach other as to indicate method in theirformation and in their movements.Being a system, it is complete in itself, though it may be related to other sys-

tems in harmony with itself, and all thesub-systems combined constituting agreater system. Being a system ofworlds, it is scientifically arranged andforms the basis of the science ofAstronomy. That is, it is without vari-ability, so that once its laws have beendiscovered, one may know exactly whatto look for and will never be disappoint-ed in his expectations.

The word Solar designates thecharacter of the system; and as the

adjective refers to the Sun, it indi-cates that the system is dominated bythe Sun. Science contends that the

Sun originated, as well as controls, the system. If the Sun can be thoughtof as a father, this would be the fami-ly name, the Solar family.

The system is teeming with life andmotion, forever on the move; and thequestion given us to solve is, to whatis this due? Three answers are given.Atheism contends that it is wholly

fortuitive, the result of mere chance.Theists of the exoteric school regardthe planets as composed of inert mat-ter, and as propelled and guided intheir movements by an intelligent andall-powerful being they call God, justas an engine, controlled by an engi-neer, propels the machinery of a fac-tory. Esoteric theists contend that

each planet is a living organism, pos-sessing an intelligent soul, that isitself the creator or generator of theform, and that guides it in its everymovement, just as any man is a livingsoul, which originated his body andcontrols its activities. This last idea isthe basis of Cosmic Theology. Theplanets they regard as constituting a

hierarchy of subordinate deities, eachwith its own inherent spirit, and theSun as the Divine Father of them all.

But cosmic theology goes fartherand embraces in this system all livingorganisms dwelling upon all the plan-

ets, each of which is a microscopicimage or likeness of the whole; espe-cially is this true of mankind. The

thought is that the whole systemregarded as a unit is Deity in hisentirety in the cosmic sense, calledthe Macrocosm, or universal cosmicorder, all-embracing; and that man, being a miniature of the whole is eacha microcosm.

Now if man is a miniature of thewhole system, he is the Sun, Moon

and planets all within his make up.This is according to the law of corre-spondence recognized by every greatreligion of the world and expressed intheir sacred books. Our Bibledeclares that God created man in hisown likeness and image. If man is aminiature of the whole, his entirebody may appropriately be compared

to the space occupied by the wholesystem, in miniature, divided into thetwelve signs or houses, from Aries atthe head, to Pisces at the feet. He isthen a miniature Deity within him-self, superior and inferior, with hisentire body as the playground of thegods; and the world in which we liveas the field of operation and expres-

sion, and the theatre of experienceand evolution.

As a deity in miniature, each is acosmic god in the making; thereforethe mission given to each is to unfoldhis own individuality, in order to do

which each must worship at home, that is, the god centralized within hisown being; this is worshipping God

in spirit and in truth, as we areenjoined by the great Master. This isidealizing the divine self, or the Ego,and by worship, in all that itembraces, lifting the whole manupwards toward this ideal.

Man never can be his best, nor canhe attain his high ambitions in anysphere by submitting his will into the

keeping of another, and this is true inreligion as in the practical world. Thus the Bible forbids us to worshipthe heavenly host, not because theyare not cosmic deities, but because toworship any being extraneous ordetached is idolatry, even though it beJesus the Christ, who forbade his dis-ciples to worship him. All gods out-

side are but symbols, the Christincluded, whose offices it is to aid,but not to control. To yield to the willof God, then, means to yield to onesown best self.

This whole subject is a great mys-tery. Ordinary religionists discard themystical and follow the letter, chieflybecause they are not sufficiently

developed to grasp the deeper innertruth. They are kindergartenish intheir religion, purely elementary; butnot to be despised or to be combatedany more than children should be bygraduates from the universities. The

law is, first the natural, then the spir-itual. But worship in spirit and intruth embraces the mystical. Paul,

who was the chief mystic among theapostles, declared that Great is themystery of godliness, God was mani-fest in flesh. Again he said that thegreat mystery that had been hiddenfrom the foundation of the world hadbeen revealed to him, which wasChrist in you the hope of glory.

It has been said that An honest

man is the noblest work of God, butRobert Ingersoll, reversing the say-ing, said. An honest God is thenoblest work of man. This wouldimply that ones idea of Deity is him-self idealized. This is the usual wayof thinking of God, the inductiveprocess of arguing from effect tocause. And this would not be an

incorrect method if man fully knew, and perfectly controlled himself. Butthe method to be followed by thewriter in this course of articles is tounfold the macrocosmic thought, which, as has been shown, is a sci-ence, and therefore absolutely cor-rect, in both its nature and influence, and then to make the application to

the microcosm. The cosmic deitieswill be regarded as symbols to be fol-lowed, as those who in other ages hadwon the race and reached their des-tinies, and now, as elder brothers, areassisting us in the race, and aiding us

I have been asked to say a fewwords on the influence of color vibra-tions, but sound and color are so inti-mately correlated in the psychicworld that to talk of the one languageinspires or visualizes the other, andtherefore I shall also speak of Music.

In this direction lie many fascinatingby-paths of thought and experiment. That we live in a world of vibrationswhich ceaselessly beat on the physi-cal organism, and of which we sensebut a limited range by means of eye, ear, smell, and touch is a fact not tobe gainsaid; and this thought bringsanother, which is that many of us

have a longer range of these percep-tions than the normal individual pos-sesses. So many persons have told meof transcendent experiences in color-vision, some of them identical, thatpersonally I cannot but believe that

there is a near and radiant world ofpure color and exquisite music, which in time we shall all explore and

revel in at our leisure, and to our last-ing benefit. Clairaudience and clair-voyance are both supernormal in ourpresent age, but that they are not per-fectly natural attributes of the evolvedman, I would deny, and I often feelthat we have paid very dearly for ourWestern Civilization, by losing manyfine perceptions and enjoyments dur-

ing its construction. For the greed ofgold, the lust of power, the loss ofspirituality, which are the signs of amaterial age, now happily passing tomake room for nobler ideals, couldhave had no place in the early days ofelder civilizations, when the Sons ofGod walked the earth in all their radi-ance. When none but he of Kingly

heart and noble thought could occupya throne, for his radiant spiritual bodywas visible to the smallest child, andno mistake could be made. He reignedby right Divine of inherent power andspirituality. Now-a-days the gloriousgolden halo and purple aura of theKing initiate can no longer be seen byhis poorest subject, and we have but

the symbol of what has been in thematerial gold crown and the purplecoronation robe. That the old paintershad an intuitive perception of thetruth, we may be sure as we view thevery carefully depicted nimbus round

the head of a saint, and the way inwhich the same colors are used forHoly People. I do not remember hav-

ing seen a picture of the BlessedVirgin without her blue robe. Bluebeing symbolical of aspiration, purity, and sincerity. Sometimes, a touch ofred or pink is added to show that inaddition to these virtues she possessedthe human Mother love, withoutwhich no woman can be perfect, andwhich dignifies the most frivolous

specimen of girlhood. St. Joseph, again, is always dressed in yellowthe symbol of Arcane wisdom andmeditation. Again we reverentlyregard the white robe of the Saviorsymbolical of the High Priest andInitiate, for in the white light of illu-mination all colors blend and meet.

In a subconscious way, too, we are

aware of color influences. How oftenwe speak of a grey day and truly indepression and grief, occultists tell us,that the naturally clear and beautifulcolors of the aura are barred with lividgrey. The pink of condition is anotherphrase which signifies quite an oppo-site state of things. Any clairvoyantwill tell us that the aura of a healthy

person is permeated with beautifulrose red lines, the psychic nerves as itwere, along which the solar vitalityrushes.

Another frequent expression is trueblue, which is always used to describe

someone whose character is loyal, aspiring, and above reproachone wecan trust.

Born to the purple we say of one ofhigh destiny, who holds the fate of anation in his hand, and has an envi-ronment of culture and refinement.Sometimes, alas, only luxury is signi-fied by the expression, for we forgetthat a purple aura suggests an uplifter, and Savior of Humanity, for Violet orPurple unites within itself the Rose

Red of Affection, with the Blue ofDevotion and Aspiration.

