JHU MLax and the Friends of Jaclyn

The Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse team is partnered with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FOJ). This is the third time the Blue Jays have partnered with FOJ.

The Blue Jays “adopted” Connor Durgin on October 7, 2015 and he has been a fixture at games and other team events since then. He took part in the pregame meeting with officials and team captains when the Blue Jays hosted Syracuse on March 19, 2016 and made the trip to Penn State a month later and made the Blue Jays’ call on the coin toss (tails), which JHU won.

Durgin also took part in the pregame sched-ule against Penn State in 2017 and Ohio State this

The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life for children battling pediatric brain tumors and other child-hood cancers and to raise awareness through the Adopt-a-Child, Safe on the Sidelines and Guardian Angel Programs. FOJ does this by pairing the afflicted child and their siblings with local high school and college sports teams.

All-Time in the B1G Tournament: Including the semifinal win over Ohio State, Johns Hop-kins is 3-2 all-time in the B1G Tournament. The Blue Jays won the 2015 Tournament and fell in the semifinals in 2016 and 2017.

The B1G Neutral: Johns Hopkins is 3-0 all-time in Big Ten Tournament games played on a neutral field (Penn State & Ohio State in 2015 - Ohio State in 2018).

Getting Offensive in the B1G Tournament: Johns Hopkins has played five all-time games in the B1G Tournament and the Blue Jays have scored at least 12 goals in four of those five games. Below is a look at JHU’s all-time results in the B1G Tournament:

2015 SF #1 JHU-14, #4 PSU-92015 Final #1 JHU-13, #3 OSU-62016 SF #2 Rutgers-14, #3 JHU-122017 SF #2 OSU-15, #3 JHU-13

Close Calls: Each of Johns Hopkins’ five B1G regular season games this season and its B1G Semifinal against Ohio State have been decided by three goals or less. The Blue Jays topped third-seeded Ohio State, 13-10, and fourth-seeded Rutgers, 13-12, and fell to top-seeded Mary-land, 8-7, in triple overtime in the regular season. In addition, the Blue Jays beat Michigan (10-9) and fell at Penn State (14-12) and then topped Ohio State (6-5) in the semifinals.

What’s Next: The winner of the 2018 B1G Tournament will earn the league’s automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The field for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Sunday, May 6 at 9 pm (ESPNU).

The Nation’s Toughest Schedule: The perception of which team plays the nation’s toughest schedule may be in the eye of the beholder, but a case can certainly be made that in 2018 that team is Johns Hopkins. Consider:

• Johns Hopkins’ 2018 opponents currently have a combined record of 124-73 (.629). That’s the third-highest opponent winning percentage in the nation.

Scouting The Terrapins

Maryland Quickly: Maryland advanced to the Big Ten Championship game for the third con-secutive year as the Terps knocked off Rutgers, 12-9, in the Big Ten Semifinals.

What You Need to Know about the Terrapins- Maryland is gunning for its third consecutive Big Ten Tournament title as the Terps knocked off Rutgers (2016) and Ohio State (2017) in the last two championship games.

- The Terps rely heavily on a five-man offensive unit that ranks among the nation’s best. Senior Connor Kelly (38g, 31a) and sophomore Jared Bernhardt (33g, 14a) rank first and second on the team, respectively, in scoring, while Logan Wisnauskas (31g, 10a), Tim Rotanz (16g, 14a) and Bubba Fairman (18g, 6a) round out what might be the top five-man offensive unit in the nation.

- Justin Shockey and Austin Henningsen form a strong faceoff tandem as each has taken more than 145 faceoffs on the year. Shockey is 94-of-179 (.525), while Henningsen is 74-of-145 (.510). While most teams have one primary faceoff spe-cialist and a secondary man, the Terps have two proven performers they can count on.

- Maryland has outscored the opposition 48-23 in the first quarter and 91-54 in the first half.

- The Terps have converted on 23-of-38 (.605) ex-tra-man chances and have killed 30-of-40 (.750) man-down situations.

- Maryland’s last five games have been decided by five goals or less. UM is 6-2 in games decided by two goals or less.

Visitors to Homewood Field are greeted by a statue commemorating former Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse coach and Director of Athletics Robert H. Scott. The statue, which was unveiled in October 2016, is positioned at the main campus entrance to the stadium.

Scott, who passed away on September 15, 2016, spent 20 years as the men’s lacrosse coach at Johns Hop-kins (1955-74) and guided the Blue Jays to seven national championships, including the program’s first NCAA title in 1974. He continued to serve the University as the Director of Athletics until 1995.

Many Johns Hopkins teams wore patches on their uniforms last year in honor of Scott; the men’s lacrosse patches included seven stars to commemorate his seven national championships.

