    anticipation to the birth of a new Sun tocarry us through the coming year of1916. Notwithstanding the Great War,the spirit of Christmas is in the air, the

    spirit of expectancy, the feeling thatsome thing new is coming into our lives,and that the future will be brighter thanthe past is with all. Though all thecalamities and suffering contained inPandoras Box seem to be abroad at thepresent time, Hope, the priceless gift ofthe Gods, smiles encouragingly as shepoints to the silver lining on the great

    war cloud, and tells us that behind it theSun of peace and joy is more luminousthan ever, that presently it will illuminethe earth with a radiance not previouslyappreciated by us.

    But there are some who are physicallyblind and though the Sun shines never sobrightly, they perceive it not. There arealso those who are spiritually blind and

    consequently incapable of seeing thegreat spiritual wave which descendsannually upon the earth. We must havewithin ourselves the organ of perceptionof that also, for, as Angelus Silesius says:

    Though Christ a thousand times in

    Bethlehem be born,

    And not within thyself, thy soul will

    be forlorn.The cross of Golgotha, thou lookest

    to in vain,

    Unless within thyself it be set up

    again.

    The illumined mystic sees this great

    Cosmic Drama of the Spirits descentinto matter enacted before his spiritualvision year after year. Nor is this visionvague and indefinite, depending upon

    certain feelings, but it is a clear andaccurate presentation to the smallestdetails. It is not necessary for spirit inthe invisible world to take a certain def-inite form just as we do in the physicalworld; any form that has a certain sharpoutline implies limitation.

    A spirit may allow its form to blendwith the forms of other spirits, it may

    permeate even the physical bodies ofothers and still retain its own individual-ity, because it vibrates to a certain toneor keynote which is different from thatof all others. Thus, in September, theillumined Seer perceives the CosmicChrist Spirit as a mighty Lightwave ofsupernal splendor, descending upon theearth which it permeates.

    By the twenty-first of December thiscelestial light has reached the center ofour terrestrial sphere. Then the days arethe shortest, the nights are the longestand darkest, but the light shineth inthe darkness, and the darkness com-

    prehendeth it not.

    The vibratory motive impulses givento the earth during the early months of

    each year, have nearly spent themselves;by Christmas the earth is crystallized,dead and cold, wrapped in its blanket ofsnow, and were not this new life of theChrist Spirit poured into the earth togive it fresh energy for another year, alllife upon our planet must perish.

    There has been much speculation uponthe nature of the star that shone inBethlehem at midnight. The Orthodoxopinion, which holds that the immacu-

    late conception and birth of Jesus areunique in the history of the human race,supposes that the Christ Star was seen inthe firmament on that occasion only; butthe wise men, who, by the alchemy ofsoul growth, are striving to build withinthemselves that stone of the cornerwhich was rejected by the builders but isprized by all philosophers, know that the

    Christ Light is not to be found outside.They know that the Hermetic axiomexpressing the law of analogy as aboveso below, applies also in this case, andthat the Christ formed within them mustlook for the Christ Star within the earth,for, again quoting Angelus Silesius, itwould be as impossible for a Christ

    outside the earth to save the world, as

    it is for a Christ on Golgotha to saveus. Until the Christ is born within us,and until the Christ is born within theearth, He cannot accomplish His mis-sion.

    Therefore, on the longest and darkestnight of each year, the Mystic kneels insilent adoration, looking inwardly by thespiritual sight. Cultivated by him,

    towards the center of the earth, wherethe most Supernal Light that ever shoneon land or sea, illuminates the wholeglobe with brightness and brilliance thatis overwhelming.

    And then the wise man brings his giftsand offers them at the feet of the new-

    born Savior. He may be poor in theworlds goods, he may not even have aplace where to lay his head, neverthe-less, his gifts are more precious than a

    Kings ransom. During his life ofAspiration he has cultivated preciouspossessions and the first which he offersup on the alter of sacrifice is Love.Love vaunteth not itself, is not puffedup, does not behave itself unseemly,seeketh not her own, rejoices not in theiniquity but in the truth, and whetherthere be prophecies they shall fail and

    whether there be knowledge it shall van-ish away, for now abideth Faith, Hope,and Love, but the greatest of these isLove. God so loved the world that hegave his alone begotten Son, that whoso-ever believeth upon Him should not per-ish but should have age lasting Life.And this great gift was not given onceand for all, but each year the Son of God

    is reborn again into the earth to enliventhis planet by His superior Vibrationsthat we may have Life and have it moreabundantly.

    As the human spirit dies upon the spir-itual plane when it is born into the phys-ical world, so also the Christ Spirit diesto the Solar Sphere when, for our sakes,it is born into the earth at Christmas

    time. It is cramped by the crystallizingenvironment which we have made.Truly, greater Love hath no man thanthat he lay down his Life for hisfriends, the Christ said, Ye are myfriends if ye do whatsoever I command,and this is my commandment, that ye

    ment: The Sixteen Races and that thewar has saved humanity from an infinite-ly worse fate than the wholesale slaughternow going on. The facts are as follows:

    During the development of humanityin our present earth period, the earth hadchanged to afford man the environmentappropriate to his changing constitutionand evolutionary requirements. Thegreat divisions of time occupied in thesechanges are called epochs.

    The Polarian Hyperborean, Lemurian,and Atlantean Epochs have passed, and

    we are now in the Aryan Epoch. Whenthis is past, another Epoch called theNew Galilee will be ushered in. Duringthe two first Epochs man was as inno-cent of individuality as children in afamily, but at the end of the LemurianEpoch, some were different from themajority, and might be called a Race.There were seven races in the Atlantean

    Epoch, five have been born and twomore are due to make their appearancein the Aryan Epoch, and one will be bornin the beginning of the New Galilee.With the last of Sixteen Races, mankindwill be again united in Love andBrotherhood.

    But while the leaders of evolution hadplenty of time to guide humanity

    through the early Epochs, where longspans of time were consumed in evolu-tion of a certain faculty, the races arecomparatively evanescent, and there is agreat danger that some may become soenmeshed in the race ideal that they failto proceed to the next higher stage;

    therefore the Sixteen Races are calledthe Sixteen Paths to Destruction.

    The most far-reaching changes in thegeological formation of the earth and the

    physiological constitution of man tookplace in the latter third of Atlantis, whenthe Aryan Epoch was about to be ush-ered in, for these Epochs always overlapone another, so that one begins beforethe preceding one is entirely past. Thechanges were as follows:

    1. The dense mist that hung darklyover Atlantis, condensed, and rain filled

    the basins of the earth, leaving theatmosphere clear. Then the rainbow, aphenomenon impossible in a foggyatmosphere, became visible for the firsttime.

    2. Respiration, which had been per-formed by gill-like organs during theAtlantean Epoch, changed then to thepresent method of directly inhaling the

    air and absorbing part into the blood,namely the fiery oxygen.3. Then man also began to see his fel-

    low-men in clear sharp contours, eachdifferent from himself.

    These geological and physiologicalchanges have had, as said, far-reachingconsequences, and are directly responsi-ble for individual oppression and war, as

    we shall see.During the earlier Epochs when thespirit was molding the vehicle it wasdestined to inhabit, man-in-the-makinghad almost no physical consciousness,and even in the early and middle third ofAtlantis when the spirit had entered its

    dwelling the consciousness was focusedprincipally in the spiritual world, thedark fog made it impossible for theAtlanteans to clearly perceive each

    others body, but they saw the soul; theyalso walked with God, the DivineHierarch, who guided them as a father,for he was visible to them as a spiritualentity; therefore all was peace.