Mrs. Watts Hughes has for manyyears experimented to show how closeis the connection between music andcolor. She has invented an instrumentcalled an eidophone, into which shesings (she has a glorious voice) and onthe top is a disc of India rubber, slight-

ly hollow, which receives the sounds. She finds that by putting variousmaterials on the disc, she gets verywonderful and beautiful results.Sometimes, she places moist colors, and then when a certain note is sound-ed, the colors are built up into flowers. Thus, she can make a daisy by singingcertain notes, and pansies too, very

tiny, but exquisitely beautiful, areformed in response to certain music. Itsounds like a fairy tale, doesnt it? butit is perfectly true, and I give theseresults from a demonstration whichdelighted the Camera Club of London,

some time ago. But, there is morebehind this, which we can dimly per-ceive. In the Old Book the wonders of

Creation are described thus: AndGod said, Let there be light, and therewas light. Does it not seem to youthat, simple and dignified as thesewords are, what they really convey isthat God sang, for Music is one of ourFathers languages, and immediately,in harmonious sequence and magnifi-cent order, clouds of color were mar-

shalled into a transcendent pageantwhich the 1st Chapter of Genesisdescribes; and under the influence ofthe Divine Music, the beauties of thenatural world in all their Glory cameinto being. For Light is Color, andColor is Light, and the two are wed-ded to sound. No wonder that thestars sang together and the Sons of

God shouted for joy, at the wondroussight.

Very interesting conclusions havebeen arrived at by scientific experi-menters. Thus, in agriculture, by usingvarious colored glasses over seeds, itis found that the blue ray retardsgrowth and the red stimulates it, andin the case of corn, there is a chemical

change in the seed itself, more nitro-gen being generated in the wheatgrown under green glass than of anyother color. In many asylums for theinsane, color treatments are beingused with successful results. To stimu-

late the despondent, redhangings andfurnishings are used. To soothe andcalm the unduly excited, blue is suc-

cessful. And for general toning up ofthe mental system, yellow isemployed. In our homes and personalarrangements, especially those whichrelate to our children, we shall be wiseto make use of suitable color schemes.A lazy, indolent child will be greatlyhelped by wearing red. A bad tem-pered one should wear blue or soft

grey. One who is stupid or studieswith difficulty will be mentally stimu-lated by the yellow ray. For such achild, I would have a pane of yellowglass put in his room, and while study-ing, let him wear a yellow silk hand-kerchief round his head.

We should avoid Greens andBrowns, except Nile Green, that beau-

tiful shade between Green and blue, because the former colors are connect-ed with the lower passions, selfishnessand greed being shown forth inBrown, and spite and jealousy in theGreen vibration, and we wish to leavethese dormant, and unexcited. I amtold that many businessmen have avery bright Brown in their aura, which

shows forth shrewdness and foresight,so it is not altogether bad, but dulldirty shades should be avoided.

In decorating our homes, weshould keep to the pure tones of pri-mary colors: Red, Yellow, and Blue.

There is a delightful scale of tones tobe had in each, and we cannot go veryfar wrong in using Blue for sleeping

apartments, or those used for psychicdevelopment, Yellow and Orange forlibrary and study, andRedfor refecto-ries and dining rooms, as that colorstimulates the appetite; but muchdepends on temperament, and I wouldbar Red altogether in a quarrelsome, irritable family, and use soothingshades for all purposes. In photo-

graphic factories it has been foundnecessary to substitute green for redglass, as the red caused great irritabil-ity and restlessness among the workers.

In this connection, it is interestingto note that Madame de Rambouillet, when she founded her Salon andshowed the French Court how the vir-tuous wife could be a greater influ-

ence than the courtesan, who hithertohad held sway, was very careful in herchoice of color. Her room was calledthe Blue Salon, from the color of thewalls, and she used crystal glass andflowers in abundance. The Blue wasquite an innovation, as at that timeshades of Red and Tan were consid-ered the thing for decoration, and as

all the world knows, the SalonRambouillet instituted a new era ofrefinement and ideality among thewomen of the French race.

Now I will give you the six colorsof heraldry, and their meaning accord-

ing to Ruskin, that master of color, and will conclude with a letter fromone who is, in my estimation an

authority on mystic matters. As you all know, there is a deep

significance in the blazonry of aShield or Coat of Arms.

Ruskin places Or, or Gold. first. The heraldic name of which is the Sunof Justice, and stands for the strengthand honor of all men, and this is quitein a line with what psychic investiga-

tion has taught us, that, the man inwhose aura gold predominates is fol-lowing the path of the intellect andacquiring Arcane Wisdom. Such men, rightly active, are living sunshine.

The next is Gules or Rose color, from the Persian gule, a rose. This isthe color of love, fulfillment of joy.The Greeks had a pretty custom of

shaping their vases for precious per-fume like a rose. Those who are fol-lowing the path of Rose are on theway of love, love in all natural andbeautiful forms, devoted Mothers, those who express themselves inmusic, poetry, or art. It has its thorns, and often mistakes are made, but thepath of feeling and emotion is a very

noble one.The third is Azure which signifies

the fulfillment of love and joy inHeaven, as the Rose color is the ful-fillment of love and joy on Earth.

Those who are on the Azure ray are

    8/62

Mystics, and Poets, ever seeking tobring something of Heavenly purityand beauty to illuminate the dark

places of Earth. The fourth is Ecarlate or

Carnation, the body of man its beauty, the maids scarlet blush in noblelovethe youths scarlet glow innoble war the dye of the earth. It isclosely allied to Orange, which givesgreat physical magnetism. Ourbrethren of this ray should give them-

selves in all kinds of physical andmaterial service to their fellowmen.

The fifth is Vert or Green, andthose on this ray, are distinguished bysympathy and devotion, for it is thecolor of youth born in the spirit, and inHoly Writ we are told of A Rainbowround about the throne, like unto anemerald and we wonder if this tran-

scendent halo be composed of theprayers of those who follow the wayof Devotion.

Purple or Violet, the Kingly color, concludes Ruskins list. It is Rosecolor chastened with Blue. The Colorof Love in noble or divine sorrowborne by all Kingly Souls. These sixcolors give the angelic Iris of the light

and Covenant of Life. That color harmonies, whether

arranged by man or seen in our gor-geous landscapesthe Sunset andDawn limned by the Divine Artisthave a very real significance and

influence, no one can doubt. Chopin,we are told, drew his magicalmelodies from the inspiration of the

Dresden Art Gallery, and those whohave psychic vision visualize Corotsexquisite landscape, while Chopinsmusic is being played. The deepforests and great quiet lakes of hisnative land are painted in the music ofGrieg. Beethoven also was in the habitof wandering through fields and laneswith a musical note book, working up

the suggestions of color into vast har-monial movements. The spring songof Mendelssohn builds up the daintiestfiligree forms. While the stately con-ceptions of our great tone Poet,Wagner, is a series of embattlementsin glorious color.

Dear Friend,You have studied the influences of

color for some time, but there is yetmuch for you to learn, for those influ-ences are as marked and varied asonly an infinity of tones can express, and there are many that your eye atpresent is unable to cognize.

To achieve any marked sensitive-ness to the color languages, which arespeaking very definitely round you,

you must thinkin color.Close your eyes, and let the waves

of exquisite tints from the desireworld sweep over your Soul.

When you meet a friend, or at anytime when observing people, try to

look beyond the bodily presence, which is but a crude manifestation ofthe Soul, and sense the colors of

which that Soul, as the garment of thespirit, is composed.

This faculty will not be yours all atonce, but by perseverance and regular-ity, in continually seeking spiritualaspects, you will at last behold thehuman aura with the radiant presenti-ment of its qualities in exquisite colorschemes, glowing and opalescing, as

waves of thought sweep through it andacross.

This opening of the inward Visionmade the Transfiguration a never-to-be-forgotten moment, to those privi-leged to witness it, for the Christ Spiritmust have exhibited such gloriousharmonies as no earthly languagecould express, and one can enter into

Peters desire to remain in ecstasy forever, just bathing in its HeavenlyRadiance.

And, remember too, how Mosesbrought with him some of the Glory ofhis communion with the Father, thebrightness being so great that he hadto veil his face.

    The judgement of perception of

what an aura conveys should be maderather on the translucence and purityof the whole, than from the propertiesbelonging to the several colors. Aheavy, dull, murky-looking aura, eventhough the fundamental scheme be

Blue, Violet, or Rose, those particular-ly consecrated to spiritual qualities, isnot the evidence of such a radiant per-

sonality, as the bright, clear Red orGreen of the lower nature, if they scin-tillate and opalesce with life, andstretch far away from the body instrong contours.

Nevertheless, each color is a sym-bol of one aspect of the seven rayedLight or Logos from which all derivelife.

The Violet symbolizes the Priestand Initiate.

TheBlue, the Mystic of gentle andspiritual aspirations.

The Yellow, the philosopher, theaspirant for Wisdom, The Solomon.

The Green shows the sympathizerwith Human sufferingThe desire tohelp and heal.