• The Blue Jays’ 13 regular-season opponents combined to post a 135-73 (.649) record in 2017.• Johns Hopkins will play three teams that advanced to at least the NCAA Semifinals last sea-

son and seven that played in the NCAA Tournament.

Comeback Kids: Johns Hopkins erased a 9-2 halftime deficit with a 13-4 second-half surge to knock off Virginia, 15-13, on March 24.

There is no record of Johns Hopkins previously overcoming a seven-goal deficit to win a game (this is not to say it hasn’t happened, but there are no records indicating such a comeback).

Johns Hopkins had twice overcome a six-goal deficit to win a game under head coach Dave Pi-etramala (@ Syracuse-2005, vs. Virginia-2017). Prior to those two six-goal rallies, the Blue Jays had knocked off Princeton, 12-11, in the 1999 season opener after trailing 9-3.

The Blue Jays did erase a 7-0 deficit against Princeton in 2015 and led the Tigers 15-13 be-fore falling 16-15 in overtime.

So, in the last 20 years, the Blue Jays have three rallies from six-goal deficits to win and, now, one from a seven-goal hole.

More Comebacks: Johns Hopkins has erased at least a three-goal deficit to win three times this season. The Blue Jays trailed 4-1 against Delaware, 9-2 at Virginia and trailed at Rutgers as late as 9-6 in the third quarter before rallying for a 13-12 victory.

Hopkins also came from two goals down (on three different occasions) to top Ohio State in the B1G Semifinals.

Late-Game Heroics: Kyle Marr scored the game-winning goal in the 13-12 win at Rutgers with 14 seconds remaining in regulation. Pri-or to this, it was nearly seven years to the day since JHU had last scored a goal in the final two minutes of regulation to win a game and more than eight years since the Jays had scored in the final minute to win. Marr was back at it again at Michigan as he netted the game-winner with 31.1 seconds remaining in regulation.

Junior Alex Concannon joined the list of late-game heroes as he netted the game-winner against Ohio State in the B1G Semifinals with an unassisted goal with 11.3 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Quinn to Receive Tewaaraton Legends Awards

Current Johns Hopkins volunteer assistant coach Larry Quinn, who guided the Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse team to a pair of NCAA Championships during his career at Homewood, has been named the 2018 recipient of the Tewaaraton Foundation Legends Award it was announced on January 19, 2018. Quinn is the second Blue Jay to win the award as he joins Joe Cowan, the 2013 recipient.

Quinn played at Johns Hopkins from 1982-85 and ranks among the great goalies in college lacrosse his-tory. He started the final two seasons of his career and guided the Blue Jays to a 27-1 record and NCAA Championships in 1984 and 1985. Johns Hopkins was also the national runner-up during his freshman and sophomore years.

Quinn posted a school-record .708 save percentage in 1984, when the Blue Jays posted a 14-0 record. He earned First Team USILA All-America honors that season and was the recipient of the C. Markland Kelly Award as the nation’s top goalie and the Enners Award as the nation’s top player.

With Quinn in the goal in 1985, the Blue Jays posted a 13-1 record and claimed their second consecutive national championship. He posted a .645 save percentage as a senior, when he repeated as a First Team USI-LA All-American and again claimed the Kelly and Enners Awards. That year, he also became the first Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse player to earn a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Since Quinn graduated in 1985, only three players have earned the Enners Award in consecutive years and only twice has a goalie won the award in the 33 years since Quinn claimed his second.

Quinn later served as assistant coach at Johns Hopkins and played for the United States National Team at the 1986, 1990 and 1994 ILF World Championships. He helped guide the United States to the World Championship in each of those years and earned All-World and Best Goalie honors at the 1986 championships.

More Extra-Extra: Johns Hopkins led the nation and set a school record for extra-man percentage by convert-ing on 26-of-43 (.605) EMO chances last season. The Blue Jays’ 60.5% conversion rate last season is the fourth-best in NCAA history.

A Final Extra: The 2018 season is the 12th for Bobby Benson as the Blue Jays’ offensive coordinator. Since he took over, the Johns Hopkins extra-man offense has con-verted on 40% or more of its EMO chances eight times in 11 seasons, including each of the last six. Johns Hopkins has finished in the top 10 in the nation in extra-man of-fense four times in the last six years and in the top 12 in each of those six seasons.

Since 2007, Benson’s first year as Hopkins’ offensive coordinator, Johns Hopkins is 283-of-649 (.436) on ex-tra-man chances.

12+: Prior to the last two games against Maryland and Ohio State, Johns Hopkins had scored 10 or more goals in 10 straight games and 11 times in 12 games.

11-12-13: Johns Hopkins ranks 11th in the nation in assists per game (7.14), 12th in points per game (19.07), and 13th in goals per game (11.93).

