Saving 1.4 million jobs in Georgia
Georgia Trend: The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) established earlierthis year as part of the federal government’s Coronavirus, Aid, Relief andEconomic Security (CARES) Act, has provided more than $519 billion to smallbusinesses across the country. Implemented by the Small BusinessAdministration, the aim of the low-interest private loans, which can be forgivenin many cases, was to maintain jobs and stable wages for employees duringthe coronavirus pandemic.Recently business.org, an organization that provides tools and services to helpsmall businesses grow, looked at PPP loan data to find out how many jobswere saved by the funding and how each state was affected. The datarevealed that 1,472,782 jobs in Georgia were retained as a result of PPP loansto 156,814 small businesses. The total amount of funding businesses in thestate received was over $14.5 billion.Nationally, more than 50 million jobs have been retained, which reflects theprogram’s effectiveness in a time of high unemployment. Press Release: On the heels of the news that multiple Georgia-lensedproductions have received nearly 50 total 2020 Emmy Award nominations,Governor Brian P. Kemp announced that Georgia has been ranked the No. 1Film Production Leader by Business Facilities Magazine and prior to the globalCOVID-19 pandemic, was on pace for another record-setting year. This topranking is featured in the publication’s annual 2020 Rankings Report.“Georgia takes the crown in our new Film Production Leaders category, ranking the states that are the top locations for motion picture and TVproduction,” writes Business Facilities Magazine.
“Thank you to Business Facilities Magazine for featuring Georgia in their 2020Rankings Report,” said Governor Kemp. “Our production numbers showGeorgia was on pace for another record year for film before COVID-19, andthey confirm that Georgia continues to lead the way in film production. The filmindustry has had a significant impact in communities across the Peach State, and this top ranking puts a spotlight on the hardworking Georgians who are thereal faces of this great industry.”

another record-setting year before the COVID-19 response pausedproductions. Since this pause, productions in the state are beginning to heatup again with at least 20 currently in production or filming prep.
Also this week, Georgia-lensed productions tallied nearly 50 nominations fromthe Television Academy’s Emmys nominated, including “Watchmen,” “Ozark,”“Stranger Things,” “Love is Blind,” “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings: These BrokenBones,” and “The Outsider’s” guest actor Jason Bateman. HBO’s limited series“Watchmen,” and Netflix's hit “Stranger Things” also earned PeabodyAwards in June. Only 30 of 1,300 submissions receive the Peabody Award, which the Board of Jurors bestows on content judged to be the “mostcompelling and empowering” of the year.
In June, Governor Kemp announced that major motion picture, television, andstreaming companies would begin to resume production activity in Georgia, planning to bring back and hire an estimated 40,000 production workers, whowill be employed on an expected seventy-five production projects that willinvest over $2 billion into the Georgia economy during the next eighteenmonths.
“This No. 1 ranking, in addition to our record-setting production pace in filmprior to COVID-19, is a testament to everyone who is involved in the filmindustry in Georgia,” said Georgia Department of Economic DevelopmentCommissioner Pat Wilson. “I congratulate our Emmy-nominated productionson their exciting news, but especially congratulate our team in the Georgia FilmOffice, our Georgia-based crew, studios, small businesses, and our productionpartners across the state for this exceptional recognition. It’s heartening to seemore productions getting off the ground in recent weeks, and our relationshipwith our film partners is stronger than ever.”
Governor Kemp joined the Georgia Film Office in May to announce a filming“best practices” guide for Georgia that offers guidance for Georgia’s thrivingfilm and television industries to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 asproductions got underway. The recommendations were developed in closecooperation with officials from studio and production companies who maintaina presence in Georgia, and they can be found online at the Georgia FilmOffice’s website here.
“We congratulate our new Emmy nominees, and we are thrilled to berecognized by Business Facilities for our recent success,” said Georgia