The Redgives the man of feeling, the emotions of Human Love in allnatural aspectsThe artist.

The Orange stands for Health inthe Body, and Individuality of outlookThe worker.

The Purple, The man who com-bines the Rose of compassion with theBlue of the Mysticthe Savior of

menthe elder Brother of the race. All these, in their due proportions,

become united in the white rose, which combines all colors in its spiri-tual beauty and stands for completerealization and atonement. The union

of the Son with the FatherThe pathof Discipleship takes man along eachseparate ray in the seven ages of

Being, to develop the qualities ofPriest, Mystic, Philosopher,Sympathizer, Artist, Worker, andfinally Saviour of men, who unites theHuman and Spiritual, and the consum-mation in the white Rose of purity.

Viewed in this light, your colorstudies will give you a broad outlookon life, and a gentle judgment of men

and things. For to understand all is topardon all. We are each one develop-ing along a different ray of the onewhite light; nor can we, without dan-ger, diverge from our path, which ismarked out. Every way to the Cross issurrounded by its special temptationsand dangers. And it is difficult at ourpresent stage to be loyal to our own

conditions and service, and yet sym-pathize with the methods of anotherSoul.

The Priest and Saviour alone havethat wide sympathy with mankind, which makes them deal gently andunerringly with the mistakes of theiryounger brethren.

We, some of us of the Red vibra-

tion, whose emotions are such a fear-ful joy, yet also a source of temptationand sorrow, must learn to consecrateourselves to great issues, and lay ourgifts whether as Artist, Actor, Poet, orMusician, on the altar of Humanity,

and use our Love Nature in its highestexpressions.

Those of the Green must use their

individuality to concentrate on Humansuffering, and their sympathy to workfor its amelioration.

The Philosopher of the YellowLight must voice his message in nouncertain tone, and as he receives theWisdom of the Spirit, give with bothhands to thirsting Souls, ever pointingthe way to those who seek. The mys-

tic of theBlue ray must consecrate hisgifts to spiritual uses, and neverdegrade them by accepting materialgain for service on the psychic plane. His occultism must be that of the hid-den way of prayer, for to pray is tolabor. The worker of the Orangevibration must seek the path of physi-cal work, in practical help, and the

amelioration of social conditions. All have their part to play in min-

istry to others and their own properdevelopment. Each is a letter in Godsalphabet, without which the perfectword cannot be formed, or as aninstrument in the Heavenly Orchestra, which, if unattuned, causes discord inthe whole theme. Let us, therefore,

attune ourselves to the infinite, withhearts in the Silence, and hands out-stretched to serve, patiently andhumbly walk along our allotted pathin life, and strive to fulfill its obliga-tions.

    RELATION BETWEEN SOUL

    AND MIND

QuestionWe have had some dis-cussion in our classes regarding thesoul, some confusion of opinionexists. What is the relation between

the soul and the mind, are the forcesof both permanently united to thespirit? Which body will be used in thelater stages of development, theMental or the Soul body?

AnswerWe will turn for ouranswer to 366 of the Cosmo. Therewe find a chart which embodies the

whole scheme of involution and evo-lution. It is not a very complicatedchart either, and the student whowishes to master the mystery of exis-tence would do well to thoroughlymemorize this diagram.

Reading on the left side thereof, welearn that during a stage of uncon-scious evolution the spirit grew a

three-fold body and crystallized intoit. This was the dense body, the vitalbody and the desire body. In the earthperiod, the focus of mind was given, and this becomes the fulcrum uponwhich involution turns to evolution. Then a three-fold stage of conscious

evolution commences during whichthe growth of a three-fold soul isaccomplished by spiritualizing thethree bodies into the soul. We findthat in the remainder of the EarthPeriod we extract the conscious soulfrom the dense body; in the Jupiter

Period the intellectual soul isextracted from the vital body; in theVenus Period we extract the emotion-al soul from the desire body; and inthe Vulcan Period we become cre-ative intelligence by amalgamation ofthe three-fold soul with the mind.

In order to make this more clear,we will turn to page 421 where there

is a chapter on Alchemy and Soul-Growth. There we read as follows:

    Alchemy and Soul-Growth

The dense body was started in theSaturn Period, passed through vari-ous transformations in the Sun andMoon Periods, and will reach itshighest development in the EarthPeriod.

The vital body was started in theSun Period, was reconstructed in theMoon and Earth Periods, and willreach perfection in the Jupiter Period, which is its fourth stage, as the EarthPeriod is the fourth stage for the

dense body. The desire body was started in

the Moon Period, reconstructed in the

Earth Period, will be further modifiedin the Jupiter Period, reaching perfec-tion in the Venus Period.

Reference to diagram 8 will showthat the lowest Globe of the JupiterPeriod is located in the EthericRegion. It would therefore be impos-sible to use the dense physical vehiclethere, as only a vital body can be used

in the Etheric Region. Yet it must notbe supposed that after spending thetime from the beginning of the SaturnPeriod to the end of the Earth Periodin completing and perfecting thisbody, it is then thrown away that manmay function in a higher vehicle!

Nothing in Nature is wasted. Inthe Jupiter Period the forces of the

dense body will be superimposed onthe vital body. That vehicle will thenpossess the powers of the dense bodyin addition to its own faculties andwill therefore be a much more valu-able instrument for the expression ofthe threefold spirit, than if built fromits own forces alone.

Similarly, Globe D of the Venus

Period is located in the Desire World(see diagram 8), hence neither adense nor a vital body could be usedas an instrument of consciousness;therefore the essences of the perfect-ed dense and vital bodies are incorpo-

rated in the completed desire body, the latter thus becoming a vehicle oftranscendent qualities, marvelously

adaptable and so responsive to theslightest wish of the indwelling spiritthat in our present limitations, it isbeyond our utmost conception.

Yet the efficiency of even thissplendid vehicle will be transcendedwhen in the Vulcan Period itsessence, together with the essences ofthe dense and vital bodies, are added

to the mind, which becomes thehighest of mans vehicles, contain-

ing within itself the quintessence of

all that was best in all the vehicles.

The vehicle of the Venus Periodbeing beyond our present power ofconception, how much more so is thatwhich will be at the service of thedivine beings of the Vulcan Period!

During involution the creativeHierarchies assisted man to arouseinto activity the three-fold spirit, theEgo, to build the three-fold body, andto acquire the link of mind. Now,however, on the seventh day (to usethe language of the bible) God rests.Man must work out his own salva-tion. The three-fold spirit must com-

plete the working out of the planbegun by the Gods.

The human spirit, which wasawakened during Involution in theMoon Period, will be the most promi-nent of the three aspects of the spirit

14 RAYS FROM THE ROSE CROSS

in the evolution of the Jupiter Period, which is the corresponding Period onthe upward arc of the spiral. The life

spirit, which was started into activityin the Sun Period, will manifest itsprincipal activity during the corre-sponding Venus Period, and the par-ticular influences of the Divine Spiritwill be strongest in the VulcanPeriod, because it was vivified in thecorresponding Saturn Period.

All three aspects of the spirit are

active all the time during evolution, but the principal activity of eachaspect will be unfolded in those par-ticular periods, because the work tobe done there is its special work.

When the threefold spirit hadevolved the threefold body andgained control of it through the focusof mind, it commenced to evolve the

threefold soul by working from with-in. How much or how little soul aman has depends upon the amount ofwork the spirit has done in the bodies. This has been explained in the chap-ter describing post mortem experi-ences. (See pages 95 & 96, Cosmo.)

As much of the desire body as hasbeen worked upon by the Ego is

transmuted into the emotional soul, and is ultimately assimilated by thehuman spirit, the special vehicle ofwhich is the desire body.

As much of the vital body as hasbeen worked upon by the life spirit,

becomes the Intellectual soul, and itbuilds the life spirit, because thataspect of the threefold spirit has its

counterpart in the vital body.As much of the dense body as has

been worked upon by the DivineSpirit, because the dense body is itsmaterial emanation.

The conscious soul grows byaction, external impacts, and experi-ence.

The emotional soul grows by the

feeling and emotions generated byactions and experiences.

The intellectual soul, as mediatorbetween the other two, grows by theexercise of memory, by which it linkstogether past and present experiencesand the feeling engendered thereby, thus creating sympathy andantipathy, which could not exist

apart from memory, because the feel-ings resulting from experience alonewould be evanescent.