    Then came the flood and cleared theatmosphere with the following results:

    Those who had evolved physical sightsaw their fellow men clearly. They

    learned to differentiate between Me andThee, Mine and Thine, laying the basisfor selfishness and strife. Hencehumanity as a whole could no longer

    be guided by one leader, but was sub-divided among a number of race spiritswho, as powers of the air, took controlof the larynx and lungs of the people.With every breath they breathed this

    race spirit, till it permeated their wholebeing.Their vocal chords vibrated in its

    peculiar key, making the speech of onegroup different from that of other races.It enveloped all its people as a cloud,coloring both them and the landscapeswith its own specific color vibrations,and this was sensed by all its charges as

    a sacred bond which binds them to eachother and to the land which they inhabit.So strong is the grip upon lung, larynxand land held by the race spirit, that itspeople will fight to the last breath for themother tongue and the father land.

    This fellow feeling instilled by the

    race spirit in its charges is called patrio-tism. It was the aim of the race spirit, byfostering the love of family, to educatemankind to loving its nation, or compa-

    triots. Through patriotism they hopedto engender altruism, which transcendsall imaginary boundary lines on the mapin an endeavor to embrace all in univer-sal love.

    But instead of accomplishing thisnoble purpose, patriotism, the love ofkin and country, has fostered in many ahate of all other nations and a desire to

    persecute others and subject them for itsown aggrandizement. And insofar asany race, nation, or people have donethat, it has proven subversive of the uni-versal good, for it should be remem-bered that races are an aspect of the per-sonality only, the bodies alone arestamped with the racial characteristics,but the spirits are under no such illuso-

    ry restrictions when disembodied.Thus there is great danger that throughexcessive patriotism the spirits maybecome so enmeshed in the fetters offamily and country, that they will notleave the race when the evolutionaryimpulse moves on. They may endeavorto perpetuate the race indefinitely, seek-ing to embody themselves repeatedly

    therein, as the Jews have done, and thusgo to ruin in one of those sixteen pathsof destruction, as the Elder Brothers callthe sixteen races. Therefore Christ said,I come not to bring peace but a sword.Therefore the Christian nations havebeen the most militant upon earth, per-

    haps with the exception of theMohammedans, which are akin to them,and there is ample testimony in almostevery war to show that a number of peo-

    ple have had their spiritual visionopened, at least temporarily, so that warhas always been a means of removingthe spiritual cataract which blinds us tothe unity of all Life.

    In the three earlier Epochs, man didnot know he had a body, though he usedit as we use our lungs, regardless of thefact that we have never seen them. He

    was unconscious of birth and death also,though he went through both repeatedly,for his consciousness was focused inthe spiritual world and remained

    unbroken by the vicissitudes of the

    body.But at the dawn of the Aryan Epoch,

    when the atmosphere cleared, he per-ceived himself physically, he also

    learned that the consciousness that ani-mates a body leaves it cold and deadafter a longer or shorter period. The veilof flesh hid the spiritual world, wherethe so-called dead dwell, from sight, as aspiritual cataract which grew moredense as time went by, until nowadaysthose who do not positively deny theexistence of the inner world have

    resigned themselves to the idea thatnothing may be known of the state of theso-called dead.

    Because of that false idea, that blind-ness, intense grief at the loss of lovedones who have passed from our physicalsight has clouded the eyes of all the

    world. Tears have flown in streams fromthe eyes of the mourners, but not in vain,for each tear softens the spiritualcataract, each pang of pain at the loss

    of a loved one is a cut by the knife ofthe great surgeon, who is endeavoringto restore our spiritual vision, that wemay continue our companionship withthe friends who have dropped the mortalcoil. And as surely as the desire forgrowth developed and perfected the ali-mentary canal, and the pre-existent lightbuilt the eye for its perception, so sure-

    ly will also the intense longing for ourloved ones who have passed over the

    threshold of death, break down the

    scale and open our spiritual vision.

    Those who live the so-called higherlife and are fortified in times of troubleby a more advanced understanding ofthe phenomenon of death, often feel thatthe intense grief of the bereaved ones

    who are ignorant of these facts, is unbe-coming and detrimental to the passingspirit.

    And so it is, when expressed in thedeath chamber during the first few daysafter the change, but at the same time,this intense grief and the strain incidentto the approach of death is the meanswhereby the multitude who travel the

    path of evolution will eventually bridgethe gap and regain spiritual conscious-ness. Thus it takes the place of the exer-cises given in the mystery schools.

    Creation of the bodily prison-houseimmured the spirit and shut out the spir-itual world from its ken.

    Destruction of the Disciples body asa living sacrifice restores his conscioustouch with the invisible world, awaken-ing his spiritual vision, by a process of

    white magic.Destruction of anothers body by sac-rifice in war has the same effect. Thefumes of the blood, the screaming shells,the cries of the wounded and dying,whether audible or inaudible, but sur-charged with the most intense pain andgrief, are felt by all as a psychic powerhaving the tendency to draw every one

    of the participants to the very brink ofthe Great Divide, and what wonder thattheir eyes ware opened temporarily andthey see the denizens of the super-phys-ical realms who are always among us,but particularly whenever and whereversomeone is passing the borderline fromour sphere to theirs.

    Moreover, those who have passed out

    are not passive either; their longings tobe seen of their loved ones is a greatfactor in establishing communication.Many cases are recorded bearing out thisfact. A mother, for instance, materializedand called her little tots away from awell that was being dug, though not pos-sessed of the secrets of initiation. Herintense desire wrought for her a tempo-

    rary physical garment.How much more, when months oryears of slaughter have raised the ner-vous tension of millions of people, alllonging for intercourse with some lovedone in this or in the other world, shallthis great desire result in awakening per-

    manently the spiritual sight of a numberof people too great to be ignored?

    In every death chamber we are close tothe portal of the invisible world, and

    great numbers of those who are passingout see their loved ones waiting aroundthe bed to welcome them, rejoicingwhen death has released them from thebody, and they are born on high. Thenervous tension felt by the ordinary manand woman is then extraordinarily high,and conducive to bring about the slightextension of the vision required to per-

    ceive the waiting throng, and were it notfor the unreasoning horror which causesthem to flee when manifestations dooccur, and to hide the fact that they haveseen something, many would then andthere know that there is no death, butthat the continuity of life is a fact innature.

    This process is slow, however, and

    periodically people sink into a state ofunbelief and indifference, and wars arethen permitted in order to accelerateevolution, by the wholesale slaughterthat severs spirit from body. People arethen turned from the pursuit of pleasureto face the facts of Life and Death.

    Therefore, the war will do more than athousand years of preaching, to end the

    age of agnosticism and turn the peopleto God. Moreover, when this touch withthe spiritual world has been restored,there can be no more wars, for all willlearn that there is in reality neither Jewor Gentile, Greek nor Roman, that allraces are illusive and evanescent mani-

    festations and we are all the children ofGod. Thus through carnage the dangerof destruction in the races, will havepassed and mankind will set about in

    earnest to express the ideal of the nextrace which is Universal Brotherhood.Thus it is the purpose of war to

    awaken the spiritual vision through

    grief and intense longing for those

    who have passed over. It is also thepurpose to cause those who have gone toendeavor to return and to engender spir-itual vision in all combatants, by the

    strain and stress of battle, thus re-estab-lishing communication by the twoworlds, robbing death of its terror, andfostering elevating ideals, instead of thesordid concerns of concrete existence.

    Sometimes, in moments of high, altru-istic effort, when all the thought-ener-gies are directed to helpful purpose, thebasilisks eye is felt and hidden fangsdart through the silence. All the airseems suddenly quivering with malig-nant forces. The moment tests the

    fibrealso strength of the soul.Our altruism may have held a note ofweakness. Our love for humanity maynot have rung clear and truefor evenlove must have power and wisdom.There may have been an element ofweakness in our very patience, our ten-

    derness, our long-suffering forbearance.If so, the attack will discover it or ourkeen vision and in silence we shall gainan added power.

    All malicious, subtle attacks, all jeal-ous hatred, all unfounded animositywill, in the very nature of eternal law,reach the innocent sufferer as blessings.They bestow added experience, insight,power.