4x40: The top of the Johns Hopkins scoring chart features four players who have topped the 40-point mark in Joel Tinney (47 points), Shack Stanwick

(43), Kyle Marr (43) and Cole Williams (40). This marks the first time since 2009 that Johns Hopkins has had four players top the 40-point mark. In 2009, Chris Boland (46), Kyle Whar-ton (45), Michael Kimmel (45) and Brian Christopher (41) all topped the 40-point mark.

4x40 - Part II: Johns Hopkins is one of just two teams in the nation (Canisius) that has four players with 40 or more points entering this week’s games.

Opponent Droughts: The Johns Hopkins defense held UMBC scoreless for a stretch of 38:05 from late in the first quarter through the middle of the fourth. That’s the longest JHU has held an opponent scoreless since the Jays held Mount St. Mary’s off the board for a run of 44:56 on April 14, 2014.

More Droughts: In the last 10 games, the Blue Jay defense has held the opposi-tion scoreless for stretches of 38:05 (UMBC), 22:33 (OSU-2), 16:03 (Delaware), 15:50 (SU), 14:33 (Delaware), 14:22 (Mich), 14:16 (OSU-1), 14:00 (UVA), 13:54 (Mich), 13:01 (SU), 13:00 (UVA), 11:48 (MD), 11:48 (OSU-1), 11:19 (PSU), 11:03 (OSU-2), 11:00 (OSU-2), 10:42 (RU), 9:02 (SU) and 9:01 (MD. That’s a stretch of at least nine minutes 19 times in 10 games.

Second-Half Surge: Johns Hopkins has outscored the opposition 90-47 after halftime during the last 11 games. JHU has scored at least seven goals in the second half in eight of those 11 games and eight or more goals in the second half in seven of the 11 games.

58 in a Row: Senior Shack Stanwick had his school-record 58-game point-scoring streak snapped in the 14-12 loss at Penn State. Stanwick left the game with an injury less than four minutes into the game, made a brief return and then exited and didn’t return to bring his streak to an end.

Stanwick’s 58-game run broke the previous record of 56 games, which was set by Terry Rior-dan from 1992-95.

Hitting the Century Mark: With four assists at Rutgers, senior Shack Stanwick topped the 100-career assist mark and with one against Ohio State in the Big Ten Semifinals has pushed his total to 108. He is just the seventh player in school history to reach 100 career assists and his 108 rank fifth in school history.

Stanwick Among Career Leaders: With 91 goals and 108 assists for 199 points to his credit, senior attackman Shack Stanwick ranks fifth in school history in assists, 11th in school history in points and 27th in goals.

90-100: Shack Stanwick tallied one goal (and one assist) against Maryland to become the third player in school history to record 90 or more goals and 100 or more assists. Only Jack Thomas (103g, 121a from 1972-74) and Richie Hirsch (101g, 103a from 1974-77) had turned that trick in JHU history prior to Stanwick, who now has 91 goals and 108 assists in his career.

Williams Second in Goals, Fourth in Points, Third in Assists: Sophomore attackman Cole Williams ranks second on the team in goals (28), fourth in points (40) and tied for third in as-sists (12). He had totaled at least two goals and three points in nine straight games prior to the game at Michigan, when he had one assist in a 10-9 victory.

DeSimone Fifth in Goals, Sixth in Points: Freshman Connor DeSimone is quietly putting to-gether a strong rookie campaign as a member of the Blue Jays’ first midfield. He scored twice in the second half of the 13-12 win at Rutgers and added one goal and one assist at Penn State and one goal against Maryland to push his season totals to 15 goals and one assist; he is now fifth on the team in goals and tied for fifth in points (16).

All 15 of DeSimone’s goals have come in the last 12 games with hat tricks against Syracuse and Virginia and two-goal efforts against Princeton, UMBC and Rutgers.

Marr Hits 30: Junior attackman Kyle Marr scored three goals in the Big Ten Semifinals against Ohio State to help the Blue Jays top the Buckeyes, 6-5, to advance to the B1G title game. The hat trick was his sixth of the year and 10th of his career.

Marr scored the highlight reel game-winner with 14 seconds left in Johns Hopkins’ 13-12 win at Rutgers, added two goals against Ohio State (1st meeting) and two goals and one assist at Penn State. He then scored four goals, including the game-winner with 31.1 seconds remain-ing, at Michigan before a one-goal, one-assist effort against Maryland and the three-goal effort against Ohio State pushed his season totals to 31 goals and 12 assists for 43 points. He leads the team in goals, ranks second in points and is tied for third in assists.

Marr has 11 multi-point, 10 multi-goal and four multi-assist games on the year and has four games with five or more points to his credit. He will carry career totals of 69 goals and 35 assists for 104 points into the game against Maryland.

He also has eight multi-assist games and six multi-goal games and now leads the team in points (47) and assists (29) and is third in goals (18).