During involution the spirit pro-gressed by growing bodies, but evo-lution depends upon soul growththe transmutation of the bodies intosoul. The soul is, so to say, the quin-tessence, the power or force of the

body, and when a body has beencompletely built and brought to per-fection through the stages and peri-ods as above described, the soul isfully extracted therefrom and isabsorbed by the one of the three

aspects of the spirit which generatedthe body in the first place; thus:

    The Conscious soul will be

    absorbed by the divine spirit in theseventh Revolution of the JupiterPeriod;

    The Intellectual soul will beabsorbed by the life spirit in the sixthrevolution of the Venus Period;

The Emotional soul will beabsorbed by the human spirit in thefifth revolution of the Vulcan Period.

So much for the evolution of soul.We will now turn to the mind and thevarious stages which bring it to per-fection.

We read on page 426 of theCosmo:

At the present time, however, themind is not focused in a way that

enables it to give a clear and true pic-ture of what the spirit imagines. It isnot one-pointed. It gives misty andclouded pictures. Hence the necessityof experiment to show the inadequa-cies of the first conception, and bringabout new imaginings and ideas, untilthe image produced by the spirit inmental substance has been repro-

duced in physical substance. At best, we are able to shape

through the mind only such images ashave to do with Form, because thehuman mind was not started until theEarth Period, and therefore is now in

its form, or mineral stage, hencein our operations we are confined toforms, to minerals. We can imagine

ways and means of working with themineral forms of the three lowerkingdoms, but can do little or nothingwith living bodies. We may indeedgraft living branches to a live tree, orliving parts of animal or man to otherliving parts, but it is not life which weare working; it is form only. We aremaking different conditions, but the

life which already inhabited the formcontinues to do so still. To create isbeyond mans power until the mind

    has become alive.

In the Jupiter Period the mind willbe vivified to some extent and mancan then imagine forms which willlive and grow, like plants.

In the Venus Period, when his mind

has acquired feeling he can createliving, growing, and feeling things.

When he reaches perfection, at theend of the Vulcan Period, he will beable to imagine into existence crea-tures that will live, grow, feel andthink.

In the Saturn Period the life wavewhich is now man started on its evo-

lution. The Lords of Mind were thenhuman. They worked with man atthat Period, when he was mineral. They now have nothing to do with thelower kingdoms, but are concernedsolely with our human development.

Our present animals started theirmineral existence in the Sun Period,at which time the Archangels were

human; therefore the Archangels arethe rulers and guides of the evolutionof that which is now animal, but havenothing to do with plant or mineral.

The present plants had their min-eral existence in the Moon Period. The Angels were then human, there-fore they have special concern withthe life that now inhabits the plants,

to guide it up to the human stage; butthey have no interest in the minerals.

Our present humanity will have towork with the new life wave whichentered evolution in the Earth Periodand now ensouls the minerals. We arenow working with it by means ofthe faculty of imagination, giving itformbuilding it into ships, bridges,

railways, houses, etc.In the Jupiter Period we shall

guide the evolution of the plant king-dom, for that which is at present min-eral will then have a plant-like exis-tence and we must work with it thereas the Angels are now doing with ourplant kingdom. Our faculty of imagi-nation will be so developed that we

shall have the ability, not only to cre-ate forms by means of it, but toendow those forms with vitality.

In the Venus Period our presentmineral life wave shall haveadvanced another step, and we shall

be doing for the animals of that peri-od what the Archangels are nowdoing for our animalsgiving them

living and feeling forms.Lastly, in the Vulcan Period it will

be our privilege to give them a ger-minal mind, as the Lords of Mind didto us. The present mineral will thenhave become the humanity of theVulcan Period, and we shall havepassed through stages similar to thosethrough which the Angels and

Archangels are now passing. We shallthen have reached a point in evolu-tion a little higher than that of the pre-sent Lords of Mind, for remember, there is never an exact reproductionanywhere, but always progressiveimprovement, because of the spiral.

The Divine spirit will absorb thehuman spirit at the close of the

Jupiter Period; the Life spirit at theclose of the Venus period; and theperfected Mind, embodying all that ithas garnered during its pilgrimagethrough all the seven Periods, will beabsorbed by the Divine Spirit at theclose of the Vulcan Period.

From the foregoing it will be clearthat there is a distinct evolution of

soul and another equally distinct evo-lution of mind, yet they are not at allindependent of one another, but workin perfect unison, as, for instance, heart and lungs work together to keepup the rhythm of the body. Therefore

it will be neither the mental, nor the soulbody that we shall use in the later stagesof our development, but a compositevehicle containing increasingly the

essence of all our bodies, which will

then be a composite garment of the spir-it, so wonderful and glorious that it isbeyond even our faintest conception atthe present time.

in the last two thousand years underPisces-Virgo and Catholicism; and thetwo thousand years which are ahead of us,

called theAquarian Age, where the signsAquarius and Leo are illuminated andvivified by the solar precession for theupliftment of the Son of Man (Aquarius)by the Christ within, the Lion of Judah(Leo), to the estate of Superman.

It must not be thought however, that theAtlantean Epoch only lasted while theSun by precession went through Cancer,

Gemini, and Taurus, a period of only sixthousand and a few hundred years; farfrom it; but there are spirals within spiralsand recapitulation takes place in theEpochs and races, so that we may knowwhat is the general destiny by looking atthe Suns passage through these signs andtherewith taking this import and symbol-ism into consideration. It may also be said

that the further we advance the smaller dothe spirals become, the shorter the time inwhich a given improvement is made, because of the proficiency we attained informer ages, and therefore it is extremelyprobable that this present is the last lap, that the coming Aquarian age is the final

    EVOLUTION

    AS SHOWN IN THE ZODIAC

(Continued)When we consider the Zodiac in its reli-

gious, as well as its evolutionary aspects,by means of the six pairs of oppositesigns into which the twelve may be divid-ed, we also commence with Cancer andCapricorn for the reason given in the pre-vious article; namely, that these are thesolstitial points where the Sun reaches its

highest and lowest declination.Considered in this manner, we find that

there are two sets of three pairs of signs, namely: Cancer and Capricorn, Geminiand Sagittarius, Taurus and Scorpio. Inthese three pairs of signs we may read thehistory of human evolution and religion,in the early, the middle and the latter thirdof the Atlantean Epoch. In the other three

pairs of signs: Aries and Libra, Pisces andVirgo, Aquarius and Leo, we find the keyto mans development during the AryanEpoch. This is also divisible into threedistinct periods, namely: theAryan Age,from Moses to Christ, which comes underAries-Libra; thePiscean Age,which takes

    17/62

preparatory school day which will fit usfor the new age, the Sixth Epoch, and thatthat will begin when the Sun by preces-sion enters Capricorn.

This, of course, would mean that theSecond Advent must take place justbefore that time, and though it seems to usthat so many signs point that way, this is amere surmise and may not have any truthin it at all. Thousands of people have beenmisled during all the ages that we knowof, to think that Christ would soon behere; it is however, better that we arelooking forward to it than if we should say

with some, that it will never take place. Inthat case the Great Day will find us unpre-pared and we should find ourselvesamong the stragglers who are until toattend the wedding feast of the higher Selfto the lower because lacking the soul-body which is the wedding garmentthat enfolds them.

    CANCERCAPRICORN

The Suns passage by precessionthrough the sphere of Cancer with itsopposite sign Capricorn, designates theearly third of the Atlantean period, whichwas intensely watery, as the whole earthwas surrounded by a dense drenching fog,and the Niebelung, or Children of theMist, lived then in the basins of theEarth. Cancer was not then represented bythe same symbol as today; in ancienttimes, it was pictorially figured as a bee-tle or scarab. This was the signature of thesoul, for then mankind was much lessbody than soul.

The sign Cancer is watery in its nature,

and the fish part of Capricorn in the oppo-site sign also helps to symbolize this stateof life under water when the Sun wentthrough the watery sign Cancer by preces-sion. The Moon, the planet of fecundationpoints mystically to this period of germi-nation, when mankind first commenced toexercise the Creative function at the dic-tates of desire inculcated by the LuciferSpirits. Thus they opened the Gate ofphysical Life through Cancer, and strayedinto the terrestrial sphere, but oppositestood Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn, readyto slay them with his scythe, and usher

them through the Gate of Death back intothe spiritual realms where they are athome.

    GEMINISagittarius

Our condition during the middle third ofthe Atlantean Epoch is illustrated in theSuns passage through the sign Gemini, the twins, which aptly represent infant

humanity. During this age the division ofsoul from soul by the veil of flesh, whichwe call the body, became more noticeable, for the atmosphere had already cleared toa considerable extent, and the faculties ofthe spirit had became more focused in itsphysical instrument. With this delusion ofthe personal self, there came at once theidea of me and thee, mine andthine, our individual interests com-menced to clash with those of others, sothat a tragedy such as that recordedbetween Cain and Abel, became possible.Nor was the shedding of blood confinedto human beings, for we learn from theBible that Nimrod was a mighty hunter.