    Nothing can harm us that finds noanswering note of malice or evil within.But it does recoil upon the heart that sent

    it forth, and destroys its life and peace.To the soul that walks in light and loveall experiences come as blessings. Theshaft sent forth to harm or hinder mayfor a brief period seem effective. It maylower some ones estimate of us; it maycost us the loss of a friend; it may mar asacred relationship and destroy an idealbond. But that is only temporary and in

    our sorrow we gain a great victoryforwe learn to see and know.With the wider outlook on the higher

    plane we gain all things. We growstrong to endure, strong in self-mastery,in self-renunciation. After a while ourvindication will come; all things will berestored to us. But we shall no longerneed them. The personal self that suf-

    fered so will have expanded to meet theuniversal self and we shall have learnedthe meaning of life and love. Only whenwe have learned to live on with the lossof all things are we worthy to hold allthings. Then, in harmony with the work-ing of the good law, we attract all things

    to us. Love flows to us from everysidebecause we love.

    So all our experiences are goodeventhe cruel and bitterif only we keep our

    faces toward the light and let no evilthought enter the heart. Feeling aggriev-ed at an injury is an evil for it springsfrom a little root of self-love. Let us fixthis thought clearly in mind that nothingcan hurt us that we have not deserved. Itmay have been in some other day of life,but the debt must be cancelled. If wehave deserved it, we can profit by the

    lessons it teaches. So we can form noblecharacter by our very mistakes.Strength, power, mastery over all

    forces is what we must acquire beforewe are really conquerorsbefore ourlives are fully rounded out. That is whatour experiences will win for usif wehave only love and good-will in ourhearts.

    The evil-minded and revengeful neverwin any conquest. They are alwaysweak, always futile, always chaotic.The character is built chiefly by itsthoughts and motives. The attack bornof hatred, malice, or jealous spite mustbe met not only with silent patience butwith the inner mind wide open to itsforce and possibilities. Ask the soul

    within: What can I learn by this trial?What weakness is there yet to be con-quered? What part of the personal selfyet to be flayed again?

    Turning thus to the inner light in quiethumility, with earnest purpose to learnand grow and attain, that light will flood

    the consciousness and the vision willgrow clear.

    In the hour of victory the thrust of theenemy will no longer be felt. All the

    impulses of the lower sense-plane willshrivel up into the nothingness of theunreality they are. Only the soul andGodall as one in Godwill fill thevision and life will grow infinitely richand full.

    Is not this victory? Could any retalia-tion bring such reward? Could any moreharboring of the sense of personal injury

    win such results in growth and progress?Conquest of the self must be the aim ofeach soul that would live. However, andby whatever means this is accom-plishedeven through unparalleledwrong and injuryit is to be won at anyand all cost. Our experiences taken thuswill be transmuted into power and wis-dom and our influence will be an ever

    widening circle reaching into the infinitelight.

    receive the reward.Doubtless Paul saw the impatience ofthe Little Ones, like the students oftoday, eager to reap where they had notsown and querulous over their slowprogress. First the natural, then theSpiritual, the growth of the former and

    analogy of the higher. Twenty-fiveyears of earth life it takes Nature tomake a Man from the infant first born;that is, a mature and sound physical

    man. Is it likely that the eternal andimmortal being can grow an establishedChristian character and deep spiritualroot in a few years?

    The Spiritual can only develop whenthe natural gives way, as in a garden thechoice plant will thrive just in propor-tion as weeds are rooted out and thor-ough cultivation given.

    Our Savior Christ did not promise tomake a man over. He promised Powerto become the Sons of God to such asbelieve on His name. The power tobecome a perfect tree or flower is in aseed, the small beginning of the Spiritualgrowth, is in the belief on Him.

    The gardener has the work to do tokeep all weeds away and to cultivate the

    earth. The life in the seed does thegrowing.When one has accepted Christ with the

    heart, he has the life that will grow toSpiritual perfection by cultivation. Thefruits of the Spirit are all the beautifulqualities of soul that makes a life nobleand useful, but they are not at once seenproduced in their fullness. The apparent

    change may be great from that of aworldlingselfish, mercenary, vain andimpurebut it takes time to dig out theold roots and weeds, the seeds of whichare apt to have a periodicity of appear-ing. Many who think themselves firmlyfixed in well-doing, by lack of vigilance

    are caught napping and thrown down bysome fault of the past. Spirituality in itsearly stages is easily routed from theheart by worldly influences; nothing

    needs more tender nursing to preserveits hold upon the affections. The brain isthe connecting link and the thoughts ofthe mind must be fixed on a star, onreaching its ideal, in order to keep out ofthe many enticements the world offers,especially to the young.

    The Rosicrucian Teachings appeal tothe Christians somewhat weaned from

    the natural desires which have, perhaps,been fully experienced, and proven to bewanting in soul-satisfying qualities; butthe Natural dies slowly, the demands ofholiness are hard, and, especially inolder Christians, backsliding is notuncommon. Many come to any newteaching for the loaves and fishes, asgreat numbers have joined to a very pop-

    ular church for healing of their bodilyills, and remain for a continuing of theblessings of health. This motive wouldseem to be derogatory to soul-growth,but one cannot contact Spirituality with-out feeling its influence for uplift, and soin time those who come for selfish rea-sons, may become sincere followers ofthe faith. There are many wavering

    souls going from one cult to another tofind rest for the soles of their feet, andwhere the Truth is found in largest mea-sure, will the great multitude come forthe bread of life. They may be in greatearnest, most sincere, yet by no meansready for initiation. Plants that are to

    give abundance of blossom and fruitmust sometimes be transplanted severaltimes before they show true vigor, andwhen finally they reach their permanent

    home, they have still to wait throughlong months, even years of develop-ment, before fruit comes. Only the matu-rity of time brings full productivity.

    Read of the tears of any of the fathersor mothers of the Church, the Saints whokept the faith and finished their course toGod; their path has not been one ofroses. Daily dying to self, to natural pas-

    sions, to destroyers of the flesh, dailysacrifices on the cross of the physicalbody, with eyes fixed on the Lord, withChrist ushered into the heart, with allones gifts on the altar in consecration tohumanity.

    Christians are of as many kinds andqualities as sea craft: Some only rowboats tied to the shore, fearful to venture

    alone; some bolder, but afraid of deepwaters; then the Ocean Greyhound, pre-pared for the voyage, well manned, theCaptain at his post, eye on the compass.But even such strike a rock sometimesor fail to weather a gale, go down. Thereare otherssubmarines which explorethe secrets of the deep.

    Such are our Rosicrucian Fellowship

    Leaders, perhaps deep in the secrets ofthe government, on important missions,advance guards of research, hard to find,difficult to destroy, overcomers of theenemy of souls. Then there are airships;these are symbols of the Elder Brothers,who sail another element. They are aloft

    in the clear atmosphere of a rare air, andsee beyond the mists which hide the pastand future from our limited view. Thesetypes did not come into being in a day.

    There are ages of development betweenthe frail rowboat and the submarine orairship.

    GLIMPSES OF A PAST LIFE

    A number of years ago the writer visit-ed Minneapolis to deliver a course of

    lectures, and there became acquaintedwith Miss Margaret S, a commercialphotographer, who made our lanternslides for Parsifal, The NieblungsRing, etc. We became well acquainted,and in the course of conversations aboutcertain charts, also being made intoslides, the subject of rebirth cameunder discussion.

    Miss S. had only a vague idea of theteaching. It seemed rather a new ideathat life is a Great School and that wecome back to it, life after life, to learnnew lessons, as a child goes back to anearthly school, day after day, for thesame purpose.

    But it seemed to throw light upon aproblem that had puzzled her for years.

    She had a little sister Anne, who wassuch an odd child, and who imaginedsuch queer things that it was almost dis-tressing to the other members of thefamily. She insisted that she had livedbefore, and last time she was in Canada,where, she said, I took the gates.