This savage ideal was expressed in theCelestial Centaur, Sagittarius, with hisbow and arrow.

But both of these pairs of opposites:Cancer-Capricorn and Gemini-Sagittarius, may be considered pre-his-toric hieroglyphics of a developmentaccomplished in Sidereal years, long past, though none the less important on thataccount. Our own times, with the devel-opment prescribed for them, are symboli-cally represented in the four pairs of signs

within the fixed cross: the Bull, the Lion, the Serpent and the Man.

For that reason the two pairs of oppo-sites comprising the fixed signs, Taurus-Scorpio, and Leo-Aquarius, are men-tioned in the Bible, and we shall find thatour modern systems of religion are full ofallusions to the signs which lie betweenthem, namely, the three pairs of opposites:

Aries-Libra, Pisces-Virgo, and Aquarius-Leo. These three pairs of opposites are, asalready stated, emblematic of the devel-opment in the early third of the AryanEpoch, the Sun by precession wentthrough the sign Aries, themiddle third ofthe Aryan Epoch finds the Sun in Pisces,by precession, and during the last third ofthis Epoch the Sun will go through thesign Aquarius. Then the solstitial pointCapricorn will see the inauguration of anew cycle or age.

The spiritual preparation for this devel-opment commenced about thirteen thou-sand B.C. when the Sun by precession, was in the sign Libra, the Balance, the last

time, and different phases of this germinalimpregnation of the people then livingwere carried on during the precessionaltravel of the Sun through Virgo, Leo, andculminated in Cancer about eight thou-sand B.C. when the last of Atlantis wasdestroyed by water, substantially as relat-ed by the Egyptian priests to Plato, andwe shall see presently how those germinalideals, given to humanity in those far, bygone days have grown and doweredinto factors of human development andspiritual Standards of the greatest impor-tance.

    TAURUSSCORPIO

In the latter third of Atlantis, Egoismhad developed to a far greater degree thanbefore, the spiritual sight had been lost bythe larger majority of the people who thenlived entirely on the material plane andgloried particularly in their material pos-sessions.

The Bull was very properly worshipedby them, it was an emblem of strengthnecessary to conquer the material world,it was on account of its prodigiousstrength, an invaluable aid in all theirwork. The proverb about the flesh potsof Egypt has remained illustrative to thepresent day, to show how abundantly thatanimal supplies their physical need offood, and the milk of the female was alsoan important article of diet. The posses-sion of much cattle was therefore ardentlydesired by the ancient infant nations, andthe worship of the Bull was inauguratedunder the solar precession through Taurusduring earlier, sidereal years, and was

    19/62

continued to the comparatively moderntimes, when the Sun by precession wentthrough the sign of the Celestial Bull forthe last time.

At that point when the Sun entered thesign of the Lamb, Aries, the Aryan reli-gions were inaugurated. The Religion ofthe Lamb is to hold sway for the nextsidereal year, while the Sun by precessionpasses around the twelve signs of thezodiac, as the religion of the Bull has helddominion during the previous celestialyear from the time the Sun enteredTaurus, until it left the same sign on its

next passage.New religions, however, are not

revealed in their fullness at the beginning;they are started and go through a period ofgestation long before the religion whichthey are to succeed, comes into materialexistence and similarly an ancient religionabout to be abrogated, survives long afterthe religion which succeeds it has become

the official source for upliftment ofhumanity. The Original Semites, chosento inaugurate the worship of the Lamb,Aries, during the Aryan Epoch, weretaken from Egypt, the home of the BullTaurus. Not our modern Egypt howev-er, the story of Pharaoh who endeavoredto prevent their emigration and wasbrowned, has reference to Atlantis which

was submerged thousands of years beforeMoses is supposed to have made hisescape with the Israelites through the redsea. The facts underlying the story arethat a multitude of people left the landwhere the bull Taurus was worshiped,(Atlantis or Egypt) whose inhabitants

were drowned, to seek a promised landbeyond the water which then engulfed anungodly nation. There they were dedi-cated to worship the Lamb Aries. Thislamb had been slain in Egypt; (Atlantis);through its blood these pioneers had beenpreserved from death, and it was thus theLamb, slain from the foundation of the(present) World which we call theAryan

Epoch. Noahs escape presents anotherphase of the same occurrence relating thatthe mists which had enveloped Atlantiscondensed to rain, and flooded the basinsof the earth, leaving a clear atmosphere in

which the Rainbow was seen for the firsttime at the opening of the New Age, theAryan Epoch, where a new Covenant wasmade with the pioneers of the polity thenushered in.

Atlantis was the home of the Bull,Taurus, and when the Sun, by precession, was leaving that sign the last time, theReligion of the Lamb Aries was definitely

ushered in. Thenceforth, the worship ofthe Bull was abrogated and when any ofthe pioneer race, brought out from theancient Atlantean dispensation by theblood of the Lamb, Aries, backslid andworshiped the Taurean Calf they actedcontrary to the law of progress and weretherefore Idolaters, and an abominationto the divine hierarchs whose task it was

to guide them during the ages proceedingthe advent of Christ. On account ofrepeated transgressions many were lost, and they are the Jews of today who stillretain their Atlantean traits (see Cosmo-Conception).

Apart from the Astrological key, the

Bible is truly a closed book, but with thiskey, the matter is different. In the OldTestament reference is made to two class-es of animals: Bulls, which were Taurean, and Sheep and Goats which were Arian. These alone were used as Sacrifices.(Turtle-doves were permitted as a conces-sion to poverty). All the principal charac-ters of the Old dispensation wereShepherds (Arian) and Christ alsoannounces Himself as the GreatShepherd.

In the New Testament we find an-otheranimal, the Fish, attaining great promi-

nence, and the apostles were called to beFishers of Men, for then the sun byPrecession was nearing the cusp of Pisces, the Fish, and Christ spoke of the timewhen the Son of Man (Aquarius) shallcome. Thus our evolutionary journey ismapped out in the hidden astrologicalallusions of the Bible.

The student now has a line on the march

of events, which it is well to keep in mind.Next month we will consider the deeperdetails of each sign.

    YOUR CHILDS HOROSCOPE

Adolph Bm. Born April 20, 1900

We judge first his mental characteristicsfrom the position of Mercury and the

Moon, although, of course, all the otherplanets have their part in determining thisas well as all other matters.

We find that both Mars and Mercury are

in Aries, the sign of the head; Saturn issquare to Mercury. The presence of Marsin Aries always makes people very quick-tempered; they act under impulse and dosome very rash acts which they mayregret afterwards. We find also that thesquare of Saturn to Mercury will causeAdolph to hold a grudge and be very crueland sarcastic in his speech. These tenden-cies should be checked by all means pos-sible. It is bad enough to do rash things onthe impulse of the moment. But whenanyone nurses a fancied or even a realgrievance, it is impossible to repair thedamage done by being quick-temperedand he makes himself and his environ-

    21/62

ments very unhappy.By all means tell Adolph morning,

noon, and night that whatever happens, hemust forget and forgive. The Moon, which is the other significator of mind, isalso square to Venus and Neptune andthese mental configurations give him atendency to suspect everybody and thusattract undesirable conditions to himselfwhich will make him very unhappy in lifeunless they are eradicated or lived above.

Uranus is in conjunction to Jupiter andthis planet is essentially dignified inSagittarius, the sign of Science and

Invention. These two planets, in trine toMercury and Mars, will make Adolphvery inventive; it will give him a geniusand an ability to see things that are farabove the average; but there is not an easystreet before him so he can just walk intofortune and have success open her arms tohim at the very moment he appears.Uranus and Jupiter are in the twelfth

house, the house of limitation, sorrow, trouble and self-undoing. The good thingssignified by any planet in this house aredifficult to bring about. It seems to remainin latency as if there were a wall roundabout it to hold it back. Moreover, Saturn, the planet of obstruction, is intercepted inthe first house. All intercepted signs showthings which are in latency and difficult to

bring out. Therefore it would seem thathis environment, signified by the firsthouse, will have the tendency to hold himdown always. Jupiter and Uranus, trineMars and Mercury, will give him plentyof push; he will always endeavor to dosomething in order that he may succeed,

but at every turn it will seem as if some-thing comes up to cheek his desires andblock his designs.

The Moon square Venus and Neptune,in the sixth house, which rules labor, willmake it very difficult for him to findemployment for anyone else. He willalways meet with treachery on the part ofhis fellow employees, and when he hasconceived an idea and is working it out,he will be liable to have it stolen fromhim; therefore, he should be very carefulnot to give his confidence regarding suchmatters to anyone, no matter how fair they

may seem to his face.In the matter of finance, he will experi-

ence the strangest and most unexpectedreverses because Uranus, the ruler of thesecond house, is retrograde in the twelfthhouse. He will never make any great for-tune and at times he will be brought downto such poverty that he will be absolutelywithout means of any kind or nature. This

may seem very unfortunate from the ordi-nary worldly point of view. But as a mat-ter of fact, when anyone has that abilitywhich is indicated by Uranus conjunctionJupiter trine Mercury and Mars, anyreverse that he may suffer will only betemporary and it will give him new incen-tive to go ahead with something else.Money has no value to the soul, but the

experience has, and in this way he will getmuch more experience than if everythingwent smooth for him financially.

With respect to Health, it is very essen-tial that the parents should be careful withcoughs and colds, for these are indicatedby the square of the Moon to Venus and

RAYS FROM THE ROSE CROSS 23

    22/62

Neptune in sign the Gemini, which rulesthe lungs, and in the sixth house, whichrules health. Nearly everybody is toocareless with a cold, thinking of it assomething that will right itself withouttrouble upon their part. And it does inmost cases; but where there is a weakspot, it behooves us to be particularlycareful not to cultivate conditions thatmay aggravate the matter. The square ofSaturn to Mercury in Aries also gives hima tendency to very severe headaches andcongestion of blood in the head. If he istaught some easily appropriate exercises

which will keep the muscles of the neck inproper shape, this will be greatly amelio-rated; but the temper, spoken of in theopening paragraph, will be greater factorsin bringing on this disability than any-thing else. Therefore, if he is taught tohold himself in check and obtain self-con-trol, he will also lighten, if not entirely doaway with, this tendency.

    Murillo By Los Angeles

    Born June 11, 1911

At the time of Murillos birth, Cancerwas rising with Venus and Mercury on theAscendant; this gives him a dreamy, artis-tic temperament which is apt to make itdifficult for him to get through life. Saturn

was just going down in the West and is,therefore, in opposition to Mercury. Thismakes him timid and gives him a verypoor memory. This aspect also gives hima tendency to disregard the truth; in fact,if this configuration of Saturn to Mercurywere alone and not offset by something

else, he would be very untruthful; but theMoon in conjunction and parallel toUranus and Jupiter makes him intuitionaland gives him more honorable character-istics, so that there is good reason to hopethat he may outgrow the evil tendency, specially if you are quite strict with him inrespect of always telling the truth. Forthen, by the help of the last named con-figuration, he will be able to overcome the

evil effect of Saturn opposition Mercury.Mars is the most elevated planet in the

horoscope; that is to say, it was near thezenith at the time of his birth. This planetin Taurus, the sign of the voice, makeshim very quarrelsome, and the sextile toVenus from the house of friends gives himthe tendency to always rule his friends, particularly his young girl friends, with a

rod of iron; and, strange to say, they willsubmit and seem to like it and will beloyal to him in spite of anything he maysay or do. Thus his best and closestfriends will always be girls, for the boyswill never submit to him in that respect.

The Sun and Neptune are in conjunction

    23/62

in Gemini, the sign of the hands, shoul-ders and arms, showing that the artisticability of Venus on the Ascendant willparticularly express itself along the line ofmusic on stringed instruments. It will notbe necessary for him to study music. Themoment, almost, that he takes up aninstrument he will be able to play upon itand his ability is very superior and inspi-rational, but unfortunately these significa-tors are situated in the twelfth house, thehouse of sorrow, trouble, and self-undoing.The indolence engendered by the opposi-tion of Saturn to Mercury, which latter

planet also is in the twelfth house, willprevent him from pushing to the front andobtaining recognition before the public, ifthe tendency is allowed to run unchecked.

Saturn, the ruler of the seventh house, isalso in the sixth, curtailing his chances ofobtaining employment of the facultywhich he has so well in hand; and the sun, which rules the second house, the depart-

ment of life that deals with finance andthe emolument we receive for our ser-vices, is in the twelfth house, imprisoned,as it were; therefore the indications arethat Murillo will have a very difficult timegetting the proper public recognition ofthe faculty which he undoubtedly pos-sesses; and when he does get a hearing itwill be difficult for him to obtain the

financial remuneration his talents deserve. Moreover, there is the tendency indicatedby Mars sextile to Venus that he will spendhis money too freely on lady friends.

All these things the parents should con-sider and guide their educational efforts insuch manner as to offset them from the

earliest childhood. Encourage him alwaysto seek the society of boys, try to get himto understand, as soon as possible, thevalue of a dollar, that it should not besquandered foolishly; above everything, try to push him to the front. No one canmake a position for himself, or succeed inlife, unless he has the faculty of meetingothers and being pleasant to them; he hasmuch to help him, also, in respect of over-coming these undesirable traits; forJupiter, the planet of joviality, who greetseveryone with a Hail Fellow Well Met,is essentially dignified in his own sign,

Sagittarius; he is in the fifth house, whichgoverns pleasure and public entertain-ments; he is in conjunction with Uranusand the Moon, so that there is much togive aid against the evil configurations.

With respect to health, Saturn inCapricorn shows a tendency toward stiffknees on account of lack of the synovialfluid; the sextile of Mars to Venus in

Cancer, the sign of the stomach, showsthat he will always be fond of the plea-sures of the table and will have the ten-dency to overeat. This should be verystrictly guarded against because Saturn inopposition to Mercury in Cancer showsthat unless his appetite is curbed he willbe subject to one of the most miserablediseases, namely, nervous indigestion.

People who suffer from this malady are aburden to themselves and to everyone elsein their environment. Therefore, it cannotbe told Murillo too often to eat sparinglyand with discrimination. In starting youngto cultivate this habit of frugality he mayescape many years of great suffering.

    THE VITAL BODY

    By Harry Wilson

The Vital Body is composed of the sub-

stance of the Etheric Region. The diagramon page 54 of the Cosmo shows thisregion to be composed of certain etherswhich are as clearly defined as are thefour elements of physical science: Fire,Earth, Air and Water. The four ethers arecalled:

    1. The Chemical Etherthe lowest and

    densest

    2. The Life Ether3. The Light Ether4. The Reflecting Etherthe highest

    and most attenuated

On page 34 of the Cosmo we are toldthat ether is as tangible to the trained seeras are the solids, liquids and gases of theChemical Region to ordinary beings. Hesees the vital forces which give life to themineral forms of plant, animal and manflow into these forms by means of the fourstates of ether.

These ethers are both positive and neg-ative in their manifestation, and their spe-cific functions are as follows:

    (1) Chemical EtherThe forces whichcause assimilation and excretion workthrough it. The forces working along thepositive pole attract the needed elements,

building them into forms; the forcesworking along the negative pole expelfrom the body the materials in the foodwhich are unfit for use.

    (2) Life EtherThis is the avenue ofthe forces that have for their object themaintenance of the speciesthe forces ofpropagation.

    (3) Light EtherThis ether is the medi-

um of sense perception. Along the posi-tive pole operate the forces which gener-ate blood heat in the higher species of ani-mal and man, making them individualsources of heat. Along the negative poleare the forces which operate through thesenses, manifesting as the passive func-tions of sight, hearing, feeling, tasting andsmelling. They also build and nourish the

eye. Color in all kingdoms of life is due tothe forces working along the negativepole of the light ether.

    (4) Reflecting EtherThis ether is theso-called Memory of Nature, and in itmay be found a picture of everything thathas ever happened. The term reflecting

is used because of the fact that these pic-tures or records are but reflections froma much higher realm, where the perma-nent records are found. This ReflectingEther is also the medium through whichthought makes an impression upon thehuman brain.

As the vital body is composed of theseethers, its functions are the same, and sowe are told, upon page 57 of the Cosmo, that we must have a vital body before wecan express life, grow or externalize thequalities peculiar to the Etheric Region.

The student desiring a history of the

vital body, as it appears in theRosicrucianCosmo-Conception, must first turn to thealphabetical list of words, indexed onpage 540, and in the list of those begin-ning with the letter V he will find thatVital Body refers him to page 570,where a topical index will be found.Under the general heading of MansInvisible Vehicles we find that the first

considered is the lowest and densest, viz.;The Vital Body.