    She was only a baby, she could nothave heard it from anyone in the family,for none understood, or believed inrebirth. There is thus only one reason-

    able hypothesis; namely, that she carriedthe consciousness over from the past.Miss S. did not at that time know what

    the expression I took the gates meant,but an article in July American

    Magazine has the story of little Annesimaginations, which won first prize.We reprint the article as there published:

    Anne, my little half-sister, youngerby fifteen years, was a queer little mitefrom the beginning. She did not evenlook like any member of the family weever heard of, for she was dark almost toswarthiness, while the rest of us all werefair, showing our Scotch-Irish ancestryunmistakably.

    As soon as she could talk in connect-

    ed sentences, she would tell herself fairystories, and just for the fun of the thing Iwould take down her murmurings withmy pencil in my old diary. She was myespecial chargemy mother being avery busy womanand I was veryproud of her. These weavings of fancywere never of the usual type that chil-drens fairy tales take; for, in addition to

    the childish imagination, there were bitsof knowledge in them that a baby couldnot possibly have absorbed in any sort ofway.

    Another remarkable thing about herwas that everything she did she seemedto do through habit, and, in fact, such

    was her insistence, although she wasnever able to explain what she meant byit. If you could have seen the roisteringair with which she would lift her mug of

    milk when she was only three and gulp itdown at one quaffing, you would haveshaken with laughter. This particularlyembarrassed my mother and shereproved Anne repeatedly.

    The baby was a good little soul, andwould seem to try to obey, and then inan absent-minded moment would bringon another occasion for mortification.

    I cant help it, Mother, she would sayover and over again, tears in her babyvoice Ive always done it that way!

    So many were the small incidents ofher habits of speech and thought andher tricks of manner and memory thatfinally we ceased to think anythingabout them, and she herself was quiteunconscious that she was in any way dif-

    ferent from other children.One day when she was four years oldshe became very indignant with Fatherabout some matter and, as she sat curledup on the floor in front of us, announcedher intention of going away forever.

    Back to heaven where you camefrom? inquired Father with mock seri-ousness. She shook her head.

    I didnt come from heaven to you,she asserted with that calm conviction towhich we were quite accustomed now.I went to the moon first, butYouknow about the moon, dont you? Itused to have people on it, but it got sohard that we had to go.

    This promised to be a fairy tale, so Igot my pencil and diary.

    So, my father led her on, you camefrom the moon to us, did you?

    Oh, no, she told him in casual fash-ion. I have been here lots of timessometimes I was a man and sometimes Iwas a woman!

    She was so serene in her announce-ment that my father laughed heartily,which enraged the child, for she partic-ularly disliked being ridiculed in anyway.

    I was! I was! she maintained indig-nantly. Once I went to Canada when Iwas a man! I member my name, even.

    Oh, pooh-pooh, he scoffed, littleUnited States girls cant be men inCanada! What was your name that youmember so well?

    She considered a minute. It wasLishus Faber, she ventured, then repeat-

    ed it with greater assurance, that wasitLishus Faber. She ran the soundstogether so that this was all I could makeout of itand the name so stands in mydiary today, Lishus Faber.

    And what did you do for a living,Lishus Faber, in those early days? Myfather then treated her with the mocksolemnity befitting her assurance and

    quieting her nervous little body.I was a soldiershe granted theinformation triumphantlyand I tookthe gates!

    That is all that is recorded there.Over and over again, I remember, we

    HOW TO PROVE PSYCHIC

    EXPERIENCES

    Question:

    How can one differentiate between theillusive experiences of an ordinarydream and the real experiences of anInvisible Helper? Is there any way toprove that one has been in certain placesdoing definite work while the physicalbody was lying asleep on the bed?Answer:

    Yes, if you have really been out ofyour physical body and succeeded incarrying the memory through at the timeof waking, there may be a number ofways in which you may prove to your-self and also to others if you wish, thatyou have been, on that certain occasionat any rate, liberated from your body,been able to function as a free spirit out-side in space. A number of people, whoread a magazine article like this areprobably unacquainted with ourPhilosophy.

    We will therefore begin at the begin-ning by stating that man is not only thephysical body that we see with our eyes,but has vehicles made of finer texturesin which he is able to function when thephysical body has been laid to rest insleep. It is, in fact, the withdrawal of the

    spirit with its consciousness and thefiner vehicles that induces sleep. In themajority of mankind the spirit clothed inits finer vehicles hovers close by thephysical body when that is resting. Itusually ruminates upon the affairs of theday, but does not seem to take muchinterest in anything going on about it,until by certain exercises, by a study ofthe higher philosophies, and by living alife of helpfulness it is gradually awak-ened to the reality of life outside thebody.

    Then it begins to take small excursionsof investigation, or maybe it allies itselfwith a group of kindred spiritsthat alldepends upon the temperament of theperson in question, for our character isnot altered by the fact of going to sleep;we are there what we are here.

    But there are times when a man orwoman becomes so interested in thework of this world that upon going tosleep the spirit cannot tear itself awayentirely from the physical body. It is halfin and half out, it is in touch with thescenes of the Invisible World and stillruminating over the occurrences of theprevious day. Then we have that con-fused state of consciousness we calldreams, and these constitute the noctur-nal experiences of the majority of peo-

    ple. But when, as said, one commencesto study the higher philosophy, andabove all to live the life of helpfulness inthe day time, when one performs certain

    exercises in the evening with faithful-ness and zeal, one of the first symptomsof true consciousness during the nighttime, and experiences in the invisibleworld, is thisthat the illusive chaoticdreams become logical and rational.When that stage is reached, we never seeourselves going about with our headunder our arm or chasing a cow up a

    telegraph pole because we feel it oughtto roost at the top among the crosspieces, or perform kindred idiotic tricks,but we find ourselves going about in ourordinary matter of fact way doing thingsthere much in the same way as we woulddo them here; save for certain such factsas that if we wish to go from one placeto another, we do not walk or take a car,

    but we simply, by the very thought, risein the air and ride through space until wecome to our destination. Then we are nothampered by locked doors or closedwindows, but pass directly through thewall into the rooms where we wish to be,and start to do the work we have comefor.

    Moreover, we may find that space and

    distance have almost ceased to exist, andthat a journey to a suffering friend a fewthousand miles away takes only amoment; but these things do not indicatethat we are merely having an ordinaryillusive dream, for, as said, such are thelaws of the Invisible World, that we trav-

    el with the speed greater than electricity,whenever we wish to do so. There is noweight to these invisible bodies. It is ourwill that determines our place in relation

    to the earth. We may walk on the streetor glide over the housetops at will.Besides, as it is well known that theatoms in all physical substances do notactually touch one another, but, so tosay, swim in the sea of ether, it is per-fectly possible for the free-spirit to passits invisible body through the intersticesbetween the atoms in a brick or cement

    wall, as Christ did when He appeared tohis disciples after the door had beenlocked.

    Bearing these facts in mind, supposethat some night you become acquaintedwith a person outside the body, that per-haps you worked together for weeks ormonths, and that in the course of con-versation you find that your friend lives

    in New York or London, and that youhad occasion to visit him there whilefunctioning in your invisible body. Letus further suppose that then it becamenecessary for you to take a business tripto the city where your friend is located.You tell him of this contemplated move,on one of your night excursions. Heinvites you to be his guest during your

    stay in that city and you accept the invi-tation.On the following day you start for

    your destination and on arrival you takea car as directed by him, you get off atthe corner you know so well already,walk up to the house, knock at the door,

    and your friend comes to meet you. Hetakes you by the hand physically, as hehas often done ethereally in the InvisibleWorld. You commence right away to

    talk about things you have done outsidethe body, and you know each other aswell as old friends in the physical worldwould know; or, in other words, youcontinue the relationship in the physicalbody, exactly as it was formed outside inthe invisible world.