We are here referred to page 210, wherewe learn that in the Sun Period the for-mation of the vital body was commenced. On page 211 we learn, that in the first orSaturn Revolution of the Sun Period thegerminal dense body was reconstructed.(Keep in mind that each Period is com-

posed of seven revolutions.) In the secondrevolution of the Sun Period the Lords ofWisdom radiated from their own bodiesthe germ of the vital body, making it capa-ble of interpenetrating the dense body andgiving to the germ the capability of fur-thering growth and propagation, and of

entering the sense centers of the densebody. In short, they gave, germinally, tothe vital body all the faculties which it isnow unfolding, to become a perfect andpliable instrument for the use of the spir-it.

The index on page 570 then refers us topage 215, where we learn that in the sec-ond or Sun revolution of the Moon period, the vital body was modified to render itcapable of being interpenetrated by aDesire body; also of accommodatingitself to the nervous system, muscles, skeleton, etc. The Lords of Wisdom, who

were the originators of the vital body, helped the Lords of Individuality in thiswork, the latter having charge of materialevolution in the Moon Period.

We then find on page 240 that duringthe second or Sun revolution of the EarthPeriod the vital body was reconstructed toaccommodate the germinal mind. TheLords of Form, who have charge of mate-

rial evolution in the Earth Period, wereassisted in this work of reconstruction bythe Angels, who were the humanity of theMoon Period.

From the foregoing it is evident that inevery instance the building of the vitalbody has been anticipated by that of thedense body, and so are we taught that inthe building of vehicles through which

spirit may manifest, it is necessary that adense, physical body be first constructed, and if that spirit would manifest as Lifethrough that dense body, an etheric orvital body must be built. This vital bodymust conform in every respect to thedense body, as we are told on page 60 of

the Cosmo, where it is said that, with oneexception, it is the same, molecule formolecule, as the dense body. The excep-tion is this, that the vital body of a man isfemale or negative, while the vital bodyof woman is male, or positive, theirdense bodies being of opposite polarity.

On page 59 we learn that the vital bodyof plant, animal and man extends beyondthe periphery of the dense body as theEtheric Region, which is the vital body ofthe planet, extends beyond its dense part. This is true whether it be the lily of thefield or the stars in their courses, and

shows the truth of the Hermetic axiom:As above, so below.

The distance of this extension of thevital body of man is about an inch and ahalf. The part which is outside the densebody is very luminous and about the colorof a new-blown peach blossom. It is oftenseen by persons having a very slightinvoluntary spirit sight.

On page 135 we learn that theRecording Angels, the Lords of Destiny, direct the construction of the vital body atthe present time so that man may reapwhat he sows. They impress the reflectingether of the vital body in such a way thatthe pictures of the coming life are reflect-ed in it. Although assisted in the construc-tion of this vital body, the Ego seeking

rebirth incorporates therein the quintes-sence of its former vital bodies, and inaddition to this also does a little originalwork. This is done that in the coming lifethere may be some room for original andindividual expression, not predeterminedby the past action.

In the building of bodies, except in thecase of a very highly developed being, thework of the Ego is almost negligible at thepresent stage of mans evolution. Thegreatest scope is given in the building ofthe desire body; very little in that of thevital body and almost none in the densebodyyet even this little is sufficient tomake each individual an expression of hisown spirit and different from the parents(p. 138).

The dense body is built into the matrixof this vital body during ante-natal life. Asthe lines of force in freezing water are the

avenues of formation for ice crystals, sothe lines of force in the vital body deter-mine the shape of the dense body (p. 60).

The vital body, having been molded bythe Lords of Destiny, will give form to thedense body, organ for organ. This matrix,or mold, is then placed in the womb of thefuture mother (p. 137). In that periodimmediately following birth the different

vehicles interpenetrate each other, butthough they are all present as in adult life, they are merely present. None of theirpositive faculties are active. The vitalbody cannot use the forces which operatealong the positive pole of the ethers.Assimilation, which works along the pos-itive pole of the chemical ether, is verydainty during childhood, and what there is

of it is due to the macrocosmic vital body, the ethers of which act as a womb for thechilds vital body until the seventh year, gradually ripening it during that period. The propagative faculty, which worksalong the positive pole of the life ether, islatent. The heating, of the body, which is

carried along the positive pole of the lightether, and the circulation of the blood, aredue to the macrocosmic vital body, theseethers acting on the child and slowlydeveloping it to the point where it cancontrol these functions itself (p. 140).

The forces working along the negativepole of the ethers are much more active inthe child. The excretion of solids, carriedalong the negative pole of the chemicalethercorresponding to the solid sub-stance of the Chemical Regionis toounrestrained, as is also the excretion offluid, which is carried along the negative

pole of the life ethercorresponding tothe second or fluid division of the ChemicalRegion. The passive sense perception, which is due to the negative forces of thelight ether, is also exceedingly prominent, making the child very impressionable, and all eyes and ears (p. 140).

It is not until the seventh year that thevital body comes from under the protect-

ing influence of the macrocosmic vitalbody, which has guarded it from the dan-gers which threaten when the unwise indi-vidual vital body takes unchecked charge. Then the period of excessive and danger-ous growth begins and continues for thenext seven years. Were the vital body tohave continual and unrestrained sway inthe human kingdom, as it has in the plant,

man would grow to an enormous size. There was a time in the far distant pastwhen man was constituted like a plant, having only a dense and a vital body. Thetraditions of mythology and folklore allover the world concerning giants in theolden times are absolutely true, because

    then men grew as tall as trees, and for thesame reason (p. 142). The vital body ofthe plant builds leaf after leaf, carryingthe stem higher and higher. Were it not forthe macrocosmic desire body, the plantwould keep on in that way indefinitely,but the macrocosmic desire body steps inat a certain point and cheeks furthergrowth. The force not needed for furthergrowth is then available to build theflower and seed. In like manner thehuman vital body, when the dense bodycomes under its sway after the seventhyear, makes the latter grow very rapidly;

but about the fourteenth year the individ-ual desire body is born from the womb ofthe macrocosmic desire body. This checksthe excessive growth, and the force, there-fore, used for that purpose becomes avail-able for propagation, that the human plantmay flower and bring forth.

The vital force of the Sun, which sur-rounds us as a colorless fluid, is absorbed

by the vital body through the ethericcounterpart of the spleen, wherein itundergoes a curious transformation ofcolor. It becomes pale rose-hued andspreads along the nerves all over thedense body. It is to the nervous systemwhat the force of electricity is to a tele-graph system. Whenever there is an inter-ruption to this flow of vital force we have

paralysis. The vital body has become dis-eased and the vital force can no longerflow. During health the vital body special-izes a superabundance of vital force, which, after passing through a densebody, radiates in straight lines in everydirection from the periphery thereof, as

RAYS FROM THE ROSE CROSS 29

the radii of a circle do from the center. Butduring ill health, when the vital bodybecomes attenuated, it is not able to drawto itself the same amount of force, and inaddition, the dense body is feeding uponit. Then the lines of the vital fluid whichpass out from the body are crumpled andbent, showing the lack of force behindthem. In health the force of these radia-tions carries with it germs and microbeswhich are inimical to health; but in sick-ness, when the vital force is weak, theseemanations do not so readily eliminatedisease germs. Therefore the danger of

contracting disease is much greater whenthe vital forces are low, than when one isin robust health (pp. 63-64).

The activities of the desire body andmind during waking hours are constantlybreaking down tissue. The vital bodyfaithfully endeavors to restore harmonyand build up, but is not able to withstandthe onslaughts of the higher bodies and

gradually loses ground, and at last col-lapses. The vital fluid ceases to flowalong the nerves in sufficient quantity; thebody becomes drowsy; and the Thinker isthus hampered and forced to withdraw, taking the desire body with him. Thewithdrawal of the higher vehicles leavesthe dense body interpenetrated by thevital in a senseless state we call sleep.

On page 91 of the Cosmo we learn thatthe involuntary memory or subconsciousmind comes into being in the followingmanner: As the ether carries to the sensi-tive film of the camera an accurateimpression of the surrounding landscape, taking in the minutest detail, so the ether

contained in the air we inspire carries withit an accurate, detailed picture of all oursurroundings. Not only of material things, but also the conditions existing eachmoment within our aura. The slightestthought, feeling or emotion is transmittedto the lungs, where it is injected into theblood. The blood is one of the highestproducts of the vital body, as it is the car-rier of nourishment to every part of thebody, and the direct vehicle of the Ego.The pictures it contains are impressedupon the negative atoms of the vital bodyto serve as arbiters of mans destiny in the

    post-mortem state.(To be continued.)

    THE EFFECTS OF MEAT EATING

    By Herman O. Haugland

The following statements are a summa-ry of Gourand on the reaction of meat onthe human system. He says: The reactionof a meat diet on the process of nutritionin general can be described in threewords. It excites, it acidifies, and it intox-icates.

The excitation of meat comes chieflyfrom the extractives. Being protein, themeat is digested in the stomach, whichaccounts for the fact that heavy meateaters at first experience a sense of com-fort, but soon begin to feel uneasy andsluggish, with a craving for more; i.e.,

renewed stimulation.Meat has no stayingpower and leads to gluttony.

Meat acidifies because the phosphoricacid contained in it outweighs the basicsubstance and also because its combus-tion is never complete, thus giving rise toacids, the most important of which is uricacid. In the carnivorous animals theseacids are neutralized by an equal produc-

tion of ammonia. But in man the forma-tion of ammonia is very limited, and withan increased consumption of flesh foodthe ratio of urinary acidity rises in propor-tion.

Meat intoxicates by reason of its basic

purines and by ptomaines, which easilybecome most noxious poisons to theheart, the blood vessels, and the wholeorganism, though they are of indifferentvalue when present in a small volume. Moreover, the bacterial ferments due tomeat are of a toxic nature. Metchnikoffpoints out that to them chiefly is duesenility. Meat also encourages the forma-tion of micro-organisms in the alimentarycanal and further putrefaction.

Combe was the first to show the amountof sulpho-ether in the urine, and the evi-dence of this putrefaction is increased ordiminished in proportion to the amount ofmeat consumed.

The excessive use of meat, it is claimed,

greatly affects the intestinal flora byintensifying its virulence, changing itscomposition and breeding enterocolitisand appendicitis. It is now generally rec-ognized that nitrogen forms a splendidbreeding ground for intestinal bacteria, and that constipation helps to developthem.

We have already stated, in our previous

article on Vegetarianism vs. Meat Diet, that meat leaves no residue. That is thereason why flesh diet often is the cause ofconstipation and stasis, particularly in theintestines.

    HOW WE HEAL THE SICK

Inquiries about our method of healingare frequent, and much misunderstandingexists. We endeavored to elucidate thematter in an article in the Echoes ofSeptember 1914, which has done so muchgood, and has been circulated so widelythat we feel Justified in reprinting it (in

part) to comply with many requests. We also print, for the first time, A Story

from the Invisible World, told by one ofour Doctor Probationers of how he, in thesoul body as an Invisible Helper, saved apatient from an operation by our healingmethod.

Our method of healing is not altogethera spiritual matter. We use physical meanswherever it is possible. There are timeseven when we send our patients to a doc-tor in order that they may get quick relieffrom him by a certain treatment which wecannot give as promptly by other meth-ods. Also the diet of patients receivescareful attention, for naturally, as the bodyis built up of physical substances, we are

giving medicines by using the right food. But in addition, healing is carried on bythe Elder Brothers through a band ofInvisible Helpers which they are instruct-ing.

Who, then, are the Invisible Helpers?

would be the next question; and to this wemay answer that they are Probationerswho during the day time live a worthy lifeof helpfulness and thereby fit themselves,or earn for themselves, the privilege ofbeing helpful through the instrumentalityof the Elder Brothers at night. TheseProbationers are gathered together in

bands according to their temperamentsand their ability. They are under instruc-tion of other Probationers who are doc-tors, and all of them work under the guid-ance of the Elder Brothers, who naturallyare the moving spirits in the whole work.

Certain concessions on the part of thepatient are needed before this band ofInvisible Helpers can work with him orher. In the first place, they must have partof the effluvia from his vital body. That isobtained by having thepatient write everyweek a letter consisting of a few words ora few lines with pen and ink: this isimportant as a pen charged with fluid is agreater conductor of magnetism and elec-tricity than a dry pencil. The ether whichthus impregnates the paper upon whichthe patient writes week by week gives an

indication of the condition at that speci-fied time, and furnishes an entrance key tothe patients system. It is somethingwhich he has given voluntarily and for

the express purpose of furnishing accessfor the Invisible Helpers. Unless the

patient does his part in that respect, theInvisible Helpers are unable to do any-thing with him or her; so it may be seenthat it is of the utmost importance to keepup the weekly letters to Headquarters.

The Invisible Helpers are also requiredto do something similar and for the samereason. At the time when they takeProbationership, they vow in that mysticmarriage of the higher and lower selvesthat they will dedicate their lives, in so faras consistent with their duties in theworld, to help humanity, and by that vowthey come under the protection of the

Elder Brothers, who stand in the sameposition toward this bridal couple, thehigher and the lower selves, in their work,as the State stands to the man and womanwho enters a union before one of its rep-resentatives. Both the State and the ElderBrothers agree to preserve the integrity ofthe union so long as the conditions there-of are kept. One of the obligations which

the Probationers take upon themselves isto send in each month to Headquarters areport of the exercises which they haveperformed, and this report, if written with

pen and ink, absorbs the effluvia fromtheir hands daily when they come in contactwith the paper. This furnishes to the ElderBrothers the key whereby they are enabledto direct the Probationers during sleep.

We are just the same after we go to sleepas we are during our waking hours. If,during the day time, we shirk our duties,if we try to get everything for ourselves, ifwe yield to the lower nature on everyoccasion, etc., we are not transformed intoInvisible Helpers and Angels of Mercy bymerely going to sleep. But if during the

day time we strive earnestly and with thewhole heart and soul to grasp everyopportunity that comes our way or, rather,if we look for opportunities to help and to

serve others; if, instead of asking: Whatcan I get out of it? we try to see in everyphase of life an opportunity for helpful-ness; if, instead of saying: Why should Ido this, that or the other thing? we learnto say: If a thing has to be done, whyshould I not do it?; if we learn to regardall things as honorable in the line of laborand work and never look down upon any-thing as menial but are just as ready to go

and do the lowest as well as the highestclass of work wherever we see it is neces-sary, then also at night shall we earn theopportunity to come in touch with andwork under the guidance of the ElderBrothers in this glorious work of healing.

    AN INVISIBLE HELPERS STORY

It is not usually permitted, nor is italways expedient, that the InvisibleHelpers should tell of their exploits, as itgives an undesirable odor of phenome-non-mongering; but there are times whenmodesty must be set aside to a certainextent for the good of the cause and thefollowing story by Dr. Stuart Leech,

M.D., one of our Probationers, illustrates

the method used and results gained in onecase. We could cite hundreds of similarcases where other organs have beenrestored to health; even spines have beenstraightened and paralyzed limbs maderesponsive to the will.

In the case reported by Dr. Leech, hedoes not mention whether the patient felt

the manipulations. This is quite frequent-ly the case, for the unseen hands are pow-erful when materialized inside thepatients body. It also frequently happensthat the patient sees the Invisible Helpersat the moment of waking.

The report was originally written forpublication in a Medical Magazine. Dr.Leech does give his orthodox medical

confreres some, to them, hard nutsfrom time to time: but what if they scofftoday? Yesterday they sneered at ideaswhich are strictly scientific today; andtomorrow they will learn that, to para-

phrase Shakespeare,There are more things twixt heaven and

earth than dreamt of in their pathology.

Clinical Report of a CaseIt was during the early days of January

1914 that I had been attending a case ofabdominal trouble in a fourteen year old, much emaciated boy. He was dark haired,

had brown eyes, large bones and slenderphysique with a good amount of intelli-gence. Four years prior to this presentattack he had suffered from a severeattack of appendicitis, from which he hadapparently recovered. Of late he had beenmore or less indiscreet in the choice andthe amount of his food and on the daybefore the present attack he had in lifting

hay suffered some violence by a slip ofthe foot.

After a day or two of suffering I wassent for and found all the classical symp-toms of a pus forming appendix present.Food was discontinued for eight or tendays, the proverbial ice-bag was used

judicially and an occasional enema was

employed. Temperature ran along from 99to 102.5 degrees and about the seventh oreighth day of his sickness the symptomsbecame so alarming that I induced thefamily to permit me to have Dr. North asa consultant next morning.

Dr. Unus of the same town had attendedthe case four years previously and had atthat time insisted on an operation.Personally I had performed quite a fewabdominal operations, but it was general-ly done as a last resort, and now it lookedas though there would be another casewhere I would have to resort to the same

procedure. This modus operandi, espe-cially in the midst of an attack, was not tomy liking. Being in the neophyte class ofthe Western Wisdom School, I endeav-ored to use unusual means in conjunctionwith the physical means to bring about therecovery of this case, as I do in others. The unusual is the application of naturallaws of one or more of the higher worlds.

As a word of explanation, I will say t