    That is one of the ways of proving theactuality of your experiences during the

    time when the body slept. While wehave put the case hypothetically, it is notaltogether so. The writer, for instance,had such experiences in a number ofcases. One of them has been told in thepamphlet Our Work in the World, andwhile we do not relate these experiences

    just for the sake of gossip, there is some-times an object to be gained by giving

    personal testimony, so we repeat it inpart:At a time when the writer had, unwit-

    tingly, of course, passed the test set bythe Elder Brothers, to see if he wouldprove true as their messenger, one ofthem, who had previously come into ourpresence when the door was locked,appeared again and notified us that we

    had been selected to promulgate theRosicrucian Teachings, which we wereto receive at the Temple. To reach thatplace he directed us to proceed the nextmorning to a certain railway station inBerlin, buy a ticket for a place of whichwe had never heard, and take a train that

    would go at a certain designated time.Accordingly, we started the next morn-ing for the railway station named,bought a ticket for the said station, found

    that the train went at the time our visitorhad told us. Upon arrival at our destina-tion we met the Elder Brother himself,clothed in his physical body and were byhim conducted to the environs of theTemple, which is not physical but ethe-real, and therefore invisible to the peoplein the neighborhood, who are not awarethat the Great Western Wisdom School

    is located in their midst.The writer was not asleep at the timewhen the Elder Brother entered his roomand gave the directions which led to themeeting, nor was he at that time able tofocus his Spiritual Sight at will, or toleave his body when desired. These fac-ulties were awakened at the time of thefirst initiation, which took place in the

    Temple shortly afterward; but the ElderBrother in that case materialized suffi-ciently to enable the writer to see him,and therefore the experience does notprove what may happen when the bodyis asleep, but it proves that at the timewhen the writer received the afore-men-tioned directions, he was not under ahallucination, and it also proves that it is

    possible for a free spirit to enter a roomand there materialize for a certain pur-pose, as the invisible Helpers not infre-quently have to do.

    When the writer says proves hemeans, of course, that it proved this factto himself. Each must obtain that per-

    sonal proof, they cannot be proved tosomeone else. The testimony is merelygiven for the purpose of showing howsuch things are done.

    While relating personal experiences, itmay perhaps not be out of place either,to say that once the writer was caught bya camera, for you know that the cameratakes etheric vibrations, and that whilemany of the so-called spirit photographsare impostures, there are also the real.The incident in question happened whenthe writer was in a hospital just recover-

    ing from a serious breakdown caused byseveral years of very close study andoverwork. Previous to that time we hadno psychic experiences, but on a Sundaymorning, when a dear friend was leavingfor Europe, we felt particularly lone-some and intently desirous of seeing ourfriend.

    Suddenly, as if by magic, we found

    ourself standing outside the bed lookingat the poor wasted body which lay inertand asleep; but we felt no fear, every-thing seemed to be all right. Carriedthence by the desire that had originallyliberated us from the body, we traveledin a fraction of a second the twenty milesto the harbor of San Pedro, where wefound ourself on the steamer with our

    friend. The boat was in the act of leav-ing, and at that moment a mutual friendsnapped a camera on shore. When thefilm was developed, the face of thewriter with a growth of beard of severalweeks standing, acquired in the hospital,was distinctly visible. This picture has

    since been recognized by a number ofmutual acquaintances who were noteven told, and it is probably that thiscase could really be established in such a

    manner as to constitute almost legalproof, for it could readily be shown thatthe writer was in the hospital at the timewhen his friend, standing on board thatship (which is also in the photograph, ofcourse) was leaving and the photographtaken. But the old saying, a man con-vinced against his will is of the sameopinion still, is so true that doubtless a

    great percentage of people would repu-diate it as an imposture any way, so whatis the use; conviction must come fromwithin before it would be accepted.

    There have also been certain proofs ofthe fact that some people are consciousoutside the body, in some of the latermagazines. Among others, DoctorStuart Leech in the September number

    of theRays From the Rose Cross, tells ofthe experience he had when one of hispatients was in a critical stage withappendicitis. Both he and the two otherdoctors visited the boy in their invisiblebodies during the night, adjusting thematter so that when they arrived for thephysical consultation the followingmorning, they found the boy perfectly

    well. We have also printed the story ofMiss Kerin, who was herself miracu-lously cured by an Invisible Helper. Shehas been seen on other occasions help-ing the sick and wounded on the battle-fields of Europe and as so many of theInvisible Helpers are doing at the pre-

    sent time. Thus, there is considerabletestimony to the fact that people who arestill living in their physical bodies dur-ing the daytime are engaged in spiritual

    work during the night and that theirexperience carried over to the wakingconsciousness are not illusory dreams.

    But you ask: Is there any way toprove that one has been in a certain placedoing certain definite work? You mayhave been somewhere, doing something,and then upon waking you are desirousof knowing whether it has been a dream

    or an actual fact. If that is your case, wewould advise that the next time you findyourself outside the body in a place, inyour home city that you can get to thefollowing day, you should then note cer-tain little details about the place whichyou may recognize afterward.

    Suppose that you find yourself in thewaiting room of a railway station in your

    city, then count the windows in theroom, count the benches and take partic-ular notice of their arrangement, noticethe place of the telephone booth, if thereis such a one in the place, and any otherthings that you have not noticed in yourprevious visits to the place, and whichcannot be altered by a human handbefore you can get there the following

    morning. Write down the facts as soonafter waking as possible so that they donot slip your mind, and then at your con-venience take the street car to the depotin question, walk into the waiting roomand there at your leisure count the win-dows, note the arrangement of the

    benches, the telephone booth, etcetera.That itself will give you a fair reason tobelieve you were there during the night,if you find that you have been correct in

    what you brought over. If the placewhere you find yourself while out of thebody is the house of a friend, which alsooccasionally happens, follow the samemethod of noting things that you havenot particularly paid attention to in yourprevious visits to your friends house.Count the chairs in the room, notice ifthere are any scratches or marks on the

    furniture which could be readily recog-nized on a later occasion, and so onaccording to the suggestions of yourown ingenuity. In that way you willundoubtedly find the proof you desire,or knowledge that you were mistaken inbelieving yourself there.

    CHANGING WATER TO WINE

    QuestionPlease tell me what Jesusmeant when he said to his mother MaryWoman, what have I to do with thee,mine hour has not yet come.John,2:4.

    AnswerThis is another case wherethe Bible translators mistranslated the

    Greek text in a most unwarrantable man-ner. The remark was made on the occa-sion of the marriage in Cana, when Marythe mother of Jesus is said to have cometo him saying that there was no wine.Jesus then answered in the followingGreek words: Ti emo kai soi gunai.

    Translated literally this is what (is that)to me and to thee, O woman, my timehas not yet come, and even apart fromthe esoteric significance of the remark,

    this seems very much nicer than thecoarse answer attributed to Jesus in thepopular version of King James. But itshould also be remembered that theChrist was not the son of Mary in thesame sense that Jesus was, and thatbecause he used the body of Jesus, Hedid not recognize physical relationshipto Mary and was therefore perfectly jus-

    tified in addressing her as woman.But there is another and deeper signif-icance to the whole proceedings at themarriage at Cana. It has been taught inthe Rosicrucian literature that theGospels are not histories of the life of anindividual called Christ or Jesus, whowas unique among mankind, butalthough the Jesus of the Gospels did

    live, the Gospels themselves are storiesor formulas of initiation, and the mar-riage at Cana, at which Christ performedhis first miracle, was something fargreater than a mere marriage ceremonyof a man and woman in ordinary life. Itwas, in fact, a mystic marriage of thehigher and lower self under the neworder of Temple Service then inaugurat-

    ed, by Christ, for in the Atlantean Epochwater had been used in the temples; butfor the Aryan Epoch wine was essentialand the Christ as high priest ratified itsuse at the beginning of his ministry, andhe used it later on, on some occasions,notably at the so-called last supper. At

    that time he gave the specific command,this do ye till I come.

    Different races have lived upon earthat various times, and they have been dif-

    ferently constituted than we are today.The first human race is symbolized inthe Bible by the name Adam. Theywere of the earth, earthy, that is to saythey had only a mineral body, for theywere formed of the mineral earth. Thesecond race is symbolized under thename Cain, they had both a dense min-eral body and also an etheric or vital

    body. Therefore they were plant-like,and a plant food was given them to eat;hence we hear that Cain tilled the soiland planted grain. The third race alsoevolved a desire body and because ofthis emotional and passional nature theybecame animal-like, therefore animalfood or flesh was given them to eat andwe read that Nimrod was a might

    hunter.Lastly the mind was added as a linkbetween the three-fold body and thethree-fold spirit, which then entered thebody and became an indwelling spirit,an Ego. In order that this Ego mightlearn the lesson on earth, it must forgetfor the time being its heavenly spiritualorigin. To this end a new food was given

    it, and wine, a spirit fermented outsidethe body, was first used by Noah, theAtlantean hierarch, to deaden the truespirit dwelling in the body. Under theintoxicating influence of this pseudospirit man gradually forgot his divineorigin and focused his whole attention

    upon the lessons to be learned in thisworld, but however humanity indulgedin this new article of nutrition, wine,despite even the orgies that were held in

    exoteric services, the sanctuaries of allthe ancient dispensations were servedby water, and the highest and holiest oftheir priests never allowed wine to passtheir lips. Hence they were not blindleaders of the blind, but they saw clear-ly the invisible world and knew thesacred mystery of life.

    During the earlier Epochs of mans

    evolution he had been guided by theVisible Messengers of the DivineHierarchies, whom he revered as God,and even after they left him, prophetsand seers continued in his midst to testi-fy to the reality of God and the invisiblerealms. The Ancient religions alsotaught the doctrine of rebirth, and thusman knew that he progressed by the

    experience gained in a series of earthybodies of gradually improving texture.For that reason many Hindus, whobelieve in rebirth, feel that there is noneed of haste in evolution.

    But in order that man in the WesternWorld, where the pioneer races dwell,might apply himself with his whole souland his whole mind to master the secrets

    of earth life, it was designed that heshould be entirely deprived of this teach-ing, and also that the spiritual advisershould be blinded for the time being tothe conscious knowledge of God and thevision of the inner worlds, so that allmankind would be left to stand upon its

    own legs during the new dispensation,and would consequently apply them-selves altogether to the material evolu-tion in store for them. Wine wrought

    this in the world exoterically from thebeginning, and its use was sanctioned inthe temple by the first miracle. Christthen changed the water formally used inall mystic rites, to wine. Also at thelast supper he gave this beverage tohis disciples and commanded them tocontinue its use until he comes. By thismeans the veil of the temple was rent

    and the Mystic Light extinguished,and from that time the blind have beenled by the blind, for the spiritual leadersof the masses are just as devoid of firsthand knowledge as those whom theyprofess to guide.

    The Piscean age, or the time when theSun by precession is going through thesign Pisces, the fishes, is nearly spent

    however. During that period the oppo-site sign from Pisces, the fishes, namelythe Celestial Virgin, has been the ideal ofman; she has been worshiped by a celi-bate Priesthood who enjoined the eatingof fishes upon their charges at certaintimes of the week and the year. In thePictorial Zodiac the sign Virgo has awheat ear in one hand.

    Both of the grain and the grape areproducts of the vegetable kingdom, andthe immaculate Celestial Virgin there-fore embodied the first principle of theimmaculate conception, the blood(wine) and the body (bread) of theChrist. To these things the celibate

    Priesthood, which directed the worship,have called attention during the Pisceanage, which is now soon spent, and thewine is therefore fast being abolished

    from the temple service and from the useof the masses, with the result that a cor-responding measure of sensitiveness isbeing experienced, for the Divine Spirithidden within each human being isawakening from its toxic sleep ,inducedby the spirit of wine, and is beginning toremember its divine origin and heritageof life, without beginning and without

    end.It is noteworthy in this connection thatall the clergy of the various countries inthe old world, and the Catholic Priests inAmerica as well, still continue to usewine and liquors as a daily beverage,and it is more than significant that whenthe Parliament of England, the King andthe Nobles, who represent the Statecraft,

    endeavored to pass laws looking towardprohibition of the sale of liquor inEngland, the measure fell flat on accountof the determined opposition of thehighest dignitaries of the church.

    This attitude of the European clergydoes not imply, however, that they aredegraded, nor to be censured in anyrespect whatever. Humanity has still

    many lessons to learn which can only belearned in the age of wine. When theneed of the counterfeit spirit has passed,it will go into disuse without need of leg-islative measures, which generally do nogood, for it is absolutely impossible tolegislate morality into people. Until the

    consent to a law is given from within,they are bound to break it to secure thegratification of their desires, regardlessof restrictive measures.

    QuestionWhat is meant by the Electbeing caught up in the air to meet theLord? Does that refer to a physicaluprising?

    AnswerThis passage occurs in FirstThess., 4:17, and in the Fifth chapter ofthe same epistle, the 23rd verse, you readas follows:

    And may the very God of peace sanc-tify you entirely, and your whole being,the spirit, soul, and body be preservedblameless in the coming of our LordJesus Christ.

    Thus Paul recognizes that man is acomposite being consisting of threepartsthe Sprit, the Soul and the Body.If you will now turn to the Fifteenth

    chapter of First Corinthians you willfind there that he says, Flesh and bloodcannot inherit the kingdom of God; andspeaking to them further concerning thesame mystery he says, Behold! I showyou a mystery, we shall not all die butwe shall all be changed in a moment, inthe twinkling of an eye; and in theforty-fourth verse which has been mis-

    tion, and read the text as a naturalbody, instead of a soul body. This soulbody is composed of ether and capableof levitation. Without this faculty it

    would be impossible for us to meet theLord in the air, or to become a citizen ofthe Kingdom of the Heavens, preachedby Christ and His Apostles.

    Let it be thoroughly understood thatmankind has always traveled outwardfrom the center of the earth in its evolu-tion. Adam, the primitive man, wasmade of the red (hot) earth, for at that

    time our globe was still in a cooling con-dition, aglow with the red fires of theforming crust. Next we are told that amist went up from the cooling planetand mankind at that time lived as chil-dren of the mist in the valleys of theearth.

    Later, when the mist condensed intowater, and falling, filled the earths

    basins, man moved to the highlands, hispresent abode, above the waters. Whenhe has dropped the dense earth fleshybody, which Paul says cannot inherit theKingdom of God, he will ascend into theair in the glorious soma psuchicon, orsoul body, to take up a new phase ofevolution, for there we shall not dealwith concrete things in the same sense as

    we do now, but we shall learn to workwith life, instead of with dead things.Thus the bible says exactly what itmeans when it tells us we are to becaught up in the air, in the twinkling ofan eye, so that we may be fit inhabitantsof the new Jerusalem, when that comes

    out of the heavens, or becomes visible.It should also be understood that thiskingdom is now being prepared ,thoughit is invisible to most people; it is never-

    HOW TIME IS DETERMINED

    In ordinary life we usually considertime as being measured by the move-ment of the hands of a watch or clock.The pride with which many a man refersto the accuracy of his timepiece showshow much an accurate knowledge oftime is prized by civilized races. Whenwe stop to think how dependent we are,every day of our lives, upon a knowl-edge of correct time, we begin to realizewhat a debt the world owes to theastronomer who provides this knowl-edge. Nevertheless, in spite of our dailyand even hourly use of watch and clock,very few really know how time is deter-mined.

    Many years ago the sun dial was usedto show sun time, the hour of noon beingindicated when the shadow lay on a duenorth-and-south line. But the timeshown in this way is not exact for, owingto the fact that the sun is not at the cen-ter of the earths orbit, the time betweensuccessive instants when the shadow liesdue north and south is different at vari-ous times of the year. Accordingly,clocks were made to run in such a waythat the length of a day was the samethroughout the year and equal to the

    average length of the day as shown bythe sun dial. This is called mean time.The sun, however, is so large that it isnot easy to observe it exactly, so theastronomer, who for some purposesneeds the most accurate time obtainable,turned to the stars.

    The stars move across the sky just likethe sun. By careful observation theexact times at which certain stars cross anorth-and-south line in the sky havebeen determined. This time is known tothe hundredth part of a second for abouta thousand stars.

    A special telescope, usually called atransit instrument, is used for time deter-minations. It is set up in such a way thatit can point only along a north-and-southline in the heavens. One of these thou-sand stars is then observed in this tele-scope and the instant of time when it isexactly in the middle of the field of viewis noted and recorded by an automaticregistering device.

    If the clock which the astronomer usesshows the time at which he knows thestar crossed the center of the field ofview, it is showing correct time. If not,it is either fast or slow and the amountby which it is in error is determined.Usually a number of the so-called clock

    speculation and Jupiter in the eleventhhouse, governing hopes and wishes;hence, he can never succeed in that man-ner. Speaking about finances, we may

    say that Uranus sextile Jupiter showsthat Rudolph will benefit by inheritanceor legacy.

    Mercury in the eleventh house givesmany acquaintances, but few friends.Saturn conjunction Venus, and Moonopposition Jupiter, shows that it will bebest for him to steer clear of the oppositesex as much as possible.

    The aspects which the Moon makes byProgression show the marriages of man,and in this case there are several opposi-tions before, about thirty years of age,the Moon reaches the trine of the Sun.Therefore, an early marriage wouldprove decidedly detrimental.

    Regarding health, we find that the Sunconjunction Saturn, and the Moon oppo-

    sition to Jupiter from the sign of theheart, Leo, obstructs the heart action tosome extent. Therefore he should not gointo any athletic sports, just take the nec-essary exercises along scientific lines soas to strengthen the constitution withoutstraining the heart. Otherwise, he has afairly healthy body, though there is atendency to excess of urine and scalding,

    because of the presence of Mars inLibra, the sign which rules the kidneys,but with proper attention to the food thiscan be readily corrected.

There is, however, beneath thecold and unapproachable proud exterior,a volcano of love, signified by Uranustrine Venus, and the outward attituderesults partially from an attempt to hide

    this side of her nature. This love natureyou, as parents, must endeavor to fosterby your love.

    She will have many moods, Venus inGemini gives inconstancy of affection,and its trine to Uranus will make hervery unconventionally inclined whenshe grows up to girlhood. Therefore youmust endeavor to make the home so

    What is going to cause Edith the great-est trouble in her life is that she cannotexpress herself just as she means. In thefirst place, her ideas are too far advanced

    that no matter how well she means, sheis bound to be misunderstood, and she isreally entitled to all the tolerance andsympathy that can be given to her. This

    ninth house position also renders herliable to law suits, and loss willinevitably follow therefrom. She oughtto be taught to guard herself and neverunder any provocation go to law.

    Edith will always be comfortably sup-plied with the worlds goods. Mars inLeo, and Jupiter in the fourth houseshows that this is particularly true in the

    heart action. There are certain physicalexercises and deep breathing which willcorrect this tendency, so that the heartaction will grow strong and rhythmicwith the years, if it is attended to fromthe beginning.

    This is a case where a parent can dowonderful service to the child by know-ing such a flaw and applying the ounce

    of prevention. Some day physicians willbe taught Astrology in their colleges andthey will then be a real help to parents bycasting the horoscopes of the childrenthey bring into the world and advisingfrom the very beginning, how theyshould be treated.

    How much sorrow and trouble theycould save if they were thus enlightened

    and capable of giving valuable advice toparents. Then in later life of the childthey could watch it and see how the ten-dencies worked out; thus helping to cul-tivate strong, healthy physical bodies forthe spirits expression.     THE HOROSCOPE OF A SUICIDE

    As soon as we look at the horoscope todetermine the mentality of this person,

    as we usually do before considering any-thing else, we see that there is somethingwrong, for Mercury is behind the Sunand entirely unaspected, and as the plan-ets are never active save when there is aconfiguration between them, it is evidentthat this person cannot be a good reason-er, if able to exercise that faculty at all.The trine of Mars and the Moon, Mars

    being in the ninth house, is somewhat ofa help and makes him cunning, particu-larly as Saturn is also trine to the Moon.The Moon and Mercury are the swiftest

    planets and therefore apt significators ofthe mind, which is unstable beyondwords, but the trine of Saturn to theMoon and her trine of Mars helps tocheck it so that he is able to sense thingsrather than to reason them out. TheMoon in conjunction with Neptune

    makes him a dreamer rather than aworker. The only one redeeming featurein this horoscope is the trine of Saturn toJupiter.

    Saturn is in the ninth house sign, signi-fying the higher mind, law, religion, etc.,and in trine to Jupiter the ruler of theninth sign. This would give him someability to make a success of law, provid-ed he could rise above the lower aspectsmentioned, and as a matter of fact, hedid take up this study and was admittedto the bar, but we find that Mars is in

    opposition to the Sun from the third andninth houses. Therefore he lacks energyto prosecute his calling.

    Saturn in the first house always givesthe people so afflicted a tendency tobrood and look upon the dark side ofthings. They always think that everymans hand is against them and have agreat deal of self-pity. So it was with this

    man, he did not wish to exert himself,but loved rather to dream, as denoted bythe Moon conjunction Neptune. Peoplewho have that configuration, dream dayand night. They dislike exerting them-selves physically but are adepts at build-ing air-castles, and therefore they nevermake a success at anything.

    It is all right to dream; visions and

    ideals are necessary if we are to advanceat all; nevertheless, we must worktowards our ideals and struggle to makethe dreams come true, a quality whichwas lacking in this poor fellow.

    The Moon conjunction Neptune in thefifth house, and square to Uranus, shows

    us the direction of these dreams. Thefifth house is the house of pleasure andcourtship, among other things.Therefore his ambitions ran in that

    direction. He proposed to almost everywoman he knew after he had met her thesecond time, but Venus, the planet ofattraction and ruler of the seventh house,which denotes marriage, is also entirelyunaspected in this horoscope. Moreover,the Moon and Neptune in Aries, the signof the head, which excited his eroticdreams, is in configuration with Saturn

    and Uranus.Therefore it was impossible for him toeven become engaged, and the repeatedrefusals naturally increased his morbidself-pity. As the years went by hebecame more and more of a recluse, hedrew into a shell, so to speak, pityinghimself as the most miserable being onearth.

    The Saturnine sign Capricorn, beingintercepted in the second house, it is eas-ily seen that his financial circumstanceswere of the very worst. What else couldbe expected by one who refuses to doany useful work, save when compelledby the whip of necessity? But Jupiter inconjunction with Neptune and Moon inthe fifth house, the house of easy gains

    and speculations, attracted him to therace tracks, as the flame draws the moth.Naturally, however, he could not win,because Uranus squares these positionsfrom the eighth house.

    But despite his repeated failures healways went where there was gambling,

    with his last cent.A friend in a society which he hadjoined gave him employment, but wasforced to discharge him when it becameknown that he was a gambler. Then hisself-pity reached its height, and he wentto his room under the impression thatevery mans hand was against him,turned on the gas and was asphyxiated

    of July, 1907.The Lunation on the Tenth of July wasan eclipse and it fell in conjunction to hisradical Uranus in the eight house, thehouse of death. This excited the squareof Uranus at birth to Moon, Neptune andJupiter, so that he even neglected hiswork to attend the races, hoping forsome chimerical dark horse to put him

    beyond the immediate need of working;and he failed, of course. Then came thediscovery of his vice and the discharge.On the fourteenth, the eclipsed Moonwas in Virgo 4, exciting the oppositionof his progressed Moon to the radicalMercury. This was the last straw whichupset his mental balance, so that hekilled his body to escape material care.

    The configuration of Uranus squareMoon and Neptune had brought him intouch with the Invisible World, and hewould have become the abject tool ofspirit controls had not Saturn trineJupiter, Neptune and Moon saved him.And he knew that the spirit survives

    death, but, as said, what little reasoningpower he possessed was gone, and hesaw only the gloomy outlook of the pre-sent state and did not realize the awful

    tortures in store for the suicide.Some suicides say it is like the inces-sant pangs of hunger; others have com-pared it to a gnawing toothache felt allover the body, because the archetype ofthe dense body persists until the lifeshould have terminated under ordinaryconditions and seeks to draw to itselfphysical matter, but is unable to do so

    when the silver cord has been severed.Uranus governs gas and electricity;being in the eighth house and afflicted, itshows very well the manner of death.

    At the beginning of the Earth Periodthe Human Life Wave was composed oftwo groups known as Pioneers andStragglers. The pioneers were thosewho kept in the van during the Saturn,Sun, and Moon Periods. These pioneershave developed into the Aryan Races ofthe present day. The stragglers belongedto that portion of the Human Life Wavethat had failed to keep up with the pio-neers.

    In former periods one Kingdom, orLife Wave, gradually merged into thenext, but because of the crystallized con-dition prevailing here on earth, the linesbetween Life Waves and their sub-divi-sions must be more sharply drawn. Itbecame necessary, therefore, to separatea portion of the stragglers whose desirebodies would admit of division. Wherethis was possible the division enabledthem to become human vehicles, andsuch stragglers have developed into theMongolian, African, and lower races ofthe present day. Those whose desirebodies were incapable of division areour present day anthropoids. On page235 of the Rosicrucian CosmoConception we are told that they mayyet overtake our evolution if they reacha sufficient stage of advancement beforea certain critical point is reached, whichwill come in the middle of the FifthRevolution of this Earth Period. If theydo not overtake us by that time, they willhave lost touch with our evolution. Thehigher part of this divided desire body

    Given the same amount and kind offood, the person of serene and jovial dis-position will live longer, enjoy betterhealth, and be more active than the per-

    son who worries or loses his temper. Thelatter will make and distribute throughhis body more destructive white corpus-cles than the former. Were a scientist toanalyze the bodies of these two men, hewould find that there was considerablyless earthy matter in the body of the kind-ly-disposed man than in that of the scold.

    This destruction is constantly going

    on, and it is not possible to keep all thedestroyers out, nor is such the intention.If the vital body had uninterrupted sway,it would build and build, using all theenergy for that purpose. There would beno consciousness and thought. It isbecause the desire body checks andhardens the inner parts that conscious-ness develops.

    As has been stated heretofore, in theperiod immediately following birth, allthe vehicles are present, as in adult life,but they are merely present. None oftheir positive faculties are active. It isnot until they are able to assume chargeof their various functions that thesevehicles are said to be born. So we findthat it is not until the seventh year that

    the individual vital body is born fromthe womb of the Macrocosmic VitalBody; and it is not until the fourteenthyear that the individual desire body isborn from the womb of theMacrocosmic Desire Body. The force

    not needed by the vital body for furthergrowth, then becomes available forpropagative purposes. The excessivegrowth is checked, and the force is used

    that the human plant may flower andbring forth.Therefore the birth of the personal

    desire body marks the period of puberty.From this period the attraction towardthe opposite sex is felt, being especiallyactive and unrestrained in the thirdseptenary period of lifefrom the four-teenth to the twenty-first year, because

    the restraining mind is still unborn. (p.142)The desire body and the mind leave

    the dense and vital bodies during sleep.The Ego takes the desire body and mindinto the Desire World, which is an Oceanof wisdom and harmony. There the firstcare of the Ego is the restoration of therhythm and harmony of the mind and

    desire body. This restoration is accom-plished gradually as the harmoniousvibrations of the Desire World flowthrough them.

    There is an essence in the DesireWorld corresponding to the vital fluidwhich permeates the dense body bymeans of the vital body. The desire bodyand mind, as it were, steep themselves in

    this elixir of life, and when strengthenedcommence their work of restorationupon the vital body, which was left withthe dense body. It is only at death thatthe desire body leaves the dense bodypermanently.

    On page 167 we learn that in the desirebody there are a number of sense-cen-ters, but in the great majority of peoplethese centers are latent. It is the awak-

    ening of these centers of perception thatcorresponds to the opening of a blindmans eyes; that is, a world heretoforeknown to exist but invisible may now beseen at will. The matter in the humandesire body is in incessant motion ofinconceivable rapidity. There is in it nosettled place for any particle, as in thedense body. The matter that is at the

    head one moment may be at the foot inthe next and back again.There are no organs in the desire body,

    as in the dense and vital bodies, but thereare centers of perception, which, whenactive, appear as vortices, alwaysremaining in the same relative positionto the dense body, most of them aboutthe head. In the majority of people they

    are mere eddies, and are of no use ascenters of perception. They may beawakened in all, however, but differentmethods produce different results.

    In the involuntary clairvoyant devel-oped along improper, negative lines,these vortices turn from right to left, orin the opposite direction to the hands ofa clockcounter-clockwise.

    In the desire body of the properlytrained voluntary clairvoyant they turnin the same direction as the hands of aclockclockwise, glowing withexceeding splendor, far surpassing thebrilliant luminosity of the ordinary

    desire body. These centers furnish himwith means for the perception of thingsin the Desire World, and he sees andinvestigates as he wills; while the person

    whose centers run counter-clockwise islike a mirror, which reflects only whatpasses before it. Such a person is inca-pable of reaching out for information.This is one of the fundamental differ-ences between a medium and a properlytrained clairvoyant.

    It is impossible for most people to dis-tinguish between the two, yet there is

    one infallible rule that can be followedby anyone. No genuinely developedseer will ever exercise this faculty for

    money or its equivalent; nor will he

    use it to gratify curiosity; but only to

    help humanity.No one capable of teaching the proper

    method for the development of this fac-ulty will ever charge so much a lesson.

    Those demanding money for the exer-cise of, or for giving lessons in thesethings, never have anything worth pay-ing for. The above rule is a safe and sureguide, which all may follow withabsolute confidence.

    In the far distant future mans desirebody will become as definitely orga-nized as are the vital and dense bodies.

    When that stage is reached we shall havethe power to function in the desire bodyas we now do in the dense body, whichis the oldest and best organized of thesebodies of manthe desire body beingthe youngest.

    Our dense bodies are now in the fourthstage of development, having been start-ed in the Saturn Period, and workedupon through the Sun and Moon

    Periods, and we are at the present timeupon Globe D of the Earth Period. Thedesire body was started in the MoonPeriod and will be in its fourth stage ofdevelopment in the Venus Period, thesixth day of Manifestation. As Globe Dof the Venus Period is located in theDesire World (see diagram No. 9, p.197), neither a dense nor a vital body

    could be used as an instrument of con-sciousness; therefore the essences of theperfected dense and vital bodies willthen be incorporated in the completeddesire body, the latter thus becoming avehicle of transcendent qualities, mar-velously adaptable, and so responsive tothe slightest wish of the indwelling spir-it that in our present limitations it is

    beyond our utmost conception.Yet the efficiency of even this splendidvehicle will be transcended when in theVulcan Period its essence, together withthe essences of the dense and vital bod-ies, are added to the mind body, whichbecomes the highest of mans vehicles,containing within itself the quintessenceof all that was best in all the vehicles.

    The vehicle of the Venus Period beingbeyond our present power of conception,how much more so is that which will beat the service of the divine beings of theVulcan Period. (p. 422 Cosmo)

    During involution the spirit progressedby growing bodies, but evolution

    depends upon soul growththe trans-mutation of the bodies into soul. Thesoul is, so to say, the quintessence, thepower or force of the body, and when a

    body has been completely built andbrought to perfection through the stagesand periods, the soul is fully extractedtherefrom, and is absorbed by one ofthe three aspects of the spirit, which gen-erated the body in the first place.

    The soul is also threefold, being con-scious, intellectual and emotional, andon page 95 of the Cosmo we find that the

    Human Spirit emanates from itself theDesire Body, and extracts therefrom aspabulum, the Emotional soul.
